Iginanap noong ikalima ng Abril sa taong kasalukuyan ang kauna-unahang pagtatapos ng mga mag-aaral mula sa Senior High School (SHS) Department ng Northwestern Visayan Colleges (NVC). Ito ay alinsunod sa isinulong na K-12 Program ng Department of Education (DepEd) kung saan

nagdagdag ng dalawa pang taon sa pag-aaral matapos ang apat na taon ng sekondarya. Ang programang ito ay inilunsad upang mas mapaigting ang kalidad ng edukasyon sa Pilipinas at makasabay sa pamantayan ng edukasyon sa mga bansang miyembro ng Association of Southeast Asian Nation (ASEAN).

Award-winning news anchor Jiggy Manicad of GMA7 conducted a forum about Fake News at the NVC CSQ Gymnasium last November 3, 2017.

“There is a need to reboot the nation in order to distinguish fake from real accounts, identify or lo-

cate trolls, and to have a database of legitimate social media users,” Manicad stresses.

According to him, fake news can cause confusion and may affect the governance and the integrity of organizations; therefore, it is necessary for us to be able to spot one.

He shared some telltale signs that indicate that the news article is fake: first, pushing for an agenda is very clear; second, fake news articles are written or produced in a sloppy manner; third, the source(s) is not from a legitimate media organization; and lastly, grammatical lapses in an article can be an indication, as editors will not allow it to be published or broadcast.

Manicad also discussed the actions that could be taken to

fight fake news. He said that it is important to verify information first. He also advised against sharing posts immediately, and last but not least, delete post if it is possible so that it cannot fool more people.

After the discussion, Manicad answered questions from the audience which was composed not only of NVCians but also members of different government agencies and non-government organizations. He shared his journey into the world of media--from a budding newscaster to an multi-award winning journalist. He also recounted his several close calls with death while on duty, including one instance where he was saved from a grenade by Hon. Nemesio Neron many years ago. /TF

NVC produces most number of 2018 LET passers in Aklan

BY ELSA A. TENOSO The Northwestern Visayan Colleges produced the most numbers of passers at the March 2018 Licensure Examination for Teachers (LET) given by the Professional Regulatory Commission. The Bachelor of Elementary Education (BEEd) Department garnered the score of 56. 25% versus the national passing rate of 23.62%.

Meanwhile, the Bachelor of Secondary Education (BSEd) Department, got 40%, higher than the national passing rate

of 29.91 percent.

Mr. Jonathan Yap, one of the LET passers from the BEEd Department said, “Before the exam, I was pressured. I took the review seriously. I prayed. It was challenging because I have a full time job in a private school.

As a first taker, I am proud and happy not only for myself but also for my parents.”

The recent LET results proved that NVC took the standards of learning a notch higher./TF

NVC is the only PACUCOA accredited school in Aklan, opens new programs

Office of the VPAA and Grad school organize tribute symposium for ASQ

SABINO The Northwestern Visayan Colleges is now a Level 1 PACUCOA Accredited School, the first and only in Aklan, after undergoing the strict accreditation processes of the Philippine Association of Colleges and Universities Commission on Accreditation (PACUCOA) for programs Bachelor of Elementary Education (BEEd), Bachelor of Secondary Education (BSEd), and Criminology.

PACUCOA, as stated in their website,”is a private accrediting agency which gives formal recognition to an educational institution by attesting that its academic program maintains excellent standards in its educational operations, in the context of its aims and objectives. To identify schools whose competence and performance in a particular field warrant public and professional recognition. PACUCOA aims 1.)

To guide students in the choice of quality schools, colleges and universities that will meet their individual needs; 2.) To help institutions of learning achieve maximum educational effectiveness through self-evaluation and self-discipline; and 3.) To enlist the cooperation of institutions of learning and professional associations in the mission of advanc-

ing the interest of education.”

The BSEd and BEEd Departments’ Level 1 Accredited Status was awarded last April 27th, 2017. The said status has certification valid until February 2020 for both programs.

Meanwhile, the Criminology Department received its Level 1 Accredited Status last December 15th, 2017 with certification valid until October 2020.

With its persistent determination towards continuous improvement and commitment to provide quality education to all, it has always been among NVC’s goals to have more programs get accredited. The school is getting ready to have the Basic Education department, both elementary and high school, become accredited programs as well. The said programs have complied and have satisfactorily met the standards and requirements of PACUCOA. This resulted for the Federation of Accrediting Agencies of the Philippines (FAAP) grant Candidate Status to the basic education department. This status was received by the elementary and high school department last April 27, 2017 and both certifications are valid until February 2019.

As the only accredited school in Aklan, NVC stands with its

convictions about self-regulations in order to meet with PACUCOA’s standards not only for the school’s benefit but for the good of a larger number of recipients, most especially the students.. According to PACUCOA, “accreditation is a mechanism to assure quality education, as seen in such outputs as significant improvements in the quality of facilities, services and teachers, higher level of competence of graduates and success in employment. It stimulates the pursuit of excellence; encourages compliance with quality specifications and objective standards; and results in empowerment.

These benefits of accreditation have apparently been felt by the public as indicated in their preference of enrolling into accredited schools.”

Due to this recent progress, NVC has opened several new programs to cater to more students who are in quest for quality, yet affordable education.

The new programs offered by the school are Bachelor in Culture and Arts Education (BCAEd) and Bachelor in Physical Education (BPEd), while Bachelor of Secondary Education added to more majors – Science and Social Science./TF

After several years, the Northwestern Visayan Colleges (NVC) produced a Magna Cum Laude recipient again, during the school’s 70th Commencement Exercises held last April 6, 2018.

The absence of the said High Latin Honors during graduation

rites was ended by Glesi Lyn T. Sinag, an AB Mass Communication student and the Associate Editor of The Forum, after she secured her seat on top with a soaring General Weighted Average (GWA) of 1.28 and named her as class 2018 Valedictorian.

In her valedictory speech, Sinag shared to her fellow graduates the “most significant lessons” she had learned in life and in school. The four lessons are: First - Keep in mind that all that is possible can happen to you, only if you strive to fulfill the highest,

NVC holds events in ASQ’s memory

A year after our beloved president, the late Dr. Allen Salas Quimpo’s passing, his second family, the Northwestern Visayan Colleges held a series of events, in his honor, on December 15 and 16, 2017. These activities aim not only to commemorate the death of ASQ but to celebrate his life and legacies.

