READINESS Kindergarten Scan the code to get the Kindergarten Readiness Indicator. School readiness occurs when families, schools, early environments, and communities support and serve ALL children, so they have access to opportunities that promote success in both school and life. Children’s skills and development are dependent upon the relationships and interactions they have with the people in their lives before going to kindergarten. The Kindergarten Readiness Indicator Checklist helps families and early childhood educators identify a range of skills, knowledge, and behaviors children master as they move through the pre-kindergarten year. Admission to kindergarten is not dependent on mastery of any or all of these indicators. The Arkansas Department of Education and the Arkansas Department of Human Services encourages families and early childhood educators to use this checklist to help children enter kindergarten with confidence. If you have concerns about your child’s development, contact your primary care physician or the county health department in your community. Any type of paper will do. Show your child how to use measuring tape or long piece of string to measure the heights of objects around the house. Measure furniture, door knob heights, a favorite toy or the family pet. Mark the heights on your wall chart with a thick mark or stickers. Be sure to measure and compare your child and yourself. Number Play Tray Write the numbers 1 through 10 on individual pieces of paper and set aside. any container with a flat bottom and low sides. Pick a numbered piece of paper and ask your child to write the number in the salt with her finger. Shake the box lid to make the number disappear and do it again! Play Spy Numbers. Ask your child to look game of who can say the number first. Play the game when you go places too. Look for house numbers, numbers on license plates and gas prices on great big signs.
