NEWS

A note from Mark Bailey

Many of you will have joined with me and thousands of others at our 2014 United National Gatherings. We encountered God in so many different ways, and as is often the case when the people of God gather together in his presence, we saw extraordinary transformation; dreams were conceived, miracles happened, the will of God was made known and problems were solved. Together we celebrated with gratitude what God has done, and what we believe he could do in and through a people devoted and committed to his plans and purposes.

4

When Jesus arrived here on earth, he entered an arena that was quite similar to ours at this particular moment in time – in terms of the spiritual landscape. Today we see the collapse of people’s trust in the media, politicians, the church and many other institutions. It was similar for Jesus. The people of Israel in the first century knew that Judaism had lost its energy. There was a widespread sentiment of disillusionment with religion, which in many ways explains why people flocked to John the Baptist and to Jesus. But the collapse of institutional religion was accompanied by an increased interest in the personal search for God. Jesus tapped into this with his teaching on the kingdom of God and how people could become part of it. He offered a radical alternative to the legalistic and behavioural approach of the religious people of his day. He talked about and practised grace in terms of how God deals with people. He reminded them that God is for us and not against us, and he defined genuine spirituality in terms of our relationships – most importantly with God, and then with other people. The movement that Jesus inaugurated had power – why? Because it had at its core a personal, life-transforming experience. People encountered conversion and could not keep quiet about it. They discovered grace and love, and meaning for their lives, and they wanted others to experience the same. This is the dynamic of genuine Christianity, and that’s what we see being reflected in this edition of New Wine Magazine. It is our call here at New Wine to join God in his great redemptive effort to save those who are around us – people who are in darkness, who are going to die unless someone finds a way to save them. May we be encouraged to not sleep on the job, to make sure that we pursue every opportunity to be filled with the presence, power, grace and love of God, so that we can give out of what we have received, and give away the good news that is ours to others. With my love and prayers

Mark Bailey Leader, New Wine

NEW WINE’S VISION To see the nation changed through Christians experiencing the joy of worshipping God, the freedom of following Jesus, and the power of being filled with the Spirit. To see churches renewed, strengthened and planted, living out the word of God in every aspect of life, serving God by reaching the lost, broken and poor, and demonstrating the good news of the kingdom of God to all. NEW WINE’S VALUES Continuity & Change – we want to be faithful guardians of an unchanging message about the person and work of Jesus, and the need for personal salvation and sanctification, while also adapting ways of worship, teaching, being church and doing mission according to culture and context. Cross & Resurrection – we want to honour all that Jesus has done for us on the cross, and to embrace the way of the cross for ourselves, while also knowing the power of his resurrection to set us free.

NEWS

OUR VISION AND VALUES Mission & Community – we want to see the church become a missionary movement to love and reach the lost, to care for the poor and to bring justice to our homes, neighbourhoods, workplaces and nations, while also being a grace-filled community in which people can find relationship, healing, faith, hope and love. Natural & Supernatural – we want to see every Christian using all the natural reason, wisdom and skill that they can, while also learning to operate in the supernatural gifts of the Spirit to minister to others in love and power as Jesus did. Now & Not yet of the Kingdom – we want to proclaim the good news of the kingdom of God and to see that confirmed by miraculous signs and wonders, while also ministering grace to all, knowing that suffering will be part of life until Jesus returns and makes all things new. Transcendence & Presence – we want to live lives that celebrate God’s awesome power, transcendent majesty and sovereign work, while at the same time experiencing his intimate presence as we encounter him in heartfelt worship.

Gracious & Truthful – we want to be kind and generous in the way we think and speak about others whether they agree or disagree with us, while also clearly communicating what we believe and why we believe it.

Unity & Diversity – we want to work with everyone who holds these values in open, mutually accountable friendship, while also acknowledging and honouring differences in leadership style, church characteristics and denominational emphasis.

Leadership & Every-member Ministry – we want to train and deploy anointed, courageous and missional church leaders, while also equipping every Christian to serve like Jesus in their home, church, work and life-place.

Word & Spirit – we want to derive all we believe, teach and do from the Bible as the written word of God, while also learning to hear and obey the voice of the Spirit speaking to us individually and collectively.

