Flowers for Mom

S

pring always brings to our house a lawn full of cheery yellow flowers. Dandelions flock to our yard like mosquitos on a hot summer night. The children love it. Any time we’re outside – and that’s often, in our household – they scoop up heaping handfuls of the sunny flower. Their little faces beam with delight as they place a flower in my hand. Most times, they follow with a simple request: Can we bring this to Mom? We learn from an early age that Mom loves flowers. Bright, cheerful bunches of them make her smile. I learned this lesson in my childhood, too, when Dad’s gardens overflowed with lush flowers and colors of all kinds. Pick a handful of blossoms, make a custom bouquet and watch Mom light up. She’s helpless against the cacophony of colors and the scintillating scents. Mother’s Day is here, and it’s as good a time as ever to show Mom a little love. Heaven knows we give her enough grief every other day of the year. When we’re tiny, she feeds us, snuggles us and cleans up after us. When we’re older, she’s still cooking, cleaning and corralling us. How does she do it all? Seems like a handful of flowers is the least we can do to show her a little love. Maybe a few random acts of service can show our appreciation, too. Maybe a big hug will brighten up her day. Perhaps she needs to hear a simple “I love you,” or a “You’re the best, Mom!” And while you’re at it, why not share a little quality time with Mom? Something as simple as a shared cup of coffee can mean the world to her. I still cherish the memories of meals spent with my grandmothers and times we spent together cooking in the kitchen. I still sneak away for lunches with Mom whenever I can. My wife is the first to get snuggles in the morning, and she’s always seeking new adventures with our little ones. For all of the ways she brightens up our lives, it’s worth reminding her that she’s our sunshine, too. Don’t you think? Chris Linden Executive Editor

Inspiration & Worship

Pulling Weeds T

here’s something so satisfying about pulling an entire dandelion plant out of your lawn, from fuzzy yellow head to long, tapered root. Leave just an inch of that anemic white root in place, however, and you’re soon right back where you started. Likewise, sins are something we must work to dig out of our souls by their deep roots. A surface mowing looks nice for a day or two, but those fuzzy yellow heads will pop back up in no time. We can fool people, but we can’t fool God. Because he lived in a mostly agrarian society, Jesus Christ often used parables about growing plants. Rooting out the sin that distances us from God and pruning useless branches are common themes: “I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes so that it will be even more fruitful. You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you. Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me. I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. If you do not remain in me, you are like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned. If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. This is to my Father’s glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples. As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love. If you keep my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commands and remain in his love. I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete. My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you.” (John 15:1-12 NIV) ❚

Your Home

Reduce Fading, Solar Heat with Glass Tint R

ays of sunshine are a welcome sight any day of the year, especially when you’re enjoying time outdoors. Are you aware, though, that the glare of the sun and excessive light in your home can fade your curtains, furniture and decorative items, and it can even affect your home’s energy efficiency? Professional window tinting offers a lowcost solution while solving a few other problems, such as security and privacy. “Window films extend the life of furniture by reducing fading and by blocking excessive glare on TV screens and computers,” says Jim Spizzirri, sales director for AAA Glass Tint in Crystal Lake. “Plus, decorative films can help with privacy needs and security problems.” There are a wide variety of window films in the marketplace, from clear options that block only UV light to dark options like you’d see on a car, or

decorative options with patterns and logos. Spizzirri and his team offer expert suggestions to homeowners who are unaware of the specifics. “Solar Control Films are very clear, letting 80% of the visible light through, while rejecting 40% of the total solar energy,” he says. “There are other films that can reduce 95% of the light and reduce 79% of the total solar energy.” The mission of AAA Glass Tint is to find the best solution for your home’s solar glare, UV protection, fade prevention, and heat reduction/retention problems. It’s been the top priority since this family-owned business opened in 1984. “When homeowners call AAA Glass Tint, our team listens to the homeowners’ needs,” Spizzirri says. “Window films solve several problems homeowners have that are caused by the sun. Solar Control films are the most popular, as these films

reduce heat and light and reduce fading. AAA Glass Tint is certified to install thicker security window films, too.” Spizzirri encourages customers to ask questions, and they most often ask how long a film will last. Installation can typically be done in a few hours. “Films are made to last. Many of our products have lifetime warranties for the original owner,” adds Spizzirri. “Homeowners will be delighted to know we have a range of products for all budgets.” ❚ AAA Glass Tint is located at 930 Pyott Road, Crystal Lake, (815) 216-4203.

