Making Resolutions

HappyNew Year! The holiday season can be chaotic, but I hope you were able to enjoy some relaxing and restorative moments during the past several weeks.

I’ve been thinking lately about New Year’s resolutions. Personally, I’ve never been great at keeping them. I do a wonderful job at sticking to my goals in January, but by February or March, it’s over — I’ve fallen off the wagon.

Generally, my resolutions have focused on exercising more often (so cliche) and reading more books. I like how I feel after working out, and I love getting lost in historical fiction, a memoir, or “Harry Potter” for the millionth time. But making daily time for fitness or for reading can oftentimes become a guilt-trap. I always feel like there’s something “productive” I should be doing for work or for my family. So this year, my resolution (if you want to call it that) is to banish the mom-guilt I feel for taking time to myself. It’s not necessarily about using my time to do specific things… it’s more about recognizing when it’s okay to spend my time however I choose.

And hey, maybe I’ll finally get into audiobooks this year.

Something else I’d like to continue this next year is using weekends for quality family time, and editing this magazine always gives me the best ideas. After speaking with Mike Hardiek for our cover story, I can guarantee the Mizpah Shrine Circus, happening Jan. 27-29 in Fort Wayne, will be a fun, family-friendly activity. One of the things I love most about parenting is experiencing the world through my child’s eyes. My toddler has no idea what the circus is, but I have a feeling he’ll love it. My parents, also, get a kick out of bringing their grandson to new places. It will be a fun time for all of us, and ticket prices are very reasonable. If you’d like to bring your family, too, see our cover story for more information.

I’m hopeful 2023 will be a great year overall. Wishing you and your families a happy, healthy and exciting year ahead! ❚

to take in the breathtaking views of the Mississippi River valley. Add in details like fresh cookies and flowers that greet visitors in every suite, and a stay at Goldmoor seems like a page from a fairy tale.

Despite being only 6 miles from the town of Galena, the Goldmoor, located at 9001 W. Sand Hill Road, is a world all its own. In the winter months, it can feel like the inside of a snow globe and is a prime location to watch wintering eagles dive for their dinner along the Mississippi River. In warmer times, the sweeping landscape offers stunning vistas for a photograph, a social media post, or even just a quiet memory to tuck away for a rainy day. Bird lovers will want to watch the skies for a variety of birds. Binoculars are available at the front desk for anyone wanting a closer look. At sunset, the sky steals the show with breathtaking displays of color and dying light.

While landscape, decor and views offer a feast for the eyes, the fine-dining experience in the Goldmoor’s dining room provides one of a different kind. Executive chef Brandon Veitch concocts a lavish creation with each dish, elevating the food he serves with each meal. An upscale, yet cozy dining experience, Goldmoor Inn’s menu is not just for the stomach, but also for the soul.

Whatever the occasion, a stay at the Goldmoor Inn is a five-star experience. ❚

Functional Medicine Can Improve Thyroid Conditions

For those who’ve been diagnosed with thyroid disease, successful treatment can depend on more than standard medications alone.

Dr. Lucas D. Gafken, DC, DACNB, a chiropractic neurologist at Health N.O.W., says functional medicine utilizes natural solutions for hypothyroidism which can not only improve energy levels, weight control and thyroid function, but also can improve underlying conditions that interact.

In his clinic at 2146 State Road 8 in Auburn, Ind., Gafken helps patients to improve upon standard thyroid treatment.

“I usually see patients with a low thyroid function condition that begins between the ages of 35 and 65,” he says. “We approach their treatment with discussion about food sensitivities, inflammation, vitamin deficiencies, and gut or adrenal imbalances.”

Gafken integrates traditional western methods with innovative practices from eastern cultures to identify root causes of underlying conditions. He develops a customized plan to influence and improve seemingly unrelated symptoms including night

sweats, heart palpitations, fatigue, weight gain and more.

“We conduct blood and saliva tests to pinpoint thyroid hormone imbalances, food sensitivities as well as other forms of dysfunction,” Gafken says. “We also address lifestyle changes and detoxification of the liver and other vital organs. We can improve a sluggish liver’s function and aid in the recycling process to more efficiently cleanse the body.”

Hormone imbalances can directly affect the thyroid’s operation, Gafken explains. An imbalance in estrogen or testicular hormones can be corrected, helping patients to feel healthier.

“Vitamin deficiencies are also key to helping patients control thyroid issues as well as overall health benefits,” Gafken says. “If adrenal glands are not functioning properly, patients can experience poor sleep and wake up feeling tired. Patients struggle with gut problems or what we call leaky gut. Products like ginseng, vitamins B and D, and others can aid in easing these symptoms.”

