editor’s note Thank you for checking out the 52nd issue of northwest leaf! A custom glass piece was created for our cover by the talented crew at The Hollow

I

love Halloween, especially when there are good meds and friends, and I hope you share both this month as we head into the rainy season. This month’s cover art was produced by Sean and Erika Witschger of The Hollow, a custom glass shop in the Renton landing area. They’ve never ceased to produce amazing work, and this cover is no exception. Check out their work at www.thehollow.me or facebook.com/CustomGlassByTheHollow for even more sick art! This month also features some other sweet glass from Silika Tacoma glass shop and the Creep “Creatures of the North” gallery. Creep is a very talented lampworker from Eastern Washington, and he brought his style to Tacoma in dozens of custom collaborations with artists from around the sound. We also feature one of my favorite annual events, the Boro Derby at 7 Point Studios. Artists make custom glass derby race cars,

and then send them flying down a custom track in a hunt for glory, and hopefully not a pile of broken glass. If you missed it, check out our Facebook page and stop by 7 Point in November for over a week of custom glass art in the Pipe Masters Collab, which NW Leaf sponsored. Our issue this month is so packed with other content I’m going to have to work quickly to fit it all in. Check out Dr. Rose’s article on how to beat the cold season and boost your immune system, see Dr. Scanderson’s sweet new behind the strain and a growtech guide to cooling your garden. We also cover the first annual growers’ cup, where entrants grew the same strain to see whose methodology produces the best flower in the state! We have a sweet travel story from Bonnie Fong, who explored Spain and the best Cannabis it had to offer. As always thanks for reading, and for all you outdoor growers keep those plants dry!

Drug War

Bill would stop militarizing of country’s cops No more tanks, no more grenades, drones...

U.S.

Representatives Hank Johnson (D-Georgia) and Raul Labrador (R-Idaho) introduced legislation Sept. 16 to change the Pentagon program that transfers military equipment to law enforcement. The program has come under increased scrutiny from lawmakers after images from Ferguson, Missouri, showed law enforcement dressed like combat soldiers, using military equipment to deal with protesters. The Pentagon program has its roots in the Drug War, coming to fruition in the early 1990s as the U.S. government militarized its approach to drug policy. In September, senators had a hearing on the issue of militarization in our law enforcement, where they were critical of the Pentagon program. Johnson and Labrador’s bill, the Stop Militarizing Law Enforcement Act, has received support from Democratic and GOP legislators. “In light of what we all saw in Ferguson, Missouri, the American people are clamoring for law enforcement to become less militarized,” said Michael Collins, policy manager at the Drug Policy Alliance’s Office of National Affairs. “Grenades, drones and tanks may belong on the battlefield; they....don’t have a place on U.S. streets. “Such militarization is inextricably linked to the Drug War, where SWAT teams and no-knock raids have become a routine part of drug arrests, even in the case of nonviolent offenders,” Collins said. “Very occasionally and with proper oversight and training, the use of some military equipment is appropriate — school shootings, terrorist situations and the like,” said Major Neill Franklin, executive director of Law Enforcement Against Prohibition. “But when it’s routinely used against nonviolent drug offenders, it only serves to further strain police-community relations so vital to preventing and solving violent crime. “This bill will correct some of the worst excesses of a potentially useful program hijacked by the war on drugs,” said Franklin, a retired police officer.

MMJ dispensary forced to pay hefty fines as the Health Authority gets serious on violations.

Oregon

P

ortland Compassionate Caregivers paid $6,500 in fines for evidence of 13 “serious” violations, including poor record keeping and evidence on-site Cannabis consumption, according to authorities. After a series of stern warnings to numerous dispensaries earlier in September, the Oregon Health Authority began charging medical marijuana dispensaries for violating the rules. The shop was the first to be cited for violations during an unannounced, mandatory annual onsite inspection. OHA’s regulations to enforce the state’s 2013 medical marijuana dispensary law require an onsite inspection of each facility within six months of receiving a license, and annually thereafter. The state subsequently ordered Portland Compassionate Caregivers to close, The Oregonian’s Noelle Crombie reported last month. “This penalty sends a message in no uncertain terms — you must comply with Oregon law or you will pay the price,” said Tom Burns, director of Oregon Health Authority Pharmacy Programs.

undreds of people filtered in and out of the professional event, getting a first-hand look at many of the Oregon Medical Marijuana Program community’s top extractors, dispensaries, products and business owners. The convention, free to the public with a suggested donation of one can of food, filled half of Hall E at the Portland Expo Center last month. The event raised more than two and a half tons in food donations for the Oregon Food Bank, a figure that Event Director Jerry Norton said he hopes and expects to more than double at next year’s event. “An event like this is important because it allows the community to come together and exchange ideas,” Erin Wallace of Sirius Extracts said.

By WILL FERGUSON for NORTHWEST LEAF | PHOTO by CARL KIILSGAARD for NORTHWEST LEAF Clima Grow, Mt. Hood Wellness, Divine Kind and High Quality Compassion were a few of the vendor booths present at the convention. One booth that drew a lot of attention during the weekend was the Stoney Girl Garden’s booth. Stoney Girl was offering seeds of its genetics, which are specially bred for RSO (Rick Simpson Oil) production. Attendees were eager to learn more about the medicinal benefits of RSO and the terminally ill cancer patients it has helped in countless well-documented cases. A few steps away, the Divine Kind and Dab Society Extracts booths drew a crowd. Dab Society Extracts was educating attendees on its safe and clean BHO (butane hash oil) extraction

methods. Many people noted that they were intrigued to learn how a compliant extractor operates their business. Having a positive and friendly medical Cannabis event that is open to the public is a crucial step towards ending prohibition. “It is important we let the community and state take a look at medical marijuana before November,” attendee Nikolai Alfieri said. Ultimately, the Oregon Cannabis Convention was nothing short of a reflection of the compassion and care evident in our cannacommunity.