The event was jumpstarted by a tree planting activity at the ASQ Bakhawan Eco-Park. Student leaders and ASQ’s family planted 900 propagules that day.

The said event was to honor ASQ as an environmental warrior. The event was followed by a mass dedicated to the late NVC President. The mass was held at the NVC CSQ gymnasium and was attended by all NVCians, including students, faculty members, and employees and staff.

Throughout the day, simultaneous departmental events were organized. The Basic Education Department conducted a Story Telling Contest with its theme, “Allen, the Story Teller, while the Senior High School Department put up an ASQ Exhibit at the RSQ Building. The tertiary level also participated where the BSEd Department organized an Akeanon Poetry Writing Contest with its theme, “Allen Salas Quimpo: Aklanon,” and the HRM Department prepared a gift-giving activity for the partner community in Old Buswang, with the theme, “Allen the Benevolent. The Supreme Student Council along with the NVC Library conducted a Quiz Bee and Poster making Contest.

The first day was culminated by a Tribute Concert that celebrate ASQ’s love for music and appreciation of talents. NVC students pre-

pared numbers that best describe Sir Allen. ASQ’s son, Mico, gave a surprise performance where he rendered two songs. According to him, it was his Papa Allen that taught him how to play the guitar, and everytime he plays the instrument, he feels as if Sir Allen is just close by.

On the second day, a tribute symposium for ASQ was organized by the Office of the Vice President for Academic Affairs, and the Graduate Schools (Masters in Education and Masters in Public Administration Programs). The theme of the symposium was “Keeping the Flame of Leadership Excellence.” It aimed to share ASQ’s legacies in the field of education, politics, and the environment. It was held at the Aklan Training Center, and was participated by MAEd and MPA students.

AB Mass Communication Department’s Kapihan sa Aklan was also held that day, in the same venue. Both occasions were graced by the members of Aklan media and notable speakers namely, Dr. Cherry Dalipe, DepEd Aklan’s Science Coordinator, who talked on behalf of Dr. Ernesto F. Servillon, Jr MNSA, Schools Division Superintendent of Aklan, about ASQ’s contribution in the field of education; Rodne Galicha, Country Manager of the Climate Reality Project – Philippines who discussed ASQ’s legacy as an environmental advocate.

Engr. Roger Esto, Head of Aklan Provincial Planning Office, was also lined up to talk about ASQ’s impact in politics. However, due to bad weather condition, the symposium was cut short./TF

Those were the parting words of the Dean of the College of Education and the Masters in Education (MAEd) Program, and wife of the late Dr. Allen Salas Quimpo during the tribute symposium held last December 16, 2015. The said event with the theme “Keeping the Flame of Leadership Excellence” was held at the Aklan Training Center and was attended by the students of Northwestern Visayan Colleges MAEd and Masters in Public Administration (MPA) Programs.

The symposium was organized in commemoration of the first death anniversary of Dr. Allen Salas Quimpo. It aims to celebrate his life and the legacies he built in the field of education, politics, and environmental advocacies.

NEWS BRIEF The Forum, media partner at the National Youth Congress

NVC The Forum was the only student publication among the official media partners of the 26th National Youth Congress on Drug Abuse Prevention Education, where Aklan was the host province, held last May 21-24, 2018 at the Aklan Training Center.

The event was graced by Sec. Catalino S. Uy of Dangerous Drugs Board (DDB); Hon. Michael Klecheski, Charge d’Affaires of US Embassy; Dir. Brandon Hudspeth of Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs; USec. Earl Saavedra, Executive Director of DDB; Rep. Robert “Ace” Barbers, among others.

NVC library system is set to become more high-tech

NVCians who want to conduct researches in the library will soon have even easier time in searching for the books they need.

That is because Online Public Access Catalog (OPAC) will be implemented in NVC library this coming June.

Mr. Joseph Masula of Computer Science Department, together with NVC Librarians Ms. Fe E. Abelardo and Ms. Janet C. Toriaga attended the Koha Integrated Library System Basic Training and Seminar in order to gain knowledge and updates about the latest technology in library management.

During the 2-day seminar which was held last February 13 and 14, 2018 at the National Library of the Philippines, Manila, it was stressed that it is important for school libraries to establish databases that are more accessible, thus, catering to all the students’ reading needs.

The seminar focused on discussing the benefits of the Koha ILS software. The said software is a free and open source software and is vital for the upcoming implementation of the advance technology in NVC library. This will greatly benefit the library systems by improving on cataloging, circulation

and track items borrowed.

"All types of books must have a barcode to be connected in the computer so that if the students borrowed a book from the library they just swipe their IDs instead of writing their name on the logbook, same thing when they are entering the library,” Miss Toriaga said.

More than 13,000 e-books were given for free at the seminar which is very valuable for the students and other personnel alike.

Koha is a Māori term for a gift or donation. It is an open source Integrated Library System (ILS), and is used worldwide./TF

NVC recognizes two prime leaders

BY ALMOND KEIEL JOHN O. MACAWILI FOR THE first time in its history, the Northwestern Visayan Colleges awarded two distinct leaders during the 70th Commencement Exercises on April 6, 2018 at the NVC CSQ Gymnasium.

Among the recipient of the Leadership Award was Felmerie J. Sabino, a 3rd year student of Bachelor of Secondary Education, Major in English. Sabino is the Governor of her Department and at the same time, the Editor-in-Chief of The Forum Publication, the official Student-Publication of NVC. Arlyn Joy Rapiz, NVC’s Supreme Student Council President and an AB Mass Communication student and member of the graduating class of 2018 also received the same award.

These two competent, persevering, and active women were the epitome of good governance and leadership and that is why, during a deliberation meeting, they were adjudged worthy of the award. This is a proof that NVC is a training ground for leaders and competent individuals. The student on the lead, indeed, is an NVCian!/TF

An exhibit was held by the Senior High School Student Council at the NVC RSQ Building last December 15, 2017 to remember the 1st death anniversary of NVC’s late president, Dr. Allen S. Quimpo.