A Lighter Burden

The 2022 holiday season is behind us. Good-hearted, worn-out people who “made the season bright” for young and old alike are returning to their usual hectic routines. Many of these folks are part of “the sandwich generation,” playing key roles at home and work alike. Often they devote energy and care to everyone but themselves. Doctors tell us busy women are especially prone to self-neglect, both physically and emotionally. The same holds true spiritually. Staffing a church committee or making the coffee after a service are no replacement for personal spiritual enrichment.

Scripture tells us to serve one another in love, but it’s always in the context of allowing God to be our strength. That means spending time with God in scripture and prayer. No one can do this for us and no amount of good works are a substitute.

In Luke 10:38-42, Jesus tells Martha not to sacrifice her own spiritual life in the name of performing physical tasks for others around her.

“Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, but few things are needed – or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.” (Luke 10:41 & 42, NIV)

It’s hard not to feel a little sorry for Martha. Her intentions are good. We easily identify with her resentment at feeling stuck with all the work. But Jesus loves Martha and knows what she needs most: time with him.

In contrast, Mary “seated herself at the Lord’s feet and was continually listening to His teaching.” (Luke 10:39)

One thing above all is needful in our lives: continual fellowship with Jesus Christ.

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest,” Jesus promises. “Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” (Matthew 11:28-30)

Here’s to a restful 2023!

Mizpah Shrine Circus to ‘Wow’ All Ages

Fort Wayne’s annual circus extravaganza is back Jan. 2729 at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum, 4000 Parnell Ave.

The Mizpah Shrine Circus, which aims to entertain both adults and children alike, promises family-friendly entertainment from start to finish, says Mike Hardiek, member of the Mizpah Shrine Circus Committee. Five shows in total will take place Friday at 7 p.m., Saturday at 10 a.m., 2:30 p.m., and 7 p.m., and Sunday at 2 p.m.

“This year, we are happy to present a perfect blend of both traditional circus acts as well as never-before-seen thrill acts,” Hardiek says. “From high wire performers to electrifying motorcycle stunts, there is something for everyone. We take great pride in creating something that the grandparents will enjoy as much as the kids.”

Make sure to arrive an hour before showtime and stay an hour after to enjoy the Free Circus Fair, taking place in the lower level of the Coliseum.

“When you arrive, simple proceed straight ahead instead of traveling up the escalators,” Hardiek says. “Once in the lower level, you can see the elephants up close and delight in the ex-

citement of many attractions.” At the Free Circus Fair, guests can purchase tokens to enjoy activities such as face painting, a bounce house, petting zoo, Peg Perego racetrack, caricature portraits and pony rides.

The main circus event has a long list of attractions, including elephants, tigers, camels, clowns, high wire acts, aerial artistry, feats of dexterity, canine capers, high wire balancing, flying trapeze artists, dare devil acts and more. The performance lasts approximately 2 hours with a 15-minute intermission.

“Unfortunately, in today’s world, kids spend a lot of time looking at a phone screen. They miss the wonderful things that are happening around them. The circus offers us all a chance to lose ourselves for a couple of hours in a world full of excitement and wonder,” Hardiek says. “My favorite part of the circus each year is watching grandparents reconnect with their grandkids –to see how parents laugh with their kids and hold their breath during the thrill acts. The only phones being used are to record memories that will last a lifetime.”

Photos are allowed before, during and after the performance, however, flash photography during the show is prohibited.

Tickets start at $16 and can be purchased online through

Ticketmaster or at the Memorial Coliseum box office. Children under age 2 do not require a ticket. Handicapped seating is available to those who purchase the option, and group/corporate rates are available by calling the box office. Parking is $8 per vehicle paid to the attendant in the Coliseum parking lot.

Hardiek urges guests to not be fooled by overpriced ticket sites that are popping up.

“This is our single largest problem,” he says. “Unfortunately, there are some unscrupulous websites that advertise that our tickets start at a much higher price than they truly are. They purchase the tickets and then resell them at a huge markup. You can purchase tickets through Ticketmaster and at the Memorial Coliseum. We never sell out, so you can purchase them when you arrive the day of the show.”

The Mizpah Shrine Circus is made possible by a committee, but credit is also given to Shriners who volunteer countless hours throughout the year, Hardiek says.

“On Sunday after the last performance, they are tired and weary, but they know they made a difference in the lives of our guests,” Hardiek adds. “It is the hundreds of men and women who give their time and efforts that really make the Mizpah Shrine Circus possible.”

The Mizpah Shriners represent just one of the 191 Shrine centers from all around the world and are made up of more than 2,000 Master Masons from throughout Northeast Indiana.

“You probably know one,” Hardiek says. “Shriners are involved in many other charitable groups throughout your community. We love to have fun as we support the Shrine Hospitals for Children. We believe no man stands as tall as when he stoops to help a child.”

