Bree Fangman & Emma Swanson Co-Editors in Chief Christmas came early for Northview this year. In mid-November, Sylvania Schools announced that the nonprofit health care organization Promedica donated $1 million to build the Promedica Sylvania Northview Health, Wellness and Strength Complex. “Just like Promedica, we agree that in the Sylvania community there is a need for future wellness,” Superintendent Adam Fineske said. The tentative plan for the complex is to build athletic locker rooms and a community weight room. Additionally, the locker rooms for physical education will be renovated and a new athletic office, team meeting room, trainer room, and entrance will be built. Once that is done, NV hopes to add health and wellness classrooms. Essentially, these classrooms will be a medical laboratory. However, before this can be done, funding for a new part-time teacher must be acquired, according to Principal Steven Swaggerty.

The new complex will be situated where the preexisting weight room is - near the back of the main gym. The complex will be connected to the natatorium, making it easier to go to and from the facilities. On top of that, a whole new floor will be built. On this floor, there are plans to add windows looking out to the gym. The construction is scheduled to begin in the spring of 2019. The process is expected to take six to eight months at least. Overall, the project costs about $1.5 million and will add around 11,000 square feet to the school. Promedica donated most of the funding necessary for this project, but the NV Athletic Boosters, other donors, and the school district had to come up with the remaining costs. So, what will student life look like once the construction starts? For starters, those who use the weight room will still be able to use all the equipment, however, they will have to use it in the back of the auxiliary gym. As for every other student, the construction is expected not to cause any major disturbances. Once construction is finished, the complex will be

used for PE classes and athletic teams. Then, when there is a staff established to monitor the building and the people within it, it will be open to the community. For example, the Sylvania Senior Center or programs for children in the summer could use it. “Partnering with Promedica, who is focused on the wellness of everyone, is really amazing,” Dr. Fineske said, “Sylvania Schools being a part of that mission is going to benefit everyone.” As it gets closer to being built, the security precautions, as well as the organization of the security, will be discussed further. The need for a new and improved weight room and other renovations has been talked about for a long time. “Facilities aren’t everything,” said Mr. Swaggerty, “at the same time, having facilities to match our student’s talent and work ethic is really nice.” Moving forward, Mr. Swaggerty and Dr. Fineske want to keep improving the school by adding a softball diamond on campus, improving the locker rooms outside, and renovating the natatorium.

Cuffing season: good or bad? Taryn Wachowiak Staff Writer There’s nothing better than updating your status to ‘taken’ over the holidays, right? Wrong. When the winter rolls around, it’s common for people to want to have a significant other to spend time with, but why is there an entire “season” dedicated to being in a relationship? Though some people find it fun to be in a relationship during the winter months, cuffing season has a lot to do with society and the pressure to feel accepted. “Psychologically, we are...primed to seek mates in the winter,” psychiatrist Scott Carroll told Medical

Instead of spending time with friends

and family they have to worry about school and exams. With all the people that celebrate Hanukkah we should have a short break from December 3 to December 10. This would give a week to all students who celebrate Hanukkah to be with their friends and family. During this week students

could study for exams and get caught up on all their work before the semester ends. Continuing to have winter break with a week break for Hanukkah would be the most fair to everyone and I think would be very beneficial as students prepare for exams.

You walk into your class, sit down, and now you’re ready to start your day. A Northview coffee shop, I think it’s crossed all our minds at least one. Wouldn’t you love the idea of not having to wake up extra early, just to make time for that stop at Starbucks to grab your drink? If you answered yes to that, you’re not alone. For years now students have been asking for a coffee shop. Now this dream may become a reality. Business and marketing teacher, Patrick Sayre has been looking into the idea for a while now. “It would be very hard to do, but it is possible,” Mr. Sayre said. The only way we can make this possible is if we voice our support for a NV coffee shop. Talk to Mr. Sayre today; let’s be heard students!