EVENT FEEDBACK THINKING ABOUT COMING TO A NEW WINE EVENT? GOD COMES TO THEM TOO! HERE’S JUST A FEW OF THE GREAT GOD STORIES WE’VE HEARD FROM THE PEOPLE WHO WENT

KIDS WORKERS TRAINING DAYS ‘It motivated me to step up to what God has been talking to me about and how to grow the children’s work in my church.’ ‘Inspiring, Spirit-led and practical teaching. God was speaking through each session and the day was a blessing personally, as well as offering lots of exciting opportunities for our church.’ ‘We were equipped to engage children in a variety of different ways from worship and teaching to drama and sports. We’ve since heard stories of sports being introduced into kids work to engage those on the fringes, ‘tricks’ being used to engage children with the gospel, and creative prayer sessions helping children grow in their friendship with Jesus. We want to develop a network across the region to deepen relationships and encourage each other to reach this generation of children.’ Maryanne Richardson & Matt Beckett (event hosts)

RETREAT TO ADVANCE 18-30s CONFERENCES ‘I came pretty drained and seeking God’s heart afresh. During ministry they invited people who felt trapped and wanted God’s freedom. I got this sense of freedom and I still do. It was the Lord moving quietly but it has made so much difference.’ ‘Before RTA I was stuck in certain ways of thinking which stopped me progressing in my relationship with God, but through the teaching, worship, ministry time and time spent with friends that has changed drastically. I’m more free, happier and closer to God!’ ‘RTA helped me realise that I needed to be patient while waiting for God to work but also that I needed to throw myself into God’s calling completely and not enter it on my terms.’

10

WORSHIP DAYS ‘I am always leading at the front so it was great to be able to just come and receive and worship freely. It was about picking up dreams and prayers that I had let go and being anointed afresh by the Holy Spirit.’ ‘I experienced the powerful presence of God during the sung worship in a way I haven’t for a while.’ ‘I brought a large number of my worship team and felt like we went away as a more encouraged, united team of musicians hungry to seek God’s presence back at our home church.’ ‘I came feeling worn out in my role as worship pastor and received encouragement and blessing. I brought my 14-year-old daughter who attended the youth stream and was blessed by the whole experience – she’s absolutely on fire for her calling in this ministry!’ Alastair Gibson, St Swithin’s, Bath

NEWS

WOMEN’S DAYS ‘My daughter received Jesus into her life at the event!’ ‘Three women who had never been to an event like this went forward for prayer at the end. They came back crying with joy at encountering God! Another lady who had been struggling found herself crying all the following week. When I went to see her she gave her life to Jesus! God was so present that day!’ Rev Lorelli Hilliard, St John with St Philip Church, Nelson ‘I went feeling weary, discouraged and wondering how I would ever do what God has called me to. I left knowing that God loves me, values me and will equip me.’ Caroline Reynolds, Ponteland Methodist Church ‘I was inspired by Jessie Joe Jacob’s work getting girls off the streets and I have made enquiries about starting an outreach project for homeless youngsters. God seems to be opening the doors for us which is very exciting!’ Tracy Hooper, Network Vineyard Church ‘A 17 year-old in our group was going through great family difficulties. She doesn’t like getting emotional or physical contact. Not only did she go up for prayer, but she stayed in someone’s arms whilst weeping. The next day in our church we were doing cardboard testimonies. This girl’s testimony was: “Felt unloved, now Loved Unconditionally.”’ ‘Felt a little anxious at the start with claustrophobia, but asked Jesus to take my anxiety away so that I could concentrate and I felt immediately calm. My heart stopped racing and my hands stopped sweating.’ ‘Loved it – wonderful worship, great speakers, thought-provoking, challenging, helpful and very real.’

LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE ‘I felt nurtured, affirmed, encouraged and released into ministering God’s love. I cannot express the degree to which this has refreshed me and I’m ready to move forward, which I cannot envisage without the support of the New Wine network.’ ‘I received powerful prayer ministry that has released a final piece of jigsaw into some very long-term healing that God was able to bring to completion in me.’ ‘I have recently had surgery on my left leg to remove metal work from a previous injury. During the talk the scars faded and the pain lessened!’ ‘I have been wrestling with marital breakdown and a lack of expectation of the Holy Spirit in our traditional church. Jesus let me know how he shares my pain about my marriage and also gave me an exciting image about how the Holy Spirit is already in our community, ready and waiting.’ ‘Encouragement, affirmation and assurance. Best ministry training I’ve had – ever.’

