GLACIER NATIONAL PARK The Crown of the Continent, Glacier National Park is one of Mother Nature’s splendid jewels. Marvel at spectacular mountains and glacial lakes. The park has much to offer. There are 48 glaciers, hiking trails, camping, interpretive walks, boating, cruises, rafting, fishing and it is a playground for photographers. The scenic 52-mile Going-to-the-Sun Highway crosses the Continental Divide to the summit at Logan Pass, an elevation of 6,550 feet. Established as a National Park on May 11, 1910, the park encompasses over 1,000,000 acres and includes parts of two mountain ranges of the great and rugged Rocky Mountains, over 130 named lakes, more than 1,000 species of plants and hundreds of species of animals. An amazing adventure, drive the Going-to-the-Sun Highway, a feat of construction, or take the shuttle from Apgar. Along the way, visit the historic hotels built by the Great Northern Railway and listed on the National Historic Landmarks. At the summit is the Visitor’s Center. The cost is $25 per car in the summer season. For more information, call 406-892-2525. Boating in Glacier... Lake McDonald and Many Glacier offer both kayak and canoe rentals. Lake McDonald Lodge has a boat tour. Hiking in Glacier... The park has over 730 miles of hiking trails from easy to hard. With so many options, it is best to consult a travel guide. One of the easiest hikes is Avalanche Creek and up to Avalanche Lake. Along the way to the glacial lake are pristine glacier waters, giant cedar trees and waterfalls. Moderate to strenuous, the Grinnell Glacier hike is about 13 miles long. The Hidden Lake trail head, at Logan Pass, is about a 3-mile round trip, considered moderate to difficult but it is surely worth the work! 23
