GOVERNOR'S PROJECT
ROOM TO READ This year, the governor's project chosen is Room To Read! Website: roomtoread.org!
What is Room To Read?? Room to Read is an organization dedicated to creating a world free from illiteracy and gender inequality. They help children in historically low-income communities develop literacy skills and a habit of reading, and support girls as they build skills to succeed in school and negotiate key life decisions. Room To Read collaborates with governments and other partner organizations to deliver positive outcomes for children at scale. Please consider putting some money from fundraisers to donate to this cause!
District Endorsed Projects Kamp Kiwanis Kamp Kiwanis is a summer camp program located in Central New York (in the heart of Upstate New York), dedicated to helping children and adults with special needs. Disadvantaged or underprivileged children from ages 8-14 get a chance to explore environmental and cultural activities. The overnight summer camp program helps kampers get an opportunity to build self-esteem, make friendships, gain leadership skills, and form cooperative peer relationships, all while participating in outdoor group activities in a fun camp setting.
Kiwanis Pediatric Lyme Disease Foundation The Kiwanis Pediatric Lyme Disease Foundation is an organization that helps those who suffer from Lyme Disease, focusing on children who are impacted. Lyme Disease is caused by bacteria that is usually transmitted by the deer tick. Medical treatment for children is very expensive, and this support organization is funded through donations from Kiwanis Clubs and individuals. They are also connected with the Pediatric Lyme Disease Fund, so they can take in as much donations to help children with the disease. The foundation currently has 27 active grants for children with Lyme Disease! And as of May 2014, the foundation had paid $269,000 for pediatric treatment!
District Endorsed Projects Kiwanis Pediatric Trauma Center The Kiwanis Pediatric Trauma Center is a clinic located in Long Island, New York that is dedicated to serving unique care for children in extreme situations (e.g. trauma injuries). Trauma takes the lives of 25,000 children each year and leaves another 120,000 children permanently disabled. And an estimated 25% of these deaths and disabilities could be prevented with proper and prompt care. Kiwanis helps to provide treatment as to meet the needs of families with children suffering from trauma (e.g., transportation). It also serves a number of other functions, such as outreach to parents and educational programs. It is a Kiwanis-Hospital association that was created in order to provide the funds and staff necessary to create a trauma center with extensive medical assistance and safety.
Kiwanis needs Key Club’s help to reduce the number of lives cut short! Please consider supporting this charity also!!

Internal Service Spotlight Fayetteville-Manlius High School Key Club: Blanket Making Service Project!03/09/2023 + 03/23/2023 Key Club Members made blankets and donated them to a local hospital-Golisano Children's Hospital, to help kids who are in the hosipital recieving care. "As Fayetteville Manlius Key Club members, we created blankets for kids at Golisano’s Children’s Hospital. We used templates for knot-tying blankets. We had to cut strips all along the edges of two blankets, and then we tied each side together to make a double sided blanket. Many people came so we were able to get all the blankets complete in two meetings. This was one of my favorite events because I love that we are helping kids in the hospital. Who knows what they are going through, so it feels special to be helping them out. We also had blankets with different colors and patterns, to accommodate for girls or boys. I bet the kids were so happy when they received them. My friend and I worked on one blanket together. I cut strips, and she tied them, which made the process much quicker. Many groups of friends were working together, which made this a fun collaborative process."

Internal Service Spotlight Liverpool High School Key Club: Community Cleanup- 04/17/2023 Liverpool High School Key Club hosted its annual spring Community Cleanup Project! In hot weather, members helped serve their community by reducing waste. "Each year, the Liverpool High School Key Club participates in an event we call Community Cleanup at Onondaga Parkway. We always meet at the Westshore Trail, and branch out to different areas of the park on that end. This year, we helped clean up the park for an hour on Sunday, April 16. It was a hot day, so we did end earlier than expected. We typically clean up the grounds for two hours. However, we filled several garbage bags. Volunteers included (in order of picture left to right) Leyna Nguyen, Catherine Rouselle, Sanid Music, Iito Maslyn, Emma Fenwick, and Amelia Dubiel. Being a part of Key Club does not just involve caring for the people in our community but for the environment in which we live. The impact may be small, but it makes a huge difference in the grand scheme of things. Cleanliness allows users of the trail and park to appreciate what is being offered and protects our animals, plant life, and water systems. We want to make an impact on our world, and through service, we can do great things."

External Service Spotlight DIVISION 23! Victor High School Key Club: Lucky To Be Loved Dance04/14/2023
Division 23 LTG: Kaitlin Buckley "Victor High School held a Lucky to be Loved Dance at their Intermediate School. Key Clubbers set up room decorations, the food stands, the drink stands, a craft station and the photo backdrop. Volunteers also deconstructed everything down after the dance, cleaning up all the stations! We had quite a bit of helping hands, and everyone was super nice about cleaning up the various different stations we had set up. Attendees had a lot of fun during the event, and the dance looked nice. There were multiple stands of each, and the craft station had many quick and fun crafts that anyone could make. The photo backdrop was set up for the dance to set the scene, and overall, the event was quite successful. I’d say the dance was a success, in which Key Clubbers were able to help yet still were able to get in on the fun and the music. I loved seeing everyone’s smiles as they enjoyed the dance!"

SPRING DISTRICT BOARD MEETING RECAP
On April 28th- April 30th, the District Board had a Spring Board Meeting in Long Island, at Long Island University Post. We appointed a UNICEF champion, created new district goals for service hours and fundraising , voted on district projects, learned about the Governor's Project and more ways that we as Key Clubbers can serve our clubs and community as lieutenant governors. I had never been to Long Island but it was super fun and turned out to be a phenomenal weekend I will never forget. I also discovered hmy new love for table tennis at the board meeting!

Solvay wlll be celebrating 75 years of service this year, and there might be an event/social event that Key Clubbers could attend! I'm looking into it with our KCR, Mr. Eppolito.
In the summer or late June/July, my KCR, Mr. Eppolito and I, have looked into a community service project over the summer-and one we have in mind is helping plant trees for an Onondaga organization dedicated to environmentalism.
