across the amazing Pacific Northwest! I hope you’ve gotten a chance to enjoy the outdoors, the clean air and water we all cherish, and the opportunity to share time with loved ones. For me, the summer is always like a blink and it’s gone, but always full of good memories. Here’s to a warm and festive September, and hopefully as fall settles in, our national mindset can take a big breath of chill. And hopefully a toke. What really stands out to me from this summer is our country’s battle against hate. So I chose to use this space to share my thoughts, instead of talking about how great this issue is [don’t worry, it’s awesome]. So here are my two cents: Hatred, racism and bigotry have no place in our country, and as a Cannabis community we need to be vocal about social injustice. Anyone who has smoked pot prior to legalization knows what it feels like to live in fear for a choice. Those being targeted by hate groups don’t have the luxury of choosing their skin color, sexual identity or religion the way we chose to smoke pot before it was legal. The Cannabis community is diverse and covers all walks of life, and we can send a message to the world by leading with love — Cannabis is safer than hate. This message also works against prohibitionists. Earlier in the month, I was told that I was endangering families smoking a bowl in a music and bar district in Bellingham, Wash., while others around smoked cigarettes and drank heavily. A simple smile, a peaceful offering of information, and a parting message of “marijuana is safer” can be enough to change a mind, and a choice that might lead someone to pick up a pipe and let go of fear, hatred or misinformation. Further, I want to state my belief that using the first amendment defense to spread messages of hate is not acceptable in our democratic society. As an independent publisher, I have followed the free speech arguments carefully, and have come to a simple conclusion. We must be accountable for our words as well as our actions, and as a country we need to demand this from our citizens and our leaders. We must not let hatred win. Since Cannabis first came into my life, I have always believed it had the power to change the world. And this is a direct way for us as users of a safer plant to spread truth, light and as Bob Marley said, an herb “for the healing of the nation.” Thanks for reading the Leaf, and sharing our hard work with those who need enlightenment about the plant we all love. —Wes Abney

Trump Calls New Hampshire A ‘Drug-Infested Den’ Both of New Hampshire’s U.S. Senators lashed out at Donald Trump on Aug. 3 after it was revealed that Trump had called the Granite State “a drug-infested den” during a telephone call with the president of Mexico. “I won New Hampshire because New Hampshire is a drug-infested den,” Trump said to Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto, reports Greg Miller at The Washington Post. The Post got transcripts of Trump’s calls to several world leaders. Sen. Jeanne Shaheen and Sen. Maggie Hassan, both Democrats, were angered at Trump’s boorish characterization of the opioid crisis in
their state. Sen. Hassan called Trump’s comments “disgusting,” reports the BBC. “@realDonaldTrump’s comments about New Hampshire are disgusting. As he knows, NH and states across America have a substance misuse crisis,” Hassan wrote on Twitter. “Instead of insulting people in the throes of addiction, @POTUS needs to work across party lines to actually stem the tide of this crisis,” Hassan wrote. Republican Governor Chris Sununu quickly responded. He issued a statement simply saying, “Mr. Trump is wrong. It’s disappointing his mischaracterization of this epidemic ignores the great things this state has to offer.”
Oregon Marijuana Demand SkyrocketED For Solar Eclipse Oregonians had one of the best views of the recent total solar eclipse on Aug. 21. About a million people visited the state in order to view it — and it seems many of them wanted to buy legal weed during their visits. Local news stations reported Oregon Cannabis dispensaries saw a spike in sales ahead of the eclipse. “Tourism already to Oregon, plus an eclipse, is doubling up,” Mike Drevecky, an employee at the Little Amsterdam Wellness Center in Portland, told The News Review. “And that means customers are doubling in our doors. I mean, we’re swamped this morning alone.”

Weedmaps Brings Pro-Cannabis Billboards To Michigan Weedmaps, the “where to find marijuana” app, is bringing pro-Cannabis billboards to Michigan during an ongoing petition drive trying to put marijuana legalization on the 2018 state ballot. The “technology and marijuana discovery service,” based in California, is buying 22 pro-pot billboards in the Lansing area, 12 more in Ann Arbor and six in Metro Detroit as part of its campaign, also targeting six other states plus Canada, reports The Detroit News. The billboards feature statistics showing unchanged youth use, increased tax revenue, theft reductions and other positive developments in states that have already legalized. Five different versions
are running in Michigan, which is currently creating and implementing new medical marijuana rules. Weedmaps says the goal is “to provide communities with credible, verifiable facts about the benefits of legal marijuana.” “As Michigan residents consider a marijuana legalization petition, and changes to dispensary regulatory requirements go into effect throughout the state, there is a lot of marijuana misinformation out there,” a Weedmaps spokesman told The News. “So we think it’s important to share and talk about the benefits, underpinned by research, regarding marijuana. We want Michiganders to be informed.”

