U prvo vrijeme njih dvoje rade portrete, a slobodne trenutke provode u društvu umjetnika poput Dijega Rivere, Fride Kalo, Pabla Nerude. Inicijalna faza njenog rada vezana je za formalne, teksturne i estetske eksperimente u prikazima mrtve prirode (Ruže), objekata (Čaše), enterijera (Vrata) i dijelova arhitektonskih zdanja (Stadion).
Tina Modotti began her engagement in art photography when she moved to Mexico City in 1924, together with her mentor, the famous American photographer Edward Weston. Initially, the two of them were making portraits, and spending their free time in the company of artists such as Diego Rivera, Frida Kahlo, Pablo Neruda. The initial phase of her creative work is related to the formal, textural and aesthetic experiments, while depicting still lifes (Roses), objects (Glasses), interior (Door) and parts of architectural structures (Stadium).
Brojni radovi Tine Modoti razotkrivaju i živote meksičke radničke klase (Čovjek koji čita „El Maćete“), njihove proteste i parade (Marš seljaka). Dio njenog opusa uključuje i vrijedne etnološko-antropološke prikaze meksičkih Indijanaca u regiji Oahaka (Žena iz Teuantepeka).
Her membership in the Mexican Communist Party (since 1927) had a major influence on her further creative work. For Tina Modotti photography was a tool used for documenting social changes and revolutionary spirit of the time in which she lived (Mexican Sombrero with Hammer and Sickle). She searched for her inspiration on Mexican streets (Misery), photographing people (Mexican Woman Elisa), prominent artists, intellectuals (Riccardo Gómez Robelo as a Geisha) and politicians (Julio Antonio Mella). Numerous photos of Tina Modotti uncover the lives of the Mexican working class (Man Reading “El Machete”), their protests and parades (March of Campesinos). Part of her oeuvre includes valuable ethnological and anthropological displays of Mexican Indians in the region of Oaxaca (Woman of Tehuantepec). Vanja Vukčević

TINA MODOTTI: Biografija
TINA MODOTTI: Biography
A photographer, a model, an actress and a revolutionary political activist Tina Modotti (1896-1942) was born Assunta Adelaide Luigia Modotti Mondini in Udine, Friuli Venezia Giulia, Italy. At the age of 16 she emigrated to the USA. At her early age Tina was engaged in dancing and acting. She played in several plays and silent movies such as The Tiger’s Coat, Riding with Death, I Can Explain, but also was the model. In the early twenties she met the famous American photographer Edward Weston and began to work as his assistant. In 1923 Tina went to Mexico City along with Weston. While working on portraits, both quickly entered into the art scene of the Mexican capital. She also found a community of cultural and political avantguardists and became the official photographer of the blossoming Mexican mural movement. Turning her attention to the politics, Modotti joined the Mexican Communist Party four years later, and her works became more politically motivated. At that time, she was publishing her photographs in magazines such as Mexican Folkways, Forma, as well as the much more radical El Machete. In 1929 she had a big solo exhibition in the National Library which was promoted as The First Revolutionary Exhibition of Photography in Mexico. Shortly afterwards, she was deported from the country because of her political engagement. During her exile, she stayed in Germany, Russia and Spain, and ten years later, under a false name, Tina Modotti returned to Mexico, where she died in the age of 46.