NATIONAL NEWS The Human Solution is officially a nonprofit 501(c)3 civil rights group. As our group has become official, we are proud of all of our board of directors, national leaders, executive board of directors and all of our members, chapter coordinators and volunteers. We are working hard because across our nation we have more defendants turning into prisoners. Last month, Raymond Nunez and Keith Morton were found guilty in California. While we call it legal in two states, we still have almost 50 prisoners serving life sentences. It is an emergency that we end the war. The most important thing about ending prohibition is saying “not guilty.” You cannot be punished for your verdict, and jurors have a real duty to nullify bad laws. The Human Solution International and FIJA teamed up and educated towns across the country about jurors’ rights on Jury Rights Day, September 5. To learn more about jury nullification, go to fija.org. To hear more news from the front lines, including live calls from Craig Cesal (serving life in prison for our plant) go to blogtalkradio.com/papsite-radio. To start a chapter, adopt a prisoner, join or make a donation, go to thsintl.org. No one deserves to go to prison or die for our plant. No victim = no crime = not guilty.

Organizer Paul Stanford promised the event would be the only pot-free place in all of Portland that day and he wasn’t wrong. Police officers and anxious security guards searched every person going in or out of the park for anything even close to resembling pot or paraphernalia — going so far as to kick attendees out for using e-cigs. The city’s unreasonably stern crackdown on public consumption of pot is a strong contrast to its support for the Oktoberfest celebration that will occur soon in that very same park, where debauchery and fights will likely occur.

BORO DERBY 2014 An epic weekend of glassblowing and derby car racing...for charity!

R

acing glass pipes and bongs down a 50foot plastic pine car derby track wouldn’t appear to be a smart idea, but when The Evergreen State Project puts on the Boro Derby, the best glass blowers from Washington get together to create some truly beautiful, functional and, yes, track-ready pieces for a great cause. Boro Derby is the brainchild of Brandon Welk who started the event in 2012 to unite glass artists and community members to help children in need. Artists get a kit on Saturday and begin constructing their derby cars. The cars are then treated in a kiln overnight and raced on Sunday. Beneficiaries of the event are the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, Agape Home Women and Children’s Shelter, and Vanessa Behan Crisis Nursery. With a picture-perfect This year’s race Seattle fall weekend, winner was J-Red this year’s Boro with an awesome Derby couldn’t have skateboarding turned out better. The eyeball monster. event was at 7 Points Studios in downtown Seattle and a thick, red carpet ran down the middle of the building with a bright yellow 44-foot-long racing track ready to handle some amazing glass derby pipe cars. Live music throughout the weekend kept the people grooving, and vendors had plenty of glass, accessories and clothing, and they kept their e-nails hot and ready for dabs. But the most exciting part was to see some of the world’s finest glassblowing artists give live demonstrations. The racing categories were split between artists who could assemble their kits on site and those who mailed their entry in. This year’s race winner was J-Red with an awesome skateboarding eyeball monster and was followed by Inkz with a hot-looking hot rod. Boro Derby was a fantastic event where the community came together for a fine time and cause. If you were unable to check out this year’s event, mark your calendar for next year because you won’t want to miss it.

8 Questions for the politician Gary Johnson

on how local growers must consider global pot use By TYLER J. MARKWART for NORTHWEST LEAF

30/oct. 2014 FACEBOOK.COM/NWLEAF

‘‘

IT COULD HAPPEN TOMORROW AND OBAMA COULD ORDER IT HAPPENING TOMORROW. MY UNDERSTANDING IS THE SURGEON GENERAL DOES THIS WITH THE STROKE OF A PEN.

#1 Welcome to the Pacific Northwest. How are things going for you in your new role in hawaii?

#5 What are you thoughts on the possibility of the federal government rescheduling Cannabis soon?

It is awesome. I’m the president of Hi! (laughing) Just bottom line, it’s fun to be at the tip of the spear and really more than anything being here in Washington state … You guys have paved the way for me to be able to do this. So I thank all of you. You know something that is going unrecorded and really kind of under the radar is the fact that thousands of American cities are voting to decriminalize pot in their own town, they are trying to take the initiative in their own hands.

There is no reason to believe that it’s going to happen. No reason. But could it happen? It could happen tomorrow and Obama could order it happening tomorrow. My understanding is that the surgeon general does this with the stroke of a pen and that the surgeon general is an employee of President Obama.

#2 You’re an enthusiast for well-being and a healthful life. Are Hi’s products targeting medical, recreational or both markets?

It seems as though everybody — because they’ve smoked pot — they now know how to make money in pot. This is the separation process right now, it’s determining those who can actually do this from those who think they can. This gives me a great forum to continue to be a spokesperson for all those issues that don’t have anything to do with Hi as a company but have to do with the industry itself. Should the government be mandating that each dose be 10 mg? No, the government shouldn’t. Will Hi do that regardless or not if the government says that or not? Yes! Because it’s responsible.

What we want to do on the medical side is we want to be able to put our little Hi logo on your medicine. We’re not going to charge you a thing for doing that, but what we are going to do is we’re going to have a lot of merchandising revenue that comes with this cool T-shirt. All the proceeds from merchandising will go to medical … All of that “profit” will go to provide free medicine to patients. We want to support you as a medical grower in Washington state. Now, where we make our money is in the recreational side.

#3 How will the recreational side of production and sales work to best provide for the free medical production? We want to attach ourselves to your best edible products. We’re going to determine that being a partner with you and we’re going to have the best products in the products and that goes all the way from the pot to any sort of the ingredients that are used in it. So, it’s the best of the best. We’re going to charge a very small commission for every unit sold, but we want a piece of that. What we offer you (the producer/processor) by doing that is you get the Hi logo as your branding. What you get is marketing that I’m going to say will survive 150 years from now. What we offer the grower in Washington state is if your product is the best of the best, that we determine, then this goes in our recipe book that we pass onto our newest manufacturer and distributor in Hong Kong. Because we have done that now, 18 years from now you might get several hundreds of thousands of dollars a month in commission check because that’s how you go worldwide.

#4 Is there any talk of professional sports leagues adopting proCannabis policies so that Hi can market their products and players can consume them when they are available in those legal states? I heard this secondhand, but I heard that the NFL Players Association came out just within the last couple of days and said that they (the players) want to be authorized to use medical marijuana for what ails them. Point is and we all know this, they are doing it already but now let’s get it out in the open, especially with the head injuries and suspensions. It’s all really positive.

#6 What are the hurdles for the industry moving forward?

#7 What drew you to working with hi, why them, why now? Well, I was given the opportunity and I really do believe in the team that we’ve assembled. We are publicly traded and we have a market cap of $110 million. Well what justifies that? If everything that I am saying happens, we are grossly undervalued. Now I want to stress that’s what a lot of companies right now are saying that this huge potential lurks out there and I am saying the same thing. I believe that or I wouldn’t be doing this.

