STOP PRESS... Barcelona inspired keynote
“Connecting people with the waterfront”
KEYNOTE SPEAKER DAVID MACKAY played a key role in making Barcelona the best-designed city in Europe. His practice, Martorell Bohigas Mackay Arquitectes, is credited with much of the planning and architectural design that helped Barcelona win the RIBA Royal Gold Medal for Architecture in 1999 - work praised as "perhaps the most interesting example of urban regeneration in the western world today" by Lord Richard Rogers. Since Barcelona Mackay has been involved in numerous large urban regeneration projects in Britain, Ireland and elsewhere.
Major sister city presence A KEY FEATURE OF THE EVENT WILL BE THE PRESENCE OF LIVERPOOL’S sister cities of San Francisco and Shanghai. Senior municipal delegations are expected from both, and there will also be major case studies – from San Francisco, the Piers 27-31 project, and from Shanghai, the redevelopment of the Bund Waterfront on the Huangpu River.
WATERFRONTEXPO IS THE GLOBAL EVENT FOR WATERFRONT regeneration and development. Since launch in 2003, delegates and exhibitors – including municipal authorities, developers, architects and investors – have attended from 400 cities and 60 countries. WaterfrontExpo 2008 is being hosted by Liverpool with the official support of the Liverpool City Region through The Mersey Partnership and the North West Development Agency. It is in many respects the perfect host city. Liverpool is the European Capital of Culture 2008 and the famous Liverpool waterfront, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, lies at the heart of a major city-wide urban regeneration and development programme designed to revitalise the waterfront as a key place to live, work and play.
Conference programme “not to be missed” No less than 10 major case studies plus other presentations have been carefully selected to illustrate how a diverse range of large – and small – urban areas are setting about reconnecting their people with the waterfront.
This year’s theme emphasises the importance of people and the local community in determining the success of a development, particularly in terms of its long-term sustainability. As is usual, the geographic spread of the case studies is global, ranging from Brisbane, Puerto Rico, San Francisco and Shanghai on the one hand, to Belgrade and La Spezia in continental Europe, to Irvine Bay, Liverpool and Margate in the UK.
STOP PRESS... Who will be there?
The case studies will highlight different aspects of how people interact with the waterfront – be it through leisure & tourism, shopping, living, working or travelling. At one end of the scale we open the door on Liverpool One, Europe’s largest shopping complex located on a key part of the city’s waterfront. At the other end of the scale we investigate the Turner Margate, a fascinating example of how a prestige but community-focused project can serve as a catalyst for the broader regeneration of a once popular seaside resort. Accompanying the case studies are generic presentations examining the ways and means of attracting people to the waterfront, from the importance of destination branding, to the role of events.
Innovations draw on your feedback YOUR FEEDBACK RECEIVED FROM PAST WATERFRONTEXPO EVENTS HAS LED TO THE INTRODUCTION OF TWO EXCITING INNOVATIONS:
Discussion groups • Participants will be able to attend over four hours of discussion groups hosted by exhibitors on their stands. These intimate and relatively informal sessions are certain to attract colleagues who share your interests – what better way to network and share knowledge? • Discussion groups will be promoted on our website and you will be able to book your place in advance. • Refreshments will be available throughout with lunch also being served on the participating exhibition stands - so you won’t have to leave or miss any of the heated debate!
Networking technology Conference delegates will have FREE access to Waterfront Connect© to facilitate successful networking. This comprises simple and straightforward communications tools and includes the widely acclaimed Spotme conference navigator technology. You will be able to: • Arrange meetings before the event via the WaterfrontExpo website. • Learn about, locate and schedule meetings with participants. • View the discussion group programme in advance and arrange your personal schedule. • Send electronic messages to participants and questions to speakers using Spotme. • Save all the information on contacts and leads made at the event directly into your email address book.