Highlighting amazing Cannabis pioneers who helped pave the way to greater herbal acceptance.
Kevin Smith Maverick filmmaker, actor, author and comic book writer Kevin Smith is best known for his hit movies Clerks, Mallrats, Chasing Amy and Jersey Girl. He’s instantly recognizable as the iconic character Silent Bob that he played in many of his films.
Since so much of his work features characters who use Cannabis, it may surprise you to know that he didn’t start consuming the plant until 2009. Smith told MTV in 2011 that he credits Seth Rogen (whom he worked with on the film “Zack and Miri Make a Porno”) with being the person who made him into a “stoner.” Smith said that he and Rogen smoked weed in the editing room while cutting the movie, and that it helped with creativity and getting “fear” out of the equation when it came to making creative decisions. In the interview, he credits Cannabis with aiding his productivity. Shortly after this interview, he told Thrillist that “I can count on one hand the amount of times I smoked weed from birth to age 38. At age 38, I worked with Seth Rogen. That changed everything. I was like, ‘this guy is a multitasker. He can do a zillion things at once and he is fucking blazed all the time. He gets along with everybody and he has got no stress in his life.’ The dude is just a zen pool of calm.” Smith also talked about how Cannabis has been medicinally beneficial to him: “I don’t drink. Some people have booze. Some people have medications. I don’t have any of that shit, but weed allows me to get out of my own fucking head and out of my ass and relate to people better.” Fortunately, that’s not where this story ends for Smith. Like your friends here at Oregon Leaf, Smith is also on a mission to normalize Cannabis for the mainstream. “I am glad that I became a stoner late in life. Age 38. I was never a fucking stoner prior to age 38. Now, I am a fucking born-again stoner. Weed is not a ‘thing,’ really. It is not. Once Colorado and Washington were legal, everybody is like, ‘oh, it is not that big a deal.’ When I was a kid, it was like, ‘fucking just say no, and it’s evil, and, fucking, it will lead to crack cocaine,’ and shit.” In 2013, shortly after early legalization in Colorado and Washington, Smith appeared on Canadian television in Toronto on a breakfast show touting his newest film “Yoga Hosers.” The interviewer posed the question, “what’s the secret of how you get things done?” With a straight face and clear language, Smith told the host, “well, I’m a huge stoner … but a productive one.” He noted that he even likes to wake and bake and regularly enjoys a “THC-managed day.”
SOME PEOPLE HAVE BOOZE. SOME PEOPLE HAVE MEDICATIONS. I DON’T HAVE ANY OF THAT SHIT, BUT WEED ALLOWS ME TO GET OUT OF MY OWN FUCKING HEAD AND OUT OF MY ASS AND RELATE TO PEOPLE BETTER.”
The one-of-a-kind film director and iconic Silent Bob actor is not so quiet about how Cannabis helps his productivity

“I’m still in love with smoking flower more than I am with dabbing. I love the ritual of grabbing your favorite bud, grinding it up and either rolling up a joint or just dropping it in some nice glass.”
WHEN DID YOU FIRST EXPERIENCE CANNABIS? I first tried it was when I was on a Senior graduation trip to the Bahamas. The experience was social, silly and fun! We had a group of about seven people that partook in the Cannabis adventure and afterwards went immediately to the pool and slides as we were feeling confined to our hotel room and a little worried the smell would get us in big trouble. It was a great experience and it got me more interested and involved in the consumption of Cannabis.
HOW DO YOU HELP CUSTOMERS FIND THE BEST CANNABIS OR PRODUCTS FOR THEM?
HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN IN THE CANNABIS INDUSTRY AND WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PART OF THE JOB?
Finding the right strains for customers or patients is generally pretty easy, although, being that we all have a different physical makeup some things will work better than others. The main thing I recommend to new budtenders is to just shut up and listen to the person in front of you. Let them tell you what they are dealing with. Ask questions! The more information you can get, the better you are going to be at recommending them a product that will assist them in their time of need.
I have been a budtender for over four years in Portland. I find that being a budtender is much more rewarding than any job I have had in the past. I pride myself on my knowledge of strains, their lineage, terpene profiles and grow styles. This, in my opinion, makes for great discussion when assisting patients and customers on a daily basis. Nothing feels better than having a customer come back and tell me the products that were suggested to them gave them the assistance or the relief they are looking for.
WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE METHOD OF CONSUMPTION? I’m still in love with smoking flower more than I am with dabbing. I love the ritual of grabbing your favorite bud, grinding it up and either rolling up a joint or just dropping it in some nice glass.
WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE CANNABIS STRAINS AND EFFECTS? My favorite Cannabis strain is SFV OG. I love the flavor and psychoactive effect this strain delivers. It’s an older strain in regards to its background and lineage, but it does more for me than most of the new fun crosses that growers are coming up with these days. This strain also has my favorite terpene profile: super heavy ocean grown flavor with heavy notes of alpha-Pinene and Caryophyllene.
“I pride myself on my knowledge of strains, their lineage, terpene profiles...”

