Editor’s Note Thanks for picking up The Oregon Leaf Harvest Issue! We’ve been publishing our harvest issues for many years now, and it continues to be one of my favorites. There is something truly special about outdoor Cannabis, and the people who put their livelihoods on the line to grow a plant for six or more months with no guarantee of success. Welcome to farming! On top of the sacrifices and risks they face, they also face stigma about the quality of the product they have worked so hard to produce. I ENCOURAGE But let me tell you this. . . ALL OF OUR Cannabis is a plant and the natural expression of READERS TO FLIP terpenes and flavors that the plant produces when THROUGH OUR exposed to sunlight can never be replicated in an indoor environment. SCENIC HARVEST I encourage all of our readers to flip through SPECIAL, READ our scenic harvest special, read the stories of true THE STORIES OF farm life, and enjoy this magazine that we worked TRUE FARM LIFE, so hard to create. But I also challenge you to go AND ENJOY THIS next month and purchase sungrown Cannabis, and experience the plant in a natural form. MAGAZINE THAT Believe me when I say that while it may look WE WORKED SO different than indoor flowers, it’s no less beautiful HARD TO CREATE. - and much more tasty than the mid-grade indoor Cannabis flooding the market. On a sustainability note, our planet, societies and industries are all at a turning point decided by us as enlightened consumers. Do we want synthetic, harmful products for our bodies? Do we want hothouse grown and pesticide sprayed vegetables, or weed? My vote goes to organic fruits and veggies for our families, and an agricultural system that gives back to the Earth. So, what impact do we want our favorite recreational plant to have on our planet? Society votes and decides its future with dollars, and I hope that everyone reading this gives outdoor Cannabis a try. It supports both the farmer and the environment. Not to mention, both your head and your heart will thank you for it! As always, thank you for reading, and please enjoy our Harvest Issue while samping the bounty of this year’s crop!

NATIONAL SUSTAINABILITY AWARD GOES TO SISKIYOU SUNGROWN

On October 4, Oregon’s own Siskiyou Sungrown was presented with the First Place Cannabis Sustainability Award. Company owners Cedar and Madrone Grey were at the Denver event to accept the honor. The national event - now in its fourth year - is hosted by the Cannabis Certification Council, a body of industry experts comprised of the Ethical Cannabis Alliance of Portland and the Organic Cannabis Association of Denver. The Sustainability Award is handed out to recognized companies “for their work to improve sustainability in their operations and communities.” This year’s second and third place awards went to Colorado companies Native Roots and Smokey’s Cannabis Co. Siskiyou Sungrown’s commitment to sustainable, organic farming practices began back in 2014 (before recreational legalization) when they entered the Oregon medical market. The company utilizes “degrees in biochemistry, soil science, engineering, health science, and geology, along with advanced study in entomology and permaculture” to produce Cannabis and hemp with organic inputs. You can find their tinctures, softgels, FECOs and more at Oregon dispensaries, and hemp products are available online.

Liquor Control Commission (OLCC) and Oregon Health Authority (OHA), and directed regulating bodies to bring a “ban on flavored vaping products.” On top of the immediate implications, the agencies were given a 90 day period to adopt “plans for consumer warnings...ingredient disclosures, testing” and more. The governor also instructed OLCC and OHA members to “develop legislative proposals” that would permanently prohibit all flavored vaping products, disclose ingredients, increase regulatory oversight, and establish a “statewide prevention and education campaign.” What does this mean for Cannabis cartridge consumers? Oregonians can expect to see more restrictions soon, but for now, they can still find a plethora of vape products free of non-Cannabis additives.

Kentucky-based hemp company, Elemental Processing, has filed a lawsuit against HP farms of Troutdale, Oregon. Information released in a report by the Associated Press revealed that the plaintiffs estimate a loss of “at least $44 million in profits” after entering an agreement with the Oregon producer. According to the AP report, the Kentucky company made an initial payment of around $352,000 to HP Farms for “6.4 million highquality, mature, feminized seeds with a CBD potency greater than 10% and a germination rate higher than 90%.” Elemental Processing claims the seeds were then redistributed to numerous farms, only to find out that 70% of them were male. HP Farms has not made any public comment on the matter and the Oregon Judicial Department has not yet disclosed a court date.

inhaled. Pesticides on the approved list are required to pass a thermal decomposition test, but without established tolerances and long-term Cannabis data, the results seem to provide an empty argument based on other industries. If you’ve been in the field or been keeping an eye on your social media feed, you’ve probably noticed a trending topic: the weather. In August, Central Oregon grows (not sheltered by indoor operations) experienced extreme hail, an event that toppled hundreds of acres of hemp and Cannabis. In September, farms were again faced with unseasonable issues when record-breaking rainfall and cold temperatures swept through Portland and surrounding areas. According to the National Weather Service, some areas even experienced the “coldest September day since 1948.” Just as everyone was recovering, October rolled around and with it, a heavy frost. Now, many farms are preparing for large losses as they watch crops die rapidly under the conditions. Mold is always a cause for concern in Oregon’s agricultural community and should be for consumers with compromised immune systems. This year the extra moisture and cold weather are likely to impact the presence of potentially harmful spores. Fungal strains like botrytis (also known as “bud rot”) and aspergillus can pop-up on Cannabis and other crops when cultivated or stored improperly. It may seem like an issue for the farmers, but Oregon has lax microbiological contaminant testing regulations, and consumers have to look out for themselves. There has been a debate in the community for some time about whether fungi and other microbiological contaminants can be removed through processing (with methods of hydrocarbon extraction), but without hard evidence or scientific accountability, these arguments are anecdotally based. The reality is that this industry is moving swiftly and lacking federal oversight. We may not all look at that oversight as a positive thing, but that very presence is the same that has provided research and safety standards for most of what we consume today. Without it, we are left to trust smaller state data sets and private parties with the future of our health. As a consumer, we can feel quite distant from the very farms that produce our Cannabis and hemp products, and therefore, unaffected by issues like a rough season. So why talk about the weather, pest infestations, and lax regulation? Because it affects the quality of products circulating in our market. Products that you will be smoking, vaping, and eating. If we have evolved to understand that production methods, pesticide use, and proper handling matter when it comes to our food, why not our Cannabis? It’s always a good idea to educate yourself, but a particularly difficult harvest year and evolving data around health risks make it increasingly necessary to know what you smoke.

