Ihave two mantras I’ll probably re peat frequently in this column. First is “Buy local,” because supporting local businesses helps our community to flourish. The other is “Support the arts,” because art is fundamental to our humanity. (And hon estly, I think some of our “big” local busi nesses could do more to support local art).

On that note, I geeked out a bit when I checked my mailbox earlier this week. My husband and I recently bought a subscription to the Broadway Series at The Paramount Theatre, in Aurora, and our glossy tickets for this season’s four productions had ar rived. I’m so excited to experience some of my favorite musicals up close! (I’m officially at a point in my life where I like to sit close enough to see the actors’ facial expressions). Also, it’s rare that my husband and I get out just the two of us, so this gives us a few date nights to look forward to throughout the year. You might think Aurora is a bit far, but there are plenty of more-local opportunities to experience excellent art. This is the time of year when subscriptions are typically avail able, and sometimes even on sale. For exam ple, you can subscribe to the Fall 2022 season of the Rockford Symphony Orchestra, which includes five live performances plus other perks. There’s also the 2022-2023 Broadway in Rockford season happening at the Coro nado Performing Arts Center. Shows include “Hairspray,” “A Magical Cirque Christmas” and “The Book of Mormon.” If you’d like to be more involved in the arts yourself, au ditions for Rockford Dance Company’s “The Nutcracker” are happening on Sept. 10, and the whole community is welcome. In addition to the performing arts, the vi sual arts could use your support as well. Con sider visiting the Rockford Art Museum or 317 Art Collective. Exhibitions are constantly coming and going. When we show up for local artists, it makes our community a more compelling place to live. So get out and support the arts!

Regular skin exams also are recom mended for all age groups. Remember that dark spots, leathery skin and wrinkles all can be byproducts of sun exposure.

Men: Skin Cancer Doesn’t Play Fair

“This is an often forgotten about en tity under the umbrella of men’s health,” says Dr. Roger Kapoor, a dermatologist at Beloit Health System. “It can be inappro priately viewed as only a female issue.” But the numbers don’t lie. By age 65, men are twice as likely as females in the same age group to develop melanoma, the most serious type of skin cancer, re ports the American Academy of Derma tology. By age 80, men are three times as likely as women their age to develop melanoma.Asphysicians have learned more about the science of skin cancer and melanoma, they have found that men are physiologically at a disadvantage com pared to “Basedwomen.ongender alone, men literal ly have a higher risk of skin cancer partly because they have thicker skin with less fat and more collagen,” Kapoor says.

“What research has shown is that this makes skin more susceptible to sun dam age from the same amount of UV light when compared to women. So, a man and woman standing under the same sun will have a greater negative impact on men.”

Additionally, estrogen assists the immune response to fight against mela noma, Kapoor adds. His best advice to minimizing the risk of skin cancer is simple: stay out of the sun or limit your exposure between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., when UV intensity is at its peak; wear a wide-brimmed hat to provide a physical block to UV rays; and use a sunscreen that’s at least 30 SPF while getting continuous sun exposure.

“If you find a melanoma early, it can be highly treatable, and even curable,” Kapoor says. “Melanoma can be a pre ventable cause of death, but time is of the essence.” ❚

Can’t we all just get along? We can if we decide to. ❚ – Janine Pumilia

14 Smart Living Live August 2022 • No. II To advertise call 815-316-2300 Inspiration & Worship No Room for Hate Can’t we all just get along?

The Book of Acts reveals how difficult it was for the early church to wrap its head around this concept of equality. In the Old Testament, God favored certain people. It wasn’t the ideal way to operate, however. God wanted to undo the damage done by Adam’s disobedience (Romans 5:19) and make peace with all who choose to believe. That universal reconciliation was made possible through Christ. (2 Cor. 5:18)

The New Testament teaches that favor itism on our part is a sin. We’re to love all people and treat them well. (James 2:1-3, 9)

If we choose to view one another as God does, the answer is “yes.” There’s no hatred based on race, gender, age, health, wealth, etc., when we view one another through God’s eyes. Each of us is precious.

Scripture also teaches that our views should never be shaped by cultural norms that are at odds with Christ’s. Kings, presi dents, preachers and other opinion leaders come and go and are fallible. Only Christ’s kingdom endures forever. In it, there’s no place for hatred. (Eph.4:31). We’re to imitate Christ. (Eph. 5:1 & 2). Each of us is made in God’s image, which is spirit. Spirit has no gender or race. “There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free man, there is nei ther male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus.” (Galatians 3:28). God cares about whether we accept the Gospel and live it (Romans 10: 9 & 10), not about our superficial differences. He sees our hearts. (I Sam. 16:7). Being reconciled to God through Christ binds us together as one family, but we must guard that precious unity. Jude warns of those who “slip in” and divide us for personal gain, in verses 17-19: “These people are grumblers and faultfinders; they follow their own evil desires; they boast about themselves and flatter others for their own advantage … These are the people who divide you, who follow mere natural instincts and do not have the Spirit.”

By Randy Ruef Back in 1990, a group of residents wanted to restore the historic Beckman Mill, located about 5 miles west of Beloit. Their mission was daunting. The 1868 mill had fallen into such disrepair that people from the state historical so ciety said they’d be better off tearing it down and starting from scratch. But this determined group, known as the Friends of Beckman Mill, chose to renovate rather than rebuild. Their efforts not only brought the mill back to life by 1998, but they have since expanded upon it, adding a dam, a fish ladder, a barn, a museum and a visitor’s center. Today, the mill is a popular tourist stop and a histori cal gem that transports people back to a simplerNonetime.of this would have been possi ble without the Friends of Beckman Mill, a group of volunteers that’s been the driv ing force behind the mill’s restoration and reuse going on three decades.

“We were fortunate enough to have a couple of engineers and some foresight to renovate it,” says Sheri Disrud, one of the original Friends of Beckman Mill. “We started out with small fundraisers and just rebuilt on a pay-as-you-go basis. We had a house mover come and put it up on steel beams as we tore out the foundation and put in a concrete foundation which was then faced with the original limestone. After that was done, people would start coming by and saw that this might re ally be possible. So, that’s how we got things going early.”For Disrud, who has served as treasurer, president and events chair for the Friends, the volunteer efforts are perhaps her proudest part of telling the Beckman story. The mill is located along a widened portion of Raccoon Creek and offers tours from 1-4 p.m. every Saturday and Sunday between May and October. The cost is just a free-will donation. Tours are available on other days, but those are by reservation and must include at least 15 people at $5 per person.

Many adults are too young to re member the Terry Schiavo case that began in 1990, after Schiavo, age 26, suffered massive brain damage that left her in a persistent vegetative state. Her husband sought to remove her feeding tube, believing it’s what she would have wanted, but her parents fought him in court for 15 years. By the time her tube was removed, in 2005, the case had seen 14 appeals in Florida courts, five suits in federal dis trict court and extensive involvement by the Florida legislature, Gov.