Bad calls for Can we get a coffee snow days shop at Northview? Jenna Storey Staff Writer

Throughout the year we are usually given many snow days. Although they are very appreciated and a great surprise when you wake up, they are not the most convenient to teachers and administrators. I think some snow days are given away a little too easily. When we are given a snow day I usually still go and drive around during the day and realize that the roads are not all that bad. Even though I am glad we have a snow day, I am usually confused as to why we have one in the first place. Snow days are mostly given when the roads are icy or snowy. However, when snow days are given students most likely go and hang out with friends, go shopping, or get breakfast. Usually when we have a

snow day I go and get breakfast with my friends and then go to the mall because it is not busy. By doing this I am driving around way more than I would be if I had gone to school that day. Generally when we are given a snow day it always starts out as a two hour delay to see if the roads will get better later. Sometimes we do get a two hour delay which is better for teachers so we at least get some of our work done in school and are not so behind. I like two hour delays because our classes are shorter and you get an extra two hours to sleep. However, when we close completely, stuedents have twice the amount of work to do when we get back, and this puts a lot of stress on the student. By having a delay we do some of the work in class so we don’t miss as much and they have time to clear the roads.

It’s 7:15 in the morning, you’ve just gotten to school and find that you have a little bit of spare time before your first period class. As you walk by the cafeteria you get a scent of something that catches you by surprise. You stop dead in your tracks and take another big whiff. “Ahh”, you let out a sigh. “Peppermint Mocha”, you think to yourself. You walk into the cafeteria to see where the smell is coming from and you see a whole herd of students crowding around what used to be Cat Cave. You make your way over to the crowd of students, push your way through everyone and before your eyes, lies “Northview Coffee & Brew”, Northview’s new coffee shop. You stare in awe at the menu before snapping back to reality, “Uh, can I help you?”

FEATURES 5 Your boundaries, your way DECEMBER 14, 2018

Where to draw the line in relationships High school is the beginning of many new experiences for students. Whether that be new friendships, classes, relationships, or activities. With all the new experiences it is easy to get caught up in the moment or to just go with the flow with a friend group. However, it is also important to set and keep true to the boundaries you set for yourself. The first relationship is usually the most common area for boundaries to be crossed because you may not have as much experience with the difference between friendship and dating. When you are going into your first relationship it’s important to have good communication, to know where both of your boundaries lie, what you are and aren’t OK with, and what happens when a boundary is crossed. It’s also very important to stay true to the boundaries you set and to not budge if they are confronted. Back peddling on a previously set boundary only opens up more doors for more boundaries to be crossed. If a communicated boundary is crossed there needs to be a conversation about said boundary. Your boundaries should be respected in any relationship, especially with someone you are dating. It is a problem if the person you are dating does not respect your boundaries in a relationship. The google definition of a healthy relationship is when two people develop a connection based on: Mutual respect. Trust. Honesty. Support. These can all be solved with respecting boundaries and having good communication skills. A good rule of thumb is no means no. It doesn’t matter if you have done the same thing before but when ‘no’ is said the action should be stopped immediately. A friendship is slightly different than a relationship but a lot of the key points carry over like trust, respect, and support. The relationship may not be in a romantic way but you should still be respected by your friends, they should support you, and you should be able to trust them. The boundaries you set for friendships and relationships may be completely different, or the same, but whatever they are they must be respected by friends as well. Communication is also a key point in friendships. Like I said before, no one can read minds. So if you are unhappy with anything that may have happened that needs to be communicated. It isn’t fair for the friend if they do something that angers you but you don’t tell them, it wouldn’t be fair to be mad at the friend. Those actions may cause resentment and a divide in the friendship. The same goes for your friends and relationships too. If anyone is clearly uncomfortable or states they are they deserve your respect in either communicating the problem or stopping the action. Overall your boundaries must be communicated and enforced in any relationship. Respected boundaries have to go both ways for a healthy relationship and anything else would be one sided and not healthy for either party in the long run.

A shocking 30.8% of the pollers would use the words smart to describe themselves

81.4% would say that they have respect for themselves

Each issue, staffers are assigned or choose their stories on budgeting day, when we all share our ideas and inspirations for the issue. After final stories are due, the staffers get their edits. After edits from Ms. Huey, two peer edits are needed. Once those are complete, the final edits are from the section editor that pertains to your story and the co-editors. Catching up with the dance team Abby Summers Opinions Editor

