Seven Inspirational Minds... One Thousand Executive Leaders... Two Days... One Outstanding Opportunity. On the 1st & 2nd October 2008, seven of the world’s most prominent leadership and business strategists will provide an unrivalled executive learning opportunity in Liverpool. The Liverpool Summit is about transforming the way we think. It’s about bold leadership, it’s about a progressive approach, and it’s about learning from and engaging with leading minds whose ideas and vision have already transformed the way we think about our world.
How do we lead in such uncertain times? What should leaders be focused on? How can we transform the future? These are some of the questions that will be addressed as you gain an understanding of the steps you need to take to create a bold future for you and your organisation.
The Summit is the primary business event of Liverpool’s European Capital of Culture programme. Over two days, conference attendees will be immersed in world-class thinking and ground-breaking ideas from authorities such as Michael Porter, Terry Leahy and Kofi Annan.
Don’t miss this opportunity to join over one thousand of the UK’s top leaders and senior executives in Liverpool for the most significant business event of the year. Learn. Engage. Create. Transform the future.

Summit Speakers MICHAEL PORTER
Arguably the world’s most influential strategic management thinker and rated by Accenture as “the world’s leading business intellectual”, Michael Porter’s views on competitive strategy have transformed corporations around the world. His ideas are the foundation for modern strategy courses, and his work is taught at the Harvard Business School. Michael Porter’s current course at Harvard is the University-wide graduate course, Microeconomics of Competitiveness, which is also taught in partnership with more than 65 other universities around the world using curriculum, video content and instructor support developed at Harvard. Professor Porter’s insights provide a rich framework for understanding how every organisation must have a clearly defined strategy to deliver superior results.
TERRY LEAHY
Terry Leahy is admired globally for building Tesco into a worldclass, multi-faceted organisation now developing rapidly in international markets. His reputation led him to being chosen as Britain’s “Business Leader of the Year” in 2003 and the Fortune European Businessman of the Year for 2003. In a 2005 poll he was selected as Britain’s most admired business leader by Management Today and a Guardian Unlimited Politics panel found him to be the most influential non-elected person in Britain in 2007. Terry was appointed Chief Executive of Tesco PLC in March 1997. He received a Knighthood for services to food retailing in the 2002 New Year Honours.
CLAYTON CHRISTENSEN
A revered Harvard Business School Professor, Clayton Christensen is the author of two world best-sellers, The Innovator’s Dilemma and The Innovator’s Solution. As one of the world’s most soughtafter authorities on how to develop a framework for innovation, Christensen will give you the tools for assessing the value of potential innovations and predicting competitors’ actions. An outspoken critic of the notion that a managers primary aim must be to appease investors, Christensen argues that such behaviour focuses exclusively on quarterly results. Thus many management teams hesitate to invest in promising innovations that are likely to hurt near-term financial performance. Consequently, leaders facing disruptive change lose both direction and strength as they try to focus on short term shareholder value.
RENEE MAUBORGNE
As co-author of the world best-seller Blue Ocean Strategy: How to Create Uncontested Market Space and Make the Competition Irrelevant, Renée Mauborgne has contributed to a dramatic shift in the way organisations view strategy. “Blue oceans” are new untapped market spaces ripe for growth and the market leader your firm - swims in the clear blue, far from rivals fighting over a shrinking pool of profit. Through a systematic process she calls “value innovation”, your organisation can identify your own “blue ocean”.
WILL HUTTON
As an author and broadcaster, Will Hutton’s best known and most influential works are economic and political commentaries The State We're In and The World We're In. In his most recent book, The Writing on the Wall: Why We Must Embrace China as a Partner or Face it as an Enemy, Will Hutton examines Western concerns and responses to the rise of China and the emerging global division of labour. Hutton argues that the Chinese economy is running up against a set of increasingly unsustainable contradictions that could have a damaging universal fallout.
CHRIS PATTEN
The former European Commissioner for External Relations and Governor of Hong Kong, Chris Patten is an astute commentator and speaker on world issues with a wide ranging experience. He is also currently at work on his latest book, The Way the World Works, due to be published in 2008 which will deal with how our new globalised world really operates. It will analyse such issues as terrorism and organised crime, energy and the environment, drugs, weapons, finance and global government.
KOFI ANNAN (by satellite link)
One of the world’s most influential political leaders, Kofi Annan served as the seventh Secretary-General of the United Nations from 1997-2002. He was the winner of the Nobel Peace Prize in 2001 and was described by the former US ambassador to the United Nations, Richard Holbrooke as "the best Secretary-General in the history of the UN". Mr. Annan was widely acclaimed for his work in reforming the UN, mobilizing the international community in the battle against HIV/AIDS, and undertaking significant steps against the global terrorist threat.
