Editor’s Note Thanks for picking up The Glass Issue of the Leaf ! I MADE MY FIRST PIPE out of an L-shaped carburetor part that I cleaned and polished into a workable Cannabis smoking device in my dad’s auto shop. This was back when smoking weed meant choosing between an apple, a pop can – or the one friend who was lucky enough to have a disgustingly resinated pipe. These early days of Cannabis slummery gave me an immense appreciation for clean and functional art, which we have documented in the Leaf for a decade now. One of my earliest stoner memories was buying a bong (tobacco water pipe) for the first time at Piece of Mind, with a feeling of sexy fear that came with smoking an illegal drug in an inspiring way. Walking through the glass shop full of colorful art shaped my view of Cannabis as more than just a drug to consume, but a lifestyle defined by art that is delivering the best feeling in the world: getting baked!

TODAY, GLASS CULTURE HAS BLOWN UP INTO AN ACCEPTED FORM OF MAINSTREAM ART THAT’S RAPIDLY EXPLODING IN AWARENESS AND VALUE.

Today, glass culture has blown up into an accepted form of mainstream art that’s rapidly exploding in awareness and value. Custom pieces fetch hundreds of thousands of dollars and get millions of views on social media – transfixing the heady community with innovative displays of art that will get you stoned just looking at them. And on a more functional level, each piece made by hand carries the energy of the artist into each sesh – with the intention of the creator carrying the smoke and vapor into the lungs of a lucky recipient. It is an honor to be featuring the legendary Mothership Glass and Scott Deppe – who also came on @leaflifepodcast to talk about the history and vision of Mothership – along with a ton of other amazing glass artists in this visually enticing edition of the magazine. We have unique pieces spotlighted in all editions, with different artists highlighted in each, and I hope you take a look at our brand new website – leafmagazines.com – to see our complete gallery and tons of other unique content, podcasts, and the highlarious Stoney Baloney. Remember to buy American glass whenever possible, to support your local head shop or glass artist, and to always smoke from clean glass!

ozens of young staffers in the Biden White House have been suspended, asked to resign or placed in remote programs due to past Cannabis use, reported multiple news outlets in March. A number of young staffers were either “put on probation” or outright canned because they admitted past Cannabis use in a document they filled out as part of their lengthy background check. “I find it absurd that, in 2021, marijuana use is still part of a security background check,” said Tommy Vietor, who was on the 2008 Obama team and subsequently worked as a National Security Council spokesperson. “To me, marijuana use is completely irrelevant when you’re trying to decide whether an individual should be trusted with national security information.”

NE GOVERNOR CLAIMS MARIJUANA IS ‘GOING TO KILL YOUR KIDS’

N

ebraska Governor Pete Ricketts’ remarks on the supposed dangers of marijuana were widely condemned after he said at a press conference, “If you legalize marijuana, you’re going to kill your kids.” “These words didn’t elevate the discussion,” scolded the Lincoln Journal-Star in an op-ed. “Rather, his oversimplification of the topic ignored the pleas of parents with sick children – and that the legislation being debated later that day was specific to medical uses.” Despite the mild-mannered nature of the newspaper’s rebuke, the fact remains that Gov. Ricketts’ remarks weren’t just an “oversimplification,” of course – they were an outright falsehood. Nebraska, along with Idaho, is one of just two states left that have absolutely no protection for medical Cannabis patients, not even a lowly CBD law.

Customers had requested them for some time, despite varying opinions on their safety, reports Fox 4 Kansas City. Many patients prefer vape pens for their convenience and quick effects. “This is by far our number one request,” CEO John Mueller of the Greenlight chain of dispensaries said. “It’s an exciting day for the industry.” Missouri dispensaries said they will be working to meet a big, pent-up demand from customers for the vape products.