The Northview dance team made their first appearance for the season on December 1 with all the kids that attended the kiddie clinic. The clinic started at 9am and went until noon, during that time dancers learned a combination to perform later that day at the basketball game halftime. “The kiddie clinic is a great money maker, it paid for most of our costumes. Also it’s so fun working with the cute little kids,” Sophomore Josie Varwig said. On December 7, the team had a dinner before the basketball game at junior Jenna Storey house. “Let me tell you it was one of the best meals I’ve had in awhile, thank you Mrs. Storey. Team dinners are a great way to bond with the everyone, it’s one of my favorite things about dance team,” senior Alexa Troendle said. Leading up to their first game this season the girls picked from a bag and received a secret sis. Before each game the girls get each other little goody bags and locker signs for goodluck. To make sure no one finds out who their sis is, they take it to the coach’s room the day of the game, and they are handed out. At the end of the season they will reveal who everyone’s secret sis is. One of the things the team all agreed on was that they would not compete a hip hop dance this year at any of the competitions. Hockey team gliding into the new year Ryan Storey Staff Writer

With a decent amount of experience on the Hockey team, the Cats look to improve off a slower start than preferred. On November 24 the Cats took on Liberty in a back and forth intense game, coming all the way down to the wire. The Cats tied in a battle on the ice by a score of 2-2. Following up their recent tie, the Cats took on Newark at Tam-O-Shanter on November 25. They dominated just about every aspect of this game as they proved to be way too much for Newark and they came away with a very dominant win, 7-2. Pulling out probably their best win of the season so far, the Cats had to prepare for their big matchup against last year’s state runner-up, the St. Francis Knights. On the last day of November, the Cats and Knights faced off in their biggest games of the year so far. The Knights graduated a very experienced and good senior class last year and the Cats wanted to take advantage of

their lack of experience. SFS came ready to play and the young SFS team stepped up when they were needed. The Cats couldn’t pull away with a victory against the Knights as they lost 3-1. “We are all disappointed with the loss, but we just need to learn from it and get better for the next time we see those guys.” sophomore Dougie Carter said. The Cats are scheduled to play SFS again on January 11, at TamO-Shanter. Hoping to get back to their winning ways, the Cats took on St. John's on December 1 at Tam-O. This is a rematch of last year's District Semi-Final, where the Cats unfortunately fell in overtime in a hard fought and intense game. This year’s game would be much of the same. Heading into the third period SJJ had a huge 5-1 lead, it almost looked like they would easily walk away with a win by four goals or more. This was not the case as the Cats found some fire on their bench coming out of the second intermission period. NV scored two quick goals in nine seconds to make it 5-3 and to really shake the game

up. Shortly after, they added a fourth goal from senior Jake Ruehle. Unfortunately, SJJ would add a sixth goal to put them up by two with little time for

the Cats to respond. With a late push and an empty net from NV they were able to pull one back and make it 6-5, leaving this as the final score. “That third period we had

was everything we knew we could do from the start of the game, we just needed to fix a few things and not start as slow and we will be fine,” senior Teddy Bugert said.

Grant Hartnett Staff Writer The Northview boys basketball team is off to a very solid start this season. They have taken each of their first 3 games, with one of those games being against a NLL opponent. They have beaten Woodward and Clay and they came away with a 64-59 win over Springfield. Now they hope to keep the wins coming from there. The NV boys basketball team set school record for wins in a season last year, and based on the way things are looking right now, they just might be able to break it again. They are riding a lot of momentum right now from their good start, so there is no sign of slowing down this talented NV wildcats team that is hungry for a NLL championship and then some. “I expect really good things,” Senior Luke Pawlak said. “I think we have a lot of talent and skill with good mindsets to back that up.

I think if we play our game we can go very far.” There is still a lot of season left, but with the confidence and talent that this team is playing with right now, beating the wildcats will not come easy for any team. The Wildcats made it to the playoffs last year, but got knocked out earlier than they had hoped to. Even worse, the team that knocked them out was their cross town rival, Southview. The wildcats are confident this year that they can make it passed that stage. It should be a very exciting season for this year’s basketball team. With a 3-0 start and a very talented team, who knows how far this team might go. like they had in the first two games too handle opponents the rest of the way. Sophomore Connor Liber is a star wrestler for the Wildcats. So what goes into building a lifestyle that benefits a wrestler’s game? Being on the Wrestling team takes time and dedication. Every-

day practices are two hours long, but Liber typically lifts before practice and stays 20 minutes after to workout a bit more. “My mindset generally is that I like to think going into the match I’m

going to win or I’m going to wrestle to the best of my ability,” Liber said. Liber’s ideal weight class is 152 pounds. To keep up with his goal, Liber tries to stay on a Ketogenic Diet,

which is a low-carb, high-fat diet. To prepare before a match, Liber just likes to bounce around. From time to time he prays, but no matter what he does, he gets his mind focused for the match.
