Research tells us children learn best through play. It’s only natural that children are more open to learning when they are happy, and more likely to remember a fun experience. Child care providers are your partners in preparing your child for kindergarten and a future bright with opportunity. Give your child the best start in life with quality childhood educators that use story, dramatic play and hands-on experience to lead children to learning.

EXPERIMENTS

Make a Rainbow in a Jar Ingredients 1) Honey 2) Light corn syrup (add food coloring) 3) Blue or green dish soap 4) Cooking oil 5) Rubbing alcohol (add food coloring to contrast with the dish soap)

You’ll also need: • A tall clear container with a tight-fitting lid • A pipette or a drinking straw • A permanent marker or grease pencil

Step1: Prepare your container. Measure the height of your container and divide by six. Give the oil two times as much space as the other ingredients. Mark the portions on the container with the marker. Step 2: Prepare your ingredients. Determine your color scheme and add food coloring to the clear liquids. Note: cooking oil is not clear, AND it won’t mix with food coloring. Step 3: Slowly pour each ingredient in the order they are listed above. Aim for the center of the container as you pour ingredients 1 through 4. Don’t pour number 5 into the center! The alcohol needs to be gently dripped down the inside wall of the container using a pipette or a drinking straw. (See how to use a straw as a pipette below. ) Something unexpected is going to happen! See if you can guess by looking at the finished Rainbow in a Jar photo. What is happening? Here’s the science: The liquids remain separate because their densities are different. The ingredients are added in order so that the most dense liquid is on the bottom. Oil is the least dense of the liquids, so it floats to the top. Spoiler alert! What liquid is on the top?

Don’t miss the fun! Experiments should always have parental participation.

How to use a straw as a pipette: Put one end of the straw into the alcohol and cover the other end firmly with your finger. This creates a small vacuum that holds liquid in the straw. Lift your finger from the straw to release the liquid to gradually transfer liquid from one container to the other.

Ella’s EXPERIMENTS home. Thanks to onelittleproject.com for this quick and easy recipe! MATERIALS NEEDED:  1 Cup Shaving Cream  1 1/3 cups Elmer’s White Glue  1/2 Cup Stay-Flo Liquid Starch  Glow In The Dark Paint Prep Time: 5 mins

STEP 1 Combine 1 cup shaving cream, 1 1/3 cups glue and 1/2 cup liquid starch together in a large bowl. Mix well. STEP 2 If you would like to make multiple colors, mix the slime together WITHOUT paint then divide it into smaller portions. STEP 3 Next, add paint for color and work it into each portion by kneading the slime. Now, your glow in the dark slime is complete!

Frozen Yogurt and Fruit Granola Bites Kinley’s Kitchen One of our readers, Kinley, is sharing a favorite summertime snack! These homemade treats are perfectly refreshing and great fun to make as a family. Thanks to nordicware.com for this quick and easy recipe! Makes 12 servings. Ingredients  2 Tbsp peanut butter (or other nut butter of choice)  2 Tbsp maple syrup  1 Cup granola  1-1.5 Cups yogurt of choice  Toppings: fresh strawberries, blueberries, and raspberries

Cooking Instructions STEP 1 In a microwave-safe bowl, heat peanut butter and maple syrup for about 20-30 seconds until melted. Mix in granola until fully coated. Fill each cavity in the French Tartelette Pan with a small amount of granola mixture to fill the bottom and press down. Add yogurt of choice over the granola until the cavities are filled. Top with sliced strawberries, blueberries, and raspberries. STEP 2 Freeze overnight for best results. When ready to serve, let pan thaw for 1-2 minutes so yogurt bites loosen slightly and gently push out of cavity to release. Be careful not to over-thaw as the bites will melt. Serve immediately. Store extra bites in freezer for ready-to-go snacks. Makes 12 tartlettes. Toppings: fresh strawberries, blueberries, and raspberries.
