hat’s your idea of a perfect summer day? Does it involve watching baseball, cooking something tasty on the grill or heading to an ice cream parlor? Maybe you favor a boat ride or a round of golf or an outing to the zoo or a festival or a farmers market or all of the above? How about watching fireworks light the night sky or enjoying a bicycle ride or a concert under the stars? When you think about it, these are the simple pleasures that enrich the tapestry of our lives and make good memories. And while opportunities abound in our region for all of these pleasures, it’s up to each one of us to set aside our to-do lists and take advantage of them while we can. Summer days fly by so quickly. As our cover story explains, the 66-game season of Fort Wayne’s TinCaps minor league baseball team is underway at Parkview Field. The organization is pulling out all stops to make this a year of family fun and spectacle. Every Friday and Saturday night game is capped by fireworks and there’ll also be fireworks after games on June 21, July 4 and four Thursday games. Find the full lineup of games and promotions and get ticket information at milb.com/ fort-wayne. If it’s playing on the water that delights you, our lakes region is a joy. Don’t own a boat? No problem. Hop aboard the Sweet Breeze, Fort Wayne’s authentic canal boat replica, for a cool glide down the river and a chance to learn some city history, too. Catch the boat at Promenade Park. Looking for a festival or concert or farmers market? Visit Fort Wayne (visitfortwayne. com) is an online goldmine of event information. Among upcoming festivals are Arabfest, Germanfest, Greekfest, New Haven Canal Fest, Ribfest, Sweetwater Gearfest and the new Middle Waves music festival – and that’s just in June! There’s a ton of fun to be had this summer, so let the planning begin! Have a good week! ❚Janine Pumilia SL Editor

June 4 Eggfest
It’s Time for Some Backyard Bliss!

hat do you expect from your grill? How often do you use it and for how many people do you cook? Do you want to expand your outdoor cooking repertoire or keep things simple? You’ll likely be asked these questions at BBQStore&More, 17007 Doty Road in New Haven, Ind., because making a good match between grill and griller is important, says Tyler Schafer, sales and service manager. Just as important is using top-notch products made in America. “We’re not out to compete with a big-box store on price,” says Schafer. “We sell only higher-end equipment from companies that stand behind their lifetime warranties. And nearly everything in our showroom is manufactured in the United States. You sure won’t find that at a big-box store.” A convenient way to learn what the store offers is to visit the 14th Annual Eggfest on June 4. It’s a day when about 40 Big Green Egg ceramic grills are fired up, along with hand-picked brands of gas, charcoal and pellet grills, pizza ovens and other outdoor cooking equipment. Those choice brands include Alfresco, Alfa Ovens, Blaze Grills, Delta Heat, Meadowcreek BBQ, Memphis Grills, Phoenix Grills, Pizza-Porta, Smokin Brothers, The Meat Stick and Twin Eagles Grills. Brand representatives will be on site June 4 to answer questions and demonstrate what their grills can do. “Last year we grilled a 4-foot alligator,” says Schafer. Commercial equipment also will be on display, for sale and rental, such as pig and chicken roasters and smokers used by caterers. “The only brands we carry that aren’t entirely made in America are Alpha pizza grills from Italy and Memphis pellet grills, which are assembled in the U.S.,” says Schafer. “The ceramic for Big Green Egg is cast in Mexico because that’s where the clay is found.” Big Green Egg is the second-largest grill company in the world (after Weber) and BBQStore&More is its largest
Nearly every product in the huge showroom of The BBQStore&More is made in America, from grills and swing sets to patio furniture and gazebos.
showroom in the Midwest, says Schafer. “We stock every size grill and every part for every grill.” Fans of Big Green Egg like the quality and flavor of the food it produces, since it’s highly insulated, thereby preventing moisture from being drawn out of the food. It uses compressed hardwood charcoal with no lighter fluid or other chemical additives. The BBQStore&More staff offers grilling advice to customers upon request and even fields off-hours calls. “If you’re our customer and you’re grilling an expensive piece of meat at 7 p.m. and you have a question, you can bet we’ll answer the phone. That’s how we do things here.”
More than Grills
The store stocks a deep inventory of products, and parts for servicing those products, in its huge on-site warehouse. This was especially handy during supply chain problems in 2020 and 2021. The pandemic fueled an explosion of interest in backyard improvements, and BBQStore&More was able to meet needs not only with grills, but with nearly everything related to backyards. The business does landscape design and installation, construction of outdoor kitchens and firepits, structures like gazebos and sheds, swing sets and other large toys and poly patio furniture by companies including Lloyd Flanders, Luxcraft Outdoors and Star Swing Sets. BBQStore&More originated as a wooden swing set store 20 years ago. It established Eggfest 14 years ago and built its big new showroom and warehouse four years ago. Along with affiliated businesses such as its construction division, the business stretches across 80 acres “smack in the middle of Amish country,” but is only about 5 minutes from Fort Wayne. “We’re where rural meets city,” says Schafer. The store is open Mon.-Fri. from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturdays 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Learn more at thebbqst.com. ❚

