Reserve, then relax: Columnist ANDREW HOGE recommends a little down time this summer at one of these luxury spa retreats located in the San Juan Islands.

Conveniently positioned on either San Juan or Orcas Island, and offering such amenities as therapeutic pools, outdoor soaking tubs, saunas and more, these luxury wellness and spa destinations are perfect for indulging in a little R&R the next time you come ashore from your summer boating adventures. (Pro-tip: Make reservations and confirm health precautions ahead of time to make the most of your trip as pandemic guidelines continue to evolve.)

Afterglow Spa at Roche Harbor, San Juan Island

Tucked inside Roche Harbor Village, you will find the well-appointed Afterglow Spa where weary sailors can indulge in award-winning treatments, including relaxing massages and restorative facials. Before or after your treatment, spend a few quiet moments in the fireside relaxation lounge where you can enjoy a cup of tea or refreshing spa water. And while the signature eucalyptus steam room and spacious showers won’t reopen until Phase 4 of re-opening (as of press time, this was set for June 30, so fingers crossed!), you can still shop through a curated offering of hair, body, and makeup products and find something you desire. Earthbox Inn & Resort, San Juan Island

In the mood for a retro chic spot to relax? The Spa at the Earthbox Inn is just a four-minute jaunt from Friday Harbor and features a treatment menu that includes deep-cleansing facials, eyelash extensions, and sugaring for hair removal. Not to be missed: The soothing Beach Stone massage that utilizes hot stones gathered on island beaches. As an added bonus, Earthbox is also the only resort on the island with an indoor heated pool. The Spa at Rosario, Orcas Island

For an all-day wellness experience, dock at Rosario Marina and immerse yourself in the historic grandeur of The Spa at Rosario. Integrated into the garden level of the historic Moran Mansion, the spa boasts amenities such as a sauna, mirrored exercise and weight room, a whirlpool, and an indoor therapeutic quiet pool. Overnight marina guests can enjoy all the spa facilities for only $12 a day. Additional spa treatments include the Island Time Massage and Signature Facial that features premiere products from Eminence Skin Care. Should you decide to spend the night, be sure to also take advantage of the seasonal outdoor pool that boasts a water view like none other. (Orcas Island; 1400 Rosario Road; rosarioresort.com)

Doe Bay Resort & Retreat Spa, Orcas Island

With a little planning, the iconic outdoor hot tubs at the Doe Bay Resort & Retreat can be all yours. Now available to reserve in specific time slots for resort guests, you and your pod can relax together and enjoy the amazing water views all in private. Should you desire some further indulgence, you can also schedule a visit to the Serenity Garden and have the on-site masseur work out any lingering kinks. (Orcas Island; 107 Doe Bay Rd.; doebay.com)