#8 Where do you see Hi 10 years from now? We are looking to firmly establish a relationship here in Washington, which really looks promising and we’re going to in fact do that. For us, the immediacy is Washington state and Colorado, actually getting product on the shelf and starting this branding. I do believe that 150 years from now that this logo will survive. I’m predicting that maybe in 12 years this will be on the hood of a NASCAR race car like Coca-Cola. I hope to fulfill the role as leading lobbyist and be the face of the industry.

Gary Johnson is the former governor of New Mexico and the 2012

presidential candidate for the Libertarian Party. He has said that if he won the presidency he would remove marijuana from the controlled substances list and pardon non-violent marijuana offenders. Today he is the CEO of Hi! — a recreational Cannabis processing company that is also working to help medical patients access their medicine at an affordable cost.

HIGH TIMES This year’s circus was hailed as being in Seattle but actually went down at Comcast Arena in Everett — that meant a change of venue from the intimacy of Fremont to several sprawling blocks in downtown Everett. Attendees had the option of visiting different distinct zones, some for vending, others for medicating and others with access to the arena. Vendors noted high prices for the booth spaces. Security and local law enforcement kept a watchful eye as plenty of free joints were tossed from loud stages and calls to try this or test that rang out all day long. A heartfelt set by The Wailers covering all of Bob Marley’s Legends album was a wonderful way to start off one more of summer’s memorable final weekends. ‘Til next year! Full results

O

ver the last fifteen years of blowing glass I’ve made thousands of pumpkins, but exclusively in a hotshop environment which never lent itself very well to the kind of detail I love to do in my work. Lampworking and making pipes in this new era of legalization turned something I’ve always wanted to do into a reality. I was finally able to combine my love for the detail in my drawings with the raw form of glass! This piece started as a rough sketch that just flowed onto the paper from all of those times I’ve wanted to put just a little something extra into my pumpkins. The concept has been floating around in my mind for years, just waiting for my skills and the market to catch up with my ideas.

SNAPPING OPEN A NUG IS LIKE PEELING A FRESH PIECE FRUIT, BUT WITH STICKY TRICHOMES GRABBING YOUR FINGERTIPS

There is a reason Phenotype Farmers took first prize in the Indica portion of the High Times Cannabis Cup last month... They know how to make awesome strains. Their Tangie is one great tasting and smelling flower! Phenotype Farmer’s all-organic cultivation brings out the best in the strain, preserving the true tangerine taste without any harshness from chemical nutrients. Snapping open a nug is like peeling open a fresh piece of fruit, with sticky trichomes grabbing at your fingertips. When the flame hits the flower it instantly hits with a heady clean smoke that leaves a clean white ash, and there is very little cough or bite to the smoke. The vapors are tasty, sending heavy indica signals to the brain and body. We found this strain very relaxing and euphoric, great for the end of a long day or to chase away the blues. This strain is known to be a creeper, so expect the full intensity of the flower to hit after 15 to 20 minutes. Of course, we recommend spending that time enjoying another bowl of this tasty flower.

EURO TRIP PRIVATE CLUBS, CRAZY RULES AND POLICE WHO SWOOP IN QUICKLY — FINDING CANNABIS IN SPAIN WAS UNLIKE ANY ADVENTURE I EXPERIENCED BEFORE IN EUROPE.

TRAVELING IS A POLITICAL ACT. IT EXPOSES ME TO NEW ENVIRONMENTS, PEOPLE AND CUSTOMS, AND HELPS ME BETTER UNDERSTAND WHY CULTURAL DIFFERENCES OCCUR AND THEIR IMPACT.

isiting for an academic purpose increases its value because I go for an extended time and I always have resources should issues arise. When I studied in Rome during my junior year of college, I considered it the most rewarding experience of my life. So when I discovered that my law school offered a program in Madrid, I took advantage. I attended the orientation with excitement and nervousness. I knew no one in the program and did not want to find housing alone. So when the director gave us the obligatory safety speech on traveling smart, I was delighted when she told us to research the drug laws in Europe, but to note that similar to Washington, marijuana was legal in Spain. I knew she was mistaken; marijuana is decriminalized in Spain, not legal. There’s a huge difference. But I appreciated the law professor’s realistic approach to her program’s drug policy. I found two great girls to live with in Madrid named Shreya and Juju. We had tons in common. We were all in our mid-20s, minorities, loved to travel and were about to start our third year of law school. Soon after we booked an apartment, we made plans to go to Lisbon for a weekend. We also signed up to attend a trip through the school to Segovia, a historic city just outside of Madrid. I booked my ticket to Madrid, which included a 19-hour layover in Rome for my return flight. I was already having a great trip, and I hadn’t even left yet.

MADRID I landed in Madrid at 10 a.m. and promptly rushed off the plane in search of the metro station connected to the aeroporto. I paid for a ticket and hopped on the Hanging out linea 8 to connect to the linin the Gothic ea 4 to my friend’s apartment. an cities I have visited, was stunning. Here though, the roads were made of cobblestone, not pavement. The streets were labeled on the sides of buildings, not on sign posts. And I almost got hit by a scooter, not an SUV. I had arrived in the middle of a European metropolis and was delighted to be there. My new roommates Shreya, Juju and I settled into our apartment that night and decided to go out for a late night drink, Madrid-style. We had heard locals liked to start late in the evening. That was an understatement. We walked onto the street around midnight and the small streets were filled with people hopping from bar to bar. Children joined their parents at the restaurants and played with each other in the streets and plazas. I walked by a jungle gym in a plaza about 1 a.m. and a dozen or so children were playing in the plaza. We turned a corner into a plaza and a hundred or so young people were sitting on the ground, drinking beer and smoking. Everyone was in little circles talking and laughing with their friends as street vendors walked around with six-packs of beer for sale. Realizing that this plaza party was better and cheaper than any bar, we all exchanged a euro for a tall boy and sat in the middle of the circle to drink.

