Dear Readers, We continue to roll along with NY Hockey OnLine Magazine. We’ve had a couple of great months as far as views on-line but continue to ask you to make sure you forward this magazine to your players. We do not have access to those email addresses, unless you wish to provide them. We will be updating our database over the summer and ask that you forward your Board and Coaches email addresses for the next season as soon as possible. We’ve received several returned emails due to changes and/or people leaving the organization. Keep as much news coming over the summer as possible. We are going with 12 issues and need whatever you have. body”. I have the honor of coaching a sled hockey team in Syracuse, NY. We recently participated in a tournament in Canton, NY that was put together by an old friend of mine, Mark McKenna. Mark is doing some great things with the Wounded Warriors Program at Ft. Drum. JoAnne Castagna, Ed.D. wrote a nice article about the Canton event that I thought I would share. Enjoy the article! Army Corps civilian builds up Wounded Warriors with sled hockey program Last year, Mark McKenna, a project engineer with the Fort Drum Field Office of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New York District was working out at the gym at Fort Drum in Watertown, N.Y. “I was working out in the gym and a Soldier in a wheelchair came in and then turned around and left the gym. I asked the manager what do they do for the disabled, because they cannot reach the pull up bar nor the dumbbells. She told me that they had nothing organized for them.” McKenna felt that more could be

Army Corps civilian builds up Wounded Warriors with sled hockey program done for these Wounded Warriors. He began to research what he could do. Since he is a major hockey fan and has been a volunteer hockey coach for over 30 years, he came up with the idea of forming a sled hockey team at Fort Drum for these disabled Soldiers. He had learned through his research that sled hockey is an adaptive sport for the disabled to play ice hockey. He and a team of volunteers quickly went to work to form a team, find equipment and train them up. R e cently, the “Mountain Sled Wa r r i o r s (Wounded Warrior Unit - WTU)” held their first sled hockey tournament with great success. The donation-only fundraiser benefits Fort Drum’s Warrior in Transition Unit at Fort Drum, sled teams from Albany, Syracuse, Ottawa and the U.S. Army’s Wounded Warrior Project.
“These tournaments are a great way to help the Soldiers get back in touch with their community and for the community to thank them for their service for our country,” said McKenna. “During the tournament the Wounded Warriors forgot about their disability and learned a new sport or found out that they can still play hockey in a different way. Also they had fun doing some team building. They all had smiles on their faces; it was like they were kids again.” McKenna is supported by the Society of American Military Engineers (SAME) Fort Drum Chapter, Canton Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 1231, the Knights of Columbus, as well as many businesses, universities and pro hockey stars that donated their money and equipment, such as sleds and specially designed hockey bags and jerseys. The tournament took place at the SUNY Canton’s Roos House rink. The WTU team was composed of 24 male and female Soldiers that played a round-robin tournament with other Wounded Warrior teams from Albany, N.Y. (“Capitol District Warriors”),

Builds Confidence Wautash said, “It gives individuals the ability to be part of a full contact sport that builds their self confidence and provides them a sense of accomplishment in the game. It’s truly a no loser sport.”