WHAT MAKES YOUR SHOP’S APPROACH DIFFERENT?
budtender of the month
RICKY BURBY
As storefronts have popped up around the state over the past year, the Cannabis retail industry is slowly but surely figuring out what pleases customers the most. The budtender, while a relatively new profession in the world, is surely the most important part of the store experience with Cannabis. Our Budtender of the Month this time around is one of the most knowledgeable that we’ve encountered. Ricky Burby knows Cannabis inside and out, but beyond that, he knows how to speak to both novices and experts about the plant in a way that’s both welcoming and enlightening.
Listening. Listening. Listening. We want to make sure when you leave MindRite, you have exactly what you are looking for or something close to it. We have a staff of educated and accommodating individuals. In most cases, when you visit you will get assistance from more than one person while you’re here. We offer a request list for anyone that comes in the shop looking for something we don’t have. WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR HOBBIES/INTERESTS OUTSIDE OF THE CANNABIS INDUSTRY? I love the outdoors. Anything around a body of water is ideal. Cliff jumping and diving off rocks is pretty much my favorite thing to do when the summer hits. I have been mindrite pdx athletic since I was a kid 1780 NW Marshall St and played soccer my whole MindRitePDX.com life, and I’m a huge Timbers fan! I love spending time with my family. Nothing compares to playing with my niece and nephews.

Stefani Malott TREATING RHEUMATOID ARTHRITIS WITH THE USE OF CANNABIS

tefani Malott was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) when she was twelve years old. Malott was immediately put on a number of medications, which routinely caused severe adverse reactions. She was on things like Prednisone because doctors use steroids to calm inflammation and reduce pain. Malott took Methotrexate (a chemotherapy agent) for fifteen years until she became poisoned by the drug. Her eyes and skin turned yellow, and the vomiting and abdominal pain became very severe. “I used Methotrexate throughout my college years, but finally my body couldn’t take it anymore. I called my doctor and explained what was happening and stopped my use immediately. I’ve dealt with adverse reactions from all forms of treatment, except Cannabis. With Cannabis, I’ve never had bad reactions or side effects.” Malott said. Rheumatoid arthritis is an incredibly painful autoimmune disease - which means it doesn’t go away. Treatment remains constant and working to reduce inflammation is vital to quality of life. I asked Malott how she uses Cannabis to treat RA daily. “Unfortunately, I deal with polyarticular rheumatoid arthritis which means the smallest, tiniest joints down to my

If you need flower and you have an autoimmune disease, heavy metals from synthetic nutrients will affect your body. That’s why I work with living soil - not bottled nutrients.” Malott never took it seriously as a treatment option until 2013, though she has smoked for 20 years. I always noticed I felt better, but I didn’t understand the science behind it. It wasn’t until about four years ago, I started researching on Pub Med and I found a few different articles on dosing. When I learned Cannabis was a natural TNF inhibitor, and took it to my doctor and they were supportive. I refused to get my card for many years because I was afraid of losing my job. Four years ago I started discovering what doses work for me. I get through my day with a CBD patch. Around 7PM I vape flower and take an edible around 9PM. I make my own 5mg sugar and gluten free edibles to help my body relax when I am lying down, so I can get comfortable before bed. You don’t need much to find relief in my experience.” Malott said. For people dealing with RA, Malott suggests starting with a high CBD or one-to-one (THC/CBD) patch if you are nervous about smoking. She advised trying the Synergy Skin Works Patches, available from a variety of local dispensaries. “I would highly recommend people give the transdermal patches a chance. I know they are expensive, but cut them in half to make it last longer to start. Transdermals are discreet, nobody sees it and nothing is going through your stomach - so it won’t irritate the GI tract. The dosing is a slow release and they don’t overwhelm. High CBD controls my inflammation. With RA, the more inflammation, the more pain I deal with.” Dealing with RA is a constant, painful battle and Malott believes reducing inflammation is key to extended relief. Malott makes her own coconut oil Cannabis salve she uses on her hands and feet for relief during busy days. She also recommends using a PAX vaporizer or volcano, because it isn’t as harsh. EVANS CREEK FARMS Paying careful attention yields small-batch quality
E
vans Creek Farms is an organic, Clean Green-certified Cannabis farm located in the foothills of Mt. Hood. Dan, the owner and head cultivator, is dedicated to providing clean and carefully cultivated Cannabis to Oregon consumers. And he likes his privacy. One vegetative room and two small flower rooms make up the entirety of this licensed grow. Each plant in the flower rooms is connected to a drip watering system installed by himself that can fully water each room in under three minutes. The nutrients are mixed on spot and dumped into a tank for dispersion of the feed. While we chatted for a bit, Dan was carefully trimming up his latest harvest of 707 Headband. Each snip was made with care and consideration, which clearly shines through in the end. The result of extremely well handled buds is a more visual experience with each strain. The trichome heads are vivid and pop out at you — not crushed or smoothed over roughly. Dan’s background is in installing irrigation systems for large-scale farms including many fruit orchards in the area, so setting up his irrigation for his licensed grow came easily. The plants are OMRI listed “BioBizz” in organic amended soil. The cultivation of organic Cannabis without the use of systemic pesticides or fungicides is essential to providing Oregon consumers with trustworthy and clean Cannabis. Another quality control aspect that stood out to me was the trim and handling of each nug. No one was hacking away at buds nonchalantly hoping they would trim a sugar leaf in the midst of mutilating trichome heads. Evans Creek Farms LLC was started in 2012, a few years before recreational was passed in Oregon. Dan has grown for 22 years and gets additional organic gardening experience from being a produce grower for many years, cultivating tomatoes, kale, broccoli and peppers, which helped to shape his knowledge on many aspects of soil diversity and biology. Cherry Pie, Nepalese Kush and 707 Headband are the primary cultivars grown by Evans Creek Farms and available at select Bend, Pendleton, Hood River and Portland dispensaries.