We began walking bar to bar, hoping and waiting for someone to approach. It wasn’t long before a young man with a backpack walked by us and asked for some rolling papers.

into the apartment, then walked around the narrow streets in search of dinner. A small restaurant lured us in by the sounds of a man singing a wailing song that sounded like a Portuguese opera. The performance was called a “fado,” or a Portuguese music genre known for its melancholic playing of the mandolin and guitar. The five-course dinner that this particular restaurant was serving came with a free fado. The four of us sat down to enjoy the feast of caldo verde (spinach soup), ensalada de pulpo (octopus salad), bacalhau à bras (a fish and potato dish), linguiça (smoke cured pork sausage) and crème brulee. It was the best food we had during our entire trip. We swayed to the live music as we breezed through bottles of wine. The singers sung of poverty and lost loves. Their experiences were so sad that I almost felt badly for truly enjoying the music. By day, Lisbon was more beautiful than any of us

could imagine. In contrast to the flat inland city of Madrid, Lisbon was surrounded by water and a bevy of picturesque hills. Just outside of our living room window, vibrant red-roofed houses lined the roads toward the sparkling Tagus River. We ventured into the city and started to climb. The views from these peaks were breath-taking. I could see the long streets of the downtown area built of artistic stones and tiles. We could see the yellow funiculars, or trains, carrying people up and down the hills. And as I looked over the houses and into the sea, I discovered Lisbon’s Golden Gate Bridge replica — the Ponte 25 de Abril. The bridge looked exactly like its San Francisco equivalent, but without the City by the Bay behind it. In that moment, I felt so close to my hometown, yet so homesick at the same time. As soon as we returned to Madrid, we had a bullfight to attend. Many classmates were surprised and a little disgusted at the idea of attending a bullfight. Bullfighting has been discontinued in all but a few countries, and Spain is one of the last countries to carry on the tradition. I secured some tickets, reasoning that it’s a cultural tradition and it might not be around much longer. The travel books and online reviews said the bullfights were not for the squeamish — and they were right. The show lasted about an hour, featuring a new bull every 10 minutes. The matadors were fearless in both their courage and fashion. Each round started with the expected teasing of the bull with a bright pink or red cape. Next, the matadors stabbed the bulls in the neck with banderillas, or little flags, to further bleed and tire the bull. At the end of each round, one of the matadors stabbed the bull in the neck and the bull was left to die in its own pool of blood. The crowd cheered with excitement as four horses came out to carry the bull by its horns out of the area. Afterward, workers came out and swept the blood to prepare for the next bull.

BARCELONA Jackie asked me to go with her to Barcelona for two nights after classes ended. I hadn’t planned to go to Barcelona, but I bought a roundtrip ticket for 100 euros and was thrilled to go. I knew that Barcelona had some form of dispensary in which citizens could buy Cannabis, so I did a little digging.

TOKE TRIP TIPS Pack one Clif bar (or trail mix) for every day you’re gone. You’re bound to get hungry while traveling and it’s not always easy to find food. Bring at least $100 of local currency with you for arrival. Airports make money by ripping you off and it’s stressful to not have money with you. Do not alter your flight itinerary during your trip. You can add round trips, but to alter your ticket will cost nearly as much as the original price. Alert credit card companies of your travels via email and telephone. I did only by email and they still froze my accounts. Notify your cellphone company of your travels and discuss your international phone fees. I elected to turn my phone off to avoid hefty charges, but I had to do it in a particular way. Invest in a phone battery case. I only used my phone for the Internet and camera, and I still needed my charging case almost every day. Pack as few shoes as possible. They are awkward to fit in a suitcase. Bring at least one pair of reliably comfortable shoes. And skip the heels — platforms are just as nice and won’t get stuck in cobblestones or grates. Try a collapsible water bottle instead of a bulky Nalgene. Buy maps and travel guides at home before you leave. Finding maps and guides in English abroad is difficult or impossible. Be flexible. Traveling is full of surprises, disappointments and additional expenses. Don’t let them get you down.

me a series of questions that Russ had prepared me for. Yes, I live in Barcelona. Yes, I have my passport. Yes, I know Russ. Vanessa proceeded to lay out the rules. I am joining a private club where I can access Cannabis through participation of community gardens. I cannot “buy” Cannabis, I am only to “get” or “procure” Cannabis in the club. I must set a limit of how much Cannabis I can get in a given month. I must put my Cannabis in my underwear as I leave. Vanessa informed me that the police can search everything of mine except my underwear. She said if I was caught with Cannabis in my underwear, La Mesa would provide legal assistance for my case. However, if I was caught with Cannabis not in my underwear, I was responsible for my own legal needs. Vanessa also mentioned that inside of the club I could procure Cannabis and alcoholic beverages. However, it was my responsibility to not consume

too much. The contracts were in Spanish and I understood none of it, signing quickly. My contracts professor would shake his head in disgust. As soon as I walked into the club, the Cannabis counter was in front of me. A tall woman with a confident and friendly demeanor said she could help me. She had a kind and warm smile like a Jamaican mother, eager to please. She directed me to the menu of Cannabis products they carried. The six strains ranged from 7 to 12 euros and were described only with an I or an S, indicating its indica or sativa dominance. I picked the most expensive strain, Amnesia Haze, and the cheapest strain, White Rhino. The most expensive was coincidentally one of my favorites. The budtender weighed out 1 gram of each, wrapped it in king-size rolling papers and stuffed them into a clear plastic bag for me. She handed me a small water pipe and sent me to the lounge area. The lounge area had a dining table with Wi-Fi and outlets available, coffee tables surrounded by leather couches and a projector with a movie playing in front of a circle of velvet couches. The whole club was illuminated with stylish red lamps, which added to its swanky appeal. I turned the corner of the lounge and a small bar with seating was available. Excited to see alcohol and Cannabis served side by side, I ordered a glass of cava and sat on one of the couches. As I rolled a joint, I looked around and noticed how peaceful the club was. An older gentleman sat next to me reading a book while smoking a joint and a couple sat on the couch across from me, affectionately sharing a volcano bag. A group of young women sat around the bar, smoking joints and talking about their dating life. And two young men sat at a table behind me, laughing at each other’s stories while sharing a bowl. I smoked my joint as I read a book and drank my cava. I left shortly afterward (with my Cannabis in my underwear per the rules) to explore Barcelona for the afternoon. I saw all of Barcelona’s historic Gothic architecture and famous beaches. The city was much more impressive than Madrid; the food was better, the city was brighter, and there was so much more to see. After dinner and bar-hopping with Jackie and

