staffer The National Honors Society is one of the most prestigious groups of seniors in the country. Every year, juniors across the United States apply within their school with hopes of being inducted into the organization. NHS was established to recognize high school students who have demonstrated excellence in scholarship, leadership, service, and character. The students apply by writing about their involvement in and out off school with volunteering and extracurriculars. They also have to write an essay on what makes them a true leader. Then, the teacher committee reviews these applications and decides who would make a good part of the society. To be elected into NHS, the student must maintain a GPA of 3.6 or higher. Students must have good character and show leadership in and out of the classroom. The induction will be taking place on April 27. Previous seniors in NHS will graduate from the society that day and all of the newly elected members will be inducted, receiving a pin. The graduating seniors will receive their honor cords which they wear at the graduation ceremony in June. As for the induction, each officer, as well as librarian Darla Omey and principal Steven Swaggerty will speak and each junior will walk on stage and receive their pin and certificate. The students will then take the pledge into NHS and officially be inducted and a member of the society. Seniors will also walk across on stage and receive their honors cord and officially graduate. The NHS President, Vice President, Secretary, and Treasure will each be giving a speech about leadership, service, character, and scholarship. “We will talk about how incoming members are expected to reflect these pillars and represent the school, as well as applaud graduating seniors for their work in the classroom and community and ask that they maintain the four pillars throughout their lifetimes,” senior NHS president Starr Jiang said.

The STEM research students had the chance to experience what it would be like at a real science conference when they had the chance to take a trip to the Junior Science Humanities Symposium conference. This three day event was held at Bowling Green State University from March 16-18. On March 16, the students kicked off their trip by checking into their hotel and going ice skating with the STEM participants from other schools all around Ohio. The next day they went to Olscamp Hall to listen to the paper presenters. The paper presentation was an honor and an extremely selective event. Sophomore Erika Chen was one of the 24 out of 36 chosen to present her paper at this event. “JSHS was a good learning experience. I was surprised by how many different research projects there were. It was very inspiring to see so many students so advanced and engaged in science,” Chen said.

After the paper presentations and lunch, they toured the Laboratories at BGSU. The STEM students got a close up look at what types of research facilities BGSU had to offer. The students then went to a banquet where, keynote speaker Dr. Gabriel Matney spoke on how to stop making assumptions and starting thinking more scientifically by making conjectures. On the last day of their trip, the STEM students went to another session of paper presentations. After a lunch break at the Oaks, the awards ceremony was held. Kameron Clinton won an honorable mention third place medal for her poster. Only three awards for the 11 and 12 grades were given so this was a huge honor. “It gave me great experience in presenting research which I can use in college,” Clinton said. “I’m very proud of the STEM students and I think it was a great experience for them. They did really well in competition and had a great time too,” Advisor Ms. Nelson said.

Tree City Film Festival hosts annual challenge staffer

Film fanatics from all over Sylvania will be attending the Tree City Film Festival at the end of the month from

April 22 to April 24 at the Sylvania Historical Train Barn. The festival hosts several different film related events which include Oscar Nominated Shorts, the Fifty Hour Film challenge, and the Shorties A and U competitions. The Oscar Nominated Shorts category, which is at 7 p.m. on Friday April 22, is an event where the short films nominated at the Oscars that year are shown in order to give the attendees the chance to view them for fun if they like. “As an amateur short film maker I’m a huge fan of this category,” senior Luke Beattie said. “It’s a great opportunity for me to look at some of the things that other people like me are doing for short films.” The Fifty Hour Film Challenge is an event that groups from the area can participate in. The groups have to write, produce, film, and edit a short film. Groups in the challenge are given a line and a prop

that they have to incorporate in their films with 50 hours to complete the task.

“I had a group of students compete in this challenge and I thought it was a very formative experience for them. It gave them the chance to experiment and be creative as well as getting them involved in the community,” Interactive Media teacher Tammy Blue said. The final event that the Film Festival Offers is the Shorties A and U competitions. These are short film competitions and include students from second to twelfth grade. The students can form production teams or go solo to compete in this event. All they have to do is create a short film. These films are then judged and an award is given to the best one.