L

awmakers on March 18 filed the latest bill to legalize Cannabis in Delaware. Pressure is greater than ever before on the General Assembly to pass it, according to Delaware Online, with neighboring states moving to legalize and with advocates citing the need for job growth to recover from the economic effects of the pandemic. House Bill 150, introduced by Rep. Ed Osienski (D-Newark), would allow adults 21 and older to buy up to an ounce of weed from a licensed seller. It would tax Cannabis at 15 percent, which is lower than most states that have legalized. Lawmakers want to remain competitive with nearby states such as New Jersey, and to cut down on illegal sales. State Auditor Kathy McGuiness’ office estimated Delaware could bring in $43 million a year from legal weed. The bill’s sponsors stress that Cannabis revenues are not a “stable revenue source,” especially with nearby states also establishing legal marijuana markets.

introduce into the human body a controlled dangerous substance.” While both marijuana and its psychoactive derivatives are Schedule I drugs under the Controlled Substances Act, in 2016 after enacting the framework for medical Cannabis in Maryland, the Maryland General Assembly specifically added an affirmative defense for the possession of marijuana – meaning you cannot receive a paraphernalia charge if the substance you’re using it to consume is Cannabis. Sound ridiculous? Wait, it gets more preposterous. While there is an affirmative defense to possession of paraphernalia if you are intending to use it to ingest marijuana, there is no legal protection for the store that sold it to you. That is why a head, glass or vape shop has to kick you out if you start talking about any drugs in the store. If the intent of the use of the pipe is to ingest or inhale a CDS that is not marijuana – including concentrates and any Cannabis product in its non-botanical form – then the store has committed a crime in selling you the glass pipe. Confused? You should be. Not only do the laws against paraphernalia make no sense, they legitimately harm the dialogue that happens between a sales person and a prospective customer. In that way, the paraphernalia laws harm everyone – restricting the free flow of accurate information and creating an adversarial relationship, where secrecy is encouraged and store owners are incentivized to learn nothing about their clients.

Since 2008, Mike Rothman has counseled clients regarding Cannabis laws and regulations as the founder and principal of the Medical Cannabis Law Group and the Law Office of Mike Rothman in Rockville, Maryland. Mr. Rothman has testified on Cannabis laws and regulations before the Maryland House of Delegates, taught classes, and lobbied the federal government on behalf of patients and businesses. Mr. Rothman’s Law Office focuses on criminal defense, including use of the medical Cannabis defense.

WHERE DID YOU GO TO SCHOOL AND WHAT DID YOU STUDY? I went to Brightwood for my RNA, and after getting it I kind of decided I didn’t want to be in that field of healthcare anymore. Cannabis has always been a part of my life … I knew I wanted to do something in that area. So I stopped school for a little while, but I do plan on proceeding in the next month or two. ARE YOU FROM GERMANTOWN? DO YOU LIKE IT HERE? Yes I am, I was born and raised right in the heart of Germantown – right down the street, it’s where my heart is. We definitely live in a very diverse area, you see friendly people from all walks of life. The food is all right – they definitely have a little bit better food in DC. But overall, Montgomery County is a great place to start a family. DOES YOUR FAMILY USE CANNABIS? So, my family actually was always against Cannabis. They are West African, so they never knew Cannabis could be used as medicine. When I first got into the Cannabis industry, they wanted me to go back to school for nursing. I actually started turning them over with topicals, because my mom struggles with

pain and my father struggles with nerve damage in his feet. They expressed that they have never felt the same relief as when they tried Cannabis products. WHAT ARE YOUR HOBBIES? I love to sing – my co-workers will tell you that I’m here singing all day long! It might sound a little corny, but I love doing little Tik Tok dance videos with my three-year-old daughter. I also have a lot of friends with local businesses, and I like to be a brand ambassador for them. One of my friends makes pastries and is looking to open a bakery soon, so I’ve been helping her. Shoutout to @cakeebabbyy on Instagram. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE WAY TO CONNECT WITH PATIENTS? This may sound like a weird answer, but I connect with patients through pain. Sometimes that means connecting with a patient about something they have gone through in life, and relating to their daily struggle. Other times it means physical pain, because I have dealt with severe back pain issues and can show them I truly understand their situation.

CANNABIS FOR HEALTH & WELLNESS

Olivia Zebron Olivia Zebron has got it going on. From improved skin care to a reduction in migraines, anxiety and depression, the 27-year-old native of Severna Park, Maryland has found a path to a better life through medical Cannabis. “I’ve always had migraines and chronic pain,” Olivia said. “But I never loved using prescription drugs because they knock you out. The idea is to have something you can function with.”

