High-quality child care looks like
SCIENCE
Children learn by doing, especially if the activity is play. Understanding how things work is a child’s most important job. From birth, children must learn to communicate and move through a whole new experience that is life as an individual. A child’s questions are unending – from where does food come from, to how do wheels stay on a car – children want to know. Visit our website to find quality-rated childhood educators that use toys, stories and dramatic play to help children find answers to their questions.
Inspire Experiment and observe. Experiment some more. This is how children make discoveries. Here are 10 ways to set your child on the road to discovering science.
1.
Acknowledge your baby’s accomplishment when she shakes her rattle. She just learned she can affect her world.
2.
Put a rubber ducky in baby’s bathtub. What else will float?
3.
When your baby drops his sippy cup to the floor, pick it up. Gravity is so entertaining.
4.
Race toy cars on a ramp or incline. Which is faster? The big car or the little car?
5.
Put containers of various sizes in the bath tub sandbox for filling, pouring and building. Ideas are formed and tested.
6.
Let your child dig a hole for a plant outside. Point out the changes in soil color and texture. Is there water in the bottom of the hole?
7.
Stomp a puddle or make a mud pie. Science can be messy. Experiments are fun.
What is your child learning? • Develops awareness of himself in relation to the rest of the world • Develops observation skills • Develops curiosity, problem solving and decision making skills • Has an opportunity to extend his vocabulary • Learns to form and test ideas • Learns to draw conclusions • Develops understanding of units of measure • Understands gravity and mass
8.
Look at a rock under a magnifying glass. Does it look like the surface of a planet?
9.
Look at pictures of places with different climates than your home. What would it feel like to be there?
10. Let your child water the garden. He knows he has an impact on the world when he helps things grow.

Frozen Yogurt and Fruit Granola Bites Kinley’s Kitchen One of our readers, Kinley, is sharing a favorite summertime snack! These homemade treats are perfectly refreshing and great fun to make as a family. Thanks to nordicware.com for this quick and easy recipe! Makes 12 servings. Ingredients 2 Tbsp peanut butter (or other nut butter of choice) 2 Tbsp maple syrup 1 cup granola 1-1.5 cups yogurt of choice Toppings: fresh strawberries, blueberries, and raspberries
Cooking Instructions STEP 1 In a microwave-safe bowl, heat peanut butter and maple syrup for about 20-30 seconds until melted. Mix in granola until fully coated. Fill each cavity in the French Tartelette Pan with a small amount of granola mixture to fill the bottom and press down. Add yogurt of choice over the granola until the cavities are filled. Top with sliced strawberries, blueberries, and raspberries. STEP 2 Freeze overnight for best results. When ready to serve, let pan thaw for 1-2 minutes so yogurt bites loosen slightly and gently push out of cavity to release. Be careful not to over-thaw as the bites will melt. Serve immediately. Store extra bites in freezer for ready-to-go snacks. Makes 12 tartlettes. Toppings: fresh strawberries, blueberries, and raspberries.