The games began with the national anthems for Canada and the U.S. and color guard marches from the VFW-Post 1231 and Clarkson University’s Reserve Officer Training Corps. The games ended with a party and special dinner, raffle, silent auction and the awarding of medals and trophies. The Wounded Warriors benefit from the tournament in multiple ways: Strengthens Soldier bond WTU team player Staff Sergeant, Matthew Butler said, “The best part of playing for me was seeing all the Soldiers having fun together and working as a team.” Butler was injured while on an air assault mission in Iraq of 2007. “The camaraderie between hockey fans and players is unlike any other sport. Playing with Wounded Warriors takes this one step further, we are brothers in arms and brothers on the ice,” said Sergeant, Elijah Haslage, a WTU goalie. Strengthens body Haslage said, “I like this event because it gives those who love hockey but can’t play anymore the chance to get back on the ice, no matter the disability.” “Sled hockey also brings a whole new challenge to the game of hockey for someone like me that has played hockey,” said Butler. “Even though the rules and fundamentals are the same, being in a sled gives that feeling of learning and being challenged as though you have never played hockey before. In other words, I found myself learning a whole new skill set but still playing the game I love, hockey!” WTU team player Staff Sergeant, Wautash Grillett said,
Provides a distraction “I think it is a good distraction for a lot of Warriors that have a lot on their plates; they have the looming transition out of the Army, painful conditions, and numerous doctors’ appointments. It is good to forget for the few hours you are on the ice,” said Haslage. Butler said, “Soldiers who at one time were training to kick in doors and then deployed and had to face the reality behind those doors to protect and serve a country they love, are now returning with limitations. Anything that makes them forget about those limitations for a few moments and builds cohesion as a team once again with a common goal or interest (and love every minute of it) is what these Soldiers need!” Butler continued, “It truly is a blessing to know that the “North Country” of upstate, New York not only cares about our Soldiers, as we have always known, but really goes out of their way to make a difference in these Soldiers lives at such a crucial time for many.” McKenna said, “The event would not have been possible without the overwhelming support and generous donations from the entire community. Donations from this recent tournament will help us purchase new equipment including 30 sleds.” McKenna added, “These tournaments have shown me that Wounded Warriors can do anything they put their minds to. They just need an opportunity. These guys and gals put their lives on the line for us. The Army Corps builds buildings and facilities for them. their way to the title. “I’ve got a tremendous amount of confidence in the group defensively as well as offensively and with Stu as one of our primary penalty killers, I obviously trust him. “They have speed, they have tenacity, they have a very high hockey IQ and have really meshed well for us down the stretch as a line.” Wilson played high school at Pittsford before joining the Rochester Junior B Americans in the Empire League and then Cedar Rapids in the United States Hockey League. He has scored nine goals and added eight assists over the first 37 games of his collegiate career while centering the team’s third line and a member of the top penalty killing unit. “The biggest transition for me was from Junior B to juniors in the USHL and now coming here (the Frozen Four) after seeing my dad’s team do it a few years ago,” Wilson said. “It’s kind of surreal actually.” “I worked really hard and I wanted the kinds of opportunities I’m getting, but with older guys around they can get a leg up on you and there can be a bit of hierarchy. But the coaches have put me in situations which I am grateful for and I’m just trying to make the best of them.
As for Day, he played his freshman year with St. Francis, spent two years with Iroquois, played in the Buffalo Regals system and one year in Rochester in bantam minor before leaving home to play for Waterloo in the United States Hockey League. In 55 games over his two year collegiate career, the 5’9” has scored five goals and six assists. “I’ve been fortunate to get a couple breaks and I can’t say enough about St. Francis and their program. Two years in the USHL away from home; I got bigger and stronger and Yale has been a dream come true. “Stu and I try to use our speed and that’s the best part of my game. O’Gara arrived at Yale out of Milton Academy and played in all 37 games including the final two in the top defensive pairing with Colorado Avalanche draft pick Gus Young. O’Gara racked up seven assists this season. Now the names Day, Wilson and O’Gara can be added to Kennedy, Patch Alber, Ratchuk, Mueller, Brian Gionta, Brooks and Andrew Orpik, Nick Petrecki, Kevin Shattenkirk and Matt Gilroy among other New Yorkers over the past decade as NCAA hockey national champions.B

I got my letter in June of my senior year explaining that I had been accepted into West Point through this category. “Only later, once I got to West Point, that I found out that it was their hockey coach, Jack Riley, not Blaik, who had selected me out of the qualified alternate pool. Which I passed. “What I later found out is that the athletic coaches at West Point have a claim on a school. We had gone to high school together at Cranbrook. “Larry had stayed in contact with me and explained what a great time he was having at West Point. He had quite an influence on me be-
Hockey Leads to Heisman!

ete Dawkins is one of the most accomplished cadets to ever come out of West Point. He was a Heisman Trophy winner and captain of Army’s 1958 unbeaten football team. Dawkins is the first and only cadet to become Cadet Brigade Commander, class president, captain of the football team and a ‘star man,’ finishing in the top five percent of his class. Upon graduation from West Point he studied for three years at Oxford as a Rhodes Scholar and later received his doctorate from Princeton. He continued his Army career and was promoted to Brigadier General and served in the Pentagon as the Army’s Deputy Director of Strategy, Plans and Policy before retiring in 1983 after 24 years of dedicated service. But as hard as this may to believe, it was actually the sport of hockey that got him in the door of West Point. “I loved hockey,” recalled Dawkins. “You learned to love hockey if you grew up in Michigan. “A friend of mine, Larry Asbury, had gone to the Academy a year before I graduated from high