Strains 4/5 PARADISE FOUND had a nice selection of
top shelf and budget strains available for the wide array of customers seen each day. The shop is beautifully laid out, with clean illuminated display cases that house all the strains. Clementine, Lemon Meringue, Black Lime Reserve and Cheesequake were a few of the cultivars available from vendors such as Avitas, Pistil Point and Greenway Ventures.

Edibles 4/5 THE EDIBLE SECTION offered up a nice variety of goodies, including medicated gummies, cookies, taffy, CBD espresso beans and even infused water. Each edible was neatly displayed in a glass case with the price, including tax, labeled on the package. It would be nice to see a larger selection of edible inventory, as many consumers have dietary restrictions and cannot ingest some of the ingredients used in those products.
Concentrates 4/5 THE DISPLAY CASE was filled to the brim
when we stopped by Paradise Found. We spotted Avitas CO2 cartridges, Hush BHO and one of the largest selections of strain-specific concentrates. Sidenote: the menu is mostly focused on vapor cartridges and less so dabbables. Price points were competitive thanks to the large inventory, allowing them to reduce pricing across the board.

The medicine room is spacious, well lit and inviting. Large display cases filled with rigs and accessories line the back wall with plans to add even more.
Overall 17/20 Paradise Found is a convenient stop, traveling into or out of the city, located just off the Halsey Street exit on I-84. Competitive price points and a knowledgeable friendly staff make this shop worth the drive.

The FIRST national trade show exclusively for marijuana retail and dispensary owners! WWW.THERADEXPO.COM 425-656-3621
NATIONAL MARIJUANA RETAIL & DISPENSARY EXPO
WHY ATTEND RADEXPO?
Most retail and dispensary owners don’t bother attending today’s cannabis trade shows for a variety of reasons: Admission prices are too high; many vendors are targeting cultivators; the public are allowed in; they lack focus; the same speakers talk about the same tired subjects at every event, etc.
RAD Expo is different. • RAD Expo is a business-only event that is 100% focused on the retail side of the industry.
• Attendance is free for licensed retail stores and dispensaries, as well as qualified applicants in states not yet issuing licenses. • All exhibitors will have products and services aimed at making retailers more profitable. • Our speakers will have serious retail and marketing experience. • It’s a national show featuring businesses from all over the U.S. • Portland, Oregon sits squarely in the middle of the biggest legal marijuana market in the world. name for the unique cross of Hell’s OG and Amnesia Haze. I remember first seeing this strain a few years ago at Bridge City Collective provided by an OMMP grow called Panda Farms. The buds are a dark green color and are covered in a semi dense layer of trichomes. Breaking them down for a joint released a sweet, lemon herbal profile that reminded me of chamomile tea. Sticky nugs make a grinder necessary before rolling a joint or packing a bowl. Smoking a few joints of this strain had me feeling alert and active. I found it to lean more heavily on the Amnesia Haze side. I would suggest this strain to those looking for an active, cerebral experience that is a great way to enhance summer hiking and swimming adventures.