With the theme: “A world of its own, commemorating the greatness of ASQ”, several artifacts that best describes Sir Allen as “a paragon of civic responsibility, a servant-leader at best” was collected and displayed.

In her speech before the opening of the exhibit, Dr. Marianne L. Quimpo, the Dean of College of Education and wife of the late president, requested all NVCians to make the life of ASQ meaningful on their own lives so that his good legacy will remain in the NVC community forever. Mr. Allan Angelo L. Quimpo, the current president of NVC, and son of the late president, was also present to formally open the exhibit program.

Included in the displayed items are the trophies, pictures, certificates and plaques of recognition that were awarded to Sir Allen, including the diploma for his degree for Doctor of Humaties./TF -Ruthsel Cuadernal

NVC holds mass to commemorate ASQ In commemoration of the late Allen Salas Quimpo and his first death anniversary, a mass was held to swipe back ASQ’s legacy and excellence as an epitome of leadership and humanity. The said mass was held at the NVC CSQ Gymnasium on December 15, 2017, 9 o’clock in the morning. It was attended

by ASQ’s beloved family and friends, and the NVC community.

Father Jose Estolloso, who celebrated the mass, shared in his homily how ASQ served as an example for Aklanons, especially for millenials. He also discussed the cycles of life.

This simple commemoration proved that ASQ’s legacy is undying and will remain within the hearts of Aklanons through the years./TF -Bayn Rose Dexter S. Reyes

Residence Club wins Math Amazing Race 2018

The MathGician Club took part in the 70th Foundation Day Celebration of the NVC by organizing this years’s Math Amazing Race , with the theme “Team Building through Mathematics Race.

From NVC RSQ Grounds to Brgy. Mobo’s plaza, fifteen (15) departments and organizations, each having five (5) members, got soaked in their own sweat as they competed to accomplish assigned tasks and answer the mathematics-related questions in each station. Groups who were not able to answer the question after three attempts were given five minutes to wait in order to proceed to the next station.

The Residence Club was the first team that got the correct answer in a logic question at the tenth and final station and was therefore declared as the first place. The English Club and BEED Department got the second and third place, respectively. All the winners received certificates and cash prices./TF -Elsa A. Tenoso

NVC alumni celebrate Ati-Atihan 2018 The Northwestern Visayan Colleges and NVC Alumni Association (NVCAA) took part in Sadsad 2018. The Sadsad is a street dancing event that marks the prestigious celebration of Kalibo Sto. Nino Ati atihan Festival, observed every 3rd week of January. The said event is a yearly tradition which is participated by the NVC community in honor of Sto. Nino. Participants assembled at NVC RSQ Building, and danced in the major streets of Kalibo.

This event aims to gather the NVC family, and also served as a preparation for the Grand Alumni Homecoming which was held last March 2018./TF

Towards a brighter future Two years ago, the Philippines bravely embarked into an educational system, already observed by most schools in the world. As the basic education curriculum adds two more years to the six and four years of elementary and high school respectively, comes the birth of the Senior High School (SHS) Program. This is to give our youth better opportunities.

Fast forward to 2018, over a million Senior High School pioneer graduates all over the Philippines marched and received their diplomas. These benefits include: 1.) Preparedness for tertiary learning – SHS

Our right to information is mandated by the constitution, written specifically in the Bill of Rights. Article III Section 7

of the 1987 Constitution clearly states that: The right of the people to information on matters of public concern shall be recognized.

Access to official records, and to documents, and papers pertaining to official acts, transactions, or decisions, as well as to government research data used as basis for policy development, shall be afforded the citizen, subject to such limitations as may be

graduates will be more equipped to deal with much higher level of learning as they enter college education; 2.) Readiness to join the workforce - SHS graduates will be equipped with skills (through electives) that will make them good at certain field(s); and 3.) Skill competency in the global job market – SHS graduates will become globally competitive and are set to obtain spot in the stiff labor market by helping them improve their mathematical, scientific, and linguistic competence. According to the same article, these “will put Filipino students at par with the rest of the world.”

The Northwestern Visayan Colleges was among the many institutions that heed the call and took on the challenge of providing quality education for senior high schoolers. As the school embraces this positive change in

the curriculum, it still kept true to its mission and vision, which is also one with the very purpose of the K-12 program - to raise graduates who are globally competitive.

As the 294 senior high school graduates of NVC leave the institution, we are in good faith they are all ready. With all the learnings they have received, both in academics and technical skills, our pioneer graduates are well equipped with the needed competencies to assure them of a brighter, better future. Research is one of any educational institution’s key contributions to posterity. It is not surprising therefore, that one of this institution’s missions is to serve as the center of academic excellence, research, instruction, extension and development. True enough, its students and members of the faculty unfailingly produce hundreds of quality research year after year.

These studies do not only answer the prevailing problems in the society or community; it also contributes to the pool of knowledge in different fields of study and aids

in rediscovering our cultural roots.

However, according to a 2007 study from Indiana University, “as many as 50% of papers are never read by anyone other than their authors, referees and journal editors.” Many hardbound books repose in the library shelves, and the most rigorous activity they got is to get dusted every once in a while. How is it then that research, which is in nature done for the betterment of the general public stays in obscurity?

It will not be too farfetched to say that some of the studies are

what we can call “ivory tower” researches. These are published studies that contain scholarly and complicated discussions using technical terminologies and jargons.

Reading this kind of publication makes people feel that they might as well be reading articles written in foreign language. A lot of time and effort goes to waste, and reading academic papers has sometimes become a chore, even for those who have spent many years doing it already. As a result, the publications are read by only a select few.

widespread occurrence that most researchers think thesis writing is just a means to an end (i.e. graduation). In fact, journalist Aaron Gordon asserted in Pacific Standard that “Academia’s incentive structure is such that it’s better to publish something than nothing.”

Therefore, the researchers feel that their responsibility had already ended the moment their academic papers got published and there is no grief even if the research is something that is only read by the authors and the review committee.

Kahit sino ay malayang mag-share ng mga impormasyon lalo na at ito ay libre. Ang malaking tanong ay: lahat nga ba ng iyong nakikita at nababasa ay totoo?