Amir, I realized that there was only one thing I wanted to do on my last night in Barcelona: to return to La Mesa for some oil. La Mesa was different in the evening. Many more people were drinking and the crowd was noticeably more energetic and loud. I went up to the Cannabis counter and asked whether they had some oil. The same budtender from earlier in the day showed me some topical oil they had in stock. “No.” I said. “I meant the kind of oil you can smoke.” She replied with a sigh and said, “Look, we don’t have that kind of oil.” I was a little shocked, considering its popularity in the states. But eager to get a quick smoke in before I returned to the bars, I asked to look at their hash. She pulled out a Tupperware container. “We have some very nice hash made from CO2,” she said opening the container, revealing at least 20 grams of CO2 oil neatly weighed out in little sticks the size of toothpicks. She held it up to the light and showed me how clear it was and said that if I was a heavy smoker, this would be ideal for me. I asked her to give me a 5 euro piece, which ended up being a sizable half of a toothpick. She handed me a bong with a titanium nail and torch, which apparently hadn’t been used in a while and required a refill and tune-up. After I got settled on one of the vacant couches, I dabbed the oil until there was none left. The oil was smoother than any CO2 oil I’ve had in the U.S. The flavor wasn’t too present, but I was happy with the hybrid high I obtained from the smoke. The toothpick shape of oil was nice because it made it easy to break off and handle. When I was finished, I returned the rig and set out for my final night in Barcelona.

ROME After I left Barcelona, I had an overnight layover in Rome before returning to Seattle. That meant about 19 hours in Rome, and I wanted to see all of my favorite places I remembered from my study abroad in college. After settling into my hotel, I hopped on the 40 bus and rode it until I saw la Pi-

azza de fiori, where my old college apartment was. I got gelato and espresso and watched the daily market wrap up for the afternoon. All of the Italian I learned in school came rushing back as I listened to the conversations in the piazza. I walked around the city to all of my favorite places: Piazza Navona, the Pantheon, the Trevi fountain, the Spanish steps. I finally ended up at a small Italian restaurant for my last meal in Europe. As I ate my dinner of pasta del vongole and sipped my red wine and house-made limoncello, I reflected on the trip and how much I had seen in 18 days. I was so content with the educational adventure I had just experienced and so sad that it had come to an end.

seattle When my flight arrived back home, I promptly returned to work at 9 a.m. the next morning. Afterward, I decided to head out with my roommate to fight the jet lag with some fun. As we talked about the past few weeks of our lives, we walked around Green Lake and soaked up the sun and beauty of the Seattle summer day. I stopped feeling sad that I was no longer on vacation because the view of Seattle was more beautiful than anything I had seen in Europe. And in that moment it hit me. I came to the realization that vacation is not a destination, it’s a state of mind.

CANNA APPLE, PEAR AND WALNUT SALAD Being a right coast transplant, I am delighted by the variety and quality of fruit here in the paradise that is the Pacific Northwest. I taste every variety I can until I think I will never eat another apple or pear again. I bake lots of apple and pear tarts and even more crisps and crumbles. I bake them, grill them, sauté them and totally enjoy them. Pick up a jar of the local Bliss Peanut Butter, and eat it with an apple or pear slice. So yummy. I have made all of these recipes with the strain NYC Haze, a potent, sativa-dominant beauty of a strain. It’s very strong and tasty and the high is quite intense in a wonderful way.

1. In a small bowl, combine Canna-oil, vinegar, mustard, shallot, salt and pepper. Set aside. 2. In a large serving bowl, combine all of the remaining ingredients. 3. Toss salad w/ dressing & serve immediately.

INGREDIENTS

This is an amazing combination of tastes and textures. If blue cheese is not your thing, try goat cheese or feta.If you intend to make the salad in advance, you will need to toss the apples and pears with some lemon juice to prevent browning. Serves 4-6.

52/OCT. 2014 FACEBOOK.COM/NWLEAF

1/4 cup Canna-olive oil 1/4 cup sherry vinegar 1 small shallot, minced Fresh ground black pepper & salt 1 tsp. whole-grain Dijon mustard 1 head kale, baby, torn or chopped 1 ripe pear, cored and thinly sliced 1 apple, cored and thinly sliced ½ cup walnuts, chopped ¼ cup blue cheese

CANNA BAKED APPLES Baked apples are one of our favorites. I don’t like the apples to get too soft, but if you do, leave them in 8-10 more minutes than the recipe suggests...

1. Heat oven to 340 degrees. 2. Place the apples on a baking sheet with sides. 3. In a bowl, combine the brown sugar, pecans and cinnamon. Mix together to distribute evenly. 4. Place a chunk of Canna-butter in each apple cavity. 5. Drizzle with the heavy cream and bake for about 30 minutes. Before serving, drizzle with a bit more cream, as desired.

SAUTÉED CANNA PEARS AND CANNA APPLES W/ ICE CREAM I seem to remember that last year one of our local ice cream shops offered about five apple-infused ice creams. You could go with one of those — or just skip the boring line and do it yourself.

1. In a large skillet, melt the Canna-butter. Add apple and pear slices and cook over low/med. heat, stir occasionally, about 3-5 minutes. 2. Stir in the sugar, cinnamon and cranberries, reduce the heat to low and cook, stirring occasionally, until softened and lightly caramelized, about 10 minutes longer. 3. Divide among serving bowls and top with the ice cream.

INGREDIENTS

INGREDIENTS

2-4 Tbs. Canna-butter, softened 4 apples, cored almost to the bottom 2 Tbs. brown sugar 8 Tbs. pecans, chopped ½ tsp. cinnamon 4 Tbs. heavy cream, extra for drizzle before serving (optional)

2-3 Tbs. unsalted Canna-butter 2 apples, cored and sliced 1/4 inch thick 2 pears, cored and sliced 1/4 inch thick 4 Tbs. light brown sugar 4 tablespoons cranberries, fresh or frozen 4-6 scoops vanilla, or other, ice cream ½ tsp. cinnamon

Reviews Mary’s Medicinals Transdermal Patches 10mg CBD, THC & THCA or 10mg THC/CBD OPTION

