W hen we met, John was a chef and I was a market ing consultant and a sin gle mom of three amazing kids: Matt, Peyton and Grant. We both had busy, but different lives. We saw each other for the first time, July 24, 2016 in the Nightbird Bookstore parking lot off Dickson Street. We spent the day wandering Crystal Bridges…something we had done alone for years. We’ve been to gether ever since.
During our dating years, John had mentioned marriage a few times and I’d reply “I like having a boyfriend. It’s going to be funny when we’re 85 and I introduce you as my boyfriend.”
November 18, 2019 I planned a Friendsgiving dinner. Meanwhile, downstairs at the Garden Room, the staff was setting up the propos al area. John called me and said he needed help with something. I went downstairs and walked over our wooden bridge. I was met and guided by each of my kids down the path of John and I’s firsts. Matt had a sign that read “Remem ber When: I crossed the bridge into your life?” Peyton was beside John's truck, with her sign, “Remember: all the late night talks?” Followed by a sign in the bookstore parking lot “Remember: our first date?” Then, they guided me down to the Garden Room, where Grant had a sign saying “Remember when …”. They walked me to John standing amongst flower petals and candles. When he got down on one knee and proposed, I said “DUH!” John yelled to the nervous crowd upstairs “Erika said DUH, I MEAN YES!!!”, and everyone cheered.

A fter a week of rain, our wedding day brought sun shine. My kids walked me down the aisle to John. Turning that same corner I had turned just three years ago to see John in the same spot where we met, was beyond magical.Ourguests enjoyed a cocktail hour while our family of five ate inside the bridal suite, laughing, and taking selfies. I am glad we had that quiet time together. At the reception, we had two long ta bles with food along the middle to re flect a family style energy. We danced the night away. BrightBooths also made sure we remembered each guest. They had a memory book for pho tos and messages. After our sparklers send-off, John and I wandered down Dickson Street, and sat on the Walton Arts Center steps watching the city. A big thanks to our epic wedding coordinators Julie with the Garden Room and Ragan Hood-Morris with Olive Branch Events and Florals. They had everything planned per fectly! When I think of our wedding day it feels like a familiar smile, espe cially in the haze of 2020 and 2021.
We chose Sunday, October 27, 2019 for our wedding day. We said “hi” and “I love you” for the first time on a Sunday, so naturally our wedding was on a Sunday. The location would be the Nightbird Bookstore parking lot, and the reception would be at the Garden Room.