Ang “Fake News” ay isang uri

ng propaganda o hoaxes o mga maling impormasyon na kumakalat sa social media. Dahil sa pekeng balita marami ang naloloko at nalilito. Ilan sa mga dahilan kung bakit laganap ito ay: una, upang siraan ang isang tao, o isang ahensiya o kumpanya at ikalawa: ay ang kanilang mga personal na interes pang-pinansiyal at pulitikal.

Ito ay karaniwang gumagamit ng mga sensational o mga gawa-gawang headlines upang maging mas kapani-paniwala at pumatok sa mga netizens na adik sa social media, lalo na ang mga paniwalain. Click dito, like doon,

at magshare buong maghapon.

Kung patuloy kang ganito, marami ang maloloko at mapapasigaw ng “Hay naku!”

Sa mga nakaraang buwan, naging mainit na usapin sa ating bansa ang pagkalat ng Fake News.

Sinubaybayan ng maraming netizens at umani ng maraming reaksyon. May naglike, may pinusuan, may namangha, nagalit , nag comment, ang iba nama’y lampake at ang iba naman ay “hayaan mo sila” ang naging reaksyon.

Sa kadahilanang ito, isinusulong sa senado ang Senate Bill 1492, or the proposed Anti-Fake

If you want to request through a different platform which is online known as eFOI, the process is pretty much the same.

However you want it done, the bottom line is this: our right to information is upheld through FOI. May we not abuse this privilege; instead, let us take advantage of it for a better, more accountable and transparent government. /TF moot if it will not be brought out of the academia. What can we do, then, to help rectify the situation?

There are two major steps that could be taken into consideration.

First step: Reader-friendly research papers.

Explaining research works using very simple language and by correlating research to the real world is the best option in order for the research findings to be understandable to a non-research audience. Many institutions are practicing this strategy.

Case in point, the Cochrane Library encourages the use of ‘lay-person’s language’ to describe the main intentions, process and outcome of research in the summary of their systematic reviews. Another example is the Finnish Cancer Registry in Helsinki, Finland which has a principle of making easy-to-understand versions of their studies so that it might become interesting to “common people”. The University of Washington Center for Technology and Disability Studies (UWCTDS) even went(Continued on page 7) News bill. Education interns strut the runway

A culminating activity in a form of a fashion show directed by HRM Instructor Marlon Cipriano was held last November 14, 2017, at the NVC CSQ Gymnasium.

According to the book Personality Development through Positive Thinking by Amit Abraham, “Desire is the key to motivation. It is the key to develop a healthy personality and a positive attitude towards oneself and others.” More than just improving the physical looks, personality development also deals with one’s attitude, and self-esteem.

A pleasing personality and an excellent character are two powerful tools every student should have in their arsenal, which will ensure leverage once they are deployed to “the real world” of

employment, as we call it. That is why, the College of Education, under the leadership of their beloved dean, Dr. Marianne Quimpo initiated a personality development program for our graduating BEEd and BSEd students.

As the famous quote of best-seller author Tom Hopkins goes, “You are your greatest asset. Put your time, effort, and money into training, grooming, & encouraging your greatest assest. We all have heard the cliché “First impression is lasting,” and according to Dr. Quimpo, “We want to make that impression last a positive impression on us.”

After weeks of learning and training, the future educators walked the runway to show how they “package” themselves./TF

Kinumpirma ni Commissioner Cristita C. Triunfante ng Philippine Commission on Women (PCW) na isinusulong ngayon ng kanilang ahensiya na maisama sa kurikulum ng kolehiyo ang Gender and Development.

Ito ay kanyang ipinahayag sa isinagawang pagtitipon para sa Gender Sensitive Media Orientation na ginanap noong Nobyembre 24, 2017 sa Aklan Provincial Capitol Building.

Nagsama-sama ang mga media practitioners sa Aklan at mga campus journalists at ilan sa mga estudyante ng AB MassComm mula sa Northwestern Visayan Colleges.

BY ELSA A. TENOSO “Only a life lived for others is a life worthwhile.”- Albert Einstein Different clubs and organizations of NVC got involved in community service in promoting active partnership to local programs and contribute to social development of partner communities.

The BSEd Department, spearheaded by their Department Governor, Felmerie J. Sabino, brought the library to the pre-school pupils of Pook Tugbungan Child Development Center barangay Pook, Kalibo, Aklan last February 27.

They conducted a story telling to teach younger generation develop the love for reading and learn about values from the books they read.

This project was the organization’s innovative program to bring back and instill love for reading.

The Hotel and Restaurant Management (HRM) Department

led by Mary Jane Teodosio, Department Governor, celebrated the true essence of Christmas with the day care pupils of New Buswang Day Care Center 1 & 2 at New Buswang, Kalibo, Aklan. The Gift Giving activity, conducted on December 15, 2017, was the Hotelier’s way of recognizing the importance of giving and receiving.

Another Ssudent-led activity was the Youth Peer Education on Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) last March 3, 2017. The aim of this program was to raise awareness among the youth of New Buswang, Kalibo age 14 and above about HIV and AIDS, the causative organism and modes of how it is transmitted. NVC Red Cross Club officers, headed

by John Harold C. Ostan, who

organized the activity, educated them on how to protect themselves from acquiring the disease and how to control the transmission from one person to another.

Aside from that, the Bachelor of Science in Criminology Department led by Department Governor Jose Emmanuel Senining, also conducted a Seminar on Fire Prevention to raise awareness of fire hazards among the people of Barangay Pook, Kalibo, Aklan. The fire officers of Kalibo Fire Station, headed by FO3 Mark V. Verdeflor, demonstrated the fire safety procedures on how to act safely during an emergency fire situation. Another activity of the same department was the Green Gram (Monggo) Seeds Breeding. The farmers of the said barangay were able to cultivate their vacant land areas for mongo production./TF

“Aklanon literature is alive and kicking”, reiterated Hon. Phillip Yerro Kimpo in his speech during the opening day of National Arts Month it Aklan (NAM it Aklan) celebration held on February 23-24, 2018 at the NVC Gym. Father of Binaeaybay Melchor F. Cichon, and Aklan’s premier writers Arwena Tamayo and Awrea Paz served as panelists in the open forum about Aklanon Writing.