This year students have received a new program to add to their AP study sessions before the exams in May. The program is a website called Learnerator. The school purchased a student pass for all students in AP classes this year in order to let them use the Learnerator website without individually purchasing it. All the students had to do was enter a class coupon code and they were then able to join five of the AP course studies free of charge. The Learnerator site is essentially a self-quiz website, full of AP practice problems that will hopefully help students prepare better than typical AP material that has been available on its own. Each class has it’s own set of multiple choice questions, with the questions grouped into different categories from the subject. This type of division within the courses on the website allows for specific studying if a student is having trouble with a certain area of the subject. AP English teacher Karolynn Nowak is one teacher that has been using the Learnerator website in order to help her students prepare better for the AP multiple choice section of the English Literature test. “I think that the Learnerator website has a good mix of multiple choice questions in order to give students a good idea of what to know on the test,” Mrs. Nowak said. AP Statistics and Calculus teacher Greg Christy has also been using the Learnerator website in his classroom as a preparation for the AP test. He a believes that the Learnerator website is a good resource for students to use for multiple choice question study.

Who knew that yoga could create a healthy and positive mind set? Whether it is through downward dog or sun salutation, yoga poses provide relaxation and stress relief. Senior Claire Weber has started a new yoga club here at school to provide students and teachers with a fun and positive way to relax. “Yoga has always been a part of my lifestyle. I was inspired by Ms. Briddell, a former teacher at NV, who taught a yoga session during Class Olympics last year. Ever since I’ve been eager to learn more about yoga and one day start a yoga club here at school,” Weber said. Yoga club held their first meeting on March 17. Sophomore Class Government recently hosted their own fundraiser, Flock a Friend. The event was held from March 14 to April 8 and all proceeds were raised to benefit the Sophomore Class Prom. Flock a Friend is a fundraiser in which students pay $20 to have their friend’s yards “flocked,” or covered entirely with plastic flamingos. If a student is flocked, they may call a class government officer to remove them that night for a fee of ten dollars or they may choose to keep the flamingos in their yard for two days, allowing the students to remove them on their own and into another yard of their choosing. The flamingos could only be placed from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m., due to the consideration of the class officer’s schedules. "We've had high expectations for the flamingo fundraiser. The turnout started off slower than we had expected, but we are going to try to keep reaching out and spreading the messages for our fundrais-

ers," sophomore President Luke Kilcorse said. "We want to accomplish amazing things for our class and we will get there no matter how much work goes into it. All of the officers and representatives have worked very hard and we will continue to strive for the greatest no matter what the outcome will be." Beginning on March 14, students and parents were able to fill out an order form, which could be found on the school website underneath the “Students” tab. The form included information such as, an address of the person who is being flocked and special instructions in regards to the placements of the flamingos. However, if anyone did not want to take the chances of being flocked by another student, they were able to fill out an “Anti-Flocking Insurance” form for ten dollars. This agreement ensured that there would be no flamingos in the person’s yard throughout the fundraiser. Sophomore Class Government began flocking yards on April 13.

Everyone and their mother has binge watched a series on Netflix. It seems to be the current trend. As I find myself in my bed for hours at a time with a bowl of Goldfish by my side, eyes glued to my computer screen, I’ve noticed a trend in the shows I have watched. They all give me false hopes and a completely unrealistic expectation for real-life scenarios. Like where in the world will I find myself a Michael Scofield who would risk it and put himself in prison to break out someone he loves? And that isn’t a spoiler because the show is literally called Prison Break for a reason so calm down. (And by the way 10/10 would recommend). Or realistically, where is there actually a Tim Riggins, a drunk high schooler that cares more about his friends than he does himself? Can I be Serena Van der Woodsen and be blessed with beauty and a wardrobe that would impress anyone? The scenarios and characters in the shows we watch are highly impossible. Like what high schooler goes to fancy AList parties and polo matches like Serena and Blair? Because I surely haven’t found any of those in Sylvania. The shows that I have seen that are based on high school aged characters are nothing close to the things I have experienced as a high school student for the past four years. People, including myself, become obsessed with the characters and the shows. Others desire the character’s lives yet there are so many conflict that occur in them. The situations in the shows are more extreme than what we would see in everyday life here at Northview. For example pregnancy is a common conflict in a show, or alcohol abuse, or engagements. Is that really goals? I think not. The picture of high school that we get in our heads from how TV portrays it is nowhere near reality, at least here in Sylvania. Yeah, mistakes happen and things go wrong but do they go wrong as often as they do in shows? It’s to keep the viewers interested. That amount of conflict at that extremity of situations, isn’t possible. I can’t necessarily give examples because then I would ruin a few people’s days by giving spoilers. But then again, I don’t really need to because I’m pretty sure everyone has some sort of idea of a fictional high school in their heads.

