Making
connections
Earn hands-on experience right on campus The Horace Mann Laboratory School and the Phyllis and Richard Leet Center for Children and Families allow students who are studying education and early childhood education to get real-world experience without leaving campus, a distinct advantage.
Dr. Richard Toomey
Associate professor of chemistry
I connect my students in the classroom because I do not lecture, every class is a 50 minute class-wide discussion.
I contribute to the students’ preparation for the “real world by recognizing that the content of
the class is secondary to the process through which the students are challenged. Problem solving, oral communication skills and group interactions are skills that everyone needs and are not restricted to chemistry. The goal is to create independent thinkers that have the skills to solve complex problems and enhance the way that information is shared in a society where challenges are interdisciplinary.

Make the
transition
Transferring to Northwest Missouri State University is a simple process. Listed below are the basics you need to know.
GPA
TRANSFERRING credit
Northwest requires a minimum 2.00 GPA to be accepted, although some programs have a higher requirement. For students with a cumulative college GPA below 2.00, consideration may be given based on professional judgement, and acceptance may be granted on a probationary basis.
Northwest will accept transfer credit from a regionally accredited institution on the following conditions: 1. The course is not developmental or remedial in nature 2. The course is not designed for vocational/ technical credit (unless pursuing a Bachelor of Technology degree; see page 8)
Northwest operates on a flat 4.00 scale – no pluses or minuses. Therefore, if you’re transferring from an institution that uses pluses and minuses, your GPA could be different here. Once you are a student at Northwest, grades from your previous institution will be factored into your cumulative GPA.
Not all courses will have direct equivalents so they may be transferred as elective credit. For more information go to nwmissouri.edu/ admissions/transfer/equivalencies.htm. We encourage students to work with our Admissions and Advisement offices at Northwest as early as possible to assist in the transfer process.
6
ASSOCIATE degrees
DIRECTED gen eds
An Associate of Arts degree from a regionally accredited institution in Missouri or an institution with which Northwest has a general education articulation agreement will waive Northwest’s general education requirements.
Certain degree programs (such as education and business) may have special requirements that cause exceptions to general transfer policies. For example a student who has completed an AA may waive their general education requirements, but Business majors are still required to take college algebra, statistics and economics.
Visit this website to see if we have a general education agreement for your school. nwmissouri.edu/admissions/transfer/ agreements. If you are transferring with another type of degree or without a degree, your credit will be evaluated on a course-bycourse basis.
Transfer of lower-division credits beyond the two-year degree
GENERAL EDUCATION block
Students may choose to continue coursework at a two-year school after they have completed a two-year degree and/or 64 credit hours of lower-division credit. This additional coursework may meet prerequisites or some major requirements at Northwest, although students should consult articulation agreements and a Northwest transfer advisor for assistance on course selection. Some departments require a specific percentage of coursework be completed at Northwest.
Northwest will accept in transfer a successfully completed 42 semester-hour block of general education courses taken at a public institution of higher education in the state of Missouri to waive general education requirements. These courses need to be designated on the transcript by the sending institution as fulfilling the requirements of the statewide goals associated with specific skill and knowledge areas. Go to nwmissouri. edu/academics/catalog to check out Northwest’s general education requirements.
For a step-by-step guide to transferring to Northwest, visit nwmissouri.edu/admissions/transfer/guide.htm.

All in the
details
ARTICULATION agreements
Joint admission
Northwest has many articulation agreements with other colleges that define how courses will transfer, although these do not encompass all of the credit Northwest accepts. Visit Northwest’s website to view a list at nwmissouri.edu/admissions/transfer/ equivalencies.htm. If you are looking for something that is not listed, contact a transfer advisor to talk about your credit.
Northwest has partnered with Metropolitan Community College–Kansas City, North Central Missouri College and Southwestern Community College to allow students some of the benefits of a Northwest education while they are pursuing their associate’s degree at the 2-year college. For details, visit nwmissouri.edu/academics/agreements.
BACHELOR of technology
PREREGISTRATION and orientation
This degree is designed for students who have completed a one- or two-year vocational or technical certificate or a technically focused Associate of Applied Science (AAS) or Associate of Science (AS) degree, but have now set their sights on a bachelor’s degree. The curriculum leading to the Bachelor of Technology degree is individually developed for each candidate and provides for the transfer of non-college-parallel vocational or technical coursework from a regionally accredited college. Most students in this program have majors in agriculture or business, but there are many options including computer science and graphic design.
A preregistration and orientation program has been designed specifically for transfer students prior to the start of all sessions. You will have the opportunity to meet with an advisor, register and become acquainted with Northwest. You will receive an invitation in the mail and must sign up to attend. If you are unable to attend a scheduled registration date, you will register for classes during General Registration just prior to the start of the trimester.