Other writers who were featured in the event were Isidoro Cruz who discussed the 21st Century West Visayan Fiction, Noel De Leon for Zines and Flash Fictions, John Iremil Teodosio who talked about Poetry for Young People, and Alice Tan-Gonzales who discussed Re-

writing the Folktales.

Books of Aklanon and Hiligaynon literature were also launched during the event such as Si Montor by John E. Barrios and Raya Rang Pasalig, Parayaw by Melchor F. Cichon.

Workshops on Creative Writing Strategies and Poetry Writing were also conducted by John Iremil Teodosio and Melchor Cichon respectively.

On the night of the second day, winning videos in the CineKasimanwa Film Festival was shown.

Ito ang nais iparating ng kaniyang talumpati sa ginanap na 26th National Youth Congress on Drugs Abuse Prevention Education (NYCDAPE) na idinaos sa Kalibo, Aklan noong ika 21-24 ng Mayo 2018.

Ayon sa kaniya, malaki ang papel ng sektor ng mga kabataan sa pagsugpo ng ilegal na droga, dahil ang nasabing sektor ang pinakamadaling matukso sa paggamit at pagbebenta nito. Ngunit, sinabi rin niyang hindi hahayaan ng kaniyang ahensiya na maging biktima ang mga kabataan ng mga ilegal na sangkap na ito.

Carandang, the Chief of Communication Resources and Production Division of DOST-STII, was in Aklan last year to train Aklan media on how to simplify knowledge so that upon dissemination, it can easily be understood by a wider audience.

Second step: Dissemination to a wider general public.

After making research findings reader-friendly, a couple of good ways of disseminating research findings to greater amount of people is through online reports and faceto-face communication of findings.

The aforementioned Finnish Cancer Registry also publish books that describe key results of all their research activities in a condensed format.

NVC can adopt the abovementioned practices. It would be a good idea to compile all the summary of the research findings in a booklet

and include it in the school’s yearly chronicles. Also, PDF versions of the theses could be published and included in our library’s collection of E-books. This way, files could be downloaded and read in smartphones or laptops, thus eliminating the common excuse of people not to check out library books: ”too bulky and too heavy”. Another plus: the files could be duplicated, which means maximum benefit for maximum amount of people.

It is commendable that several of our faculty members are showcasing their researches at different symposia outside school. Their studies were paid great accolades. But it would be even more awesome if the students can also share their research in a school-organized research fair which may be conducted at the end of the school year. Some key people in the community or policy level, or even the non-government organizations that work at the grassroots levels may be invited (assuming, of course that the researches presented are relevant to their field of interest).

This would create more awareness and impact not only to NVCians but to the wider society, culture and economy outside of the school./TF

How to be lazy

but still get good grades - the scientific way

e live in the norm that it is okay, or even encouraged, to be “busy studying”. It appears that spending hours and hours keeping our face buried in multiple books is considered to be the mark of a good student.

However, not everyone is gifted with excellent memory or herculean discipline to study continuously for a long time and that could pose huge problems for us students who are graded for our test scores.

No need to panic! There is still hope and the secrets will be shared to you; but first, let us move back a little and discuss a common assumption.

Being busy is a sign of a productive student to many people.

But what do “busy” really mean?

Thomas Edison, the inventor of incandescent bulb among many other things, said: “Being busy does not mean real work. The object of all work is production or accomplishment…seeming to do is not doing” That is something that we must really consider. How much of our time is spent on “seeming to study” and how much of it is actually spent on real studying, thus having real learning? Also, if the desired outcome of work (studying) is accomplishment (learning) and

the steps undertaken to achieve it is inessential, is it possible that we can study less but learn more? The answer is YES! So how can we be “lazy” but still get good grades? The idea may seem to be contradictory but the truth is; it is not. Being lazy is something you can do strategically, and you can do that by taking regular breaks during study sessions.

Taking periodic breaks is very important in keeping our brain healthy and able to produce great work. They are scientifically-proven to boost focus and productivity.

A 2008 University of Illinois study shows that the brain’s ability to focus decreases after a long period of doing a single task, thus, hindering performance. But even brief diversions, the study found, could significantly increase one’s ability to focus on that task for prolonged periods of time. This means that being a bit lazy at regular intervals during the study sessions can make you work intensely and effectively.

In short, our study schedules have to be programmed in a way that there will be breaks which will help us get the most benefit out of studying. And the following four (4) tips will tell you how to do it: Tip 1: Pre-plan your long breaks.

These are breaks that last for

longer periods of time–usually 30 minutes to 1 hour--wherein you can completely disconnect yourself from working or studying and do whatever we want.

Before you start your study session, determine when those long breaks will happen. This has a lot of benefits. First is, when you are resting, there will be no ambiguity. Maybe you experience this sometimes: when you are watching Koreanovelas or doing something that you know is not work, and at the back of your mind, there is a nagging guilty feeling that keeps you thinking: “I should be working right now”. The guilt will be erased when you pre-plan your breaks, and you know what you should be doing at all times, Also, you will be more motivated and work more intensely during study hours because the existence of a pre-planned break in the near future will create a little bit of time pressure that helps you to work faster and more intensely.

You will work harder to finish your work before the time is up. If you have a little more freedom in your

FEATURE schedule, taking a longer nap — one that lasts 60 to 90 minutes — has even more benefits for your mind and cognition.

An hour to hour and a half nap improves memory test results as much as an eighthour night of sleep, according to UC Riverside research.

Tip 2: Take tiny breaks Consider your tiny breaks to be “breathers” -- 5-10 minute breaks --- that should be spent by physically getting up and moving away from your work space. This way, you will get your blood flowing and you will be mentally refreshed.

Tip 3: Do not go online You should not go on social media, check emails, or visit distracting sites during tiny breaks.

This is to avoid the occurrence of what a 2009 study in University of Minnesota coined as Attentional Residue. This concept describes what happens when we switch from one big task to another and then try to switch back to that main task.