Dress code is a topic that has been talked about many times, but it still seems like nothing has changed. Girls still get shamed for wearing spaghetti straps, along with shorts and dresses that come a little bit above your fingertips. There seems to an abundance of people calling out girls for wearing “inappropriate” clothing, but a lack of people teaching males to respect the girls around them. We need to address the root of the problem which stems from specifically calling out girls but not boys. The reason that girls cannot wear spaghetti straps is because boys might get “too distracted” and it will take away from their learning ability. How is it my fault that my shoulder is too “sexual” for teenage boys to learn? This is actually very alarming in itself. The female anatomy has been so sexualized in today's society that it has actually been said to prevent learning. I have never once seen a boy get called out for looking at a girl in an inappropriate way, just a girl being shamed because it’s somehow her fault. The dress code also has the ability to body shame. Everyone is different in their own way, and there are

many different sized/shaped bodies. 2 girls wearing the same dress can be seen very differently. One girl that wears a size 2 may slip by without being noticed, but a girl who wears a size 10 has a greater chance of getting called out, and that isn't right. The problem isn’t that girls are dressing inappropriately, it’s that boys are looking at them and thinking inappropriate thoughts. If a boy is getting distracted by the back of my shoulder then we have a bigger problem on our hands. The dress code even deals with a larger issue that can be seen in society quite often. It’s the idea that girls are somehow “asking for it”. That they need to protect themselves from unwanted attention, and that by wearing “inappropriate” clothing, they’re somehow asking for a response. It gives the message that male entitlement to the female body is socially acceptable, but girls will be punished. In order to deal with this problem schools need to acknowledge that this issue exists.

Who needs a prom date anyways? It’s finally that time of the year. The sun is shining, flip flops are out, and lots of us are counting down the days to Prom. Prom is the biggest event of senior year besides graduation. It’s a night where we pretend that we’re characters from Gossip Girl headed to a fancy dinner with dancing. Prom is a magical night with expensive outfits, Instagram-worthy pictures and a date. Let’s go back to that last one: a date. A date is probably the most stressful part of prom planning. “Should I ask someone?” “Who’s going to ask me?” “What if I don’t have a date?” Here’s the bigger question: Do you really need a date? I’ve been telling myself that yes, I need to have a date to Prom in order to have fun. But I’m still freaking out because I’ll be embarrassed if I don’t have one. I’m pretty sure I’m not the only one who gets nervous scrolling through Instagram and Twitter and seeing various “promposals”. Prom is getting closer and closer and I feel like I’ll end up going with my dog (I don’t have a dog, but you get my

point). Obviously, you don’t need a date to have fun at a dance, and no one should base their self-worth on their ability to get a Prom date. Plenty of people go to Homecoming and Turnabout without a date and it’s no big deal. Why is it so strange to us that someone could go to Prom without a date? Maybe it’s because Prom is THE event of your high school career. Every cheesy Disney channel movie about high school has some reference to Prom, and we all grew up watching these movies and dreaming about our own perfect Prom. Prom is a rite of passage, the official sign that we are grown up and mature. It’s definitely classier than Homecoming and Turnabout, so maybe it’s the fact that Prom is so formal that we feel we need a date. I’m not sure why I’m so worried that I’ll be at Prom alone though. I’ll be looking good regard-

less, and looking on the bright side, I won’t have anyone stealing my spotlight in pictures. Even if I did have a date, I would still look better anyways. -Nazihah Bhatti

Make your voice heard How much is too much? in deciding our future

The Presidential Election. One of the most important parts of our democracy is also one of the most dramatic. This time, it’s different. Many of us can vote now, so the election seems to mean more to us. Now that we can finally vote, we are paying more attention to the candidates and the statements they make. I applaud the kids who are seriously invested in the election and don’t just base their political opinion on their parent’s views or jokes on social media. I’ve seen and heard many fights over politics between friends and enemies in the hallways. Political views can make or break a relationship and they’re usually seen as a taboo conversation topic. Twitter is full of people who are either shoving their political beliefs down others throats or putting people down for having a different opinion. I can look through my timeline any day and find a bunch of Donald Trump jokes, or Bernie and Hillary comparisons. Our generation is more concerned with making jokes about the candidates than actually being informed on issues. Of course it’s funny to see that Bernie is the Urban Decay Naked palette and Hillary is The Nudes palette by Loreal. The jokes can be funny, but when it really comes down to it, we don’t really know that much about the candidates. In my opinion, basing your political

views solely off of what your parents believe is lazy. Of course your upbringing will influence your political opinion but you should still take the time to formulate your own views. Think about what issues matter to you and find out which candidate aligns most with your views. This election is totally unique from all others and that’s why it’s important for us young voters to be informed. It’s beyond annoying when some people just support a candidate for no reason. I respect that everyone has different views in politics, but I think it’s important to have a reason behind your opinion. Watch a debate, tune into a town hall or maybe just look up a candidate’s stance on issues. If you visit a candidate’s website you can find where they stand on most popular issues in this election. In an election season this crazy, every vote counts. As voters, we are responsible for our vote meaning we should know who we are voting for. Young voters shouldn’t just blindly support a candidate with no logical reason. We need to make sure we are informed before we vote. So who will you vote for? -Nazihah Bhatti