Fields Full of Color at Local Tulip Festivals By Katie Gray

I

n her wildly popular 2018 TED Talk, designer and author Ingrid Fettell Lee reveals that bright colors, curved silhouettes and symmetry are scientifically proven to cheer us up. Families are eager for fun in the springtime sun, and seeing as nature’s colorful hues and soft shapes make us healthier and happier, now might be the perfect time for a flower-filled family tradition. Though many of us associate tulips with Holland, the flower is actually native to central Asia. Tulips began to move west around 1000 A.D. when sultans added large beds of them to palace gardens. Once the bulbs reached Holland in the 1500s, the plant’s popularity skyrocketed. To this day, Holland is still the world’s largest producer of tulips. Fortunately for us, beautiful displays of these flowers are now in our region,

24

where two family farms have planted a combined 900,000 bulbs. These eye-catching flowers only bloom for around three weeks, so these tulip festivals won’t last for long.

Richardson Adventure Farm

Homesteaded in 1836, this Spring Grovearea farm has been in the family for generations. What began as a 240-acre plot has grown to encompass 540 acres today. Richardson Adventure Farm has long been a place for families to get lost in a corn maze, hunt for pumpkins and Christmas trees, and even go ziplining. And in 2021, the farm became even more irresistible with the addition of sunflower and tulip fields. As many as 600,000 tulip bulbs, spanning 40 varieties, have been planted for this year, ensuring Richardson’s 2022 Tulip Festival will be awe-inspiring.

Richardson Adventure Farm

“I am overjoyed at the thousands of people who come to our farm and have a wonderful time,” says co-owner George Richardson. “The positive comments and emails we get make me happy to think that so many people are getting joy out of this. We need joy in our lives.” Guests can walk through the fields, take pictures, and even pick their own tulips in designated areas. While Richardson is proud of the tulip fields, he’s also excited about the updated gift shop. Homemade popcorn and doughnuts, desserts from local bakeries,

freshly brewed coffee, and wine are on the menu. Families also can walk along the farm’s 36-acre lake and challenge each other to a game of giant checkers, Connect Four, Jenga or bags. Plus, there’s live music Saturday and Sunday afternoons. Tickets for Richardson Adventure Farm cost $12 per person Tuesday through Friday and $15 on weekends. Admission includes one free tulip per person. Kids age 3 and under are free. For more information and to buy tickets online, head to richardsonadventurefarm.com.

What started as a 71-acre pumpkin patch in 1998 is now a thriving family farm, complete with an orchard, animal attractions and family-friendly fall activities. Given the Kuipers family’s Dutch heritage, it’s fitting they’d add a sprawling field of tulips into the mix. Set on more than 5 acres near Maple Park, the tulip display at Kuipers Family Farm is bursting with color from more than 300,000 bulbs in more than 20 varieties. “It’ll be spectacular to see so many flowers blooming at the same time,” says Kim Kuipers, co-owner of the farm. “Each block of flowers is a consistent color, and there are many, many colors. You get that giant pop of color, but the design is like a rolling fan. It will be stunning.” Kuipers is opening 15 other farm-themed attractions, too, and most are included with admission. Kids will love riding down the Mountain Slide and hopping on the Jumping Pillow. Visitors can also expect to see a variety of

animals, including baby chickens, ducks, rabbits and goats. There’s also food, entertainment, hard cider and wine, doughnuts, and other farm-made favorites. “People are so hungry to get out and gather again,” Kuipers adds. “It’s been a long winter, and people want to go outside, do something fun, and enjoy spring in the Midwest.” Tickets can be purchased on the farm’s website, youpickfun.com. Admission costs $12 per person Monday-Friday and $15 on weekends when purchased online; the cost goes up by $3 per person at the gate. Kids age 2 and under are free.

Waiting on Nature

Both farms expect to be fully open by Mother’s Day, but that depends on the weather and flowers. Check each farm’s website and social media for the latest. ❚ Richardson Adventure Farm is located at 909 English Prairie Road, in Spring Grove. Mini-Golf and More at Pottawatomie Park I

f you walk through Pottawatomie Park in St. Charles and see someone on the mini-golf green putting backward or swinging the club between their legs, it’s not that they have bad form. They’re just doing what a charming green frog named Stanley told them to do. Eight of the 18 holes that make up the River View Miniature Golf Course feature Stanley’s Spin-N-Play. Stanley’s quickly reaching mascot status at the park, and he’s as cute as he is silly. Golfers brave enough to accept his challenge can spin the wheel to determine whether they’ll have to putt standing on one foot, putt with just one hand, spin around five times before putting, or do some other wacky action. If you want a sneak peek at what awaits you on the green, head to the St. Charles Park District’s website for a hole-