Basically, by switching to another task – like chatting with friends via Messenger--- you will pick up new ideas or problems that weigh on your attention and take up working memory. When you try to switch back to the main task, the really important one, those new ideas or problems do not really go away. They clutter up your working memory and that could lower productivity and impede the ability to stay focused. Secondly, we

all know from personal experience that social media can turn 5-minute break to hours. It’s better not to open that can of worms.

Tip 4: Go for walks outside When we are mentally drained and feeling unmotivated, walking outside will boost our mood. In addition to providing mild physical exercise, walking has been shown to relieve stress, reduce fatigue and boost mood. This is because our bodies and brains are programmed to move a lot. Walking through green spaces could even put the brain in a state of meditation, according to a study published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine.

Charles Darwin, among many other scientists, used a huge chunk of his work time walking around his property to mull over large problems he could not solve when he is at his desk. To sum up, you should walk for a minimum of 10 minutes for at least one of your daily study breaks, preferably outside. Your body will appreciate the dose of Vitamin D. ~~~ We are products of evolution that is always dependent on cycles of work and rest. Unlike computers which are designed to run in a steady supply of power, our brains cannot work incessantly and tirelessly for long periods of time without breaks. The tips given above equip us with reasons to stop studying and rest for a while. So, the next time someone chastise you for lying down or walking around instead of studying, you can just tell them that you are being “strategically lazy.”/TF

Technology is changing how students learn

FLORES Education is one of the significant factors needed by the students to succeed in whatever path they might take and, as the years go by, technology is identified to be more likely to have the biggest influence in every student’s education. There is no doubt that learning advances depend not only on new ideas, conceptual leaps and paradigm shifts, but also to a large extent on technological advances especially in an educational field.

Add that to the reality that students nowadays---the Generation Z--- have, according to what Lauren Triance-Haldane wrote in a journal titled Innovative Educators, an average attention span of about eight seconds, and you won’t have a problem envisioning a group of students that gets easily distracted. In fact, in a recent survey of more than 21,000 post-secondary educators, the biggest teaching challenge identified was students not paying attention or participating in class. Teachers and other faculty members find it hard to know exactly what will catch on and what won't do. But it’s always been important for educators to figure out how their students learn, and adjust their methods accordingly.

That is why teachers are seeking hi-tech solutions in order to capture student's attention when it comes to class discussions.

Professors and some teachers

in Northwestern Visayan Colleges (NVC) have shifted their teaching styles from written to video screen or lecture projection because they believe that involvement of technology will boost and hook student's attention in a class discussion.

That conjecture is backed by research. In a 2013 study conducted by G Bester and L Brand titled: The effect of technology on learner attention and achievement in the classroom, it was found out that “the average attention of learners exposed to technology during a lesson was significantly higher compared to a group not exposed to technology”. The study shows that technology succeeds in capturing and maintaining the attention of learners during a lesson. Also, employing technology in the classroom creates a more interactive learning environment which enables learner to use multi-modalities resulting in better attention and concentration for a longer period of time.

As a result, academic excellence will build up. It is not surprising because children today are visual learners having grown up with technology.

All courses in NVC, even the K-12 levels and other specializations, are using technology-based education. It may not be that wide but they have their

subject wherein technology is involved. Even in reporting, Power Point presentation is being used.

Some teachers uses the so called "Flipped Classroom" kind of teaching model wherein teachers are using technology to change the way instructors teach. Rather than spending the class time presenting the lecture to the students, the lessons are delivered to the students in a video format for them to watch in a classroom or study hall. For them, bringing technology into the classroom uses resources ranging from computers to classrooms and school

wide coordination is essential for ensuring an effective learning environment for students.

In closing, it must always be remembered that technology can capture the attention of learners but there should also be a willingness from their side to concentrate in order for a learning task to be successfully completed. The teachers have embraced technology in the class-

room, meaning that they understand their audience. They are willing to lead innovation in teaching and are committed to improve how to do their job.

In turn it is the learners’ job to exercise discipline in using technology in the classroom and commit to absorb the lessons taught. After all, what's important for the students to learn from what the teachers are imparting---whether technology is involved or not./TF

Outstanding alumni in different fields were recognized during the Grand Alumni Homecoming of the Northwestern Visayan Colleges, with its theme “Honoring the Past.

Molding the Present, Creating the Future” last January 16, 2018.

In its 70 years of providing quality education, NVC has produced alumni who excel in different walks of life. The alumni achievers for 2018 were; Ronalyn N. Iguiz, a Certified Health and Wellness Coach and owner of online fashion business for high quality clothing who assist participants or

clients in finding new ways to inspire heathier habits, and help individuals realize their personal best; Stela T. Dy who established the first and only Doll Museum in the country, Dolljoy Gallery and Museum. She also supplies free pan de sal to the Daughters of Charity in New Washington, Aklan; Epifanio Winston M. Ilicito, a government public service leader who is currently the Legislative Officer II Office of Committee on Rules, I Mina’ TrentaCuatro Na LiheslatureGuahan 34th Guam Legialature. He was

also an accounting clerk, Archivist, Community Outreach Manager/Legislative Analyst, Legislative Aide, Policy Adviser and Adjunct Teacher.

Dr. Christy Laurente, Education Supervising Educational Program Specialist Commission on Higher Education, Region VI, Western Visayas. National awardee as Dance Researcher of two Visayan Dances, consultant of the Western Visayas Board.

Growing up in the humble town of Ibajay, my bestfriend used to take me to a place he proudly calls the Melchor Shrine. Everytime we had a chance to go to Poblacion, we would visit that place until it became a habit, and an indelible part of my growing up years. Back then, I thought that the Melchor Shrine was just the ancestral home of the founder of a private school in Ibajay – Alejandro Melchor. The school was named after him, and that was all I knew. Now that I have grown into an inquisitive fellow, I realized, I did not know any better, so I started looking for answers. I did some research, and conducted interviews.

I had the opportunity to talk with Melchor Memorial School’s principal, Mr. Julio Estolloso. I was also able to interview the wife of Alejandro Melchor’s first cousin.

Let me start with what I have researched. Back in the days when Aklan was not yet a province, and Ibajay was still a town in Capiz, little did the folks of the said town knew that they will be blessed with a great treasure.