Every administrator, teacher, and counselor will tell you to get involved in your school. Even upperclassmen will tell you. But when is getting involved in so much, too much? It’s been said before, but some students are simply too involved. AP classes on top of a Varsity sport, while being involved in a number of clubs and having two jobs doesn’t seem humanly possible, does it? Somehow some kids manage to “make it work”. I know from experience. Did I mention needing to finish five scholarship applications by the end of the week because the two jobs they have now surely won’t cover that college bill? But ask them how much sleep they got the night before and I can assure you the number is lower than what teens should get each night. There simply isn’t enough time in a day for someone to accomplish so many things to the best of their ability. Yet, the students that are so involved in our school are the ones expected to be at all the events, expected to have wonderful grades, expected

to be models for the school. That’s a lot of pressure for a 17 or 18 year old kid. A student that has enough drive to involve themselves in numerous clubs, classes, and activities are the ones that end up being successful in their futures. Being involved makes you learn to manage schedules, interact with different groups and types of people, learn responsibility and many other things that will help them in the long run. With that being said, there still should be a limit on how much a student does do. But I mean, can anyone really tell you how much you can and can’t do? No. I guess the question rather than “how much is too much”, should be “how much can you actually handle?” Because that can change from person to person. It’s hard to get involved in so much and do so much to please everyone that you are working with and for. Take it one step at a time and pace yourself. 7 Does daylight saving time darken your day? OPINIONS

April 15, 2016

It’s that time of year again. Everyone’s favorite calendar event: Daylight Saving Time - Everyone complains about it, even more people dread it. Daylight Savings is often painted as the villain of the calendar year as everyone claims this one hour jump forward at 2 a.m. on the second Sunday in March “steals sleep away from us.” However, you must think critically and realize that what Daylight Savings actually does is provide us with exactly what is advertised: more daylight. Due to the fact that we wake when it is dark, we are able to experience every moment of sunlight for each and every day. A major complaint about this sudden shift forward in time is that we are left tired. I ask you to look on the bright side, or in this case the scientific side. An average complete sleep cycle lasts between 90 and 110 minutes according to psychologytoday.com. However, we only lose an hour, or 60 minutes, of time. This means you are losing less than one sleep cycle. So this begs the question: are you really that tired after Daylight Savings? Perhaps you’re not really all that tired. Maybe you just think you’re tired. Even if this loss of an hour really does leave you more exhausted than your typical day, it should not be nearly enough sleep deprivation to cause one to suffer inability to get work done, as suggested by

Jake Mossing’s opposition to this article. Additionally, I ask you to think ahead to the future - mainly summer. Summer is a time when you never want to see the days end and adventure awaits around every corner. But I ask you, what good is that if you sleep an hour of your morning daylight away? If there are an average 104 days of summer vacation, and daylight savings did not cause you to wake up an hour earlier, that means you would be losing 104 hours of summer daylight a year. That’s over 4 days of summer you’re giving up if you negate Daylight Saving time. One would have to be a lunatic if they are willing to sacrifice over 4 days of summer just for one extra hour of sleep. Another positive of Daylight Savings is the sweet reward it provides in early November. You gain a full hour extra of sleep just as the drudgery of the school year really begins to set in. So as you try to recover the fatigue of the loss of half a sleep cycle, I ask you to keep this mantra in your head: “four more days of summer, four more days of summer.” Daylight Savings becomes much more manageable when you look on the bright side, even if your morning is dark. -Peter Birsen