“It was the sport I really enjoyed playing the most,” continued Dawkins, now 75. “If you could hit it with a stick, throw it or chase it I played it. “Jack Riley was a remarkable person (Riley coached the gold medal winning 1960 U.S. men’s hockey team). He was one of the greatest motivators I’ve ever been with as far as a coach goes. “We played on Smith Rink at West Point. I think it was the largest ice rink in North America at the time. “I think Army won every third period we played at home because the surface was so big. The opposition was so exhausted by the time they got to the third period. “We practiced on it every day so we were used to it.” Dawkins only had one problem to deal with as a hockey player. “The football season and hockey season overlapped,” explained Dawkins. “The hockey team had already played three or four games before we would get to the Army-Navy football game. “So the Army-Navy game would be on a Saturday. I would play the game, take off Sunday and be at hockey practice on Monday. “I didn’t have a lot of transition time from one sport to another. It was just something I had to put up with.” Interestingly one of Dawkins most memorable hockey experiences occurred following graduation from West Point.
“A friend invited me to practice with the Detroit Red Wings,” explained Dawkins. “I thought I had died and gone to heaven. “I jumped at the chance. It was a couple of weeks before the Red Wings opened their season. “So they allowed me to warm up with the team and then they had a scrimmage. I was put on a line with Gordie Howe. “I played against a team that had Red Kelly on defense and Terry Sawchuk in goal. So we began playing and before you knew it I had scored a goal. “Things got a little rougher after that because these guys are competitors. But I ended up scoring another goal. That’s when things really got rough. “I was simply trying to keep from getting hurt out there. And wouldn’t you know it, I scored again. “After that third goal, Sawchuk broke his stick over the crossbar and went in the locker room and wouldn’t come back out. “My brief NHL career and hockey career was over. “It was time for me to move on.” And move on he did.B

Buffalo Takes Two in Bowman Cup
T
he Buffalo Seniors and Buffalo Junior/Prep took home the Bowman Cup and Rochester Juniors took home a championship following the 2013 Bowman
Cup. Each year the top ice hockey players from high schools, prep schools and the junior teams in Buffalo and Rochester are chosen to play in a showcase tournament that draws college and junior hockey scouts. The Buffalo Seniors took the Rochester Seniors 9-0 for the second time in two years. Buffalo’s Manny Mannis, Lancaster, had a hat trick in the game. Eric Paradowski, St. Joe’s scored the first goal, shorthanded. Other players dumping the puck in the net were Bob Piotrowicz with two goals, Frontier High High School; Ausitn Bianchi, Williamsville East; Dimitrios Gogos, St. Joes and Tyler McTigue, St. Francis. Getting assists were Randy Dinatale, Sweethome, 3; Bianchi had two assists, McTigue had two assists and Lockport High School’s Rick Eberhardt had two assists. Brian Ruff, son of former Buffalo Sabres Head Coach Lindy Ruff, also had two assists and Ty Gallagher, Grand Island, and Tom Ryan, Kenmore West, each had a single
assist. In goal for the Buffalo team were Nick George, St. Joe’s; Connor Naughton, Canisius High and Chris Reinhardt, Cheektowaga. In the first game of the day, the Buffalo Juniors vs the Rochester Juniors, it was Rochester winning 4-1. Rochester’s Brandon Henshaw, Brockport, put the puck past Buffalo Goaltender Adam Dentico, Williamsville East. The initial shot was saved by Dentico but Henshaw took his own rebound and scored just as he fell to the ground in front of the net. Anthony DePetres, Aquinas High School, and Connor Hoyng, Churchville-Chili, got the assists. Rochester scored twice in the second period with Andrew Scuncio, Pittsford, scoring on a rebound and then DePetres scored his first goal of the evening. Buffalo’s only goal was scored by Joe Piegay, Bishop Timon, with a little over one minute left in the game. DePetres then dumped in his second of the game to get the win. Ryan Romeo, Fairport, got the assist. At the Junior/Prep School game it was Buffalo over Rochester 3-2 to win the Rick Martin Memorial Cup. The teams scored four goals in the final six minutes of the game.