Proceeds from the circus benefit the Mizpah Shrine. For more information about the circus, visit mizpahshrinecircus.com or call the box office at (260) 483-1111.

“The Mizpah Shriners are proud to host Northeast Indiana’s longest running family tradition,” Hardiek adds. “For 76 years, we have created an event that brings families together to remember what it is like to be a kid again, no matter what their age. We do everything we can to make the circus affordable so that everyone can enjoy it. We believe every child should be able to enjoy the circus.” ❚

Are You Ready to ‘Unretire’?

Have you recently retired but are now thinking of going back to work? If so, you aren’t alone, as many people are choosing to “unretire.” But if you do reenter the workforce in some capacity, what opportunities might be available to you? And how will your renewed employment affect your financial outlook?

For starters, though, what reasons might motivate you to go back to work? For many people, the primary cause has been inflation, which has presented a huge challenge to retirees living on a fixed income. In addition, the volatile financial market of 2022 caused many people’s investment portfolios to decline in value – a real problem for retirees who needed to start selling investments to supplement their income.

But non-financial factors could also be driving you to unretire. Like other retirees, you may miss the chance to use your work experience to engage with the world, and you may miss the social interactions as well.

In any case, if you do decide to rejoin the working world in some fashion, you may have several options. For example, if you enjoyed the work you did for your former employer, you might want to see if you could go back on a part-time basis. Or you could use your skills to join the “gig” economy by doing some consulting or freelance work in your former industry. You might also consider going to work for a nonprofit organization, as many of these groups lost employees during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic and are now facing labor shortages.

Going back to work, even part time, can improve your cash flow, which helps cover the cost of regular expenses. Furthermore, the added income can possibly help you delay or reduce withdrawals from your investment accounts. And it’s important to increase the longevity of these accounts considering you may spend two, or even three, decades in retirement. (Once you turn 72, however, you will have to start withdrawing certain amounts from your 401(k) and traditional IRA.) But your earnings can affect another source of your retirement income – your Social Security benefits.

If you return to work before your “full” retirement age, which is likely between 66 and 67, the Social Security earnings limit in 2023 is $21,240. For each $2 earned over that amount, Social Security will deduct $1 from benefits. If you reach your full retirement age in 2023, the earnings limit is $56,520; Social Security will deduct $1 from your benefits for each $3 earned

over this amount until the month you turn your full retirement age. But in all future years after you’ve reached your full retirement age, you can earn as much as you want without losing any benefits. Social Security will then recalculate your payments to give you credit for the months your benefits were reduced or withheld due to your excess earnings. Be aware, though, that your earned income can potentially result in higher taxes on your Social Security benefits at any age.

Returning to work can be rewarding, both financially and emotionally. And you may get more out of the experience when you’re aware of the issues involved. ❚

Finding All of Your Home Furnishings

Under new ownership just over a year ago, Stucky’s Furniture & Appliance in Fort Wayne has made some big changes, but one thing remains the same – a commitment to the best customer service possible.

Those efforts have been rewarded with 16 consecutive years of being voted the “best appliance store in Fort Wayne,” by local newspaper readers.

Since Bill and Polly Shuee, and his brother and sister-in-law Brent and Lori, purchased the family-owned business exactly a year ago, they have done some major remodeling and updating in the store to include a furniture line, new signage, a new name (formerly Stucky Bros.), energy efficient LED lighting, and more.

“This place has longevity and we are just trying to reinvigorate this grand old brand name and give it a fresh, new look,” says Bill Shuee. “We want to be a one-stop-shop for customers who want home furnishings. We take care of our customers the way we would like to be taken care of.”

The store sells to homeowners, contractors and remodelers. Stucky’s is celebrating its 108th anniversary this October and de-

tails are being worked out on how to thank the community for their support, he says.

Stucky’s has also expanded the on-staff team of delivery, installation and repair service professionals and have devoted about 15,000 square feet of space in a 40,000-square-foot showroom to furniture, including mattresses and electronics.

Appliances account for the majority of their sales and they offer many midline brands as well as premium lines like Sub-Zero and Wolf. For the bargain hunter, there is the “bargain barn” with reduced prices on appliances with dings and dents, but still covered under warranty and eligible for service.

The Shuee brothers are not new to the furniture and appliance business. Since 1987, they’ve managed a Greencastle, Ind. appliance store established in 1970 by their late father, Bob Shuee. They also own a furniture store in Greencastle, a furniture and appliance store in Brazil and an appliance store in Lafayette, Ind.

The brothers have a total of six children, five of whom are already working in the family business.

