We need names
Is there an unsung hero in your group? Now is the time to recognise their achievements by nominating them for the Mary Stott Award, writes NWR trustee Jennifer Johnson
It’s that time of year again! As we look forward to September’s national conference in Newcastle we are again asking you, the members, for your nominations for the prestigious Mary Stott Award.

The award was set up in 2003 to honour the memory of Guardian Women’s Page editor Mary Stott, who published that article way back in 1960 showing young women that they need not devote themselves entirely to domestic concerns—there was a world outside where there were friendly, lively minded women who wanted to meet, discuss and support each other, and have fun!
Annually the trustees present the award to an NWR member who has: ■ made an exceptional contribution to
NWR, the community and/or the wider world; ■ made great strides in her own personal development; ■ shown a great commitment to a project.
The winner will be presented with a quaich, which is a Scottish cup of friendship. NWR will have it inscribed with her name, and she will hold it for the year. She will also be presented with a book token in recognition of Mary’s profession as a journalist, although in
2009 winner Rita Fowler from Deepings NWR was inspired to establish a school in Kenya, after seeing the poverty endured in slum areas of Mombasa. Fiona Catterson of Kilbarchan NWR received the quaich in 2021 for her work bringing activities to the elderly in her community, and for her success in gaining Eco Church status for her local place of worship this day and age it is more likely to be an Amazon voucher—we are moving with the times! In addition she will receive a free place at the Newcastle conference along with travel expenses, since we would really like her to be able to join us.
We do however need your nominations! Think about the members of your group or people you know in the wider NWR community. Are there unsung heroes out there who deserve this recognition? Without nominations there can be no award!
The first step is for you to decide on an appropriate person and obtain her agreement to being put forward. The next step is to tell us why she is worthy of the award, using the criteria above as a guide. Your submission should consist of around 500 words and focus on what your