Mechoulam is known as the “Grandfather of Cannabis research.”
oregonlEAF.COM
THE NAME RAPHAEL MECHOULAM MAY NOT BE FAMILIAR TO YOU, BUT HIS LEGACY IS THAT OF A TRUE PIONEER WITHIN THE CANNABIS INDUSTRY IN THE 20TH AND 21ST CENTURIES. In fact, without Mechoulam’s scientific discoveries, we may have never made it to the zenith of Cannabis knowledge that we enjoy today. Put simply, Mechoulam, an unassuming elderly gentleman, is an Israeli organic chemist and professor of Medical Chemistry at Hebrew University of Jerusalem in Israel. Raised in Bulgaria, he was a child of the holocaust, with his father actually surviving a concentration camp. Eventually he moved to Israel and started work at Hebrew University. He is best known for isolating the organic compound tetrahydrocannabinol - better known as THC - but the way that he did it back in the 1960s is truly remarkable. He also identified the endogenous cannabinoid, anandamide, in the human brain. Dr. Mechoulam knew that Cannabis was used for thousands of years by humanity for sacred,
NOV. 2019
he decided to conduct his first observations at a dinner party with a group of acquaintances and friends. He had his wife bake a chocolate cake and the willing participants took THC (10mg dosed in icing on the cake), while five of the party members abstained as a control, so that Mechoulam could ascertain the effects. None of the people at the dinner party had tried Cannabis before. The most surprising thing to Mechoulam and his colleagues? Everyone at the party experienced Cannabis differently. One of the participants had an anxiety attack, and the others ranged from laughing fits to mellow or subdued reactions. It took a long time for Mechoulam’s discoveries to actually have any real application, though, due mostly to the prohibition of Cannabis. For example, his team helped to pave the way for using CBD to treat Epilepsy - some 30 years ago! Nowadays, Mechoulam is hoping that the same thing doesn’t happen with his newest discovery - the synthesizing of stable acids found within living Cannabis plants. Most of us consume Cannabis that is dead. But Mechoulam and a group of researchers medical and recreational purposes. But announced in September that they have develwith the advent of new scientific technology oped a process for creating synthetic, stable and methods, he wanted to know just what acids that include variants of CBD and THC Cannabis was doing to the human body which may lead to new medical discoveries in and brain when consumed. the future. SARA ASHER Sara Asher is a born-and-raised Oregonian who grew up in Eugene. In 2014, she began using Cannabis medicinally to treat ulcerative colitis (UC), an autoimmune disease that leaves lasting inflammation and ulcers that target the digestive track, and has required major surgery for Sara. Here we find a true patient and advocate for Cannabis treatment of both UC and Crohn’s disease, hoping to reach and educate others struggling with the same medical issues. WHAT DO YOU USE CANNABIS TO TREAT? My primary diagnosis is ulcerative colitis. It is a form of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), very similar to Crohn’s disease. My immune system attacks my large intestine reactions, causing ulcerations throughout my intestines and leading to issues of frequent bowel movements, blood loss, loss of appetite, extreme fatigue, nausea and vomiting, arthritis, skin issues, etc. I had surgery in 2018 to remove my large intestine and rectum. The inflammation and ulcerations led to my large intestine tearing open. Fortunately, the surgeon caught it before it went septic. Since half of my gastrointestinal tract is missing, I live with a permanent ostomy bag attached to my abdomen to collect stool. As unglamorous as this can seem, I view my ostomy as my lifesaver. While I am definitely far from 100%, I can eat most things, live with a significant reduction in pain, and at least have some quality of life. I feel that it is important that we talk about Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, and living with an ostomy, because this is the reality for more than three million Americans. Unfortunately, most people do not talk about their disease or ostomy due to the unpleasant nature of it. This leads to many unnecessary mental health issues within this demographic. I have a decent following on my Instagram page (@ChronicallySaraUC) where I continually spread awareness around living with IBD and a permanent ostomy. If I’ve helped one person feel normal then my job is done. I am also an avid advocate of medical Cannabis consumption in the IBD realm, and have spoken openly about it on my Instagram page for the last five years. I am continually flooded with IBD patients in my DM inquiring about Cannabis and how to utilize it as a treatment for their disease. IT’S ADMIRABLE TO SEE HOW YOU HAVE TRANSFORMED YOUR PAINFUL EXPERIENCE INTO ADVOCACY FOR OTHERS DEALING WITH THE SAME OR SIMILAR ISSUES. WHEN DID YOU DECIDE TO GET YOUR OMMP CARD? I immediately got my OMMP card after I had consumed Cannabis following my diagnosis in late 2014. I went from having 50 bowel movements a day Medical professionals are often leery about with severe pain, urgency, and blood loss, down to 15 condoning a legitimate treatment bathroom Cannabis trips dailyas after using Cannabis. None of option. But after consistent talks the pharmaceuticals they put mewith on her would cause this doctor, was open about herIt choices positiveRaina reduction in symptoms. was at and that moment successfully advocated for treatment options outside traditional western medicine.
apR. 2019 NOV. 2019
WHAT’S WORKED FOR HER
“FOR THE LONGEST RELIEF POSSIBLE, I UTILIZE EDIBLES FREQUENTLY AND RSO/ FECO CAPSULES (0.25G) DAILY FOR PAIN RELIEF.”
I became a firm believer in the power of Cannabis as the ultimate symptom reliever for inflammatory bowel diseases. Cannabis allows my body to calm down and reach a level of homeostasis that it otherwise couldn’t. My body does not function normally, and Cannabis allows me to interact in public - not be completely housebound and in the bathroom. WHAT STRAINS, CANNABINOIDS AND TERPENES PROVIDE THE BEST RELIEF IN YOUR EXPERIENCE? AND WHAT FORMS OF CANNABIS DO YOU PREFER TO USE? Citrus terpenes and high THC content are very effective for my nausea. The pharmaceutical antiemetics can have a variety of side effects - like most pharmaceuticals - so I try not to use those regularly. Strains high in CBG content are very effective when I am having intestinal spasming. Strains abundant in CBD (with THC) can help immensely with inflammation-based pain. I do not respond to CBD only or isolate products. I do very poorly if I do not ingest Cannabis. For the longest relief possible, I utilize edibles frequently and RSO/FECO capsules (¼ gram daily) for pain relief. I am an avid dabber and enjoy extracts for my smoking consumption. I deal with a wide array of symptoms and issues, so the strength of extracts is ideal in helping my body reach a level of comfort.
When I did have my large intestine, I was a frequent user of Cannabis suppositories. It made a huge difference in blood loss and bathroom trips after ingestion. WHAT ARE THE CHALLENGES TO USING CANNABIS AS A TREATMENT OPTION? There are extreme challenges to being a medical Cannabis patient. As legalization continues to occur in this country, the stigma of Cannabis use has not seemed to decrease. I went to my follow-up appointment with my colorectal surgeon the month after my colectomy surgery in late 2018, and when I received the standard paperwork to fill out, I had noticed I was labeled as an “illicit drug user” because of my Cannabis use - in a legal, recreational and medical state - prescribed by my doctor. However, 60mg of Oxycontin they had me on after surgery was totally fine, no labels there. I strongly believe that by doctors limiting pain relieving modalities such as Cannabis, they further contribute to the opioid epidemic. IBD is a very painful disease. I was fortunate to live and be diagnosed in Oregon, where there is an abundance of Cannabis. Unfortunately this isn’t the case for most IBD patients.

