Editor’s Note Wee! Spring is here! What better way to honor the season of growth and newness than to feature the bountiful farms right here in Portland’s backyard? We’re excited to bring you this year’s edition of our CSA Resource Guide: a colorful centerfold with all you need to know to keep a fresh, delicious supply of lovingly harvested fruits and veggies (plus other goods like fish, meat and eggs) coming in the door all season long! Yum! We’ve also rounded up a bunch of summer camps where kiddos can get firsthand farming experience on real working farms, as well as generally get their hands (and feet and everywhere else) good and dirty while soaking up the spoils of Mother Nature. There’s even an immersive family pirate camp! For real! Run on over to p. 24 to learn more. In fact, you can meet some of those camps – and many more – in person at our 6th Annual Summer Camp Expo on Saturday, April 8th at OMSI: a full day of activities, demos, raffles and all sorts of freebies! Hope to see you there!

Helpful Tips for a Successful Trip Check the rules ahead of time.

Every festival has slightly different regulations, and they might change from year to year. Maybe absolutely no kids are allowed (it’s a legal thing!), or just babes in arms, or maybe there are only certain hours when kids are permitted on site. Double check before you make the trip. If possible, try to find fests with kid-friendly features like Tuxedo Jimmy, the balloon artist you’ll find at this year’s Portland Spring Beer and Wine Fest.

Know your terrain. A stroller might make things easier for walking and napping, unless there isn’t much space to maneuver. Chances are good you’ll have a porta-potty situation on your hands, so make plans that’ll work for little bottoms or diaper changes on the go. Come packed with snacks. Food options can be sparse, not geared toward kids, and sometimes spendy to boot. If you’re headed to a fest that doesn’t allow picnics, get in line for food before the grumps start kicking in. It might take some time to get your order. Go early. “The later it gets in the day, the rowdier a crowd is likely to get, so consider getting the kids home at a reasonable hour,” says Chris Crabb of the Oregon Brewer’s Festival. Besides, if you visit early, brewers are less likely to have run out of popular and rare tastes.

Kids first, beer and wine second. If you’re used to a kid-free beer and wine experience, you might have to adjust your expectations when junior comes along. Meltdowns are sure to come quickly if all you’re doing is waiting in line and talking tasting notes. Instead, use a tag-team system, plan plenty of activities for the little ones, and have a great time as a family! - Kelley Gardiner NW Kids Magazine | 13

Camps for little farmers, homesteaders and treehuggers by APRIL CHRISTENSEN

(and pirates!)

Let’s be honest: the best thing about summer is spending long days outside getting dusty, dirty and sweaty. Wouldn’t it be cool to also be learning about the amazing things that nature can do? From exploring the great outdoors and getting close with animals large and small to learning about food from farm to table, these farm and nature camps have something for every kid!

Adventure WILD! Spending time in the great outdoors is the best way to instill a lifelong love of nature in children. At Adventure WILD! kids explore the ways that nature, science and art are interconnected in the world around us. On Thursdays in July and August, campers will visit The Mazamas on Mt. Hood and learn about climbing, mountaineering and hiking. This is the perfect camp for outdoor enthusiasts, young naturalists and animal lovers. And best of all, proceeds from the camp help send metro-area sixth graders to Outdoor School. The PJA Perspective Portland Jewish Academy (pjaproud.org) provides a rich academic and cultural learning experience for kids from early childhood through 8th grade. We’ve invited budding journalists from PJA’s writing club for 6th-8th graders to join our team for a series that gives you a glimpse into thoughts and life – from their perspective.

Remembering Our Days at Luscher Farms by MAZZI KATZEN AND GABRIELLE KROEPFL

From the time we were seven until we were ten, we attended a day camp at Luscher Farms, where we gardened, fed the chickens and cooked international cuisine. We weeded rows of vegetables and picked tons of the sweetest golden raspberries. In the mornings, we cooked lunch in the kitchen of the farmhouse. We took the fresh vegetables from the garden and turned them into recipes from all over the world. We also made crafts inspired by other cultures that seemed both amazing and different from ours. While remaining close to home, we traveled to India, Mexico, Japan, Germany, Thailand, India and Italy through their food, language and holidays. We learned the wondrous ways that we can grow our own food, and we discovered the world through food. Some days, we went to Hazelia Park and played for hours, never wanting to go. We ran across the short, soft grass and jumped over sprinklers, soaking ourselves to our hearts’ content. From atop an old tractor, we looked out onto a field. Past the field were the trails where we hiked and picked blackberries, thorns tugging at our skin, but we didn’t care. We sat in the shade of an arbor and sucked on fragrant honeysuckle. We ate picnics under the time-worn, shady willow tree. We laughed, we enjoyed and we cooked. Each year, we decided that we would go back. Sadly, we have grown too old for our beloved camp at Luscher Farms, but we are now considering returning as junior counselors. We wish that we could go back in time and feed those chickens once again... Gabrielle Kroepfl and Mazzi Katzen are seventh grade writers attending Portland Jewish Academy. Gabrielle plays tennis and volleyball. She enjoys reading, drawing and hanging out with friends. Mazzi enjoys softball, soccer and having fun with friends. Both girls are members of an after-school writing workshop at PJA.