An Interview with Philip Yancey

TEACHING

How to be grace-full

Philip Yancey believes grace to be the essence of the Christian faith. His new book, Vanishing Grace, investigates what happened to the good news of the Gospel, facing up to accusations of intolerant and fundamentalist attitudes of the Church, and demonstrating how to offer grace in a way that is irresistible to a struggling society. James Dwyer caught up with him to ask a few questions. What does God’s grace mean to you on a personal level, and how would you explain grace to someone with no faith?

‘A grace-filled person will look for the vulnerable…for the loner, or the person with cerebral palsy in a wheelchair who is difficult to communicate with. The same pattern should apply in our churches’

13

TEACHING

How does grace play out in local churches throughout ‘normal’ life?

‘We live in a competitive society, a dog-eat-dog world... We respond to insults with insults. You bomb my country, we bomb you back... Along comes this melodic tune from another world that shows us a different way to be human’ Is it possible to grasp grace without also understanding and recognising the love and power of God?

Do you think grace is badly preached in the modern church? Or that the power and significance of grace is lost in ‘religious’ duty?

UNITED 2014: YOUR STORIES A SECRET CELEBRATION

‘My husband Chris and I recently celebrated our 25th wedding anniversary. We were serving on the stewarding team this summer and Chris had secretly arranged for us to renew our wedding vows – in the New Wine Prayer Shed followed by a party in the stewards’ lounge! He invited family and friends to be there for the day. I just want to say a big thank you to Chris for doing a very good job in keeping it a secret for so long, and for arranging everything, even what I was going to wear. Here’s to the next 25 years.’ Fiona Dunn

A WEDDING PROPOSAL & A BIRTH!

Huge congratulations to Kathryn & Jon who got engaged on site via an aeroplane banner proposal on 5 August! And to village hosts Joy and Nigel Harrison, parents of baby Isaac who was born during the National Gatherings on 7 August in Salisbury. They made it back on site for the celebration that evening!

CHANGED FROM HEAD TO TOE

‘When I was lying in bed I felt different. Braver than usual. I felt like I understood God more than before and that he is always with me. New Wine 2014 has changed me and God has poured the Holy Spirit right through me, from my head to my toes. And I feel like God could do the same to others, not just me. God is always with us. Cara, aged 9

MENDED BONES & VANISHING SCARS

‘This week at Rock Solid (kids aged 8-9) a child broke their arm and needed to go to hospital for plastering – it was broken in many places. He had to return for re-plastering once the swelling had gone down. A group of kids laid hands on him and prayed. When he returned to the hospital there was nothing there – no breaks! Also, I met a girl on team who had been self-harming for some time and receiving counselling. She couldn’t have skin grafts as her cuts were so bad. She remained totally covered, in a polo neck even on the hottest days. The leaders prayed with her and she felt nothing; the kids prayed and she felt warm but nothing else. Back at her tent getting ready for bed she thought there was a difference but not sure. The following morning there were no scars on her arms! She showered and by the time she got out, no scars on her body. She screamed thinking there was something wrong with her eyes. She borrowed shorts and a t-shirt from someone, which she’s not worn for years. Thank you Jesus.’ Deb Taylor

BEND, TWIST & DANCE!

‘I have never managed to come to New Wine as I have been unable to camp due to severe arthritic pain in my back and neck. This year I came for half a week to give it a try. I prayed before coming and actually said to the Lord that I didn’t expect to be healed but just wanted a deeper encounter with Jesus. At the first meeting Robby Dawkins encouraged us to pray for each other for healing. My friend nervously prayed for me. After a while I felt I needed to move my body. I had been very stiff for years and was unable to turn my neck. Our wonderful Jesus has healed me completely. I can bend, twist, turn, run and dance. I believe I have also been healed from depression. I am so full of joy. When I returned to my home church I spoke to a young mother about what Jesus had done for me. She told me she suffered from fibromyalgia and was in constant pain and suffering from severe anxiety, and wore a pelvic belt to support her back. I asked if I could pray for her. Again, Jesus blessed her and she has been free from pain ever since and has been able to stop treatment for her condition.’ Christina Minty

BLOWN AWAY

‘It was our first time at New Wine (and camping) and it was truly an amazing week. I was extremely apprehensive about coming as I have three young children, and my middle child has special needs. I was completely blown away by the care that was provided for him by Our Place and his one-to-one helper. Never before has he been able to access a mainstream group, but he went to Ground Breakers twice a day and had a great time. And I was able to go to worship and some seminars, which really was a blessing for both of us and beyond anything I had expected.’ Lucy Carvill