BO COSTELL0 NOV. 2019
WHEN DID YOU FIRST COME ACROSS SOLVENTLESS EXTRACTION? My first experience making hash was a decade ago at High Hopes Farm in Ruche, Oregon. Me and a couple homies would bust out multiple pounds a day for over 200 OMMP cardholders. Some of it is still the best hash I have ever made. The owner, James Bowman, had a collection of his genetics that just dumped fire melt. My favorite strain he did was Zonkers (Bubblegum × Hashplant). Good times up until the feds shut down the farm.
WHAT ARE SOME OF THE TOP STRAINS YOU HAVE BEEN WASHING LATELY? The list is endless as of right now. Over the last two weeks, I have been washing through multiple test batches from farms that I look up to most, and picking the winners has been nearly impossible. Some of the standouts are Tallymon by Ananda, Grease Monkey from Benson Arbor, and Black Dog from Indigo, but my favorite so far is Strawberry Guava from Sacred Flower Farms. It’s hard to complain when a fruity strain knocks me out like an OG.
WHAT IS YOUR PREFERRED METHOD OF CONSUMING CANNABIS? Either a hash or rosin dab, of course! It doesn’t mean I won’t smoke a joint or a Backwood, but I usually still spice them up with some hash and/or rosin in the mix. But lately, I have been feeling just the full melt bubble hash. It has the purest flavor and the most full-spectrum high. I am hoping to bring some to the market before the holidays.
IN YOUR OPINION, WHAT ARE SOME OF THE MAJOR DIFFERENCES BETWEEN SOLVENTLESS AND HYDROCARBON EXTRACTION?
“THE FIRST TIME I SMOKED ROSIN, I KNEW IT WAS GOING TO BE WHAT I DID,” BO SAYS.
“TOO MUCH TIME OF MINE HAS BEEN WASTED WORRYING ABOUT BEING ARRESTED FOR GROWING A PLANT. AFTER TEN YEARS OF ALL THOSE WORRIES, RECREATIONAL CANNABIS HAS ALLOWED ME PERSONALLY TO EXPRESS MY TRUE PASSION FOR THE PLANT AND SPREAD IT TO THE COMMUNITY. I’M LIVING IN AN ABSOLUTE DREAM.”
Hash is a much less adulterated product. There is minimal manipulation to make a superior concentrate. The only solvent utilized in my process is water, and the end product is left with zero added solvents — whereas BHO tends to leave traces of solvent residuals. I used to mess around with BHO extraction but never felt safe doing it, or had the money to buy the crazy setups to process it properly. The first time I smoked rosin, I knew it was going to be what I did.
WHAT IS YOUR MAIN DRIVING FORCE BEHIND BO’S NOSE KNOWS? The community and our right to clean herb. I’ve been given the opportunity to be a part of something I love during its infancy on the recreational side. Too much time of mine has been wasted worrying about being arrested for growing a plant. After ten years of all those worries, recreational Cannabis has allowed me personally to express my true passion for the plant and spread it to the community. I’m living in an absolute dream.
WHY DO YOU PREFER SOLVENTLESS TO OTHER FORMS OF EXTRACTION? Because it is the cleanest smoke with the best flavor. I feel better smoking solventless. My lungs have thanked me, that’s for sure. So far there is no way to polish a rosin turd, so you can assume if the concentrate is good, the material processed was too.
WHY DO YOU CHOSE TO WORK WITH ONLY ORGANIC GARDENS? First of all, I think - just as a consumer - that organic flower is far superior to anything grown with salt-based nutrients. I noticed this right away, but was still convinced by grow shops and nutrient companies that I couldn’t get the quality without this bottle or that bottle. Working at High Hopes Farm taught me that less is more and that most of the nutrients the plants needed were already on the land. Secondly, the environment is at risk with this new style of mono-crop agriculture. Uneducated farmers are buying high numbered NPK, thinking that is what it takes to grow the dank, while most of the NPK is being washed right into the rivers and causing rapid pollution. Plus, any native soil used for salt-grown will be wiped out of its natural biology. Agriculture isn’t the best for the environment, so taking the extra steps to preserve it is crucial. Thirdly, I have noticed a vast difference between each grow environment and the vibe between the two styles. Organic farms tend to have more passion for the plant and are just trying to let it do what it does, compared to the majority of salt grown farms that are trying to force it to do what they want it to do.
Follow Bo on Instagram | @BosNoseKnows A Stoner Owner is a Cannabis business owner who has a relationship with the plant. RyanVanderpool WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST CANNABIS EXPERIENCE? I have the odd and unusual story of actually trying Cannabis with my parents for the first time. When I was in high school, it was brought to my father and mother’s attention that I had ADHD, and instead of going with the doctor’s recommendation of using Adderall, they took me home and had me smoke a bowl of Cannabis. After I took a small toke, they sent me to my room to do my homework. About an hour later I came out with it completed. When describing how I felt to my parents, I informed them that I could focus on one thing at a time and my brain was not wandering in all different directions. From then on, I was only allowed to smoke after school and it was limited to one bowl until I was 18. It was risky for my parents to make that decision, but worth it in the long run.