Olivia makes use of concentrates, dabbing terpenespecific strains dominated by myrcene, beta-caryophyllene and terpinolene to reduce early arthritis.

“I want something that is a little more sedating because of my pain and anxiety – something that will suppress me a little but won’t keep me down,” she said. “No one wants to be stuck in bed all day.” Keen on quality skin, the licensed esthetician also uses CBD to reduce inflammation brought on by seborrheic dermatitis - a skin disease that causes red, itchy patches. When her seborrheic dermatitis acts up, so does her anxiety, exacerbating excoriation - a skin-picking disorder that affects approximately 1.4% of American adults, and is more common for women than men. “When it comes to skin care, I love using CBD,” she said, noting she rarely picks at her skin when she uses it. “Because of its [chemical properties] and the amount of fatty acids, CBD clears the area up really fast and doesn’t leave scarring, which is incredible. It’s beneficial to your skin in so many ways. It’s really helped with my recovery process.” Olivia was introduced to Cannabis at the age of 15 and began smoking flower to combat debilitating migraines. “When I was in CBD clears the area middle school, I really started to notice them,” up really fast and she recalled. “I’d go doesn’t leave scarring, down to the nurse’s which is incredible. I missed so much school, but luckily I was able to graduate.” Medical Cannabis has been able to put the kibosh on temporal-throbbing headaches, allowing Olivia to be much more productive, opening up time for providing waxes and facials for clientele, as well as dispensing patient advice through her social media channels. “They’re under control now,” she said. “I feel like I mainly use Cannabis for my depression and anxiety at this point. To have a migraine once a month is still a lot – they’re completely debilitating. I’ll be down for two or three days. But that’s much better than being down two to three days per week.” Olivia has also made a conscious effort to take what she sees as a healthier approach to medicating, switching from Cannabis flower to concentrates. “I’m mainly a dab person,” she said. “I don’t like the feeling that comes with the combustion of smoking flower. Unless I’m vaping, it feels a little too harsh. Concentrates are stronger and it’s just better medicine for me.” A proud owner of a Corgi and Golden Retriever, Olivia even provides CBD treats for her dogs when their anxiety runs high. “I really think everybody should use hemp or Cannabis,” she said. “My whole life, it’s been hard to figure out basic ways to calm down and gain back that self control. I think Cannabis is one of the healthier ways I’ve been able to do that – without taking a pill or grabbing a drink.”

As one of the greatest filmmakers of American cinema, director Robert Altman is responsible for the creation of such films as “M*A*S*H,” “Nashville,” “Short Cuts,” and “The Player.” In many ways, he was a sort of ‘outside artist’ in Hollywood – working with his trademark large ensemble casts and often utilizing unconventional methods for the direction of films. All of this contributed to Altman being beloved by many in the film business, making him a sort of ‘director’s director.’

A

LTMAN WAS UNAPOLOGETICALLY OUTSPOKEN about his

political views and various social causes. He was an anti-war activist (both about Vietnam and the invasion of Iraq in 2003), and he was an atheist who saw no issue in speaking out about his beliefs. Pertinent to this column, he was also a Cannabis enthusiast. Altman was one of the most high-ranking members of the NORML (National Organization for the Reformation of Marijuana Laws) board. During his storied career he discovered what most of us have learned already: Cannabis is safer than alcohol and better for creativity, saying, “I was a heavy drinker, but the alcohol affected my heart rather than my liver. So I stopped. I smoke grass now. I say that to everybody, because marijuana should be legalized. It’s ridiculous that it isn’t. If at the end of the day I feel like smoking a joint, I do it. It changes the perception of what I’ve been through all day.”