Inspiration & Worship
‘It is Written’ T
here’s much we don’t understand about God. Paul notes this in his first letter to the Corinthians, 13:12 (KJV): For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known. That doesn’t mean we should give up trying! We can ask God to “open the eyes of our understanding” (Ephesisans 1:8) and commit to study of scripture. Respect for scripture demands that we don’t impose our own ideas onto it. Ye shall not add unto the word which I command you, neither shall ye diminish ought from it...” – Deuteronomy 4:2 (KJV). Here are some practical tips: Pay attention to the author of a section, to whom it was written and in what era. The Old Testament has much to teach us, but was written before the Messiah came to earth. The four Gospels reveal the words and actions of Jesus. The Book of Acts describes the birth and early decades of the church. All New Testament church letters were written to followers of Christ; some are directed to all Christians, including us. For example, Paul addresses Ephesians to believers in Ephesus “and faithful in Christ Jesus.” Others, like Philemon, are written to specific people to resolve a specific situation. Neither the author nor the recipient of Hebrews is clear, but we know its purpose is to strengthen the faith of Jews who’ve risked their lives by converting to Christianity. Capitalization, punctuation, verse numbers and chapter divisions didn’t exist in the earliest texts and many words were added to the English Bible so sentence structures would make sense. The 1611 King James version puts those added words into italics. It’s also important to view a verse in its cultural context. Our modern Western eyes can misunderstand ancient Eastern culture. A good Bible dictionary and map help. Jesus promised us the holy spirit would guide our understanding. He set the example by praying and quoting scripture to his followers, his accusers, and even to Satan: Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’” – Matthew 4:4. We should never feel intimidated about reading the Bible on our own. We are never alone. – Janine Pumilia 14

Solar Panels Can Save You Big Money By Janine Pumilia

olar panels aren’t for everyone, but when they’re a good fit for your situation, the energy savings can be remarkable, says Chuck Ault, co-owner and service manager for Collier’s Solar in Warsaw, Ind. Collier’s has been installing solar panels for 10 years and has seen interest in solar energy grow among local homeowners, schools and commercial businesses. “Solar panels have been around long enough now that people are feeling more comfortable and curious about them,” says Ault. “You need to have clear exposure to the south. And the upfront investment will take some years to pay for itself, so it’s not for homeowners who plan to move anytime soon.” If you can check those two boxes, however, “The savings down the road can be exponential, especially if you invest the money you’d otherwise be paying to utility companies.” Depending on how a customer approaches it, a solar panel system pays for There’s an upfront investment to install solar panels, but if you plan to stay in your home for the long term, savings on your utility bills can be exponential. How to Prolong the Life of Your Driveway By Peggy Werner
T
he dramatic impacts of below-freezing winter temperatures and stifling hot, humid Midwest summer days are an asphalt driveway’s biggest enemy, causing cracks and holes in the pavement. Kyle Miller, operations manager of Asphalt Maintenance Service, 6215 Commodity Ct., says filling those cracks right away and regular sealcoating are the most important maintenance procedures any homeowner can do to get the most life out of a driveway or parking lot. “If properly maintained, a driveway can last at least 25 years,” he says. “If not maintained, that lifespan will be cut in half or less.” He recommends sealcoating a home driveway and most commercial lots every three years and more often for heavily traveled asphalt parking lots. Crack filling prevents the seepage of moisture from snow and rain, helping
minimize the damage from freeze-thaw cycles. Sealed asphalt helps keep a clean look because rainfall washes away dirt and debris from the smooth surface. Asphalt Maintenance Service is a complete asphalt maintenance and repair family-owned company that has served the Fort Wayne, Northeast Indiana and Western Ohio areas for more than 37 years. The company specializes in sealcoating, crack filling, line striping and patching for residential and commercial customers. In 1980, Tom Sherwood started Asphalt Maintenance Service as the sole proprietor and employee in a 3,000square-foot building in downtown Fort Wayne. Rick and Laura Rohr purchased Asphalt Maintenance Service in 2004. Since then, they have grown the business to include 25 employees; 20 trucks, including four seal rigs; 15 pieces of heavy machin-