Losing an hour of sleep and waking up when it’s dark in the morning is not something that many people want to do. However, these are just some of all of the awful things that go along with Daylight Saving Time. Daylight Saving Time occurs every year on the second Sunday in March. The clocks turn an hour forward at 2 a.m. and stay that way until November 6. Probably the most dreadful thing about it is losing a precious hour of sleep. On the weekends many people tend to stay up a lot later, so every hour counts. In the morning, the effects take place and most of us need an extra cup of coffee to actually wake up. Many people are more fatigued and feel as if the day is flying by and they cannot get anything done. Productivity slows and panic sets in, as I tend to struggle to gather the energy and complete my homework before the day ends. Everything feels quicker and before you know it, it’s eight o’clock at night even though it feels like you just woke up an hour ago. Another problem that Daylight Saving Time introduces is longer days. This is definitely a good thing during summer, but at this time of year it causes many complications. It is way easier to wake up in the

morning for school when it is already light outside. My body feels more awake and I am motivated to take on the day’s tasks. However, Daylight Saving Time takes all of that pleasure away from us and causes it to be dark in the morning when we wake up. I lose all motivation and want to go back to bed because, for all I know, it could still be one o’clock in the morning since it’s dark out. In addition to this, fatigue sets in and people are still half asleep when going to school or work. This means that many more automobile accidents are likely to occur since people are tired. According to University of Colorado Boulder, in the first six days of daylight saving time there were 302 deaths and a cost of $2.75 billion over a 10-year period. The Monday after Daylight Saving Time is probably the worst of all, since people are still recovering from their lost hour of sleep. Honestly, Daylight Saving Time is pointless and unneeded. It puts unnecessary stress on many people and causes a wide variety of unhealthy habits and emotions to come into play. It is time for this tradition to stop once and for all, so that all of us can get the beloved sleep that we so desperately need. -Jake Mossing

Being skinny does not always mean healthy Some people think that just because you are skinny that automatically means you are healthy. I don’t believe that this is true. You could look at a girl who is skinny with long lean legs, but maybe she just eats junk food and doesn’t work out. But there could be another girl who is bigger and has thicker thighs that eats healthy foods and works out everyday. Would you still consider the skinny girl more healthy? Being healthy comes from the inside. If you eat healthy foods, get all the nutrients you need, feel good on the inside, and have confidence in yourself then most likely you are a pretty healthy person. This does not mean that every skinny person is not healthy, but just because you are skinny doesn’t mean you are automatically healthy. In life, some people work very hard to lose weight,

cut down on calories, and eat healthy. People have tremendous results if they put their mind to get what they want out of life, but there are also people who work too hard, or in the wrong way. You may look at a skinny person and think that they work out all the time and eat vegetables and all that “healthy” stuff. Which they may do, but some people may take it too far. Some people eat healthy foods and exercise a decent amount but they still aren’t stick skinny. This shows how health comes from the inside. Starving yourself just to become skinny isn’t healthy. Cutting back on food isn’t a healthy way to lose weight, it’s more about what you eat. Your body needs the nutrients from the food you eat to run and give you the energy throughout the day. Instead of cutting back on foods, you can eat healthier ones and portion what you eat so you don’t eat too much or not enough this can include fruits and veggies,

nuts, yogurt, and so much more. Cutting out processed foods and lowering your sugar intake can also help to make your diet healthier. Also, drinking lots of water gives you energy and nourishes all different parts of your body. Working out at least 30-60 minutes a day can also make great changes in your look. You don’t need a gym membership either, there are countless workouts you can do in the comfort of your own home. This can include cardio such as biking, running, and walking, and also different sets of strength workouts. Just because someone may look skinny, doesn’t mean they are healthy. Be smart with your body and how you treat it because you only get one. Make good choices and treat it like it’s one of a kind, because it is. -Korrin Zollweg

How to find THE perfect roommate?

By: Nazihah Bhatti

As seniors get ready to head off to college and juniors start looking at colleges, there’s one big question that seems to haunt us all: “Who will be my roommate?” Finding a roommate for college seems like a scary process. Here’s a helpful tried-and-true guide on how to find the perfect college roommate.

1

Join the Facebook page for your college: For example, “Ohio State University Class of 2020” or “Michigan State University Class of 2020”. I know what you’re thinking, Facebook died. Trust me, it’s the best social network for college, you’ll thank me later.

2

Get to know yourself: In order to find a roommate and potential friends, you’ll want to make a post describing yourself. Think about what you want people to know about you. The usual things are your major, favorite Netflix shows, pet peeves and taste in music. People will add you and message you and you’ll make friends based on who has similar likes/dislikes.

3

Go ahead and slide: Messaging new people is a great way to get to know people who you’ll be at school with next year. I scrolled through my university’s Facebook page for a long time, adding people who liked things like House of Cards and blocking people who liked country music...jk.

4

Narrow it down: After a couple weeks, I had narrowed my new friend pool into a group of 3 potential roomies. After another week of discussing studying habits, favorite foods, shoe sizes and much more, I finally found my roommate.