Indeed, Altman never shied away from his love for the herb. One of his first short films was “Pot Au Feu” (named for a French dinner of boiled meats and vegetables), which shows everyday French people doing everyday things – all while enjoying a joint. He produced the film in 1966 for less than $1,000, and today, you can watch it on YouTube. Then there’s the screenwriter Michael Tolkin who described working with Altman on the set of the 1992 film “The Player,” as a studio setting with a lot of Cannabis consumption happening. Altman was Not to mention the actor unapologetically Donald Sutherland thought that outspoken about the amount of smoke on the set of the film “M*A*S*H” was his political actually for special effects – the views and cause, it turned out, was the various social copious amounts of weed that causes. Altman was smoking on set. This list of stories goes on and on… Robert Altman was in many ways an outsider in Hollywood, as he often preferred to allow actors to improvise their roles, giving a looseness to his directorial style. He also created new ways to develop a certain sort of overt satire in his movies, provoking their staying power upon multiple viewings. While his films don’t necessarily follow the Hollywood ‘blockbuster’ style or script, he is often held in the same regard as directors like Martin Scorsese, David Lynch and Woody Allen. But it’s Altman’s success and his activism for Cannabis that truly paved the way for our current, more tolerant culture of consumption in the United States. And for that, we all owe Robert Altman a debt of gratitude.

SHOP REVIEW

EUPHORIA WELLNESS SETTING & VIBE The store is perfectly set up to educate patients as they walk through the product selection. The staff likes to help patients understand the processes their Cannabis goes through, helping them to feel more comfortable. Before COVID changed the way many dispensaries operate, there would be “nug jugs” with batches of flower in them allowing patients to see their medicine before purchasing. They also offer discounts, with tons of options for our disabled veterans.

FLOWER 22

With more than 50 different options, there is certainly a price point and quality product for anyone’s budget or medical needs. Flower is priced on tiers named value, silver, gold and platinum. With discounts coming in on a regular basis, you can easily slide out the door with an ounce for under $300.

CONCENTRATES As soon as you walk into the dispensary room, a wave of concentrates is staring you in the face. Several strains of rosin were available from 1937, and they even offer compassionate pricing on CBD RSO. The budtenders are fantastic at introducing new patients to concentrates and getting them started at the appropriate pace.

EDIBLES Candies, capsules, drinks, mints and even honeys can be found here. Many options are regularly stocked and available, as manager Tiea Findlay understands not all Cannabis patients can ingest their medicine in similar ways. Pretty much any edible you can imagine on the Maryland market can be found at Euphoria.

QUICK HIT Euphoria Wellness is a Maryland owned dispensary located in New Market – a town in Frederick County that bills itself as the “Antiques capital of Maryland.” The team here is creating a first class dispensary experience for patients both young and old. Walking in the front door really brought on an undeniable West Coast dispensary vibe. CBD products from local and national brands line the waiting room, as well as a few bongs, bowls and accessories.

BANANA

STRAIN OF THE MONTH

gr

RY own TH by M

THIS MONTH’S FEATU RED FLOWER HAILS FROM THE P RESTIGIOUS RYTHM LINE OF P REMIUM CANNABIS.

ATREEZ

Banana Treez is an absolutely delicious cultivar that brings a flavorful cascade of tropical fruit and piney evergreen together to create a creamy, minty aroma that carries well into the smoke. The nugs feature a gentle green coloration, with vibrant yellow and orange hairs giving the flower a tropical appearance. With island-y flavors to match, the creamy banana and sweet kiwi inhale is followed by a piney, honeysuckle exhale. The profile is a hybrid lover’s dream with a harmonious balance of heavy indica and airy sativa terpenes – producing one of the strongest and most stable highs on the market today! With .95% limonene, one would naturally assume an immediately uplifting, sativalike effect. However, the limonene is tempered by a healthy dose of myrcene, a touch of pinene, and rounded out by a caryophyllene/linalool tail. Indeed, this flower packs a mood elevating punch, but the uplifting qualities never reached a manic, TESTING racy place – as is often 31.03% thca common with large 2.94% total terps .95% limonene amounts of limonene .67% myrcene and pinene together. .37% pinene The myrcene offers .33% caryophyllene a strong presence that .13% linalool feels like an anchor preventing one from being lifted too far out of the stratosphere, while the caryophyllene/ linalool combo offers a soothing calm that keeps the heart rate mellow. Together these terps create a healthy and nearly even balance, manifesting a robust and powerful high that maintains an even keel as you navigate your day. Bonus points must be given for the fact that there is a true banana scent that carries into the flavor of the smoke. On top of that, there is a subtle woody/piney element that shines through as well, thus checking the boxes of both banana and treez. It’s rare to encounter a flower that smells and tastes like what it is named, but I wouldn’t expect anything but the best flower from Rythm – they have time and time again churned out some of Maryland’s tastiest floral treats and most effective herbal medicine.