anesha Smelser was an ordinary Oregon mom living in the Eugene area with her 7-year-old son. She worked in healthcare administration and was studying to become a nurse. In 2014, Smelser’s son Forrest was diagnosed with epilepsy. The Oregon native was not unfamiliar with Cannabis and began researching how to obtain the renowned Charlotte’s Web strain that most outside of the Cannabis industry have heard about in relation to CBD medicine for seizures. When she finally found the cultivar, it was incredibly expensive and she was forced to continue to look for a more affordable option. She continued on the hunt and was eventually introduced to a team member at TJ’s Gardens, a vertically integrated OLCC licensed Cannabis company owned by Travis Mackenzie, Jim Murphy and James Orpeza. TJ’s Gardens started as a labor of love for Travis’s wife, Cham. She had an accident that resulted in a brain injury and debilitating migraines. Her neurologist strongly suggested she try medical marijuana. When the TJ’s team got word of Smelser’s situation, they opted to take a step towards breaking the mold and removing the stigma from the Cannabis industry. TJ’s decided not only to help Forrest, but to treat him absolutely free of cost. After months of searching without successfully finding the right medicine for her son, Smelser was floored and beyond grateful. For six months after his first dose, Forrest was seizure-free. “Prior to TJ’s, I worked in healthcare administration, primarily geriatrics, home health and hospice,” Smelser said. “I was pursuing a nursing degree with the intention of becoming a hospice nurse. ARCANE REVELRY PDX CHEF CHRIS BAILEY PREPARES AN EXCLUSIVE CANNABIS-INFUSED DINNER SERIES using cannassentials flower
44/sept. 2017 FACEBOOK.COM/NWLEAF
T
his was my first Arcane Revelry experience and I didn’t
know what to expect. But it sounded intimate and it was held at Studio 13 where Portlandia was filmed. It seemed swanky enough so I made my way downtown with the company of the Oregon Leaf team to check it out. The entrance was lined with different vendors, both Cannabis and non-Cannabis brands. I sampled tasty snacks and chatted with the Cannassentials crew who provided flower for the event. Cannassentials is a Cannabis farm located in Eugene that specializes in organic craft Cannabis and regenerative practices. They use plant and fruit ferments to feed the crops—freeing their farm of bottle nutrients altogether. Not only did the farm provide a plethora of flower options for guests, but gave numerous phenotypes to sample from each strain. My choice strain of evening was the Polynesian Thin Mint, phenotype number one. It not only looked and smelled the part—perfectly ripened trichomes, well cured, quality trim job— but it tasted wonderful. Thin Mint is my favorite cookie, tempered with a Polynesian twist. The resulting smoke was incredibly smooth and rich with notes of sugar pastry and gas undertones. The dining room was dimly lit and each table was dressed with candles and Cannabis bouquets. The craft Cannabis was accompanied by a four-course dinner infused with local Oregon produce. Guests were gifted joints of Sour Diesel and Orange Haze to puff on while enjoying a vegan dinner by local Chef Chris Bailey. In the food industry, Baily wants to combat rampant food waste so he used bruised, or otherwise imperfect, tomatoes and berries for
I PAIRED THE FOURTH COURSE WITH A JOINT, FILLED WITH A MEDLEY OF CANNASSENTIALS FLOWER, WHICH PUT ME INTO A STATE OF BUZZY RELAXATION TO ROUND OUT THE NIGHT.
the red fruit gazpacho served in the first course. The plates used during the dinner were made of pressed palms leaves and entirely compostable. In fact, all of the Cannabis and the food served during Arcane Revelry was harvested sustainably. Every aspect of the dinner addressed the issue of sustainable practices across many neighboring industries beyond food production and Cannabis. But back to the food. The chickpea panisse with sautéed greens and aquafaba remoulade with roasted garlic was a favorite. The golden panisse was divine. It was comforting and nostalgic, which is tough to do with vegan food in my humble opinion. The sweet chickpea nugget was perfectly seasoned and balanced the sea of greens. The texture reminded me of a polenta square but with more density and packed with rich flavor without the grit. The summer vegetable ceviche with apricot leche de tigre was a close second! It was like a mild papaya salad without the spice. I enjoyed the vegan four-course dinner with friends and writers from the Cannabis community. Ashley Preece, founder of the Ethical Cannabis Alliance, was in attendance and spoke about how we need to focus on making sure Cannabis workers are treated fairly and ethically, beyond just looking at sustainable growing practices. Preece brought up the issue during her brief dinner speech about taking care of the Cannabis workforce and all the workers including garden hands, trimmers, budtenders who make this industry possible. I am looking forward to following more work from the Ethical Cannabis Alliance. We ended the evening with a rich boozy stone fruit, white chocolate creameux with cake crumbles dessert garnished with edible flowers. I paired the fourth course with a joint, filled with a medley of Cannassentials flower, which put me into a state of buzzy relaxation to round out the night. My Arcane Revelry dinner experience was exactly what our community needs: a safe space to celebrate Cannabis in the company of food and solid conversation. I had a blast getting to know more about my local growers and chefs. It was also humbling being in the same room with women and men who work every day to make our Cannabis community in Oregon a vibrant place. I would highly recommend attending an Arcane Revelry dinner to an industry insider or a curious enthusiast looking to experience a socially conscious Cannabis dinner. Per container is one of the first medicated drink mixers to enter the recreational market. The mixer comes in a few different flavors and can be poured into any drink, hot or cold. I tried the lemon mint flavor and chose to pour it into a glass of 7UP. I could easily taste the Cannabis backed by a cough medicine taste. The syrup sat at the bottom of the glass so it required stirring with each sip. That said, the effects are very strong and I felt medicated within 20 minutes of ingesting. The sugarfree syrups are a safe option for those with diabetes or people watching their glycemic intake. I look forward to trying more flavors from Muru in the future as the recipe gets fully dialed in. Müru Cannabis syrup