Thespians Prepare for the Spring Play claire weber staffer

After long hours of rehearsal, lack of sleep, and lots of coffee, cast and crew of A Murder Is Announced have been working hard for their upcoming performance, which will take place April 21-24. A Murder Is Announced is a mystery themed play based off the novel written by Agatha Christie. The plot is based upon a town of villagers who are intrigued by an advertisement in the local gazette which states: “A murder is announced and will take place on Friday October 29, at Little Paddocks at 6:30 p.m.” Whether it’s a practical joke or a hoax, an eager crowd of people gather at Little Paddocks during the appointed time to figure out what is going on. Before they know it, the lights go out and a night of mystery awaits. Rehearsals started February 1 and will lead up into the week of the show. At the beginning of the rehearsal pro-

cess, cast members rehearsed through Act I and Act II with scripts. As time progressed, they rehearsed without scripts and started to add in movement. As the show comes together, tech, set pieces, props, and costumes will be added, according to freshman Grant Perry. “The rehearsal process for this show has been a little bit atypical in comparison to shows in the past because during this time we also had to work on the Spelling Bee encore. After Spelling Bee ended though the rehearsals got a lot more difficult. It’s definitely a new experience and I’ll be surprised if anyone can guess who the murderer is before the end of the show,” junior Caity Hoffman said. Cast and crew are eager to put on a show in which twist and turns will be revealed as everything connects into a well thought out murder mystery, according to Perry. Tickets are currently on sale on the Northview Website.

N A I C I S U M E d R n U a l T i A v a FE H l e Dani Not many people know what the mellophone is, but for senior Daniel Haviland this instrument has played a large role in his high school career. Haviland plays the french horn in the concert band and the mellophone in the marching band. He joined band in the sixth grade and has been playing for seven years. Although he plays the french horn and mellophone now, when he was in junior high he also played the trumpet. During marching band season he is a quarter master. -Riley Runnells What inspired you to join band? My sister played the trombone and that was always really cool to me. I liked the trumpet a lot so I joined. Why did you decide to switch from trumpet to mellophone? Mr. Heath needed more mellophone players and I really enjoy that instrument. This year it was really cool because I was the section leader. What was your favorite experience in band this year? My favorite experience was the contest this year when we got a superior rating, which is the best we can do. I was really proud of the band and all we have accomplished.

The Northview Baseball team hit off their spring training over Spring Break in Ft. Walton Beach, Florida. The Boys played four games and concluded with an even record of two wins and two loses. The Cats fell short in the opener 5-4 in eight innings for their first game and won 13-3 in their second game over Franklin High School. In their third game, the Cats defeated Tippecanoe High School 6-3 and fell short once again in their fourth game. As the spring season begins, the NV baseball team is prepared to come out on top. “I think we are much better trained and ready to play as a team. This year, we are much closer with each other. Our team

chemistry is definitely an advantage this season,” junior Dane Foster said. The Spring Break trip to Florida had a significant impact on their team chemistry. “It helped us come closer as teammates and as friends. Not only did the trip help us individually, but also play better as a team,” sophomore Austin Diesch said. Along with team chemistry, the boys feel confident in their skills this season. “We hit a lot better this year. We also have a much better understanding of the game and have improved many of our basic skills individually and as a team,” Diesch said. With strong team chemistry and a skillful team, the Cats believe that they will reach the top of the NLL this season and have a successful season.

Girls’ Track gears up for season with weight-lifting katherine davenport staffer

The Girls’ Track team is kicking their season off with practice and training everyday. The runners have practice after school everyday and on Saturday mornings, while Sunday is their off day. Typically, the girls practice at either NV or Wildwood after school. They have also been training by lifting weights twice a week on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Before the team heads off on their run, they always make sure to stretch their muscles out. “We normally do everyday stretches and then do plyometrics. I like plyometrics better because I feel like they help me more and I feel warmed up,” freshman Erin O'Donnell said. The Girls’ Track team had their first meet of the new season on April 1. The meet took place at St. Francis at 3 p.m. and concluded later that evening. “I felt like we were really prepared for this meet and we will continue to work hard to get even better for our season,” junior Kylie Archibeque said. The team has a varied amount of events that they participate in with multiple different distances for races, so the meets typically last at least a couple of hours. “I like being able to watch the team in the events that I am not running in and I love the atmosphere because everyone is really supportive even when they aren’t

in the event,” freshman Meghan Vandenbroek said. The Girls’ Track team has many other events that they will be participating in throughout the season. Their next event will be The Golden W on April 8 at Whitmer High School. “I know we are really prepared for this meet and I am confident that we will do great as a team,” Vanderbroek said.