“MY FAVORITE PART IS THE RELATIONSHIPS AND TRUST THAT I GET TO BUILD WITH PATIENTS AND CUSTOMERS. EVERY PERSON IS COMPLETELY DIFFERENT, AND IT IS MY JOB TO FIND THE PRODUCTS THAT ARE GOING TO BEST HELP THEM.” Fireside is a shop that has quietly built a cult following in Jackson County. W hile that’s due in part to the excellent items from local, top tier producers that are stocked on their shelves, it’s also due in part to the staff they select – including this month’s featured budtender, Ryan Vanderpool. WHAT ARE YOUR HOBBIES AND INTERESTS OUTSIDE OF THE CANNABIS INDUSTRY? Besides having a wonderful session with the homies, I enjoy spending time with my wonderful soon-to-be wife, Megan, and our three kiddos. We enjoy going on hikes and going to art shows, plus we are a family of foodies - so we are always looking for the hole-in-the-wall restaurants that have the best unknown food. I collect glass and that is my biggest hobby outside of Cannabis, but at the same time, they go hand in hand.
NOV. 2019
HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN A BUDTENDER? WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE PART OF THE JOB? I have been a budtender for three years now. My favorite part is the relationships and trust that I get to build with patients and customers. Every person is completely different, and it is my job to find the products that are going to best help them. By making recommendations that work for the patient/customer, you build trust, which then turns into a bond that can be hard to break.
WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE STRAINS? FAVORITE EFFECTS AND TERPENE PROFILES? Because of my ADHD I tend to lean towards strains that have a good mixture of limonene and myrcene. Limonene helps my brain stay focused and on track, while the myrcene helps me slow down and provides relief for my PTSD. Some of my favorite cultivars are Orange Fire grown by Benson Arbor, Fresh Squeezed OG grown by Bula Buds, and Colorado Sunshine grown by Focus North Gardens. I lean towards orange/citrus terpenes and I am always a fan of strains that have Jack or Durban attributes. HOW DO YOU FIND THE RIGHT STRAINS FOR A CUSTOMER? When deciding the right product/strains for a customer I ask a lot of questions. Without knowing what brought them in on that given day, I would not know what to recommend. First I ask some basic questions like “When thinking about Cannabis use, what do you see yourself doing? Edibles? Topicals?” I will start to learn about the customer and then I can start directing them towards a product that I feel will help them the most. We don’t put THC percentages on the front tags so the customer has to ask us, which then allows us to ask more questions.
WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE WHAT MAKES YOUR SHOP’S APPROACH METHOD OF TO CUSTOMER CONSUMING SERVICE CANNABIS? DIFFERENT? “We’re in love with strains,” said owner Dave Uribe. “We buy small increments of really great things so we can bring really great things in, and not keep them for as long. People always want to come in and ask what’s new.” Hearing him discuss with his staff the tightly curated selection, displayed at eye-level behind the counter and on paper menus, a customer can tell that these are flower people. Where some shops carry dozens upon dozens of strains, Kanopy 7 had the spotlight on an array of flower from two farms on our visit: Old Gold Gardens and Deschutes Growery. The always stellar Deschutes occupied the premium tier, with prices mostly in the teens, with Grape Pie ($20/gram, 23% THC) filling out the high end. Prices on Old Gold flower stayed in the $5 (Pink Candy, 21% THC) and $6 (Time Traveler, 22% THC) range. There were only about a dozen strains available on our visit, and Uribe says that the selection will grow to 25 strains of straight fire once the harvest comes down. Those looking for strain overload may want to look elsewhere, but those looking for quality won’t be disappointed.
EDIBLES
3/5
Looking over the slight edibles selection at Kanopy 7, it’s obvious that’s not the shop’s primary focus. Uribe says that’s a function of his inventory managers catering to their customer base, which he says doesn’t come into the shop looking for infused food. Still, their selection as it stands is solid, with single-serve and multipack Stone Age Edibles and Golden making up the bulk of the list.

CONCENTRATES 4/5
Extracts made up the majority of Kanopy 7’s menu, with 40 different offerings from eight producers: White Label Extracts, Willamette Valley Alchemy, Bobsled Extracts, Queen B, Echo Electuary, Anthology, Nugget Candy Co., and Dirty Arm Farm. The majority of the list focused heavily on live resin, ranging from $21.60 for Anthology’s Purple Punch (65% THC) to $48 for White Label’s Grape High Chew (87.5% THC). Nugget Candy Co.’s lineup of ice hash provided the most affordable, old-school touch to the menu in the $18-$20 range, and Queen B’s solventless rosin occupied the premium tier with its Mendo Breath Honey ($60, 83.3% THC).

Looking around at the design of the shop masterminded by co-owner Bryan Derewicz - it makes sense that Kanopy 7 plans to put a podcast recording studio in its neighboring space. The shop itself has that recording studio feel, with the high-concept design of the front wall and the sound-dampening panels lining the ceiling. “When we built it, we had all of these hard surfaces, and it was bouncing a lot of sound,” Uribe said. “It sounds so much better now.” The finely tuned acoustics of the space make it easy to discuss the well-merchandised display cases and the jaw-dropping local art lining the walls (also for sale).

In the heart of one of the world’s premier Cannabis cultivating regions, it’s not easy to make a name for yourself - yet Kanopy 7 succeeds by knowing its clientele and serving it well. GREEN VALLEY WELLNESS STRAINS 4/5
Interestingly enough, down in Southern Oregon dispensaries do things a bit differently. Ordinarily in the Portland and Eugene shops, you will find indoor cultivars as most place’s top shelf. I personally very much enjoyed that Green Valley Wellness offers a middle shelf for indoor grown strains, as well as a top shelf for their sungrown options. Sungrown flower provides a complex terpene profile that is near impossible to mimic indoors. Shopping here is made a breeze with their color-coded system - purple for indica, green for sativa, orange for hybrid, and blue for CBD hybrid. Freedom Farms, Maraki, Lucky Lion, Pud’s Buds, and Epic Family Farms were just a few of the farms stocked, with grams ranging from $7.20-$14.40.