With under six minutes left in the game, Rochester’s Joe Drabin, Buffalo Jr. Sabres 18U, tied the score at 1-1. With two minute left, Buffalo’s Eric Benshadle, Buffalo Jr.Sabres 16U team, scored putting Buffalo in the lead. Nichol’s Nick Smith added an empty net goal which proved to be the game-winner. Rochester answered back with just 8.5 seconds left when Bryan Carville, Maksyum scored, but no time was left for them to advance further. Buffalo took the Rick Martin Memorial Cup home. Buffalo Goaltenders Blaine Brock, Buffalo Jr. Sabres 18U, Bobby Bloomfield, Buffalo Jr. Sabres and Anthony Tirabassi, Nichols, were in net. Buffalo’s Randy DiNatale of Sweethome High School and Rochester’s Justin Alves, Churchville-Chili, received scholarships from the Buffalo Sabres Alumni Association. The scholarships were presented by Alumni President Rob Ray. Dropping the puck for the tournament named in his honor, was former Buffalo Sabres Head Coach and winningest coach in the NHL, Scotty Bowman.B

Binghamton Adds Ceci to Roster
O
ttawa’s Cody Ceci has been reassigned to Binghamton from the Owen Sound Attack. The 6-3, 215-pound defenseman was Ottawa’s first-round pick (15th overall) in the 2012 National Hockey League Entry Draft. The Orleans, Ont. native recently finished his fourth full season in the OHL when his Owen Sound Attack were defeated four games to two by the Plymouth Whalers in a Western Conference Seminfinal playoff series that ended April 14 Ceci, 19, appeared in 69 total OHL games this season split between the Ottawa 67’s and Sound scoring a career-high 19 goals, 45 assists and 64 points. In 265 career games, he has recorded 49 goals, 121 assists and 170 points. He has also earned three goals and 27 assists in 46 playoff games. Central Section News and Notes Six Blazers Named To NYSAHA Player Development Camps
T
he Syracuse Blazers are proud to announce that six players have been named to NYSAHA Player Development teams this coming spring/summer: For the ‘98 team - Tommy Bianchi, Stanley Kubis and Nick Skidmore. For the ‘99 team - Tanner Coleman, Matt Frye and Jeffrey Gentile. Congratulations to these players and all the Blazers who attended the March 23 tryout and represented SYHA well. The selection of SYHA players is a testament to their hard work and the commitment from our organization to player development.

at Karins was named the recipient of the 2013 Kurt Kemp Friend of Youth Hockey. Karins has served as the Valley Registrar for the past four seasons. In addition, Pat has helped as the Kitchen Coordinator and goes above and beyond in her role as Registrar keeping things running smoothly for the Association. Through Pat’s efforts, the teams at Valley Hockey are able to play and compete, representing Valley across NYS.
Valley Hockey elected the following to positions for next season: Terry Walter, vice president; Heather DiBlasi, treasurer; Dan McDonald, director of coaches; Any Boland, Rlodney Kirkby, Ronna Louise, members-at-large and Scott Jesmore, scheduler. Their terms run through 2015.
Future Bright for First Arena and Elmira Jackals Elmira--New owners of the First Arena, Tom Freeman and Nathan Cook held a press conference to share their vision for the future. Local business owners, area representatives and regional officials were present during this press conference to share in the good news. Freeman and Cook will operate the facility, the team, and restaurant/catering as part of their ownership. The two have plans to revamp the events held at the facility, including new entertainment and performances. His six goals were tops among blueliners, including three power-play goals. John Esposito claimed the Crimson Cup, given to the player who was the standout performer in the season series against Harvard. The Big Red dropped the first game of the season against Harvard, 4-1, on Nov. 16 at Lynah Rink, but then rallied for a 2-2 tie in the rematch on Feb. 16 at Bright Center in Cambridge, Mass. Vince Mihalek was presented the Cornell Hockey Association Award, which is given annually to the player whose contributions to the team don’t show up in the box score, but rather are in the form of energy, heart and hustle. Iles was tabbed for the Bill Doran Sportsmanship Award after making 898 saves this season, tied for second most in a single season in program history. He started all 34 games, finishing all of those games — with the exception of the final 31 seconds of the Senior Night game, when he yielded the crease to make room for senior Omar Kanji’s collegiate debut. The Greg Ratushny Award for the most promising rookie went to Christian Hilbrich. After appearing intermittently for the first two-thirds of the season, Hilbrich scored five points while playing the final 10 games of the season.
HOBART Alum and former Statesmen Ryan Adler ‘09 served as the emcee for the Hockey Humanitarian Award presentation at the 2013 Frozen Four in Pittsburgh. Adler, a two-time finalist for the award during his Hobart hockey career, is now a member of the Humanitarian Award Foundation board of trustees. After partaking in voting and interviews with the 2013 candidates, Adler was asked to emcee the presentation at the Frozen Four this year. The award is given annually to a hockey player, male or female in Division I-III, to ac-