A FRUITFUL PRAYER TREE

FREE FROM DEPRESSION

MIND, BODY & SPIRIT

‘This was my third year and to be honest the thought of arranging a lift down to Shepton Mallet and not knowing whether it would be raining and windy nearly put me off. I should have known better as God never disappoints, and always seems to appear when you least expect it. What an extraordinary week. All the speakers were great and who will ever forget the Martin Smith night? The whole place was rocking. Bring on the rain and the wind, it doesn’t matter. Bring on New Wine 2015.’ Ian Bartlett

STORIES

GOD NEVER DISAPPOINTS

‘Our first family outing to New Wine was fantastic. We were so impressed by everything and everyone, especially the dedicated Gems and Pebbles teams. But I want to give specific thanks for an answer to prayer. Sophie (our three year-old) had been complaining that her tummy hurt for months, so we left a prayer request on the Pebbles prayer tree. I’ll spare you all the details but she has not produced anything solid for months and had been referred to the paediatric gastro department at the hospital. Since that prayer request what’s been leaving her looks completely normal again. Praise God. She had a fantastic time at Pebbles and is already looking forward to next year.’ Anna Sargeant ‘I have never been to New Wine before and the experience of worshipping with thousands of other Christians, being adopted into the ministry team and being challenged to be braver in following our Lord has been wonderful. Alongside the teaching and worship, it was heartening to be treated as a rounded human being in the real world. So an exercise class coupled with Bible reading was good for mind, body and spirit, and an excellent way to start the day. Seminars and marketplace stalls dealt with issues of poverty, social justice and conservation, as well as Bible teaching, mission and prayer. A mind-blowing week!’ Sian Cheverton

SLOTTED INTO PLACE

‘I had an amazing and emotional experience where God just slotted everything into place. I was brought to my knees while being prayed for one evening and just gave everything to the Lord. My adult daughter who has Down’s syndrome does not usually engage in worship so when her arms left their usual folded position and rose in the air I was ecstatic. But later that night I was back on my knees sobbing, praying and wondering if there was a Christian parent support group. The next morning at the Our Place parents’ tent, Maggie Stapleton from Care for the Family Additional Needs Parent Support was giving a talk. After spending time with her I realised that God had stagemanaged everything and put me just where I needed to be. I not only received support, but I now know how to use my experience to help others and am really excited as I wait to start training with Care for the Family to become a befriender.’ An Howell

UNITED 2014: YOUR STORIES FATHER GOD, ME & CANCER

‘My story begins at New Wine 2012, when I found myself getting gradually more tired, and at the end of the week could only stand for the beginning of worship. Ten days after getting home I was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia. Words from the conference were swirling around my head as I found myself handing the situation over to Father God. I was way out of my depth and I knew only he could get me through it. I was admitted to hospital and underwent four months of chemo and a bone marrow transplant. I had people all around the world praying for me and the transplant went smoothly. I returned home and booked for New Wine 2013 in faith that I’d still be around. But the week before it looked like I’d developed problems with my lungs. I still went to New Wine and wept my way through it, while friends joined together and prayed for me. I didn’t have the energy to dance and it hurt to sing, and as we left I cried at the thought of not returning. I didn’t get to see a lung consultant until November, and when I did he told me my lungs were absolutely perfect! I knew Father God was moving big time. But things took a turn for the worse when I was told on New Year’s Eve that there were signs that my leukaemia was returning. I was offered a series of infusions in the hope of causing a reaction that would fight the leukaemia, but it was a very slim chance. It didn’t seem to be working and in March we asked family and friends to come together and pray. Three weeks later I was back in remission! The consultant said he had only ever seen this treatment work for one other person. This year at New Wine I was able to sing and dance on God’s great dance floor. I still have a few problems with my platelets and eyes, but a small price to pay for life! Father God does heal cancer, and New Wine brings together groups of people who offer to pray and support!’ Rachel Partridge

‘Jesus has become real to me. I now see him as someone who cares about all the small parts of my life – and is more than just church on a Sunday morning’ MORE FUN THAN WE EVER IMAGINED