CHERRY LIMEADE IS A CROSS BETWEEN CHERRY PIE AND PURE KUSH X BLACK LIME, BRED BY MEAN GENE FROM MENDOCINO, CALIFORNIA. Each nug boasts beautiful dark purple hues, similar to that of the Cherry Pie. Opening the jar instantly fills the room with pungent notes of cherry funk, licorice, and a hint of citrus. The buds are rather fresh and sticky, so a grinder is recommended to more evenly break down the material. I rolled up a few joints to share with friends and was really blown away with the flavor, smoothness, and overall quality of the smoke. This is definitely some of the better flower I’ve smoked recently. The effects are rather sedating and relaxing, which makes Cherry Limeade a great potential option for consumers and patients seeking relief from chronic pain, appetite loss, and insomnia. I’m excited to try more of Liontree Farm’s offerings from this harvest, and hope to see some of these terpene rich flowers extracted into premium live resin from the closely related Sterling Gold Extracts.

TKO RESERVE
BLUE CITY COOKIES
NOV. 2019
A
decade ago, Allie and Charlie Cassidy couldn’t have possibly predicted that their Seattle-based medical Cannabis delivery service would lead them to Oregon. Yet in 2015, when the burgeoning recreational industry dampened the Washington medical market, the couple embarked on a journey that transformed them into influential pioneers of the Oregon Cannabis industry. “It was a blessing in disguise,” Allie said. “We took the plunge and moved down here.” Now they feel right at home in the rolling Rogue Valley hills, tending to full-term and hybrid greenhouse gardens, living among the trees and their transitioning harvest-time colors, producing flowers that earn hard-won respect among the region’s Cannabis connoisseurs.
CREATING A CANNA-SANCTUARY
After making their home in the Rogue, the Cassidys quickly grew their farm family. Not with people, mind you, but with friends that were a bit, well, furrier. “It just kind of happened,” Allie said. “It all started because we wanted alpacas for our compost.” In short, TKO has cultivated a second life as an animal rescue sanctuary, all because they wanted alpaca fur. The oil-rich fur combines with the other organic matter generated by the farm to create nutrient-rich compost. The Cassidys came across a sanctuary in Jacksonville that was housing some rescued alpacas, and decided to take some home. “We only wanted one or two, and we ended up leaving with all eight of them,” Allie said. “They totally play a role in everything we do. They contribute to our compost, they mow down our fields.”

The farm crew will collect pollen and keep clones for breeding the best of the best, so TKO can keep ahead of the curve on bringing new strains to market. They’re currently working through some killer phenos. On our visit, we were blown away by a sweetly spiced Jaeger, sticky Superglue, and an absolutely stunning Blue City Cookies (White Tahoe Cookies x Blue City Diesel), with dark leaves and bright purplish-pink pistils. When you ask Charlie what he’s most excited for, his face lights up and he immediately mentions the Unicorn Piss — ZOZ BX Skittlez crossed with Cat Piss. CULTIVATING THE FUTURE Though they still hang their hats on THCrich Cannabis, the crew at TKO Reserve jumped into the CBD-rich hemp flower game in 2018. They own multiple hemp farms in multiple states, and currently farm 8:1 hemp to Cannabis on their home farm in the Rogue Valley. But Charlie doesn’t see that as the future of TKO. “We’re just practicing for THC on a large scale,” he said while walking the rows of beautiful full-term THC-rich genetics that make TKO famous.

estled among the tall and craggy tree-lined hills in a corner of Jackson County called Sam’s Valley, TH3 Farms looks unassuming at first glance. No massive fields of 15-foot plants — No rows of industrial hybrid greenhouses paired with pastoral farmhouses.
PLANT EXPANSION
If you stumble across Rick Zimmermann’s farm during Fall, you’ll find an operation bracing itself for growth. As a former head shop owner, glass blower and indoor cultivator, Zimmermann is no stranger to the Cannabis industry. He knows what it takes to make the dream work. He and his partners scaled from 525 to 800 plants this year, driving in 900 T-posts in three days with a crew of four people, and did so with no outside help. Zimmermann passes the credit to his team. “We have a great crew,” Zimmermann said. “That’s number one. We couldn’t do any of this without them.” >> TH3 FARMS PG. 50

SINGULAR FOCUS
Most of the year, that crew’s composed of family members and business partners - about nine people total. During harvest, the farm buzzes with 22 crew members moving with purpose among mobile units, nearly 30,000 square feet of full-term outdoor Cannabis, and one hybrid greenhouse.
oregonlEAF.COM
We got a feel for the team when, during our visit, they all came back from lunch at the same time. In a swift moment, the entire farm went from quiet and empty to buzzing with harvest activity. The crew was hustling, stripping stalks and separating out the flower-grade material. Interestingly enough, you won’t find their hard work represented in jars of TH3 flower on your dispensary shelf. That’s because the farm has a singular, laser-focused vision. Nearly all of TH3’s expected flower harvest is destined for pre-rolls. Dubbed the Gemstone Collection, TH3’s packaged joints come in four flower-only varieties, catering to desired effects: Emerald (sativa), Sapphire (hybrid), Ruby (indica), and Diamond (premium indica). “We’re more about the feeling,” Zimmermann said. “Emerald green means go. Blue means chill. Red means stop.”
NOV. 2019
Each joint is weighed within a 0.02g tolerance for error, in order to make sure each customer gets exactly what they’re paying for. As for the strains that go into each package, Zimmermann says it’s a trade secret. It wouldn’t be far off to say that TH3 might take offense should anyone reveal the identity of their strains, but they were good-natured when our crew guessed a couple on the nose - of course, promising to keep their identities a secret. TH3 grows those secret strains directly in native soil amended with worm teas to showcase the terroir - or unique character - of the region, and is beginning to employ drip irrigation enhanced with enzymes in order to make more efficient use of natural resources. For Zimmermann, it’s all about finding efficiencies and opportunities for continuous improvement and growth. The next project will be the construction of 100 food-grade drying and handling units. It’s a considerable project to undertake during harvest. But for Zimmermann, it all comes back to his team. He knows they’re up to the challenge. After all, many of them are family. “My dad does all of our Metrc work,” he said. “My wife is down there with a winter coat on, trimming. If I were trying to wear all the hats, it wouldn’t work.” TH3FARMS.COM | @TH3FARMS