A HYBRID LOVER’S DREAM WITH A HARMONIOUS BALANCE OF HEAVY INDICA AND AIRY SATIVA TERPENES.

MothershipGlass Water is known to be impacted by human intentions, thoughts and sounds. After many years of research, Japanese scientist Dr. Masaru Emoto has shown the world the powers of positive thinking and its immense impact on the water molecule – where his studies have concluded that our ideas and feelings have the magical power to alter the molecular structure of water. Much like water, there is a strong synergistic relationship between the incredible energy encapsulated within Mothership studios and the glass art that they produce.

Mothership Glass has risen to the top echelon of glassmakers in the world. Their remarkable and one-of-a-kind designs include the Klein, Ball Rig, Torus, Egg, Exosphere, BKT(Ball Rig/ Klein/Torus), and FKT(Fab/Klein/Torus). They are now applying their incredible skills to dry pipes, glassware and soon-to-be, home goods. This close-knit, family-owned, and operated business is home to 35+ employees, including Scott Deppe’s mother, Alisha, and four of his siblings named Eric, Travis, Katie, and Jayson. Each team member provides a diverse and unique skill set, which helps tie together the organic, symbiotic connection found at this otherworldly studio. Our team had the extraordinary opportunity to take a look behind the scenes and see the way Deppe and his team have taken the glass world that we once knew and flipped it upside down. Using wizard-like techniques, Deppe has reinvented the wheel when it comes to fuming with his breathtaking Hologram series. Keep a close eye on their Instagram page for all updates on future releases for your chance at grabbing one of their prized and sought-after works of art.

“Using wizard-like techniques, Deppe has reinvented the wheel when it comes to fuming with his breathtaking Hologram series.” Can you shed some light on how you brought a scientific approach to the glass pipe industry? How do you concoct some of these mind-melting designs? With the immense love for Cannabis and hash that I have, I am always searching for a better way to enjoy the two. I nerd out on things hard and am always trying to create a more enjoyable experience for myself. It’s a lot of experimenting – by seeing what’s out there in different facets of nature, engines and technology – amongst many other things. As water acts with a mind of its own and wants to do certain things, we incorporate its natural flow state into our pieces. Overall, this provides a very high-quality function and flow for our pipes. When coming up with concepts for the incredible Hologram series, where do you draw inspiration? Over the years, there have been many transformative universal messages that I have received. We are constantly searching for ways to tell folklore stories through our glass that have a deeper meaning. In collaboration with our in-house artist Max McNett and sandblast expert Erin Bohn, we work together to bring the industry some of the most innovative glass art imaginable. Our skilled and artistic staff often have very imaginative ideas that end up projected into concepts for a hologram series. The unique relationship shared between our artisan glass blowers helps us work together and generate an infinite amount of ideas. With our up-and-coming Catalyst series, we depicted the classic Stoned Ape theory. This thesis touches on monkeys eating mushrooms in the savannah, where they furthered the evolutionary process by altering their prefrontal cortex. Our Strange Deities, like our other series, are heavily influenced by space-like objects, as well as crop circles. I see that your company is experimenting with glassware and laser-etching of wood. What new expansions do you see Mothership Glass expanding into in the future? We will be getting into some home decor, including intricate coffee tables and chandeliers that will tie together your sophisticated sesh table and connoisseur ambiance. One day, we hope to have the rooms in your house decked out with an enlightened style, matched by the works of art that we offer.

TINY WORLD PENDANTS

Jerrad Santmyer, aka GlassKid, has been crushing the game with his miniature glass items – from bowls the size of a grain of rice to nature-scene-in-abottle pendants, including mushrooms, slugs and crystals throughout a vast and detailed forest.

Jerrad attended Salem Community College with a focus on glass art, working among some truly inspiring classmates in a massive studio. He draws inspiration from his childhood, where he had a passion for collecting miniature items. Jerrad noticed that people had a strong appreciation for miniature glass objects and wanted to fill that niche. Instead of going for his usual forte of making large pipes, he decided to make a tiny one instead. The rest is history. @GLASSKID

KGB Glass Brian Owoc moved to Portland, Maine in 1998 and was staying at a YMCA when he got his first job working the night shift at Dunkin’ Donuts. He really

enjoyed making them, because “donuts make people happy.” During this time, he decided to rent out a section of his garage so that his friend could build a small glass studio, with the promise that the friend would teach him to blow glass.