“We’re hoping the next generations will continue to operate as we have for as long as possible,” Shuee says. ❚

Current Trends in Home Renovation

Founded in the historic district of New Haven more than 60 years ago, Trinity Kitchen, Bath and Lighting, 11034 Lincoln Highway E, has evolved through the years to be a “one-stop shop” for home renovation.

Owner Kevin Walsh bought the business 18 years ago with plans to breathe new life into it with new product lines, increased sales, improved relationships with existing customers, and by bringing in new customers.

Five years ago, Walsh opened a lighting center in Indianapolis and meanwhile changed the name of the New Haven store to reflect the growth that had taken place from adding cabinets, countertops and other products for home renovation.

“Since the pandemic, more people are spending time at home and wanting to update and renovate their kitchens and baths,” Walsh says. “It’s been great for our business in recent years. I’ve always wanted to own a small business and when this opportunity came along, I liked the product and wanted to build on what was already here.”

Today, there are still some issues with the supply chain, but it’s not as bad as it was a year ago. Price increases, too, seem to have settled down, Walsh says. He believes that anyone can do a home renovation, not just those with a large budget.

“We offer great, quality products and can work within any budget, whether wanting to save money or make a dream come true,” he says. “It doesn’t have to be a matter of deciding to do it or not do it. You can go with fewer features and still have a good result.”

Designer Anna Francis Biz says homeowners who want to create a different look usually begin their kitchen renovations with new countertops. They’ll also often add an island for more meal preparation space and storage.

The most popular flooring choices right now are durable and easy-to-clean hardwood or luxury vinyl, and cabinets are trending toward darker colors like deep blue and black-brown, Biz adds. Today, tile is mainly used for backsplashes, she says.

“Light, bright and interesting” is the goal of most people who want to renovate a bathroom, Biz continues. Ceramic and porcelain tiles in various shapes and patterns can be used throughout the entire bathroom. Light colors make a room look bigger and are most often accented with dark hardware for cabinets, faucets and shower heads, usually stainless steel with a black matte finish.

A Saturation of Winter

Savor This Heart-Healthy Family Meal

Making small changes to focus on your health, like following a healthy eating plan, can make a big difference in protecting your heart.

Developed by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) is a flexible and balanced eating plan that helps create a heart-healthy eating style for life. It requires no special foods, and instead provides daily and weekly nutritional goals to help lower two major risk factors for heart disease: high blood pressure and high LDL (bad) cholesterol.

As an added bonus, sharing DASH-friendly meals with your loved ones can help take the guesswork out of putting nutritious dinners on your family’s table. For example, this easy and delicious Turkey and Beef Meatballs with WholeWheat Spaghetti recipe is one the entire family can help prepare.

In addition to a following a healthy eating plan, other selfcare habits like taking time daily to destress, being more physically active and getting enough quality sleep can all benefit your heart. It’s also important to know what your blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar levels are and what a healthy weight is for you.

Learn more about the DASH eating plan and find recipes at nhlbi.nih.gov/DASH.

Enjoy the Outdoors All Year With a Fire Pit

As temperatures dip, people can extend their enjoyment of the outdoors with fire pits that produce heat as well as ambiance.

“Depending on the size of the fire pit, heat can radiate from a radius of six to 16 feet, providing a nice, cozy feeling while sitting outside in cooler weather,” says Sam Schmucker, co-owner of The BBQ Store and More, 17007 Doty Road, New Haven.

Sales of fire pits have greatly increased as people want to expand their home entertaining to include the outdoors, he says.

The local family-owned business opened four years ago, having merged with S & W Swing Sets that was in business for 30 years. The store has all things to do with BBQ, including a wide assortment of grills, griddles, smokers, and more. To help customers make the most

of cooking outdoors, they also sell patio furniture, playsets, gazebos and pavilions. The 4,500-square-foot showroom also has outside displays.

BBQ Store and More carries “Breeo” and “Warming Trends” brand fire pits, both quality products made in America with good warranties, Schmucker says.

“What sets us apart is we know our product and have the best customer service to help people know how to accomplish the look and result they want to achieve,” he says.

Breeo invented the first smokeless fire pit in 2011, which can be used to grill food. The fire pits are about 90 percent smokeless after burning for 12-15 minutes. Breeo fire pits work through a double-wall secondary combustion design. When the fire is burning, the walls heat up and the hot air rises through the gap between the two walls. The air exits

the wall cavity through a series of holes around the rim. The pressurized heated oxygen mixes with the smoke and causes it to reburn. Available in three sizes and 15 styles, Breeo fire pits can stand alone or be surrounded by a brick or stone outer wall to give a different look and blend with landscaping. The Warming Trends fire pits have a patent-pending technology behind the brass crossfire burner that uses an air-to-gas ration to produce a taller, brighter, and fuller flame, resembling a natural wood burning fire.