Rolen Stone Farms carefully acquired seeds from Oni Seed Co, Symbiotic Genetics, Seed Junky Genetics, Archive Seedbank, and Rentless Genetics to create their astounding sungrown flower and connoisseur concentrates. Their attention to detail really goes a long way when it comes to their pheno hunts. During our visit, we were able to check out two different phenotypes of Wedding Crasher (Wedding Cake x Purple Punch) bred by Symbiotic Genetics. P
icturesquely situated between two wineries in Oregon’s beautiful Rogue Valley lies one of the most impressive Cannabis growing operations we’ve come across to date. Despite there being well over 1,000 production licenses issued to hundreds of farms across the state, Urban Pharms is truly a uniquely scaled and professional operation, headed by owner Seth Marsh and Grow Operations Manager Carsen Maciag. While Urban Pharms currently operates a single tier 2 license at their Medford property, the additional infrastructure and how they’ve constructed the grow makes the operation feel significantly larger. Upon our arrival, we were greeted by the farm’s full-time security guard, who manages the flow of workers and visitors into and out of the licensed portion of the facilities each day. We furnished IDs and made our way onto the farm. As we approached the field, a frenzy of activity unfolded before us. Dozens of laborers, mostly seasonal labor, were harvesting, bucking, big leafing and hanging plants as fast as they could. With an ant-like flow, plants were being cut and driven over to big tables, where teams of workers would then buck down branches, remove the water leaf, and stack the flowers in bins. Once a bin was filled, it was snatched up and transported to Urban Pharms’ brand new drying facilities, where they were then emptied and hung onto one of dozens of large metal racks suspended from the ceiling of each room. With five rooms in total capable of drying a staggering 40,000 pounds of freshly harvested Cannabis, Urban Pharms’ new drying facilities are decked out and ready for scale. With plans to add a second tier 2 license on an adjacent plot next year, they’ll need every square inch of the 8,000 square feet of drying space they added this year to pull off a successful harvest. Each 360 gallon pot has been expertly placed so that afternoon and evening shadows don’t fall on neighboring plants, and each is receiving maximum sunlight. About 70% of the field came from clones taken off of the team’s collection of tried and true mother plants. The other 30% of the field was planted from seed, a mix of new and highly sought after varietals like Symbiotic Genetics’ Mimosa, Hermetic Genetics’ Key Lime Poison and Sour Dough Kush, and Blueberry Headband from Humboldt Seed Organization. All in, the team grew about 70 different varieties this season, with about 10 being tried and true Rogue Valley favorites and classics like SFV OG and Critical Mass, and 60 being new trials.
THE PLANTS CLEARLY LOVE THEIR HOMES, AS THESE ARE SOME OF THE LARGEST LADIES WE’VE ENCOUNTERED ANYWHERE NOV. 2019
“Each variety or even specific phenos have different watering and fertilizer needs, as well as different finishing times. Being blind to these factors can make crop planning and fertilizing a bit difficult. But like most growers, we’re constantly on the hunt for new and better genetics - and the outcome can usually yield two to three great new production strains, like the Key Lime Poison,” Marsh said as we walked through the seemingly endless field. To avoid being blindsided by the unknown, the team samples and tests both soil and tissue culture weekly.
SC ALING WITH EXPERIENCE
Urban Pharms uses an all peat medium combined with in-house mixed fertilizers, plus a full irrigation system helping them deliver each plant exactly what it needs nutrient and water wise. With Marsh’s years of experience growing indoor, he’s adopted techniques from that world and implemented a hydroponic-style approach, outdoor. This allows them to have direct control over the growth of each plant and produce ultra high-grade product in a full sun environment. Thanks to Oregon’s medical program, Marsh and Urban Pharms had a head start developing infrastructure that works not only for a growing business, but for its staff as well. “We now provide industry training, healthcare and retirement plans to our employees. We also pride ourselves as being one of the higher paying Cannabis farms in the region. This has made it easier to find more talented and professional employees, and in turn results in smoother operations,” explained Marsh. Backed by a seasoned and diversely experienced staff, Urban Pharms is prepared to scale up this coming year with additional greenhouses and expanded outdoor canopy space at their current grow in Southern Oregon, as well as with production licenses for California’s emerging market. Urban Pharms products are distributed exclusively through The Sweet Life distribution company and can be found at finer dispensaries across Oregon. With nationwide legalization on the horizon, we are excited to see where this Oregon born-and-raised business winds up in a few years time. URBANPHARMS.COM | @URBAN_PHARMS

INFUSED THANKSGIVING NOV. 2019
THREE INFUSED SAUCES, UNLIMITED POSSIBILITIES. . . Thanksgiving is approaching, and it’s time to start meal planning. You may be a traditionalist, or have some unusual additions to the meal, but I’m guessing that at least one of these three sauces could make it into your holiday menu this year. Adding Cannabis to the main attraction, be it the turkey or the pumpkin pie, makes it an adults only option - and that’s just not fair. So, my solution is to infuse the sauces and have your guests take charge of their own Cannabis consumption. Sauce on the side, pour at your own risk. Happy Thanksgiving from Laurie and MaryJane. #Dontfeartheedible
BERRY SAUCE Makes 9 servings
1 lb raspberries, rinsed ¼ cup honey 2 tablespoons canna-coconut oil ½ cup orange juice 2 teaspoons cornstarch Pinch salt 1. In a small saucepan, combine the berries with the honey and canna-oil and heat on warm setting. 2. In a small bowl, combine the orange juice with the cornstarch. Stir to mix. Add the cornstarch to the berries and stir until the mixture begins to thicken (sauce will continue to thicken as it cools). Stir in the salt. 3. Remove from heat and pour into gravy boat, small pitcher, or vessel of choice.
CUSTARD SAUCE Makes 9 servings
2 egg yolks 2 tablespoons sugar 2 tablespoons canna-butter 1 1/4 cups whole milk 1 teaspoon vanilla Pinch of nutmeg 1. In a medium saucepan, whisk egg yolks, sugar and canna-butter until well mixed. Whisk in the milk. The mixture should not bubble, and it should be thick enough to coat the back of a spoon. 2. Remove from heat, add the vanilla and pinch of nutmeg. 3. Place the pan over low heat and cook, stirring frequently until thickened, about 15 minutes. Stir constantly for the final five minutes. Drizzle sauce over pumpkin pie or fave desserts.
CARAMEL SAUCE
Infused caramel sauce is a dream topping for ice cream, drizzling over waffles or pancakes, and for apple dipping. You will not believe how good this is. Makes 9 servings
1 cup brown sugar ½ cup half-and-half 2 tablespoons butter 2 tablespoons cannabutter Pinch of salt 2 teaspoons vanilla extract 1. In a medium saucepan, mix the brown sugar, half-and-half, butters and salt. 2. Over low heat, stir the mixture for about 5-7 minutes. The sauce will get thicker. 3. Once the sauce has thickened, remove from the heat and stir in the vanilla.

