Thanks, Dads
D
id you get your hair cut? “No, I got them all cut.” Sorry, I learned that one at my father’s knee – and more at other joints. Laughter is currency in our home. My family has always found joy in sharing jokes, and Dad has always been quick with a punch line. Now, he’s sharing that joy with his grandkids. It’s those small moments of delight and those hearty giggles that make the day brighter. In many ways, Dad has set a strong example, one I try to live up to every day. He’s strong, supportive, encouraging, playful and, when needed, tough, too. From our many adventures together, he’s taught me how to be a strong man, a loving husband, a dedicated dad, a creative mind and the best leader I can be. Sadly, not everyone has such a strong male influence. According to the National Fatherhood Initiative (fatherhood.gov), nearly 1 in 4 American children grow up without a father figure in their lives. A dad’s absence leaves a hole that’s hard to fill – which is why statistics show fatherless children are at greater risk of living in poverty, committing crimes, experiencing teenage pregnancy, facing abuse and neglect, abusing drugs and alcohol, and more. My heart breaks for these children – and for the men who are missing out. As a dad, I can tell you fatherhood is the greatest privilege and the most amazing blessing. There’s no joy quite like that of holding your newborn for the first time. There’s nothing quite so wonderful as watching them grow and explore. Feel that little hand clasp yours and try not to melt. Is being a dad scary? Sometimes. It’s also challenging and exhausting. But so is life. Yes, fatherhood requires self-sacrifice, putting the needs of these little humans first. And yet, I wouldn’t give it up for anything. Dad and I recently took my oldest for his first Cubs game. Three generations of us, all seated together and enjoying floods of memories from bygone baseball games, summers in Little League, and coaching our boys. It’s times like this when you know our children truly are a treasure. Chris Linden Executive Editor

Your Home
Remodel for Your Changing Lifestyle T
hree years ago, new kitchens and bathrooms were a top demand. These spaces were heavily used, and a showpiece made a strong impression when it came to selling the home. “But since families are now spending more time at home due to lifestyle changes, we are seeing other areas of the home become areas of interest, as well,” says Anna Leimann, a designer at Advance Design Studio, in Gilberts. “They’re looking for smart storage as well as visual interest in other areas of the home because of the amount of time they’re spending there.” In general, homeowners are looking to clean up and declutter their spaces. It’s especially true in the mudroom, where storage lockers, cubbies and benches keep everyone organized. Similar concepts work in the home office and basement.
Storage and decluttering are in very high demand in the kitchen, especially as people find themselves cooking more at home. Leimann learned to make sourdough with her extra time at home, and she finds many clients similarly need more pantry storage. Appliance garages contain clutter, while larder cabinets house a variety of functions. Across the Chicago suburbs, home remodelers are seeing a distinctive departure from the long-lasting trend of “everything gray.” Pops of blues, greens and yellows add some cheerfulness to a home and introduce a calming effect. Sources of texture, like patterned backsplashes, add some fun and personality, as well. “Homes are the place to relax with natural colors like whites, beiges and warm grays,” Leimann says. “We’ve seen a rise in pops of color and texture,

so hopefully this is a glimpse of the optimism people are feeling.” If you’re considering a remodel this year, plan ahead and be flexible. Contractors are spread thin, designers are in high demand, products are taking longer to ship, and costs are rising. Despite it all, there’s still good news. “With the housing market booming right now, homeowners are seeing nice returns from remodels,” says Leimann. ❚ Advance Design Studio is located at 30 Railroad St., Gilberts, (847) 8362600, AdvanceDesignStudio.com.

Inspiration & Worship
A Love Story S
tudents of the Bible know that God lavished David with a remarkable compliment when he described him as “a man after my own heart.” (I Sam. 13:14 & Acts 13:22). They also know it wasn’t because David’s behavior was always pristine. Far from it. God loved David because David loved God passionately. Rather than hiding after he sinned, as Adam and others tried to do, David clung to God’s embrace and begged forgiveness. He had faith in God’s mercy. He didn’t allow his sin to separate him from God. David loved spending time with God. He didn’t praise God out of duty; his wonder at God’s goodness and creation overflowed from his soul. David wanted to please his Creator. He found words inadequate, but tried his best to use them, along with music, dance and art, to express his love for God. Cause me to hear thy lovingkindness in the morning; for in thee do I trust: cause me to know the way wherein I should walk; for I lift up my soul unto thee. – Psalm 143:8 (KJV) In this one verse alone, David puts God first in his day, declares his trust in God, asks God to reveal His will and expresses his desire to “lift up his soul” to God. Other translations of the same verse: Let me experience Your faithful love in the morning, for I trust in You. Reveal to me the way I should go because I long for You. (Holman Christian Standard Bible) Let the morning bring me word of your unfailing love, for I have put my trust in you. Show me the way I should go, for to you I entrust my life. (New International Version.) What does it mean to ‘lift up our souls’ to God? Is it an emotion of the heart? A decision of the mind? An untethering of the weights which prevent us from leaping into God’s arms like a trusting child? God’s will is clear: He wants to love us and to be loved by us. About 1,000 years after David lived, a man asked Jesus Christ to name the greatest commandment of God. He said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the greatest and first commandment.” (Matthew 22:37 & 38) God loves us and asks us to love Him in return. How’s that going for us? ❚ – Janine Pumilia 14