It wasn’t long before he started to get the hang of it and decided to try and make his first Donut Bowl. While selling his pieces of glass to local headshops, he met his girlfriend Sarah Marblesbee, who was working as a manager at one of the stores. That was 10 years ago. They now share a studio in Portland where she also blows her own glass pipes, as well as adding her business degree and background to his creativity and workaholic style. Some glass artists teased him about making Donut Bowls, but that didn’t stop Brian. Now his Donut glass pipes, rigs and pendants are collected and sold throughout the world. Some people have accumulated more than 100 of his pieces!

PAINKILLER XL CBD CBD RSO is an extraordinarily effective medicinal product for all types of symptoms, and gLeaf Medical’s Painkiller XL CBD RSO is a top notch version of its healing powers. THIS EDIBLE OIL is a concentrated crude extract that offers a depth of healing relief unparalleled in the medical Cannabis world. Incorporating every aspect of the plant, RSO provides a robust, full-bodied, healing aura that touches the hardest symptoms patients deal with. Given that RSO is meant to be taken orally and not dabbed, most of the quality points you see in a traditional dab extract don’t matter. Additionally, I would never say that RSO tastes good, but again, that is hardly the point. What I will say is the dark, phyto-rich material produces robust medicinal benefits across the board. I decided to try to use this product for a sleep experiment and ate about half a syringe a few hours before bedtime. This is my personal dosage level and I encourage everyone to dose themselves based on their own structured self experimentation and personal bodily reactions.

I noted the spicy and oily plant taste that comes with RSO, and found it pretty comparable to a THC RSO flavor-wise. About an hour went by and I had almost forgotten I had taken it, when suddenly my body felt loose... I was lying on my couch, dissociating into the TV when my muscles noticeably exhaled and melted into the cushions. The looseness of my typically arthritic joints was everything that I had come to love from my RSO regimen, but now, there was no high. Perhaps I felt slightly more cloudy, but that was in a drowsy, ‘time for bed’ sense - not in an ‘alternative state of consciousness’ sense. My body entered a state of boisterous tranquility and all my screaming neurons quieted, bringing a lightness to my body that definitely got me comfortable enough to fall asleep. As I continued my TV watching, fully melted into the couch and supremely comfortable, I decided I would pack myself a bowl and head up to bed. I kid you not, I took one small bong rip - the babiest of hits - and fell asleep within five minutes. The build-up of CBD in my system was instantly receptive to the tiniest of THC doses and I was asleep, right there on the couch, never making it up to my bed. I cannot express in words how exquisite my sleep was. For all intents and purposes, this was a medicated coma. A completely dreamless, full-bodied, deep and restful, full night of sleep. I woke up, still loose and pain free, without a touch of grogginess and marveling that I didn’t make it to my bed. This was an amazing experience and I want to thank gLeaf Medical for producing their Painkiller XL CBD RSO! They provided me with one of my best night’s sleep in recent memory.

2 tablespoons olive oil 4 teaspoons canna-olive oil 2 ounces pancetta, cut in small pieces 2 garlic cloves, finely chopped 3 eggs ½ cup grated parmesan 1 pound spaghetti salt / black pepper parmesan, garnish

1. In a large sauté pan heat the oils over medium-low heat. Add the pancetta and cook for 2-3 minutes. Add the garlic and sauté for 1 minute. 2. In a medium bowl whisk the eggs with the parmesan, stirring well to remove any lumps. 3. Bring a large pot of water to a boil and cook the pasta according to the directions on the package. The pasta needs to be hot for this dish to be successful.4. Drain the pasta and add to the pan with the pancetta and oil. 5. Remove the pan from the heat and add the egg mixture to the pasta. Whisk fast, as you do not want the eggs to scramble, just coat the strands of spaghetti. 6. Season with salt and pepper, sprinkle with parmesan and eat immediately.