The candy came packaged in a small plastic envelope and appeared to be in the shape of an arrowhead. I ingested the entire gummy and was impressed with the taste, as there was no hint of any residual Cannabis flavor. The sweetness of the watermelon in particular works well to create a balance of flavors. After about 45 minutes I began to feel some of the subtle effects. My mood and appetite were noticeably elevated as I went straight for the frozen pizza in my freezer. For me, this edible had more of an energetic effect than a lot of other edibles I’ve tried, which was a welcome change, as I tend to stray away from certain edibles for that reason. White Label Extracts and Applegate River Roots have collaborated on numerous terpene rich sauces, live resins and pull n’ snaps, including this Peach Cheesewreck live resin. Opening the jar reveals strong aromas of lemon and grapefruit, with a hint of musk on the end. The consistency is almost entirely sauce, except for a thin layer of micro-sized THCa crystals at the bottom of the jar. Each dab is flavorful, yet slightly expansive due to the high level of terpenes. Notes of peach, mango custard and grapefruit zest danced around my palate. The effects are rather cerebral and euphoric, making this strain a great option to smoke during the day or before listening to some live music. With harvest season upon us, I can’t wait to see what other collaborations are coming down the line from White Label and Applegate River Roots. WH ITELABE LE XTRACTS.NE T @WH ITELABE L_E XTRACTS

TOPICAL OF THE MONTH
SuperTrees Hemp Balm boasts 500mg of CBD per one-ounce tin for only $30. This topical is one of the best “bang for your buck” deals that delivers a strong dose of CBD without an outrageous price tag. PACKAGING
The topical comes in a simple tin container with a relatively plain label. That said, I’m always excited to review products with zero single-use plastics and minimal packaging. AROMA
Upon first whiff there are major eucalyptus notes. There are small hints of floral, like lavender and chamomile, but this balm is mint heavy. The aroma itself isn’t strong at all, and smells more like a fragrance-free product. So if you aren’t into overly fragrant topicals, I would recommend this one. CONSISTENCY
70
The weather is cooling off fast in Oregon, and this balm is hard to the touch and doesn’t give easily. If possible, I recommend rubbing a knuckle into the surface to loosen up the balm and soften the texture before you apply it to where you need it. APPLICATION
SuperTrees hemp balm is easy on the hands, but as flu season moves in, I’ve found it works wonders for raw nostrils from a cold with a runny nose. I applied a small amount around my nostrils and upper lip, and after a few applications, it reduced the redness from constant tissue use and helped moisturize my skin to prevent chapping.

EFFECTS
As the brutal cold season moves in, hemp balms like this are wonderful for dry skin. 500mg of CBD per container helps reduce inflammation and keeps your skin soft and supple. Although I’m not a huge fan of the smell, topical users who don’t like overly fragrant balms would definitely appreciate the subdued aroma. Topicals are one of the most underrated Cannabis products that users sometimes avoid due to the cost (they often start from $40 on up), but SuperTrees gives Oregonians a wider access point by keeping the cost down. tannins & terpenes
OUR SUMMER CLOTHES have taken shelter in the closet for the year, replaced by sweaters, dark beer, and space heaters. Harvest is a time for feasting and celebration, a season for supping on the bounty of our sunshine haymaking. A time to bring each other close against the cold, and share food, drink, and good herb. It’s only fitting that our Harvest Issue installment of Tannins & Terpenes would focus on delicious treats suitable for harvest parties and Thanksgiving celebrations. Few wines offer a more perfect complement to a Thanksgiving feast than Oregon Pinot Noir, so we thought we’d put together a pairing that inspires readers to infuse their own Fall feast. With these two delicious, Oregon-grown treats, you’ll be ready for that Harry Potter marathon. TANNINS
2017 owen roe sharecropper wine co. oregon pinot noir $13.99 at New Seasons Market OwenRoe.com MANY OREGON PRODUCED Pinot Noir offerings bottle up the complexity of a full orchestra, featuring soaring top notes and rumbling bass, with arias and overtures. While this is not one of those first seat expressions, the Sharecropper’s Pinot Noir does what it sets out to do exceedingly well, especially for the price. The name is borrowed from the practice of a grape grower and winemaker splitting the profits on the sale of finished goods, rather than the farmer getting paid up front - a practice on which this wine label was built, and with which the Cannabis industry is more than familiar. The Sharecropper’s Pinot Noir offers a light bodied, easy-to-pair expression of the grape, with earthy dried fruit and cherry cola aromas previewing an easy sip. A whisper of residual sweetness makes this a perfect counterpoint to Thanksgiving or any feast, particularly those during the months ahead, when we gather friends and family into hearth-warmed spaces to revel away the cold.

TERPENES
portland oven cannaghee $10 at Kind Heart Collective PortlandOven.com GUMMIES ARE GREAT, but with Halloween in the rearview and harvest feasts growing larger on the horizon, you may want an edible with weight. Something savory, maybe a little rich. Portland Oven’s CannaGhee lets you decide how you want to dose in the moment. Ghee is a type of clarified butter that has the milk solids removed, and while it’s not an ideal butter replacement in cooking applications, it can be added to just about anything with ease. Try melting it into your stuffing, spread it over some roasted squash, or slather it over a slice of field roast or turkey. The Lemon Meringue sativa variety features an overwhelming terpene profile worthy of the name, so keep that in mind if you’re buying for a specific use. Check out the variety of strains featured on the company’s site, and make sure to call ahead to your favorite shop to make sure the one you want is in stock. (Lemon Meringue Sativa, 43mg THC/jar)
*Oregon Leaf Disclaimer* Anytime you are mixing two substances of any kind, you need to be extra vigilant of the effects and plan accordingly. We strongly recommend conducting pairings with others in a safe and private space in small quantities. Always make sure you can get home safely without jeopardizing yourself or others.