COL. ALEJANDRO On August 9, 1900, the said gift was born to the couple Juan Melchor MELCHOR, SR. and Caridad Salguero. They named the boy, Alejandro. After finishing his elementary years in Ibajay Central School and secondary in Capiz Provincial High School, Doding, as he is fondly called, left for Manila to study in the University of the Philippines. He took up Civil Engineering and graduated with highest honors. He served his Alma Matter as a Math instructor, a professor of the Civil Engineering Department, and as College Secretary of the College of Engineering.

Aside from his academic contribution, a sundial in the UP Diliman campus was associated with Doding as well. This sundial happens to be a personal favorite of mine. I have been admiring its commanding presence without me realizing, that it was designed and constructed by no less than, my fellow Ibajaynon, Alejandro Melchor himself. Because of his brilliance and great contributions to the university and to the College of Engineering, the building that now houses them was named after him. Another building in the Philippine Military Academy where he taught and served as Head of the Department of Engineering was also named after him.

Aside from being a member of President Sergio Osmeña’s cabinet, Doding also served the country during the World War II through his invention, the pontoon bridge. His invention was instrumental to the victory of the Allied forces.

To celebrate the man, the late President Ferdinand E. Marcos declared August 9, Melchor Day as a holiday. It was celebrated only once, since declaration. In Ibajay, a school named after him was founded, the Melchor Memorial School. However, the memory of his well-lived AUXILLADORA MELCHOR, life faded too soon. According to MMS principal, Mr. Julio Estolloso, DODING’S OLDEST LIVING he proposed to Ibajay’s Sangguninang Bayan to revive Melchor Day, RELATIVE IN IBAJAY but to no avail. With reasons undisclosed, he simply said that the SB of Ibajay thought that a school named after the great Ibajaynon is enough to preserve his memory. The maintenance of the Melchor Shrine also fell under the school’s responsibility.

The younger generation no longer knows about Alejandro Melchor. According to Auxilladora Melchor, the wife of Doding’s cousin, his children are in Manila, and one is in Roxas City, Capiz. If we try hard enough, perhaps we can work with them to educate young people how great Alejandro Melchor was. If need be, let us dig deeper and unearth the hidden treasure of Ibajay, buried due to apathy and ignorance to his greatness After all, this treasure is not-so hidden./TF

Director of a travel show KOOLTRIP at ABS-CBN Sports and Action that won Best Wholesome Travel Show in 2016 in the third Ending Indie Film Festival.

His full length film HIWAGA had been selected as Top 10 of the MMFF (Metro Manila Film Festival) 2016, and was selected as Top 10 in the Manhattan Film Festival, New York.

Rene Renton, a Senior Overseas Banker with more than 30 years of work experience in Corporate Banking and Risk Management Groups with leading financial institutions both in Saudi Arabia and the Philippines; Julito M. Tejada, an engineer who has trained more than 200 engineers in the United States, EU, United Kingdom, Mexico and Asia Pacific countries including China and India. He received a Plaque of Appreciation from the United Aklanon Association of Toronto for pioneering the scholarship program for the 17 underprivileged but deserving students, one from each town in Aklan.

Rey Rentillo and Grace C. Aujero, both Overseas Filipino Workers. Aujero is a fulltime housewife who raised four children who are all successful

in their chosen career; migrated to US and started working in Mc Donald’s Corporation as a Supervisor.

Two more NVC alumni were recognized by the institution during the graduation ceremony last April 6, 2018. After a thorough selection process, the outstanding alumni for 2018 were Marian Pador Pavy, the Vice President of Global Services Incorporated, and PSupt. Ruel Mendoza Vacaro, Chief Logistics Management Division of the Philippine National Police Crime Laboratory in Camp Crame.

These two exempleray products of NVC were given the opportunity to inspire the graduating class of 2018, through their words of wisdom. Ms Pavy and PSupt. Vacaro shared their experiences, insights, and advice to everyone present in the graduation rites. Both of them also challenged the fresh graduates to aim high and never settle for less. And most of all, to always remember their Alma Matter./TF

The Benevolence of NVC

The Northwestern Visayan Colleges is a school that provides access to quality education. Aside from competent and qualified teachers, NVC also grants scholarships for deserving students and the less fortunate in life that can’t afford to support their education. The NVC also secures the needs and protects the students in any incident that could happen. The school makes sure that all students that are enrolled at NVC will be protected through their personal accident insurance.

In this regard, Maryniel Ili Zausa, one of the students of NVC who was enrolled in the Bachelor of Elementary Education (BEEd) Deparment met an accident last September 5, 2017 that caused her demise. As stated above, NVC does not just secure the education of students but also helps them in times of need. Last January 24, 2018, on behalf of the NVC Community, the school treasurer and current member of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan of Aklan, Hon. Lillian Quimpo Tirol endorsed a check to the parents of the said student with a total amount of eleven thousand pesos (Php 11,000.00).

Ten thousand pesos (Php 10,000.00) was given for death and dismemberment and one thousand pesos (Php 1,000.00) was for the burial assisstance by Malayan Insurance given at Libacao, Aklan. The NVC Community also extended their deepest sympathy and condolences to the Zausa family./TF

Mabuti na lamang ay nalinang ng mabuti ang kasanayan ng mga NVCian. Handa silang makipagsabayan sa kabila ng mas mahigpit na labanan sa mundo ng paghahanap ng trabaho.

Para sa mga nagsipagtapos, ay maaari silang makilahok sa mga Trabaho Fair na inaalok ng mga lokal na pamahalaan. Maaari rin silang maghanap ng mga alternatibong trabaho sa kapital ng Aklan kung saan matatagpuan ang sentro ng mga kabuhayan. At maaari rin silang maghanap ng trabaho online sa mga mapagkakatiwalaang online job hunting sites.

Nakita na natin ang malaking epekto ng pagpapasara sa Boracay na pangunahing industriyang ikinabubuhay ng mga Aklanon. Kung kaya’t ang bawat isa ay dapat magtulungan at magbayanihan sapagkat hindi pa huli ang lahat para isalba nag napabayaang paraiso./TF

It was at exactly 11:34 in the morning, on the cold breeze of January when we arrive at the Capitol building. I got so excited because my Mother will get her late Christmas bonus from the Provincial office. I was rejoicing but my stomach was keenly feeling the hunger.