By Pat Szpekowski re you looking for a family outdoor adventure that’s totally different, educational and loads of fun? Hickory Knolls Natural Area in St. Charles is open daily all year, from dawn to dusk. The St. Charles Park District has found a unique way to celebrate this hidden gem. Walking trails have an original walk-and-read children’s tale that shares the history of the land and the many animals that live in and around this scenic open space. “Hickory Knolls: A History of Our Home” follows Harley the hawk and Greta the grasshopper as they journey through the natural area. Along the way, Harley teaches Greta about efforts to preserve this special land they call home. “Kids will learn and pick up fun facts about the animals, plants and land,” says Erika Young, marketing manager for the
park district. “The walk-and-read story was inspired by Park Board Commissioner Bob Thomson. We took the idea and ran with it, and our St. Charles Park District marketing department created an entirely original story for Hickory Knolls.” While reading the story, children may see characters come to life. They might hear frog calls while reading Spencer the spring peeper’s explanation of metamorphosis. Or, they might witness monarch butterflies fluttering through the prairie near Archery Woods, while learning about restoration efforts that help pollinators to thrive. Creating this interactive experience was a way to bring attention to the beauty of the Hickory Knolls Natural Area and entice families to get outdoors. Designated as an Illinois Land & Water Reserve, this preserve stretches over 120 acres of prairies, woodlands, savannas, marshes

and more. It’s a quiet, peaceful and uncrowded preserve with a 2-mile trail. The story walk is an estimated ¾ of a mile. There are, indeed, many ways to celebrate the outdoors, breathe in the fresh air and unplug. “The St. Charles Park District provides a myriad of fun and distinctive experiences to engage the community,” adds Young. ❚ Hickory Knolls Natural Area is located at 3795 Campton Hills Road, in St. Charles. Cary-Area Plant Nursery Spreads its Roots B y J i m Ta y l o r, m u l t i m e d i a e d i t o r
With this move, Whispering Hills takes over The Barn Nursery’s retail building just off the corner of Illinois Route 31 and Rakow Road, where there will be more room to add merchandise, but also the ability to expand on the myriad of services this company already offers, including design services. In addition to its retail services, Whispering Hills provides hardscaping service, which comes with design and installation of features like pathways, walls, patios and fountains. This business expansion comes alongside another exciting development as the nursery’s new tree farm enters its second year. More than 2,000 trees are growing strong on the farm. This tree farm offers a wide variety of species that run the gambit from familiar to unique, including maple, crabapple, oak, cypress, birch, ginkgo and lilac.

fter 30 years of steady growth, Whispering Hills Garden & Landscape Center in Cary is giving its customers even more ways to beautify their outdoor spaces. This spring, Whispering Hills owners Al and Michelle Anderson purchased The Barn Nursery, their next-door neighbor and former competitor. The acquisition adds nearly 8 acres to Whispering Hills’ current 15-acre site. Prior to the sale, the two garden centers co-existed as friendly neighbors, despite competing for customers. Then, the Barn Nursery’s owner, Tom Kusmerz Sr., decided to fully retire and his son, Tom Kusmerz Jr., returned to his original passion of landscape architecture. The Andersons took an interest in developments. The property was up for sale for a few years before the Andersons made an offer.
Plans are in place to offer seasonal inventory during the holiday season, and Christmas tree sales are in the works for when the snow begins to fall. This is just the beginning; there’s plenty more to come in the year ahead. “There’s a lot of setup and painting that needs to happen before we move in,” says Michelle. “We figured it would be easier to give ourselves the winter to get all of that accomplished. Then, in spring, we’ll be ready to go.” ❚ Whispering Hills Garden & Landscape Center is located at 8401 S. Ill. Rt. 31 in Cary, (847) 658-5610.