This high-CBD ACDC cartridge is some of the tastiest CBD extract I’ve ever tried. The starting material was expertly cultivated under the sun using a state of the art IPM method involving an insectary plant border that gives homes to beneficial insects so they can keep harmful ones at bay. The CO2 is a beautiful amber red color that is transparent when held to light. The pen hardware gives a smooth, heavy rip that is consistent and tasty. The flavor is candied cherry, which I find much more enjoyable than the traditional “medicinal cherry” taste that most CBD strains carry. Effects are relaxing, calming and focusing as there is no psychoactive effect fogging the brain. I would recommend this cartridge to consumers looking for a functional, relaxing high that is great for anytime of day. @ P e a k E x t ra c t s @ E a s t Fo r k C u l t i va r s THE SCORE

CUTTING EDGE HOW FAIRWINDS MANUFACTURING CREATED THE MOST DIVERSE AND USEFUL LINE OF INFUSED CANNABIS PRODUCTS IN THE WORLD

Founders Wendy and James Hull
Few companies focus on patient needs before the bottom line of sales, leaving medical and recreational users alike at a loss when trying to apply Cannabis to daily needs like sleep aids, energy blends or feminine products. Fairwinds Manufacturing is the exception to this trend, with a vibrant line of products that can fill a large portion of any medicine cabinet with Cannabis-derived products. “What I love about our products is the ability to open people’s eyes to Cannabis. When we hand them a product like the Flow topical or a non-psychoactive capsule, it opens their eyes to Cannabis as medicine,” said Wendy Hull, co-founder of Fairwinds. “People who would never try Cannabis before are learning and then sharing and it opens their minds. I call our products a gateway product — a gateway to what Cannabis can actually do for you.” The husband and wife team blends traditional Eastern medicine and values with scientific precision, which has taken a new step forward in the Fairwinds facility. Located in Vancouver, Wash., the Tier II facility acts as a producer and processor. The facility was designed from scratch by founder James Hull, a mechanical and electrical engineer and all-around whiz when it comes to HVAC, electrical and facility design and management. It’s no surprise that he did big things in his past career — James held a Top Secret security clear- “IT OPENS THEIR ance for the federal government and helped design EYES TO CANNABIS and build boat systems that are used by the Navy AS MEDICINE,” SEALs and other military applications, as well as SAID WENDY HULL, work on mega yachts in the private sector. “For the future of Cannabis as medicine, every- CO-FOUNDER. thing has to be standardized to protect the industry, from a pesticide and environmental standpoint to a controlled dosage and regulatory perspective,” James explained. “I didn’t come in from growing [pot] experience, I came in from technical experience. That’s why we have such a big focus on consistency. If this is a true medicine and the government wants to regulate it, there must be quality control. Our level of control and consistency matches from harvest to harvest, batch to batch and can prove with data our methods and model.” Marine design prioritizes efficiency, both for space and energy, and James applied that same mindset to his production facility. The entire operation is so efficient that only 11 employees run it, and that’s no small achievement. Continues pg. 58

has passed pesticide testing on every single batch. While Washington does ban certain pesticides but does not require testing, James insists on voluntarily testing every batch at a cost of tens of thousands of dollars per year, all to show the integrity and purity in their products. “When we started, the labs were a disaster and we had so much fluctuation, we bought our own HPLC testing equipment to run our own potency testing for in-house R&D,” James said. “We also pesticide-test every single batch and have never failed a single test. Our environmental controls are so precise that we don’t need chemicals. I haven’t missed a mark on this. It’s spot-on.”
THE POTENCY IS SIGNIFICANTLY ENHANCED BEYOND THE MILLIGRAM DOSING. IT’S THE SYNERGISTIC EFFECT OF THE CANNABIS AND THE HERBS THAT MAKES THIS SO VALUABLE, AS WELL AS THE FULL BLEND OF TERPENOIDS AND OTHER BENEFICIAL FACTORS, SAID MAX GOLDMAN, WHO MANAGES FAIRWINDS’ CHEMISTRY & EXTRACTION.
Once the flower is grown and cured, Max Goldman runs the chemistry department and extraction. Goldman spent two years living in a Buddhist commune in India studying Ayurveda medicine, which means the “Science of Life,” a 5,000-yearold system of health and disease that laid the foundation for modern Western medicine. “I integrate well-established potent extracts of herbs with thousands of years of proven use and then add Cannabis to them, and then we test and verify blends that can help benefit people,” he said. “Cannabis itself can’t deliver what the combination can deliver. And with our products, the potency is significantly enhanced beyond the milligram dosing. It’s the synergistic effect of the Cannabis and herbs and the full blend of terpenoids and other beneficial factors that makes this so valuable.”
The facility spends more annually on the more than 30 herbs used in blends than it does Cannabis, and the team also works extremely hard to maximize the benefits of the Cannabis plant. “This is a tribute to the plant and the history of Cannabis modernizing. Take our EmergenCBD product: it’s 1,000 milligrams of Vitamin C enhanced with Cannabis and Astragalus, a classic Chinese adaption tonic used in immune treatment and cancer treatment that is also known to improve the efficiency of chemotherapy,” co-founder James Hull explained. “It was the science side of Cannabis that brought me into Fairwinds.” The main extraction process is hydrocarbon for the flower, along with processing the post run along with stems, fresh leaves and the roots of the plant. This is what creates their full-spectrum extraction,
complete with all the medicinal elements like polysaccharides, alkaloids, waxes and Cannabinoids. With strains like the 25:1 CBD-dominant Omrita or the 2:1 Harle-Tsu, the strains become exceptionally valuable medicinally when full processed. Taking the Eastern medicine a step further, James and the team also work locally with patients and medical providers in the mainstream to provide data and in turn get more information back about how their products interact with patients, and to improve the formulas at every possible step. “We work with a team of doctors and it’s key because at the end of the day, they can’t work in a vacuum,” James said. “For this to be considered medicine for the government, the public and patients, it always is more effective, believable and credible with doctors standing behind it.” The full line of Fairwinds products can be seen at FairwindsManufacturing.com, where people can find retailers that carry specific products. With new research and lines coming from the facility each harvest, the future is bright for this incredibly driven team. “Our mission is to bring credibility and integrity to Cannabis and for people to be well and heal with our products,” Wendy said. “When you have success personally with Cannabis, it opens your mind and those around you to new possibilities. This was always the direction we wanted to go.”