by-hole gallery. With names like Dead Man’s Curve, Logger’s Run and Blindman’s Bluff, each stop on this course is uniquely trying. There’s still plenty to do inside the park when your golf game ends. Treat the kids to some ice cream or a jumbo pretzel from the refreshment stand, pedal up and down the Fox River on a four-person swan boat, or change into your swimsuit and splash around at Swanson Pool. Miniature Golf Supervisor Sabrina Hunley says her team has planned several new family-friendly events for Pottawatomie Park’s 2022 season, including Stanley’s Park Pursuit and a Princess and the Frog night at Swanson Pool. And when September rolls around, some spooky Halloween-inspired events are in store. “Stanley’s Park Pursuit is something everyone can participate in, even the little

ones,” Hunley says. “We’ll set up a bunch of little challenges throughout the park, playground and mini-golf course. Families can complete the challenges and then play a round of mini-golf afterward for free.” With so many ways to play, Pottawatomie Park may easily become your family’s staycation destination this summer. Check riverviewminigolf.org and swansonpool.org for more information. ❚ River View Miniature Golf Course is located at 8 North Ave., in St. Charles, (630) 584-1028.

Patio Furniture that’s Durable, Sustainable By Stephanie N. Grimoldby urniture made from recycled materials is a popular patio trend right now, and it’s not just because these products are eco-friendly. PolyTuf is a recycled plastic lumber made by Tangent, and it’s 95 percent postconsumer recycled material. “They recycle milk jugs and plastic bottles and convert them into pellets and mold them into chairs and other furniture,” says Steve Olson, vice president of Viking Ski and Patio in Barrington. Olson sells the Berlin Gardens line of patio furniture, which is made from PolyTuf. Besides the eco-friendly factor, PolyTuf furniture is heavier than many other plastic patio furnishings. “It has a lot more weight to it, so you don’t have to worry about it blowing away,” says Olson. “We provide furniture to a lot of customers with piers and lake houses.”

F

But what really sells people is its low-maintenance quality, which goes hand-in-hand with its waterproof, UV-resistant and mold-, mildew- and bug-free surface. “You just take a hose and hose it off,” says Olson. “If you get a little more dirt on it, a soft scrub brush cleans it right up and it’s ready to go.” When PolyTuf first came out, the only pieces available were Adirondack chairs. Today, the line offers dining sets, sofas, cushions and deep-seat chairs. The company has even added fire pits, with the fire bowl strategically spaced so the heat can’t reach the recycled plastic. “They keep coming up with new designs and changes as they work with the material more,” Olson says. Before you visit the patio store, remember to take measurements of the outdoor space you wish to accessorize.

Tell them you saw it in ...

You’ll need approximately 2.5 to 3 feet around each side of a table for chairs, Olson says. And don’t forget the walkway – save 2 to 3 feet for walking space around the furniture, as well. “Cramming too much in a space is the biggest mistake customers make, plus forgetting about walkways,” Olson says. “You’re usually carrying drinks and little serving trays, so you don’t want to have to try to wedge through everywhere.” ❚ Viking Ski and Patio is located at 131 W. Your Auto Care

The Simple Necessity of Oil Changes By Jack Shields, JAX Auto & Tire

T

he most simple and basic of all vehicle maintenance is the oil change. This oil does many things for your engine. It cools, it lubricates, and it helps start your engine. The better you treat your engine, the better it will treat you. There are so many brands and types of oil that it can be very confusing for the typical car owner to know what they’re getting. The two most specific and mainstream oils today are semi-synthetic (also known as synthetic blend oils) and full synthetic oils. What’s the difference? Semi-synthetic motor oil is refined from fossil fuels. Semi-synthetic gets its name because it’s a blend of crude oil, chemical additives and detergents, meaning this product is partially manmade. Synthetic motor oil, however, is fully manmade using chemical compounds that mimic the best aspects of crude oil.

As a result, synthetic oil contains much fewer contaminants, which leads to a lower risk of engine sludge and buildups. Plus, synthetic oils have a higher scorch temperature and they better withstand freezing temperatures. There many opinions on when your oil needs to be changed. The owner’s manual says one thing, but the dealerships, repair centers and quick-lubes all say something different. Speaking as an ASE-certified auto technician who has 34 years in the automotive repair industry, I can tell you what I see and what I fix on a daily basis. Would you rather trust your technician or engineers who have only the manufacturer’s interests in mind? The bottom line is that your engine is a piece of machinery that produces friction in high-temperature situations. That oil reduces the wear and tear of metal-on-

metal friction. As the oil breaks down due to heat, contaminants and internal engine combustion, it loses its lubricating qualities. Less lubrication means more wear and tear to your engine. Keep your engine happy and listen to the professionals. Change your semi-synthetic oil at 3,000 miles or three months. Change synthetic oils every 6,000 miles or six months. Even if the owner’s manual suggests you can go farther, doing so is risking your engine. ❚ JAX Auto & Tire is located at 5220 S. Ill. Rt. 31, in Crystal Lake, (815) 5263552.