"Like gosh! Ma dasiga eon" I shouted at my Mom, and everyone else inside the room laughed at me.

Suddenly a man, a guard rather, came and approached me.

"Libot ka lang anay idto ne ho, may exhibit abi iya sa February" I stared blankly at the man, gave him a smirk, rolled my eyes but still, I found myself going on the spot where he pointed me out.

Paintings here, paintings there. Photos of abstract things, a replica of an old guitar, old cultural material games of Filipinos, faces of legendary people but were strangers to my eyes.

"So boring, psh. I should've just stayed at home," I murmured while checking all the paintings flashed at one edge of the room.

I am about to turn my head and go back to my Mother when I saw his picture. It was him, I knew it was really him. The shirt he wore at the painting, those pair of slippers, and even the smile that captivated every creature he's been with. The late President of NVC! Sir Allen Salas Quimpo.

I was struck there, staring at the picture, barely seeing everything around, but only him. I could feel butterflies in my stomach neither because of hunger nor love affection, but of strange feeling a person might feel when you see someone you idolize.

"That aura---" I said softly. It's something so genuine, you are a real batman. Hindi ka lang pang-NVC, pangmasa ka rin sa pagsilbi sa mga nakapalibot sa'yo.

The man with a long sleeves shirt, a simple short, a pair of eyeglasses and blue-colored slippers holding a plant and leaning a bit towards the ground has no idea of what words I have been uttering when I saw his picture. I took photos of his painting. One, two three click. One, two, three cli--"Ruthsel Ga, let's go and eat!" Oh that was my Mother! And then I waved at him and gave him a flying kiss, then rushed out to reach my Mom. "See you Batman!"./TF

The Exchange Between the Pomelo Trees and the Bees

Once upon a time, in a tranquil spot in a riverbank, there grew three pomelo trees. They deemed themselves the most productive pomelo trees that ever grew, even if all they had produced are small, wrinkly, and worm-infested fruits.

One might think that with their produce, all animals in the riverbank visit them all the time to pay homage to them. On the contrary, however, the animals stay away from them because of the sharp thorns that riddled their branches. But the sharpness of their thorns is nothing compared to the sharpness of their tongues. They are boastful and self-centered. It's as if they do not care if they offend all the animals around them.

The only ones who could stand being near them are the bees because the poor insects are so intent in gathering nectar to pay attention to their actions. Besides, they can't hear the vile words because of their continuous buzzing.

One day, the three pomelo trees decided to stop giving nectar to the bees.

"We have the right to refuse you if we want," they said. "We are the queens of this riverbank.

The bees replied: " Oh pomelos! Please don't think that you can live by yourselves. You need us, just as much as we need you".

The bees decided not to stoop down to the pomelos' level and instead of wasting their time arguing with the narrow-minded and shallow creatures, they travelled to other places to look for food.

Because of the bees' absence, the pomelo flowers were not pollinated. No fruits were ever produced again. The trees started to age, and the hope of reproduction went away with the bees.

A few years after, the riverbank was there, but the pomelos are not./TF

Malapit na yung pinakahihintay kong araw at iyon ang aking pagtatapos sa elementarya. Sinabi ko sa aking Nanang Consolacion na mag-aaral ako ng hayskul sa Maynila, ngunit sinabi niya sa akin na huwag na lamang sapagkat hindi na niya kayang tustusan ang aking pag-aaral saka hindi naman daw importante ang pag-aaral.

“Matapos mo lang ang elementarya ay masaya na ako anak. Makapagbilang at makapagbasa ka lang puwede na,” sabi sa akin ni Nanang.

Lumaki ako sa hirap at ang tanging kasama ko ay ang aking Nanang. Pagbubukid ang aming ikinabubuhay. Si ama ay namatay sa sakit sa bato mula nong isinilang ako at hindi ko na siya naabutan. Ito na ang araw na aking pinakaaantay, ang aking pagtatapos.

Ang Pagiging Batang Ina ay…

Marami ang nagtatanong, ano ba ang pakiramdam ng pagiging batang ina? Sasabihin kong hindi madali, pero napakasarap sa pakiramdam.

Ang pagiging batang ina ko ay isang napakalaking pagsubok sa aking buhay.

Nag-aaral ako sa umaga, nagbabantay ng sanggol sa gabi, pero di ito naging hadlang para di ako makapagtapos sa aking pag-aaral. Marami akong naranasang hirap simula sa pagdadala ng aking anak hanggang sa maipanganak ko siya.

Di maiiwasan ang mga taong mapagmasid sa mundong mapanghusga, ngunit di ako nagpaapekto sa mga taong ganyan. Nakapagtapos ako ng aking kurso at nagkaroon ng Latin Honor, sabi nga ng iba may medalya na, may tropeyo pa.

The Forum Publication does not only excel in writing but in other also in other practices in mass media. They bagged the second place in the recently held Aklan GADC Video-making Contest. Also, all of the Forum staffers who took the 2017 Kapisanan ng mga Brodkaster ng Pilipinas Accredition Exam passed.

They also met and were trained by people who are successful in their respective fields.

Nino Rogien Teodosio was hailed the Most Promising Feature writer-Filipino while Mary Ann Solis bagged Promising Newswriter-Filipino at the PIA Campus Journalism Workshop held at Iloilo City.

The Forum staffers are always active during meetings and mini workshops, leadership trainings, scriptwriting workshops, as well as workshops on science writing and reporting.

They also attended forums and focus group discussions.

This academic year 2017- 2018, the publication accomplished the first in-house layouting which was done by our very own graphic artists and creative designers. It also produced the first ISSUU account wherein everyone can read or download the digital copies of the issues for free. In addition, the editorial board was successful in purchasing a desktop computer which will be a big help in the future newspaper productions.

For the Editorial Board 2017-2018, it has been a hectic cycle of unending ups and downs. After all, they are a group of unique individuals bound initially by their love of words, truth, and fairness.

Good thing the entire ride was made smoother because of the trust and support that they had developed for each other./TF