Midsommar Fun: Geneva’s 72nd Swedish Days By Lindsey Gapen Lukas ll year long, residents of Geneva look forward to the annual Swedish Days Festival. Business owners plan for their best sales of the year, children anticipate the carnival and foodies of all ages salivate over Swedish options that put IKEA’s meatballs to shame. This year, Geneva’s 72nd Annual Swedish Days Festival runs Wednesday through Sunday, June 22-26. Laura Rush, communications manager for the Geneva Chamber of Commerce, which oversees the event, expects more than 200,000 people to attend throughout the week. “I love to see the smiles on faces, especially first-timers to the festival,” she says. “They not only discover Swedish Days, but many also discover Geneva for the first time.” Sweden in the late 1800s was overpopulated, says Terry Emma, executive director of the Geneva History Museum.

There weren’t enough jobs for everyone, and the poor soil in most of Sweden made it hard for families to make a living as farmers. This led to heavy emigration to the United States in the 19th and early 20th centuries, when approximately 1.3 million Swedes left for the United States. It was work on the railroad that brought the first wave of Swedish immigrants to Geneva in the 1850s, Emma adds. But the biggest influx of Swedes occurred between 1880 and 1900. By 1895, an estimated 50% of the city’s population was Swedish. The east side of Geneva was referred to as “over there in Sweden,” and Swedish was spoken in homes and on the streets until the 1900s. Most people who stop by Swedish Days weren’t even born when “Geneva Days” began more than 70 years ago, shortly after World War II ended. The retail division of the Geneva Chamber

of Commerce started a small promotion, where shoppers could find special bargains at local stores. After two years, it became known as “Swedish Days.” Ever since, activities have been introduced, removed or reintroduced, but a favorite event is the city’s “Geneva Settler’s Coffee,” where longtime residents (those who have lived here at least 15 years) get to enjoy breakfast and special recognition. Though the festival has changed, it’s still true to its original intention of encouraging people to shop local. Sales and bargains at local shops have been a part of every festival. These days, the grand parade on the final day is a major highlight. Eye-catching floats, talented community marching bands, prancing horses and other performers entertain for more than 2 hours. Nearly 45,000 people turn out, says Rush.

This year’s Swedish Days offers an abundance of free entertainment. Nightly musical acts on Central Stage kick off Wednesday. Festivalgoers are invited to lounge on the courthouse lawn while enjoying featured artists on Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday afternoons from 1-3 p.m. Additionally, the Swedish Days Car Show is back on South Third Street on Thursday from 5-8 p.m. This year the band Jaerv, from Sweden, headlines Saturday night’s activities. Some shops offer specials all week, but a must-visit shopping destination is
Sweden Väst, Rush adds. Picture an area of all things Swedish, including entertainment, vendors and food. This year, Stockholm’s Restaurant & Brewery is co-sponsoring Sweden Väst with Friends of the Viking Ship (FOVS). FOVS is a local organization dedicated to saving and preserving a replica Viking longship that sailed from Norway to Chicago for the World’s Fair in 1893. The ship can be viewed during the festival. “Sweden Väst is there to help reconnect us to our Scandinavian roots,” says Michael Olesen, owner of Stockholm’s Restaurant & Brewery. Food booths feature traditional Swedish fare in addition to American and ethnic foods, including brats, corn dogs, turkey legs, sandwiches, meatballs and pizza. The Geneva Settlers Breakfast is at Copper Fox, 477 S. Third St., on June 23 at 8:30 a.m. Dining downtown at casual bistros or formal, five-star eateries is also an option. Plus, beer gardens offer food, drink
and entertainment throughout the festival, including the Chamber’s Craft Beer Tent on James Street. The carnival is open every day, and each day offers an unlimited ride wristband. Young visitors can also enjoy favorites such as a dodgeball tournament, 3-on-3 basketball tournament and minigolf. June 24 is Kids’ Day where, from early in the morning to late into the night, kids can stay entertained, Rush adds. The Swedish Days 5K Lopp takes place Thursday, June 23 at 7 p.m. at the Northwestern Medicine Cross Country Course. And of course, the grand parade takes place on Sunday afternoon. Geneva locals swell with pride when reminiscing about Swedish Days. It’s an event that makes them both proud to call this community home. “I love Swedish Days,” says Oleson. “I have always loved everything about it.” For information on Swedish Days, contact Geneva Chamber of Commerce, 8 S.