I
hit the gas on the Dabstar wrapped Tahoe, ripping around a lumbering semi, the 8x5 trailer snapping into line behind us. Jessica and I had refurbished it into a tiny clandestine camper the summer before. Bamboo floors, cedar tongue and groove walls, she was a rolling hotel room complete with a 55 inch curved screen TV and a battery bank. She was built for trips like this and we were excited to get her out.

It was harvest season on the West Coast and the happy sense of optimism that comes with with it pervaded the car. Harvest was the culmination of months of hard work and for Cannabis farmers, a time when they could breathe a little easier knowing their crop had made it past cops and rippers, which could be as bad as russet mites for those still growing off the beaten path cleared by so-called legalization. For some, legalization was starting to look more
and more like regulation and many of the farmers - particularly in the fertile Oregon valleys - wanted nothing to do with it. Our first stop was just outside Portland at the home of one Patrick Emerson. Pat was an old friend and industry buddy that had grown to become family, and these harvest trips had become somewhat of a tradition between us. A smiling Pat was waiting with his bags packed
THE LAST OF A DYING BREED, THE BLACK MARKET GROWERS OF THE WEST COAST HAD PAVED THE WAY FOR THE MEGA-FARMS DOTTING THE HILLS TODAY, PRESERVING AMONG MANY THINGS, THE GENETIC HISTORY AND POTENTIAL OF THE PLANT ITSELF. when I walked in the front door. “Dabs?” he asked, as he held up a hot rig in one hand and dabber full of shatter in the other. A quick sesh and we were out the door to meet up with The Leaf crew. I grinned when Pat told me where our first stop would be. An old friend was set up in the hills outside of Medford running a black market grow on 60 acres. The last of a dying breed, the black market growers of the West Coast had paved the way for the mega-farms dotting the hills today, preserving among many things, the genetic history and potential of the plant itself. We headed up a winding mountain road which eventually gave way to a small dirt road. Our caravan stopped abruptly at a metal gate with a heavy lock hanging from an oversized chain. Pat did his best to keep up as we wound our way past the gate and deeper into the woods on the homemade road. As we broke free from the tree line, a familiar tint of green caught my eye ahead. Embanked by large
chunks of timber was a long, thin stretch of Cannabis plants in full flower, the fall colors greeting us as we entered the open valley. We exchanged war stories over dabs and bong hits, burning up what little bit of sun we had left before saying our goodbyes and heading off once again to meet up with The Leaf crew. Rising early the next morning we detached the trailer and assembled behind the bus en route for TKO farms, a working farm and licensed Cannabis grow ran by Allie and Charlie Cassidy. Allie was an old friend and one time Dabstar photographer, and I was excited to see the farm take off. The crew made its way across the fields of hemp, which seemed to dot the scenery everywhere you go in southern Oregon these days, towards a group of llamas and two giant pigs which were grazing nearby. We hit three more farms that day as we wound our way through Applegate, including TH3 farms, whose stunning crop of outdoor was insanely being turned into prerolls. A glut of non-exportable Cannabis had driven down the value of weed to the point that it was more valuable to grind it all up and sell it as joints. I shook my head as I heard the news. Humblebee Farms sprawled out over the remnants of an old buffalo ranch, took up the hillside as far as the eye could see with Cannabis strains manipulated to meet the requirements of hemp - the end result was smokable hemp that looked and smelled almost exactly like its THC counterpart. The landscape of Cannabis in the valley was certainly changing. Rolen Stone rounded off day two and I was stoked
to see some green giants peeking over the fence as we pulled up. This time it was me who jumped out to take pictures, fumbling with my phone for a live broadcast. Drinks and sushi closed out the day and we hit the rack hard, passing out to The Godfather blaring inside the not so clandestine camper. After a slower than usual start and some sketchy talk about green gel tabs in the morning, we were off to Urban Pharms. As we arrived, I could see why they saved it for last. More akin to an apple orchard, the sprawling expanse of neatly manicured tree-sized plants filled the horizon. Owner and founder Spencer introduced us to the trim team before leading us down into the rows of monster plants. “Each one is four plants planted together,” he confessed. It didn’t matter, each one must have had over 100 kolas on it. Tiny street signs bearing names like “Snow Land” and “Field of Dreams” served as navigational aides through the massive expanse. As we hugged out our goodbyes with The Leaf crew and hit the road bound for Washington, I was struck by just how much things had changed in the last 10 years. Cannabis, more than ever, was becoming a true commodity. What that meant for the farmers in the hills or the shop owners advertising three dollar grams, only time would tell. But one thing was for certain, nothing would ever be the same again...

We all know what this means, right? But in case you’ve been held hostage in a dental office waiting room for the past decade, tortured with easy listening music and nine-month-old gossip magazines, it’s an acronym for Laughing My Fucking Ass Off. Which implies that someone is overcome with a howling expression of jubilation. And this reflex is so genuine that it goes beyond the ability to contain one’s composure. This is not a giggle, this is not a smirk - this is a response to something that is so inherently funny that it results in the physical release of happiness, expressed without restraint. The person is not just laughing. They are laughing hysterically. However, he or she who is using this language - almost always through texting - is only chuckling. They are not laughing hysterically at all. They are pretending to do so by channeling their emotions into contemporary terminology that seemingly does it for them, while the actual expression of this joy, whatever level it is, is still contained within their mind and body. Kind of like being held captive in a dental office. Imagine standing in front of someone and telling them that you are laughing your fucking ass off. They would say, “No you aren’t.” The reply would be, “Right, but I think it’s really funny.” And the other person would say, “Then why aren’t you laughing?” Yet, when an individual sends this expression through their mobile device, their intent is to have us believe they are a fun-loving, outgoing friend who drinks up life with a reckless sense of humor. Realistically, however, this person spends an average of 8-12 hours a day being entertained though a digital screen, with very little to no reaction at all. Just because you say something doesn’t make it true. BTW, Cannabis is my BFF.