American Pipe Dreams When it comes to glass smokeware, it doesn’t get much more old school than Jerome Baker Designs. JBD helped to establish the modern glass industry and became the largest bong producer in the world … that is, until Operation Pipe Dreams caused the company to go up in smoke. Now, nearly 20 years later, they’ve risen from the ashes to reclaim their place of prominence in the glass game. PYREX PIONEERS The Jerome Baker story begins, unsurprisingly, in the parking lot of a Dead show in Massachusetts in July 1989. It was there that a college student from Miami named Jason Harris met a hippie pipe maker from Eugene, Oregon named Bob Snodgrass. Known as the Godfather of Glass, Snodgrass invented two groundbreaking glassblowing techniques: fuming (aka color-changing glass) and the “pushed-in bowl.” His individualism and ingenuity would inspire and influence all those to follow.

apr. 2021

Jerome Baker Designs

“There was just some magical attraction to Bob—he’s just that kind of being,” Harris says. “He was the coolest dude I’d ever met. I just wanted to be like him instantly.” After graduating in 1991, Harris enrolled in the art program at the University of Oregon, moved out to Eugene and reached out to Snodgrass. In the months that followed, Harris saved his money, bought a torch, and began studying under Snodgrass as one of only 10 apprentices. “There was an energy in the air surrounding that scene at the time,” he recalls fondly. “It was magical.” In 1993, Harris and fellow apprentice Chris Shave (founder of Jah Creations Glass) started working together—first in a small garage down the street from Snodgrass, then in a larger studio with another fellow student, Dan K. It was Dan who introduced the group to the big Carlisle CC Burner torch and heavy wall glass, as well as the “wrap and rake” technique—all of which were game-changers for the budding industry. Harris and Shave sold their pipes on the Dead tour, as well as at headshops in New York. To set himself apart and earn more money, Harris began making bongs rather than pipes—a technique he learned from Snoddy’s top student, Cameron Tower. He also took advantage of his mom’s flight attendant privileges to fly around the world and study glass art—working at glass shops in Italy, Germany, and even as far as India.

Then in 1995, he and partner Jordan Schefter formed their own company, which Harris decided to call Jerome Baker Designs—“Jerome,” an homage to Jerry Garcia who had recently died, and “Baker,” as in someone who gets “baked.” “I wanted to have a brand name that everybody could get behind—something besides just my own name.” One of JBD’s trademark styles was the Mothership—an orb-like base with a long shaft and a “snap and pull” downstem (a flared tube with a rubber seal that you pull out to carb)—an idea they borrowed from the Graffix bongs of the time. Unlike heady pieces, in which individual artists create unique works of art, JBD focused on production pieces, with various artists in their shop crafting different components and combining them in assembly-line fashion. This proved highly successful: By 1999, they’d become the largest smokeware company in the world—employing 70 glassblowers and earning $4 million a year.

true and I can admit it. I do it a lot. I mean, not out loud so much … well OK, out loud. But at least I’m hyperconscious about maintaining the flailing arms to conceal any evidence of my attempt to reign victorious in the current internal debate. But doesn’t everyone respond to those nagging inner voices with some form of discourse? I mean, it is part of being human to socially interact whether it is with a person, a pet, or a volleyball with palm shoots for hair named Hanes. Wait, what I meant was Wilson. Hanes was his other friend. And by nagging, I mean it never stops. The conjecture feels like a perpetual flow, with the impatient expectation of logical responses. Because if you’re a critical thinker or even someone who questions the meaning of your existence, you’re hardwired to answer reasonable inquiries – whether or not they’re self-provoked. You can only ignore yourself for so long. They say that there are three necessities in life to survive: food, water and companionship. And in these times of fewer and fewer options for companions, sometimes you’ve got to turn to yourself for a good chat. And I’m my own bestie – especially on those Saturday mornings that begin with a dab of Green Queen and a cup of coffee. Bam! Me, Myself and Irene are off to a roaring start, gossiping it up while the eggs get fried, the lawn gets mowed, and the Stoney Baloney gets wrote. First, there’s the voice who offers advice, then the one who loves to criticize, followed by the one who offers condolence, etc. Of course, as I continue to work on the royal “we” through self-care, the rebuts are often careful considerations for the emotional, sensitive myself. Except for the times when I feel like being a brat. But let’s not bring him into it. Hey, I’ve gotta go. I’m receiving a butt dial from me.