FULL MELT ICE WAX THE HIGH STARTS BEHIND THE EYES WITH A EUPHORIC AND UPLIFTING EFFECT 60/sept. 2017 FACEBOOK.COM/NWLEAF
Oregon’s first recreational water hash comes in the form of a stellar collaboration between Permaculture Solutions and Nelson & Company. This 70 micron Gorilla Glue #4 smells like fresh burnt rubber when the jar is first cracked. Strong scents of black pepper were noticed as well when the hash became a little warmer in temperature and started to grease up. I’ve learned the most flavor and melt comes from dabs that are pre-pressed well, allowing the trichome glands to melt together as one. When dabbed, the concentrate left little to no char behind melting just like BHO, but without the solvents. The high starts behind the eyes with a euphoric and uplifting effect that lasts for the first few minutes. The body effects begin to creep in a bit later, which left me feeling relaxed, pain free and functional as I could do a few chores around the house. I would suggest this concentrate to consumers looking for a tasty, solventless option that is competitive with the price of solvent extractions. The Permaculture solutions crew recently opened a shop just off SE Flavel and 82nd Street which will exclusively carry the first batches of recreational hash and rosin. Look for more solventless concentrates to hit the shelves at Alternative Remedies soon, as a big wash for OLCC producer Ten Four Farms was underway. COOKING HERB 75 RECIPES FOR THE MARLEY NATURAL LIFESTYLE
By CEDELLA MARLEY, 2017, 240 PAGES, $30.00
I
t’s hard to stand out in the current crop of Cannabis cookbooks — but “Cooking With Herb” has no problem doing exactly that. None of the others are written by Bob Marley’s daughter. Wellness guru Cedella Marley grew up in Jamaica experiencing the restorative and spiritual properties of ganja firsthand. Now, she shows readers how to incorporate Cannabis into their kitchens. The book invites readers into Cedella’s family kitchen for a taste of the vibrant Jamaican culture that is essential to her lifestyle. Each recipe features one of three herb infusions — canna-oil, cannabutter, or canna Vanilla Extract — to help readers cook party-friendly fare such as Grilled Jerk Chicken with Tamarind Barbecue Sauce and Sticky Sweet Potato Pudding, “the Marley Way.” While hearty, comforting Jamaican classic dishes are a vital component of the book, Cedella also highlights ways to incorporate Cannabis into a natural beauty and wellness regimen, with scrubs such as Pumpkin Face Scrub and an Aloe-Hemp Exfoliator. More than just a stellar collection of psychoactive recipes, Cooking With Herb is filled with practical information, beautiful photography and Cedella’s captivating stories of growing up with her famous father. “Growing up, I was always surrounded by [Cannabis] — for me, the sweet whiff was as common as the aroma of Mommy burning the ginger and curry together in coconut oil for one of her famous onepot stews,” Cedella writes in the introduction. “From the time Daddy was a small boy he always respected nature and the healing properties of plants.” Cedella is the CEO of Tuff Gong International, the record label founded by her father in 1965. She also directs the Bob Marley Foundation, a nonprofit charitable organization.