THE WATERFRONTEXPO PROGRAMME HAS BEEN CAREFULLY DESIGNED to ensure that all those people involved in waterfront regeneration and development projects gain the maximum benefit from networking, and sharing knowledge and best practice. Those who will benefit from WaterfrontExpo include: • Municipal authorities, regional development agencies and developers seeking to identify the finance and services required to develop waterfronts. • Professional providers of the products and services crucial to waterfront regeneration and development projects, including architects, investors, planners, marina owners, tourism agencies and engineers.
More choice in 2008 WATERFRONTEXPO HAS ESTABLISHED A DESERVED REPUTATION for a top conference programme – but we can’t stand still! This year there is more on offer: • Better balance between case studies relevant to requirements of smaller towns and those dealing with larger scale projects. • Special investment sessions aimed at municipal authorities, developers, investors and financiers will address the key issues of project structure and finance for waterfront development projects. • Exhibitors will be hosting discussion groups for delegates on their stands and so share their expertise far more effectively.

FOR ALL
FOR DELEGATES
Morning guided walk of Albert Dock
New Brighton 11.00 – 13.00
Pier Head/Mann Island 13.00 – 14.30
New Brighton is a seaside resort located on the north east tip of the Wirral Peninsula opposite Liverpool and the tour starts with a trip through one of the famous Mersey Tunnels. In the late 19th century New Brighton became a popular seaside resort serving Liverpool and the Lancashire industrial towns, but after World War II its popularity slumped. Now plans are afoot to redevelop the waterfront in a sustainable and exciting manner.
This tour takes in the UNESCO World Heritage Site which comprises the iconic 3 Graces - the Port of Liverpool Building in Portland stone designed by Arnold Thornley in 1907, the Cunard Building named after the Canadian shipping magnate Samuel Cunard, and the granite Royal Liver Building by W.A. Thomas. Mann Island, next to the 3 Graces, is home to the new Museum of Liverpool, the striking mixed-use development by the architects Broadway Malyan; the new Leeds Liverpool Canal basin; and the redeveloped Pier Head.
10.00 – 11.00 Situated in the largest group of Grade I listed buildings in the UK and adjacent to the conference venue, the Albert Dock houses many award winning visitor attractions. This informal opening to WaterfrontExpo 2008 provides the perfect opportunity to learn about the International Slavery Museum, the famous Beatles Story, the Tate Liverpool art gallery and other points of interest in the dock. Other landmarks will also be pointed out.
WEDNESDAY 5 NOVEMBER SITE VISITS
Liverpool Docks & Seaforth Container Terminal 11.00 – 13.00
Waterfront boat tour 14.15 – 16.15 There's no better way to experience Liverpool and Merseyside – and get ready for the Welcome reception than from the deck of the world famous Mersey Ferry. You'll learn about the city and the region's fascinating history, see its spectacular sights and discover its unique character.
NOTE: Partner programme This is free of charge and runs alongside the conference giving partners the opportunity to discover areas of local interest and tours are hosted by professional guides. In addition to the tours outlined, partners of registered delegates are welcome to join the waterfront boat tour and Welcome Reception on 3 November, and the Civic Reception on 4 November.
Liverpool dominates Britain's container trade with North America and serves more than 100 other non-EU destinations from China to India, Africa, Australia, the Middle East and South America. This tour takes in key areas including the Seaforth container facility and delegates will be able to disembark from the coach and view the site of the new post-Panamax container terminal. This will be completed in 2011 and will simultaneously accommodate two of the new generation post-Panamax container ships. FOR PARTNERS Chester and Port Sunlight tour 9.30 – 17.00 Port Sunlight was built by soap entrepreneur William Lever to gave his workers better housing in aesthetically pleasing surroundings. The tour continues with the picturesque historic Roman town of Chester with its mix of Medieval streets, ancient history and Georgian architecture. It was here that the 20th Roman Legion, conquerors of Iceni Warrior Queen Boadicea, built Fortress Deva to repel Welsh Tribes. The tour offers participants time to walk around the traffic free city centre to enjoy superb shopping facilities.