As the winter season ends for sports, the spring season starts and the Boys’ Track team hopes to prevail. They have been training for the season since the end of January, but their season didn’t officially start until late March. The Boys have had practices everyday after school at Wildwood, and have even committed to practicing Saturday mornings. The practices usually last around 60 minutes long with different daily workouts. Gym Teacher David Briggs is the coach of the distance team and senior Christian Bohlke is the captain of the distance team. Both teams consist of a variety of freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and seniors. “We have a lot of promising talent coming in. There are many people that will succeed through the track season and believe that we will be really successful,” Bohlke said. Track is a very difficult sport indeed, as thought of by many of the younger runners. “High school track is a lot more work and a lot more fun than middle school,” freshman Cooper Losey said. The Boys split up into two groups: shotput and discus throwers. They practice with their coaches who give them pointers and show them new techniques. “We are a young team with a lot of potential and by the end of the season I believe we will be near the top of the NLL,” freshman Jayden Bolden said. On April 1, the NV Track and Field team were busy participating in their first meet. For the runners, they didn’t do as well as they hoped, only scoring about 8 points. As for the throwers, there were only two boys throwing, so there was already a disadvantage there. Nonetheless, the season is promised to be a great one as many of the new and upperclassmen NV runners take on the track team headstrong.

Boys’ Tennis serves up first win jessie li staffer

The Boys’ Tennis team kicked their season off with a successful 3 to 2 win against Archbold on April 4. Varsity players freshman Dominic Ciucci, sophomore Antony Kamenny, and juniors Feross Sarsour and John Young all triumphed in the first match of the season. They pushed through the brisk, early spring weather and began the season on a winning note. “My hands were freezing,” Young said. “They slipped a few times during my serves and that lead to a few faults but nevertheless, my match went really well. We dropped the first three games, but proceeded to win eleven straight. Feross was playing great at the net and I think that’s really what put us over the top.”

Young was on the second doubles team with Sarsour and they won the match 6-3, 6-1. “I am really excited to start the season,” Sarsour said. “It took some time to get things going for our first match but we ended up with a win. It was fun playing with John and we both played really well.” Second singles player Ciucci beat the odds by making it onto Varsity as a freshman and winning his first ever high school match. “At first I was little nervous,” Ciucci admitted. “The weather didn’t help at all- it was so cold. I was wearing gloves the entire match which made it a little difficult to hold onto my racket. After the first game however, I started feeling more comfortable and I ended up winning my

match 6-0, 6-1. ” The Tennis team is a very young one, according to Coach Mark Fisher. Hrishi Saraiya, Antony Kamenny, and Jared Freeman are returning Varsity players from last year and, according to Coach Fisher, are all very strong players with good team leadership skills. “We plan on improving throughout the season by practicing and working on match preparations,” Coach Fisher said. “With a young team, training, team chemistry, positive attitude and mental toughness are very key to success.” The team is working superlatively hard to prepare for the rest of the season, with big matches like Southview and the Northern Lake Leagues to look forward to. The tournaments begin the first week of May go until mid-May.

To start off the year, the Boys’ Lacrosse team had to face the number nine team in Division One lacrosse in Ohio. They played Toledo St. Francis. The game was held at Northview, the first Boys’ Lacrosse game on the new turf field. NV lost to St. Francis 4-21. “Our team goals are to constantly be improving each practice and learning from our mistakes in each game we play,” senior Chase Baker said. NV was scheduled to play Perrysburg on March 24, but the game got cancelled because of the wet weather conditions. Their next game was not going to be until after Spring Break, so they had 17 days in between there first game and their second

game. Their next game was away at Avon. The Cats won the game with a final score of 17-6 getting their first win of the season. “As a team, we need to learn from our mistakes in previous games and to correct them in practice for the rest of the season,” senior Matt Nowak said. The Cats are currently ranked 112 in the state and look to improve their ranking throughout the season. “I am looking forward to it being my last season at Northview, and getting one last chance to play Southview,” Nowak said. The team’s next game is against Wester-