‘This year our family had our New Wine debut and had the most amazing and transforming time and I can’t believe what a difference one week has made in our lives. My ten-year-old son was in Bolder Gang and has come home with such a deep sense of the Holy Spirit and so strengthened in his faith. He and his younger brother (in Rock Solid) had more fun than they ever imagined and learned so much. The teenage helpers are fun and great role models and looked after our boys beautifully. It was a safe, relaxing, loving, inspirational, uplifting, friendly and amazing place to be for all four of us.’ Kinga Fogarasi

JESUS IS REAL TO ME

‘I’ve been going to church with my family for a long time but I’ve never enjoyed it. It’s boring and I don’t really have any friends. This year I got to go to New Wine with my family and by the third day it had completely changed how I look at God. Firstly, I’d made friends in my group. But the main reason is that through all the teaching, discussions and talks, Jesus has become real to me. I now see him as someone who cares about all the small parts of my life – and is more than just church on a Sunday morning.’ Anon, aged 8/9

THE ENTHUSIASM LIVES ON

‘Our son returned from Ground Breakers and asked his younger brother whether he loved Jesus and was willing to do his special mission. Then he proceeded to anoint him with oil! It was a very precious moment. We have also been blessed by the worship and the kids’ enthusiasm for worshipping God lives on. It will no doubt impact our wider church.’ Anon

PEACE AFTER 20 YEARS OF PAIN

‘For 20 years I have had bipolar disorder, depression, anxiety and panic attacks, and also heard voices. I struggled with self-harm and have taken many overdoses. The voices became really bad one morning at New Wine, which often happens when going to church – it felt like I had ear muffs on. I could not hear the worship or the talk (by Robby Dawkins). As I went for prayer something stirred in me and I had an intense pain through my body then my ears popped. I have not heard any voices since and have felt such peace. I’ve had a couple of low days but on the whole I am so much better and people have commented how well I look. I have even managed to walk around our village with no panic attacks. I thank God for his deliverance!’ Sharon Minor

GOD SWITCHED A LIGHT ON

‘Our foster son James has severe autism and I had lots of concerns about how we would manage at New Wine. We made a decision to leave if we found it too difficult. I spoke with the Our Place team about behaviours such as taking his shirt off, holding on to door handles, walking backwards and turning in circles. James was totally disengaged and would no longer watch TV or do a puzzle, and would only mumble and not make eye contact. But he appeared pleased to be at New Wine from the minute we arrived. As the days went on I saw a remarkable change in him. He started to build Lego, do jigsaws, was talking more and giving eye contact. When we returned home this continued; he was helping himself to puzzles and building blocks and smiling much more. It felt like God had switched a light on and James was back with us. It is a real miracle to us because we were beginning to wonder how long we could support James in this state of anxiety and disengagement. I feel reassured and would like to thank Our Place for the love, care and prayer James received.’ Elaine & William Hooper 31

UNITED 2014: YOUR STORIES NEW EYES

‘I developed a sudden, debilitating eye condition causing double vision seven weeks before I was due to serve on the Ministry Enabling Team at New Wine. I distinctly heard the Lord tell me not to worry and that he would give me new eyes – spiritual eyes. A prism was fitted to my glasses to correct my vision and I was able to return to work. While on team at New Wine I received prayer but unfortunately was not healed. The Lord continued to give me words of encouragement, pictures and visions and I had the privilege of praying for healing for others suffering from eye problems. On my first day back at work after New Wine my vision rapidly improved. I was able to remove my glasses for a meeting and was no longer seeing double. The following day the improvement was so dramatic that I was able to remove the prism. Now I am completely healed and give thanks and praise to our gracious Lord who not only gave me my eyesight back (and actually improve my short sightedness) but has also given me new spiritual eyes.’

FIRE IN THEIR BELLIES

‘I brought some folks from our urban church near Liverpool for the first time this year. They had all come to faith in the last six months and brought some children including teenagers who have not yet found God. None had ever camped before and between them they had a rather long list of tragic backgrounds and experiences. They loved New Wine! It was hugely significant for each of them in healing and finding direction and in opening their eyes to what God is doing through the church, and one of the children came to faith. Since then they have been getting involved in new ministries among the marginalised, including our previously failing weekly community lunch, and are pushing to open up avenues of service in the nearby women’s refuge and addiction rehab place. They certainly came away with fire (or more of God’s spirit) in their bellies. Others in the church have noticed and are saying they don’t want to miss out next year.’ Jeremy Duff