Serving = 1 patch sativa/indica/combos available This new transdermal patch is going to revolutionize the way people view and use Cannabis. Don’t want to smoke a bowl? You don’t have to! Want a specific cannabinoid? You got it! These patches come in a variety of cannabinoid options, ensuring good choices for every patient. The patches come in stylish and easy-to-carry sealed bags, and when opened, they look just like a large bandage. Simply peel the back off and stick it to a veiny area of the body; they recommend the wrist or ankle. We felt the effects almost immediately. It’s a truly refreshing experience that is great for medicinal use. The patch can be removed easily if the effects are being felt too heavily — just take it off and the effects stop almost instantly. Because the cannabinoids are going straight into the bloodstream, 10mg on a transdermal patch is equivalent to roughly 80mg ingested orally, in our experience. The effects last a long time, too, providing up to 12 hours of pain relief with just one patch. They can also be cut into smaller sections depending on an individual’s dosage needs. The only thing we noticed is that when used for a full THE SCORE 12 hours, it can leave a light red Va l ue: mark where the patch was, but c o m fo rt: it fades after a day and did not E ffec t: cause any irritation. The best part about this new Packaging: product is the portability and Overa l l : anonymity it offers. Micro Strains Up Close Each month we’ll highlight growers crafting strains with the goal of helping specific needs, not necessarily obtaining the highest yields

T the cinex Excellent for managing pain

60/oct. 2014 FACEBOOK.COM/NWLEAF

his month’s strains are for those of us with spinal injuries

and the associated pain with recovery. Strains high in THC and minimal CBD have eased my suffering considerably. My journey with pain has held constant since my Army days, most recently due to a horrific motorcycle crash. I had more broken bones and other traumatic injuries than I can discuss here. The worst was the broken back and crushed pelvis, at over 100mg a day of Hydrocodone, it was all I could do to keep from screaming when it was at its worst. The healing would be slow and steady, thanks in great part to Cannabis. My life changed forever and landed me on the path to healthy sensible healing. All of my past articles have featured skilled growers with specific goals and needs. I have learned much from them. I have applied the knowledge gleaned from my journey to growing my own medicine. Last March I put seeds in the earth. They sprouted in short order. I had the honor of having a couple experts in the industry visit my place and get me on my way to success with pure organics and sunshine, Sjoerd explained to me that darkness was the key to success, and Tom went into the importance of feeding the micro-organisms that make roots and plant happy. Tyler and Shango got me into ocean-based organics. I listened to them and great success was to be had in this most excellent outdoor growing season. I have 12 strains just a week or so from harvest. They will fill my medicine cabinet for the coming winter. The two that show the most promise for my nerve rehabilitation are Shazam, and Cinex. Shazam is a product of Schrom and Ghost. Latest tests indicate 15-to-1 THC-to-CBD ratio. I’ll test them this fall. Indoor growers are pleased with its output and quality. The outdoor plants are still flowering and may reach 10 feet tall by eight feet in width. The flower is fruity and sweet, and, when inhaled, produces a tingle in the sinus followed by cascading wellness in the head and shoulders. Movement is easier and motivation is not a problem. Cinex is a cross of Vortex (also in my garden) and Cinderella 99. The flower has a distinct lemon pine smell and is great for pain abatement, and concentration on complicated tasks that are nearly impossible to do in the fog of irrepressible pain. With a 10-to-1 THC-to-CBD ratio it still manages pain relief without the effects that a pure sativa can sometime produce.

health & science A BOTANICAL MONOGRAPH

THE SECRET POWER OF

arnica

BY NORTHWEST LEAF SPECIAL CONTRIBUTOR DR. SCOTT D. ROSE

BY NORTHWEST LEAF SPECIAL CONTRIBUTOR SCOTT D. ROSE

Commonly known as Mountain tobacco, wolf ’s bane and leopard’s bane. Stems 1 to 2 feet tall, with usually a single flower head atop. Leaves are mostly at the base with one to two opposite leaf arrangements coming up the stem. The flower heads are yellow, about 2 inches in diameter.

Parts used:

The roots and dried orange-yellow flower heads are used medicinally.

Active constituents:

Volatile oil containing fatty acids, aromatic terpenes, flavonoids, tannins and sesquiterpenes.

(A. Montana) is found widely in mountainous areas of Washington, British Columbia and Europe.

Historical uses:

Drug interactions:

Arnica was discovered as a medicinal plant by Europeans in the 16th century and has been used in homeopathic treatments for years. In Russian traditional medicine, Arnica Montana flower extracts were used for the treatment of inflammation of the heart, heart pain, uterine bleeding, heart failure and many other uses. The American variety was used by American Indians and the early settlers.

Arnica might slow blood clotting. Taking arnica along with medications that also slow clotting might increase the chances of bruising and bleeding. Never take arnica internally, unless it’s in the form of homeopathic pills that contain too little arnica to cause harm, or under direct supervision of a physician or registered herbalist. Homeopathic arnica is safe.

Dosage:

Arnica compresses — 2 grams of herb per 100 milliliters of water or 1 tablespoon of arnica tincture in 1 pint of purified water. Apply topically with gauze. External ointments and tinctures — Not more than 20 percent to 25 percent tincture. Rub or massage the tincture freely onto injured area, and only on unbroken skin. Use ointments with no more than 15 percent arnica oil.

Medicinal uses:

Arnica soothes sore muscles and reduces pain and inflammation. The Commission E reports that when applied topically, arnica preparations have anti-inflammatory activity. In cases of inflammation, arnica preparations also show analgesic (pain relieving) and antibacterial activity. Bruises are reabsorbed faster after the use or application of arnica. British ambulance crews have long carried arnica to administer to victims of motor

64/oct. 2014 FACEBOOK.COM/NWLEAF

Contraindications:

Prolonged treatment of damaged skin often causes a puffy rash with the formation of pustules. Longer use can also give rise to eczema. Do not take if you have an asteraceae (daisy, ragweed) allergy, most common reaction is a rash indicating a sensitivity to helenalin. Arnica contains the toxin helenalin, which can be poisonous in large quantities. It produces severe stomach pain and internal bleeding of the digestive tract if enough material is ingested. Even contacting the plant can also cause skin irritation.

Side effects & toxicity:

This herb is for topical applications only. Do not take arnica internally. Even a small amount of pure arnica can kill or cause permanent damage.

vehicle accidents. Arnica is a common homeopathic remedy. Homeopathic arnica is indicated for acute injuries, including bruises, sprains, soreness, swelling and muscle spasms from sports activities, arthritis set off by seasonal changes, and general muscle and joint pain. At least one study has shown a decrease in postsurgical bruising when homeopathic arnica is administered around the time of surgery.

HOW TO STAY HEALTHY IN A TIME OF COUGHS, AND SO MUCH ILLNESS.