SATIVA SCIENCE CLUB With summer gone, it’s already back to school season and the Cannabis community isn’t excused. As plant research continues to evolve, keeping up can seem overwhelming. Luckily, programs like the Sativa Science Club are here to help!
EMMA CHASEN | FARMA PDX DIRECTOR OF EDUCATION
64/SEPT. 2017 FACEBOOK.COM/NWLEAF
Tell us about the goals of the Sativa Science Club
Sativa Science Club is a collaborative effort to uplift and uphold quality standards industry-wide. Individually, we are Cannabis business owners, scientists, and entrepreneurs with a passion for plants and people. Together we are a powerful resource pool of experts with the unified goal of providing Cannabis education that is as entertaining as it is enlightening and accessible. We offer Cannabis science education, budtender training, mentorship opportunities, Cannabis business classes and community events.
What can you expect when attending a seminar?
A seminar usually lasts for four hours, but we try to make a day of it. Class starts at 12, but students can come as early as 10 to hang out on the High 5 bus for a little wake and bake. We also offer a Meet & Greet before class, so students are able to network with fellow classmates and instructors. Class begins at 12 and we begin with a comprehensive PowerPoint lecture broken up by fun activities and pop quizzes. When teaching, it is important for me to combine many different teaching styles so that I keep my students engaged. I also break up the lecture with activities and opportunities for questions so that I make sure we’re all on the same page. Teaching a class of 50 can be challenging when everyone has different levels of knowledge, so making the material as interesting as possible is crucial. In short, I’m a very animated teacher. Since we are at the Jupiter Hotel, we invite students to join us at the Doug Fir after the lecture for a drink so that we can continue the discussion and answer any questions people may have.
What workshops do you teach specifically and why?
I teach workshops on Cannabis science, empathetic patient care, retail compliance and general health and wellness. Since my degree is in Medicinal Plant Research and my background is in Cannabis retail, I have a mission to educate people on the science of Cannabis so that they may take charge of their own health care. Cannabis retail professionals (budtenders) are extremely undereducated and yet they are the ones simultaneously representing an entire industry to the consumer and interfacing with consumers who at times have medical concerns, even if the medical concern is anxiety or sleep deprivation. We need training for these budtenders and that’s the vacuum I intend to fill with my courses. Currently, I’m teaching a “Budtender Bootcamp” series that covers everything from Cannabis Botany (What is a plant?) to the receptor signaling mechanisms of the Endocannabinoid Receptor System. Cannabis science and education are ways to further de-stigmatize this amazing medicinal plant. That is so important if we want to continue to move this industry forward.
Who should attend these events? Industry members, enthusiasts, OMMP?
Everyone should attend these events! In my last few workshops, I’ve had students who were just enthusiasts to OMMP patients to industry professionals and Cannabis business owners. And I got the same feedback from all of my students — their minds were blown. The truth is, most people in this industry are undereducated about Cannabis science. Everyone can always benefit from more knowledge, especially since the field is evolving so quickly. New research is coming out every day. It’s important that everyone at least have an understanding of the basics behind Cannabis science so that we may continue to grow and evolve the industry.
When is the next workshop available?
My next class is the Endocannabinoid Receptor System on Friday, Sept. 22 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Jupiter Hotel. It’s going to be a great time!
Chasen helps to train the staff at Farma on Cannabis science, research and empathetic patient care. There she has been able to study the plant and help patients reframe their relationship with Cannabis as medicine. Through the Sativa Science Club, Chasen is able to spread her educational program through teaching, writing and consulting. In other words, this woman kicks ass. SEPT. 2017 FACEBOOK.COM/NWLEAF /65

SUNSET SHERBERT HOW SHE GROWS sensitive. The OG traits are right up in the forefront of
growth characteristics of the cut I’ve worked with. Slow to take off, she needs consistency in environment and delicacy and grace during transplant. But once in late veg, she becomes quite robust, producing medium-height, evenly spaced bushes that respond well to delicate and early tip topping. When worked consistently to space heads evenly, she puts off heavy bud sites of exquisite color and intoxicating smell. While I prefer the gassy, mossy terpenes that become dominant at the 70-day range and beyond, several farmers happily take her in the early 60s, accentuating the fruitier range of this exquisite cultivar.
BAG APPEAL & SMOKE REPORT much like her parental heritage, “The Sherb” takes
on an even darker range of colors than the famed GSC. She produced large, more bulbous flower sites, making her bag appeal second to none. Perhaps only a few steps below the frostiness of GSC, the range of purples, reds and blues that flow across these plump blooms makes them a gorgeous site. The scent is nothing short of intoxicating. If you are a terpene hound, this variety is the one for you. Accept no imitation; if it doesn’t have a smell like nothing you’ve ever experienced (with Gelato being the exception) you haven’t encountered the real cut. Regardless of the harvest window you choose, Sherbert boasts an unmatched fruit punch, push pop, sweet red berry scent that somehow matches perfectly with any level of the earthy, mossy, kushy punch that it sits over. The taste is all deep, earthy kush with a spectrum of sweet fruit punch flavor entirely contingent on the harvest window you chose.
EFFECTS bright, happy and still functional. One of the
many features that wins my personal taste when compared with her popular parent, is that Sherb is like a silly, confident friend to your mind where GSC is a thunderous donkey punch. I enjoy being able to sample a few different tastes of the Sherb and still be able to stay away. The muted, moss, earth and kush terps explode on the inhale and quickly translate into a soft, sweet, woody berry exhale. An alert and giggly state sets in, allowing stress to melt down the back of the neck and out of the way.