SEEING MUM WALK FOR THE FIRST TIME ‘A mum of one of our Pebbles children was using a mobility scooter on the first day. That evening she received prayer and believed God had told her to stop using it and to walk. Later, someone asked her about the scooter and where they could buy one. She felt this was confirmation from God. On the second day she tried walking with crutches. By the third day she was walking and came into Pebbles to tell us it was the first time her child had seen her walk. She sold the scooter that day!’

you love them. Unconditionally. But they’re still here. Many young people are struggling to find their way in the world. We believe a bit of perspective helps. We’ve got these great placements, known as International Citizen Service (ICS), offering 18to 25-year-olds a chance to spend 10 weeks in Rwanda, Bolivia, South Africa or Bangladesh. The growth you’ll see in them when they return will be incredible. Learning to serve in struggling communities increases confidence, builds new skills and develops understanding. We’ve got 40 years’ experience sending volunteers overseas, so they’ll be in safe hands. The best bit? The placements are government funded, so you won’t be left footing the bill!

Fruitfulness on the Frontline

If you want a book that is thought provoking and inspiring, this is for you. If you want to be reminded that you’ve been created for a reason, this is for you. If you want to be reminded which voice, in the midst of all the noise, you should listen to, this is for you. It’s a manifesto for human creativity and the beginning of a new Renaissance. There are inspirational stories and insights from art, history, life and Scripture, and a call to reclaim our creative essence, reminding us how to craft our lives into a work of art. Mark Bailey is Leader of New Wine and Lead Pastor of Trinity Cheltenham.

98% of our time is not spent at church. In this horizon-expanding and spirit-lifting book, Mark Greene serves up a liberating view of how God does and can work through us in our daily lives. Our ‘frontline’ may be in a factory, at the gym, in the supermarket, in the local community, or in an office. Mark suggests that we are uniquely placed to be his ambassadors in any and all of these places – if only we realised it. If you want to catch a vision for how you might bring transformation through your daily life, or if you want to envision others for whole-life discipleship, get yourself a copy. Dave Hopwood

Targeting seven- to 12-year-old Horrible Histories fans, this introduction to the life of Jesus has plenty of funny cartoony illustrations, and quizzes on every page: ‘In the next parable a woman lost: 1) her marbles 2) her coin 3) her WiFi signal…’ The ten-year-old Horrible Histories fan in our house deemed the book ‘very funny – I like the facts’. Personally I found the facts well researched, drawing on Tom Wright’s New Testament for Everyone series. If it can get a raised-in-church kid like mine to keep reading, I reckon it would entertain and inform any child with a sense of humour. Nice one Dave Hopwood. Clare Rogers is on the children’s work team at NewLife Church, Palmers Green.

This is a comprehensive course that can be used within the confines of a healing training day or possibly a sermon series to be followed up in small groups. The material is easily accessible and can be utilised by those with existing experience of healing ministry as well as those totally new to it. Paul Harcourt and Lin Button are not afraid to tackle the difficult issues including unanswered prayer and blockages that can occur due to past baggage. The teaching is practical and securely grounded in Scripture, giving a basis for good practice when praying for people. Suzan Williams is a curate at St Laurence Church in Stretton. Citizen

Rob Peabody

Many of us find sharing our faith difficult and, often, demoralising. We feel disheartened by the indifference of others and wonder why God isn’t more obviously at work in their lives. Steve Addison’s latest offering may just restore our passion and enthusiasm. Beginning with an exploration of Jesus’ ministry of looking for those whom God had already prepared and inviting them to journey with him, Addison goes on to describe the effectiveness of the Early Church and their faithfulness to Jesus’ methods. Interspersed with stories and resources, it brings hope, grows confidence, and spurs us on to be part of the momentum which Jesus set in motion. Ian Parkinson is New Wine Regional Director for the North and leads All Saints’ Marple, Stockport.

Many Christians are dissatisfied with their spiritual lives, sensing that something is missing. But on closer examination it’s clear that we’ve simply tried to add Jesus into an already crowded, consumer-driven life. Even the culture inside the church can reflect those issues rather than challenge them. That was the realisation that shook the author from a promising career in an American megachurch and caused him to relocate to the UK to plant fresh expressions of church. Citizen is a challenging and, at times, unsettling read, asking fundamental questions about what it is to follow Jesus today. But it’s also full of hope and inspiration about what risks of faith may lie ahead for each of us. Paul Harcourt is New Wine Regional Director for London and East and leads All Saints’ Woodford Wells.