The LadyKat Softball season has begun and the team has high hopes for the season. They hope to improve their stats from last year and become closer as a team, according to sophomore Haley Mitchell. “I’m super excited about this season. We have a young team, but I think we are capable of more than people are expecting. It might be a little rough this year because we have a new coaching staff, but I think we can come together and play some good softball,” junior Taylor Vandenbroek said. April 4 was the team’s first official game against Central Catholic. The Ladykats started the game with an early lead and held it the entire game. They ended up winning a decisive victory of 10-2. The following day, April 5, the LadyKats traveled to play Whitmer, one of the top teams in the area. With the Panthers only up by one run, the game started out closely. The LadyKats came back and tied

it at 1-1 before the Panthers scored four runs in the sixth inning.. While the LadyKats fought hard, they lost 1-5. “We may not have won, but our team fought hard and I think we did well with being such a young team against one of the top teams,” Vandenbroek said. On April 7 the LadyKats were supposed to take on St. Ursula, but the game got rained out and will be made up later in the season. “I think our first games went well, especially being such a young team. We still have some work to do, but I see a lot of potential in our team and we are determined to win a lot of our games this season,” Mitchell said. The weekend of April 8 through 10 the team was supposed to travel to Akron and play in the Ohio Invitational, but it got canceled because of weather. The team had a game against Anthony Wayne on April 11 and the next games for the LadyKats will be April 13 at Springfield, followed by a game versus Napoleon on April 15.

16 March Madness ends in historical fashion SPORTS

matthew bishop sports editor

The 2016 edition of the NCAA men’s college basketball tournament, commonly referred to as “March Madness”, certainly lived up to its name. The field of 64 teams began play on March 17 when the Duke Blue Devils faced UNC Wilmington in the First Round. UNC Wilmington put up a fight, but Duke was too much and was the first team to advance to the round of 32 with a 93-85 victory. With the tournament officially underway, Madness ensued. One of the most followed storylines of every tournament are the upsets, when a small mid-major school takes down a large high-major school and spoils their season. One of the biggest upsets in tournament history took place when the 15 seed Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders knocked off 2 seed Michigan State. MSU had high hopes to win the whole tournament, but instead were sent back to East Lansing after a 81-90 loss in their first game. A few other major upsets that busted brackets across

April 15, 2016

the country were 14 seed Stephen F. Austin defeating 3 seed West Virginia 70-56, 13 seed Hawaii knocking off 4 seed California 77-66, and 12 seed Yale sending 5 seed Baylor home with a 79-75 victory in the school’s first NCAA tournament appearance in over 50 years. This marked the first tournament ever in which a 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 seed all lost in the first round. This year’s tournament also tied the record for most upsets in the first round with 13. The second round of the tournament was just as exciting. Perhaps the best finish of the entire tournament was in the matchup between 11 seed Northern Iowa and 3 seed Texas A&M. With under a minute left to play, Northern Iowa looked poised to complete the upset with a 12-point lead. However, Texas A&M forced multiple turnovers and tied the game with two seconds remaining. The game went into double overtime before A&M came out on top with a 92-88 win. The comeback win broke a record for the largest deficit overcome in the final minute of a game in NCAA tournament history Even with all of the first round upsets, only two double-digit seeds, 10 seed Syracuse and 11 seed Gonzaga, made it to the sweet 16. Syracuse made a run to the final

four and was the last double-digit seed standing before losing to 1 seed North Carolina. The last four teams remaining that travelled to Houston, Texas for the final four were Syracuse, North Carolina, 2 seed Oklahoma, and 2 seed Villanova. Villanova dominated Oklahoma in the first matchup, winning by a score of 95-51. This 44-point victory was the largest in final four history, and the 71% shooting by Villanova was the second-highest ever in the final four. North Carolina defeated Syracuse in the later game 83-66 to advance to play Villanova for the National Championship. The National Championship game between Villanova and North Carolina took place on a Monday night in Houston and turned out to be a great one. The game went back and forth the entire time with neither team being able to gain more that a 10 point lead during the game. Down three points with 4.7 seconds left, North Carolina’s Marcus Paige hit a long three-pointer to tie the game at 74-74. There was still time for one more shot, which Villanova’s Kris Jenkins took as time expired. The result was a game-winning, buzzer-beating threepoint shot that will go down in the history books and gave Villanova their first National Championship since 1985.

Senior Carol Wygant is running track for Northview this year. She is attempting to recover from rheumatoid arthritis in her knees and hopes to compete in a race this season. Wygant has been on Varsity Track since her sophomore year. She will be attending the Ohio State University next year to study Psychology and Art. -Matt Bishop and Andrew Headman

When did you start running track? I began running track in 8th grade. What is your pre-meet routine? My routine is listening to music on the bus, running a 15 minute warm-up, and then completing some dynamic stretches. What is your favorite memory from your track career? My favorite memory was when one of my teammates, Jenna Kill, paced me in the mile race and helped me break six minutes in my first ever outdoor mile run for track. I finished with a time of 5:57. What are your goals for this upcoming season? I hope to maintain my knees at least enough to train and race this season. It is hard to have put so much effort in for three years and not be rewarded my final season, but anything can happen and I will try to stay positive.