Dining Out

The Anvil Club Delights Inside and Out I f you see The Anvil Club’s general manager, Joe Robinson, at just the right time there’s a good chance you can join his tour of the historic restaurant in East Dundee. Guests are often surprised not only by The Club’s origins as a blacksmith shop but by the way it has been expansively transformed from gritty beginnings into the Fox Valley’s premier fine-dining institution and banquet venue. Over 65 years of improvements have produced an intimate, warmly elegant destination that is The Anvil Club. From its Saddle Room, which draws on The Club’s equestrian past, to the Board Room, which feels like a C-Suite executive dining room, there are a variety of delightful spaces to enjoy. Sparky’s Hideout and Bar on the lower level has a speakeasy vibe. The Wine Cellar is a private dining room complete with dozens

of enameled cast-iron wine lockers that offer keyholders an exclusive set of benefits. And, yes, The Anvil Club’s Piano Lounge Bar is truly legendary. There is, however, one special place that summertime brings to the fore at The Anvil Club because there is nothing quite like dining under the stars on the club’s Veranda. This is not like al fresco dining alongside a busy street in the city. Rather, the ambiance of the Club’s Veranda is that of a secret garden, walled and bedecked with flowers. The Anvil Club, which is now open to the general public, opens its Veranda for the summer season on May 26. Executive Chef Tino Almaraz is designing a Veranda menu that makes good use of The Anvil Club’s brick oven. Gourmet flatbread and other summery delights will be featured. Ask the Right Questions Before Plastic Surgery By Jim Taylor, multimedia editor

A

lmost everyone looks in the mirror and wonders about making an unappealing feature go away. Cosmetic surgery is a safe and reliable option but, like all medical procedures, it should be approached with careful consideration. From minor work, like Botox and filler injections, to major procedures like facelifts, reductions or augmentations, the more you know, the more positive your outcome will be. “I always recommend people start by getting some opinions,” says Dr. Phil Lambruschi, a plastic surgeon with more than 40 years of experience. “Most plastic surgeons don’t charge for consultations.” Lambruschi’s practice, Valley Plastic Surgery, in West Dundee, offers a free consultation to potential patients. It’s a chance for Lambruschi and the patient to connect and establish a plan. This consultation is also a great time to ask questions

about the work and whether it’s the right work to do. Lambruschi emphasizes the importance of thinking long-term. Many of the minor procedures, like Botox or fillers, last only a few months and require frequent trips to the clinic for upkeep. “I see a lot of clients who think that Botox or fillers are a ‘facelift in a syringe,’ and they’re not,” he says. “In some cases, a full facelift is better than a number of minor procedures.” Lambruschi also points out that it’s best to stay realistic. “If you’re 61 years old, you’re never going to get back to looking 21,” he says. “But we will try to make you look great for your age.” Most clinics, Valley Plastic Surgery included, offer a variety of financing options. For work that’s covered by medical insurance, check to see if your prospective surgeon works with your carrier.

Insurance may also determine where the procedure takes place. By sitting with your surgeon, listening carefully to your options, and expressing your goals, looking in the mirror can be a much more rewarding experience. It’s always good to have knowledge under your belt before going under the knife. For a free consultation, contact Valley Plastic Surgery at (847) 836-3200 or valleyplasticsurgery.com. ❚ Valley Plastic Surgery is located at 350 S. Eighth St. (Ill. Rt. 31), West Dundee, (847) 836-3200.

Unplug in Comfort at Kishauwau Cabins T

here are times when you just want to get off the grid and leave the daily grind behind. Kishauwau Cabins, in Tonica, Ill., is the perfect environment to get away to the great outdoors and savor a peaceful setting. These 17 beautifully constructed cabins vary in size and are spread throughout a 65-acre wooded property. The views are unrivaled from this bluff above the Vermillion River, in a spot that’s roughly 100 miles from Chicago, with close proximity to Starved Rock State Park and the busy city of Ottawa. “We like to say we are the perfect place for an unplugged vacation and a social distancing getaway,” says Terisa King, co-owner of Kishauwau Cabins with her husband Jamie. “We are so pleased that we have guests who return year after year, whether for a romantic escape, family

reunion, or even a corporate teambuilding retreat. Furry friends are welcome, too, in our dog-friendly cabins.” Whether or not you’re an active outdoors fan, the cabins exude quaintness and country charm with the modern conveniences of home. Each cabin is equipped with central air and furnace heating, enabling them to stay comfortable year-round. Fully equipped kitchens include basic pots and pans, cooking utensils and dishes. Since you’re out in the country, why not enjoy an evening in front of your private, outdoor bonfire pit and picnic table, then grill up your favorite foods and roast a few s’mores by the fire? There’s always something new for guests at Kishauwau Cabins, and this May 20-23, visitors are treated to a Campfire Concert featuring popular country artist