In

autumn, many people worry about the germs they’ll encounter while in public and how they will be affected if they become infected. Many people are paranoid about germs, perhaps rightly so, with ever-emerging viruses such as swine flu, SARS and Ebola. Many fear we’ll encounter new and never-before-seen viruses that our immune systems can’t overcome. However, the human immune system is a highly adaptable system with innate and acquired intelligence. The immune system is wired to heal. If scratched on the skin or infected by a pathogen, such as bacteria, virus, no thought process is necessary to activate the healing mechanisms in a healthy, competent immune system. The job of the immune system is essentially to evolve and react to environmental stimuli so it becomes more effective at recognizing what needs to be annihilated and eliminated. An unhealthy immune system leaves the body wide open to infection, especially chronic infection. So, how can you enhance your immune function

Vitamin C supplements are beneficial

to the immune system during times of infection. The adage that one should, “starve a cold and feed a fever” might be somewhat true. While starvation is not beneficial for the body, calorie restriction increases immune function. Scientists at the University of Southern California have demonstrated that fasting, or not consuming solid foods for three days, “resets” the immune system, which could benefit the common cold. Herbs are the basis of traditional Chinese herbal medicine, Ayurvedic medicine from India and Western herbology, with its roots in the teachings of Hippocrates. Plants such as the Chinese herb astragalus, or huang chi, are potent immuno-stimulants. One study of more than 500 people with significant previous histories of frequent colds and flus had almost three times fewer infections while taking astragalus. They also had shorter recovery times. Echinacea, or the purple cone flower, can prevent or limit the severity of colds. One should not consume echinacea long term due to its effectiveness at boosting the numbers of white blood cells, which over time might start to run deficient. Green tea is an herb that is rich in antioxidant nutrients and phytochemicals beneficial to the immune system. One of the more powerful compounds in green tea is the antioxidant epigallocatechin gallate. During the fight-or-flight response (short-term stress), the brain sends a signal to the adrenal glands to create hormones called cortisol and adrenaline (the stress hormones), which increase heart rate and breathing, and dilate the blood vessels to bring more blood to the muscles. This type of acute reaction not only helps with the fight and or the flight, but also in the healing response with increased immunity for three to five days after the stressful event. This is a normal response to stress that humans are designed to recover from, given adequate rest from stressors. Humans often have trouble getting back to a routine after stressful events, whether it’s a car accident or a divorce. Thinking about the event, dreaming about it and worrying about it creates long-term problems. Activating the stress response in this way interferes with the immune system. Depression, lack of social support and social ties cause significant stress and are injurious to immune function. Social ties are thought to strengthen the immune system because like-minded health-conscious individuals support one another in beneficial behaviors such as eating, sleeping and exercising. Good friends can also help dissipate negative events. Exercise is beneficial for immunity, as long as it’s not too intense. In a study using mice, one group rested, one group ran leisurely for 20 to 30 minutes

Just 30 minutes of aerobic exercise, such as a brisk walk, will sweep white blood cells back into circulation, making your immune system run more smoothly. Moderate exercise can consist of biking a few times a week, 20 to 30 minute walks daily, going to the gym every other day, and even playing golf regularly (so long as you are off the cart and walking around the course). and the third group ran at high intensity for 2.5 hours. All were exposed to the flu at the start, and this routine was repeated for three days. About half of the sedentary group died, 12 percent of the leisurely runners died and 70 percent of the high-intensity group died. Moderate intensity seems to be best. Marathon runners are prone to lowered immunity and higher infection rates after they complete a race up to weeks later. It takes just 30 minutes of aerobic exercise — a brisk walk counts — to sweep white blood cells back into circulation, making your immune system run more smoothly. Moderate exercise can consist of biking a few times a week, 20 to 30 minute walks daily, going to the gym every other day, and even playing golf regularly (walking the course). Cold temperatures do not seem to play a factor in a person’s susceptibility to infection. The reason winter is the cold and flu season is not because of the cold temperatures; it’s because people are indoors more and in closer contact with others for germ transmission. Heat however, has shown to be beneficial within certain temperature ranges. Treatments that raise the core body temperature and simulate the fever response in the body are called hyperthermia treatments. Fever is a natural mechanism of the body for fighting infection. A fever is one of the first elements of immune defense. Many pathogens cannot live at the elevated temperatures, lowering the number of active pathogens. Some will take fever reducers such as acetaminophen in products such as Tylenol and Excedrin, but fever is not the disease. The fever is the body working hard doing what it knows how to do; the fatigue and joint aches force people to be still and rest.

‘‘

A way to work with the fever response instead of against it is the warming sock treatment. You can find many references to this technique online, so I will just give the basics here. Grab a pair of cotton socks, mid-calf — not kneehighs — and soak them in ice cold water. Soak your feet in hot water for 5 to 10 minutes (add epsom salts, if available, at 1 cup per gallon). Take the cotton socks out of the ice cold water, wring them out and put them on your feet. Then put wool or acrylic socks, which should be a bit higher than the cotton ones, over the wet socks. Go to bed and in the morning the socks will be dry and warm. The pumping effect induced in the vasculature by the hot foot soak, then the cold wet socks, and then the wicking action of the wool or acrylic drying and warming the feet all stimulate the immune cells. The initial cold phase shunts blood out of the legs and into the core of the body, allowing the body to mount and maintain a higher core body temperature. This technique can be used for colds, flu, sinus infections, headaches and even insomnia. Perform three nights in a row. Many elements work together to form a healthy immune system. A proper diet, social interactions, vitamins, minerals, herbs and exercise can aid the immune response and bolster its reserves. Practicing basic hygiene such as frequently washing hands and coughing/sneezing into your elbow are critical to reducing exposure to pathogens. Listening to the bodies’ symptoms and acting accordingly, such as resting when sick, is the most important thing you can do.

