What is SOAR? SOAR is your Summer Orientation Advisement and Registration and this is your invitation to attend. In this publication you will find important information about registering. Attending SOAR is your next step in becoming a Bearcat. Sign up soon You will want to register for SOAR soon. There are step-by-step instructions in this brochure about how to sign up online. Once you complete your registration to attend SOAR, you will know immediately what day you will be attending and in a few weeks you will receive a more detailed confirmation of your SOAR date with a schedule and other important information. Our SOAR team will also begin working on your fall course schedule as soon as we receive your SOAR registration. Schedules are completed based on receipt of your SOAR registration, so the first person to register will be scheduled into classes first. You’ll read more about the registration process in this publication. So, it doesn’t matter which SOAR date you choose - just sign up early!

Who should attend? Parents should attend SOAR with you, if possible. We have a day full of activities to help your family become familiar with Northwest personnel, the community and the culture. We give them an orientation to campus too and answer any questions they may have. In addition, at the Student Services Fair, families can meet and talk with people from student life and student services.

Cost The one-time new student fee, billed in the fall trimester, covers a number of costs related to you starting at Northwest, including the cost of you and your family to attend SOAR.

SOAR dates Friday, June 16 Saturday, June 17 (Music Day)* Tuesday, June 20 Wednesday, June 21 Friday, June 23 Saturday, June 24 Tuesday, June 27 Wednesday, June 28 * This day is for music majors and minors, but other majors may attend this day as well

Major Decisions When you register for SOAR, you will be asked to confirm your major. This helps us create your first trimester schedule. If you haven’t decided on a major, that’s okay too. In fact, many students will tell you that coming to college without a major is a positive experience, and some would even recommend it.

four meta majors:

Deciding students have a choice of Sciences, Business, Education, or University Studies. University Studies is appropriate for many interest areas or for students who need a little more time to explore. If you would like to see the majors that fall into each meta major to help you decide which of the four areas most suits you, visit http://www.nwmissouri.edu/advisementassistance/deciding.htm and choose meta major map.

Advisement and class schedules

University Seminar

We take a proactive approach to advising and registration by pre-scheduling all first-time freshmen. Your schedule is constructed based on recommendations from your department and an advisor, and a comprehensive file that includes:

University Seminar is part of the Northwest Core and a graduation requirement. This course is designed to help you transition to college and achieve success at Northwest. ■■ Your academic profile consisting of your

major or meta-major, ACT scores, high school transcripts, previous college credit

■■ And other special considerations that

include: music scholarships, varsity sports participation, University Seminar preference, Living and Academic Learning participation, and your course preferences provided in your SOAR registration, among other things

■■ Community Engagement ■■ Leadership Development ■■ Global Perspective

Students not interested in a themed section will be place in a traditional section of University Seminar.

At SOAR you can accept your entire schedule or change part or all of it, then you’ll get a copy to take home.

This will not necessarily determine your first trimester schedule, as certain majors will dictate certain courses, but it helps us create your schedule when options are available.
