Welcome to the Summer issue of NW Golf Adventures Magazine

Most of the golfers reading this magazine probably keep their rounds of golf friendly, maybe with a little action between buddies on the weekends. I would venture to guess that most of them focus on playing their own ball each time they go out, looking to beat their lowest score.

I’d like to point all those players in a new direction. Golf is more fun when there’s something on the line or when you’re playing in an event that takes you out of that comfort zone. I’m not talking about playing in a big amateur event, I’m suggesting you find a team event to enter.

Team events, regardless of format, are a great way to try competitive golf; it’s a step above your typical Saturday game. You’re playing someplace new and you’ve got a partner to help take some of the pressure off your game. Even though I play several individual events each year, there are a couple of partner tournaments that I look forward to.

Two years ago, my son and I started playing in the Oregon Golf Association’s Parent-Child Chapman. We’ve had success in the event, but it’s really about spending a day together on the course. The other event is our club’s annual Goose and Gander Tournament. My wife started playing golf because I enjoy it and she’s improved every year. Couples events are a great way to take time away from the daily grind and work together on the course.

Whether you play with a buddy or with a family member, go find a partner event and try something new. You’ll focus on your game and learn to hit shots when you’re under pressure.