e want the light, but we don’t want the heat that comes with it. Welcome to the tail-chasing experience of dialing in the environment for an indoor garden. Welcome to the heat. Many people start their first gardens small. Lower watts and air-cooled hoods can be effective in the Northwest at removing heat from small garden environments — so much so that many growers become interested in graduating to a larger garden. But when you introduce more watts, you get the heat and you’ll need to explore the many mechanisms and devices that exist to remove it. Many gardeners hit a point where introducing air conditioning is the next step. Several clever formulas are out there to calculate the total BTUs (a measurement of energy that’s equivalent to about 1,055 joules) needed to remove the amount of heat generated by your lights. Most estimate 3,000 to 4,000 BTUs for every 1,000 watts of naked light (non-air cooled) being used. For air-cooled lights, you’ll have a lot of room for variance, depending on the efficiency of the air cooling setup you run. When you run the numbers and start shopping, you’ll quickly learn that air conditioning can be expensive. Many gardeners choose portable air conditioning units to save money and for convenience — or so they think. In this month’s Grow Tech, I will shed light on the inefficiencies, deficiencies and high costs I have found with portable AC units when it comes to indoor Cannabis farming. Let’s start with the basic mechanism all AC units

Compounding this is that the exhaust fan decreases efficiency based on the length and shape of the ducting run it takes before reaching its evacuation point, much like a run of air-cooled lights. All of this inefficiency is expressed in the low EER (energy efficient rating) these units carry. When a unit is rated at a 5 EER, it means 50 percent of the energy used isn’t going toward cooling — it’s going toward evacuating the heat it generates. When calculating the size AC you need, use effective BTUs, not advertised BTUs. One of the lesser-known distinguishing facts about portable units is that unlike mini splits, they are not regulated by the Department of Energy. All mini splits sold in this country must meet exacting energy-efficiency standards. With portables, anything goes. This loophole is leveraged by manufacturers to reduce manufacturing costs, use lower-quality parts and designs, and deliver a lower-cost looking product with big BTU values printed front and center. Let me assure you, they are good at their jobs.

et’s say you are looking to cool your 3,000 watt garden. You run the numbers and decide 12,000 BTUs will be sufficient, so you get a 12,000 BTU portable unit. The problem, though, is the unit is rated at a 5 EER. This means that of the 12,000 BTUs, 6,000 BTUs aren’t useable and you are massively undercooling your garden. The rest of the BTUs are being used to cool the compressor coils, the fan, replace the lost ambient-cooled air it uses to cool itself and account for the garden is space and to properly use a portable you ambient heat brought in through the leaks created use a lot of space that otherwise could be occuby the negative pressure. To remove heat, AC units use a compressor with two sets of coils. The coils use a refrigerant to carry out “phase conversion.” Simply put, when liquids turn to gas, heat is absorbed. When buying an AC unit, prioritize the design of your garden; build the garden around the unit.

ne of my most encouraging experiences in this community lately has been judging the 29 entries in the Washington Growers Harvest Cup. The level of excellence shown in the competition was inspiring. Each grower involved was given identical genetics of three strains: an indica, a sativa and a high-CBD strain. In addition, growers had the option of submitting their favorite strain, but that wasn’t required and only about three growers did so — all three of those, however, were spectacular. Each strain was ranked from 1 (poor) to 5 (great) on flavor, smell, appearance and effect, with room provided for additional judges’ remarks. As I made my way through the 29 strains during a very pleasant five days, I occasionally felt moved to add a few words of praise or, occasionally, observations in the comments section.

I hope the format of this competition catches on and is used at more events. The identical genetics means it is the growers who are competing, not the strains. Dawn Darrington of Choice Wellness in Seattle is to be commended for a well-run event. It’s interesting to think about a similar competition with more strains. Although the logistics likely would be more complicated, a field of, say, three sativas, three indicas and a couple of CBD strains would give growers more opportunities to strut their stuff. Some of the versions of the same sativa and indica genetics were simply amazing in the obvious level of care taken in their growing and curing, even within the limited time frame. To know that this level of growing skill exists in the Cannabis community gives us tremendous

It also reinforces the importance of protecting and preserving genetic diversity with the help of the 15-plant limit here. Let’s all remember just how important it is to preserve the culture of patient Cannabis cultivation when the Legislature reconvenes in January.

BAG APPEAL & SMOKE REPORT this is another jump-off-the-shelf type of bloom, which is all the

more impressive because it isn’t purple. Caked on cakes of cakey trichomes demolish any chance of the plants color to come through. It’s simply a blond, sandy, white mess of resin covering all parts of the pointy blooms. What I admire is that in spite of it being so committed to creating frost, it’s not at all at the cost of the smell. Living up fully and truly to its name, these are some of the stickiest blooms when properly dried and cured. What a pure delight it is to see a strain rise to the top with this terpene profile. Gorilla Glue #4 has the pungent smell of old school diesel and minty fuel combined with an epically greasy and metallic finish that pries the pupils wide open.

A crazy love triangle of lesbian self’d crosses, or so the story goes, creator Josey Wales entered this into the LA Cannabis Cup earlier in the year. This previously unknown strain rocketed into stardom with a first place victory.

conditions in five to seven days. But when cloning is dialed in, you can expect roots in 48 to 72 hours. Fast and vigorous in veg, she likes to drink a lot and isn’t nutrient sensitive. She will take off fast and start stretching and throwing side branches almost immediately, so training and topping is a must to maximize yields in a horizontally lit garden. I found she ran best when branch selection was moderate to aggressive. In bloom, you can expect a 100 percent stretch and if your branch selection is sound, the need for support will still be fairly high. If you missed in branch selection, watch out for chaotic stretching branching. Either way, support and heavy training is most beneficial in the first three weeks of bloom. This plant is not an easy one to shape and shows more of her diesel heritage in this department. Get the stretch right, though, and you’re home free to watch as unbelievable amounts of resin frost every part of the high calyx-to-leaf ratio. She will develop medium to large spear-shaped blooms that are so calyx heavy that one can look forward to an easy trim job. Like most of the frost monsters, she benefits from higher levels of phosphorous, potassium and magnesium.

EFFECTS Sour, dark chocolate menthol flavors translate into mild lung

expansion, making large single doses almost too easy. The sour, gassy, burned rubber exhale leaves and you get an immediate tongue-tingling, head-wringing feeling that only the most potent meds deliver. The instant change in head state is generously complemented by a relaxing body effect. Comfortable and alert without a noticeable spike in appetite, the glue leaves its users happy, euphoric and in a creative state. Unless multiple doses are indulged, one can expect the body effect not to interfere with the uplifting cerebral effect. Use caution. Like most meds that test in the mid-20s for THC, indulgence can bring narcosis quickly and unexpectedly.

SUMMARY: While not ideal for inexperienced gardeners, Gorilla Glue #4 delivers medium to high yields of blooms of the absolute frostiest nature.