UTICA The men’s hockey team led the nation in home attendance for the seventh consecutive season this past year. In 17 home dates, 63,824 fans came through the turnstiles at the Utica Memorial Auditorium. Utica’s average home attendance of 3,754 fans per home game set a new single season record for home attendance in Division III, as the Pioneers shattered their own previous record of 3,253 set last season. UC’s average attendance ranked 19th nationally at all levels of NCAA hockey (DI-DIII). The Pioneers sold out 11-of-17 home games this past season, including the their NCAA Tournament quarterfinal victory against Bowdoin on March 9th. Rounding out the top five most attended programs this year were Oswego State (2nd, 2,418), Plattsburgh (3rd, 1,840), Norwich (4th, 1,618) and Bowdoin (5th, 1,345).

While leading the team in short-handed goals, she finished near the top of every other category for the Soaring Eagles, be it goals, assists, power play goals or game-winning goals. In an overly balanced team, Ryan may have been the most balanced player of all, excelling in all facets of the game.

Y was well-represented at the USA Nationals for Girls and Youth Hockey. With 14 teams participating, one came home with a first place finish-Chazy 19U Tier II. At the 19U Tier I level the Buffalo Bisons lost in the quarterfinals to Shattuck St. Mary’s, Madison Welch made 23 saves and the Bisons took third place. The 19U Tier II Chazy Ladies came home with a championship banner and gold medals. After a loss to Keweenaw in game one, they went on to defeat the Storm 3-2 in the finals. Shattuck went on to win the Championship. The Potsdam Ice Storm played in the 16U Tier II Division and took second place after beating Arizona 6-2 in the quarterfinals. Goals were supplied by Kirsten Barkely (2), Kalie Grant, Lydia Cosgrove and Ally Miller (2). Moving into the semifinals they beat the East Cost Wizards 3-2. Grant and Miller scoring along with Natalie Giglio. Maddie Dielababough made 26 saves. Finally Potsdam would lose 4-1 to the Vermont Shamrocks with Grant scoring the single goal. Syracuse represented NY at the 14U Tier I level. They lost their preliminary rounds to Pittsburgh (5-1), New Jersey Colonials (3-2)
and Honeybaked (3-2). The St. Lawrence Thunder brought home a second place victory after two wins (NJ Colonials and Nassau Panthers) and one loss (East Coach Wizards) put them into the playoffs rounds. The beat Cape Cod 4-3 before losing 2-1 in the semi-final round to the Ct. Ice Cats. In the Women’s Division the Rochester Edge took the Senior C Championship with an unbeaten tournament record. They beat Rampage, Twin City Selects and Team ICES heading into the playoff rounds. In Round 1 it was the Blue Jackets taking them 3-0. The team also announced that Brian Schultz would serve as captain for the 2013-14 season with Mac Lalor and Josh Richards serving as alternate captains. Zach McKelvie and Owen Meyer were among the 18 players selected when the Atlantic Hockey Association announced its 10th Anniversary Teams.
R.P.I. Senior defenseman Nick Bailen (Fredonia) was named First Team East All-American by the American Hockey Coaches Association. It is the second consecutive honor for the senior—he was Second Team in 2011. He later signed a professional contract and was a regular in the Rochester Americans AHL lineup earning his first professional point—an assist—in his first contest April 5th versus Lake Erie. Bailen was named the Engineers Most Valuable Player and Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Classmate CJ Lee (Staten Island) received the Ben Mayo Most Inspirational Player, while Marty O’Grady earned the Community Service Award. Sophomores Luke Curadi and Matt Neal and freshman Travis Fulton shared the Most Improved Player award while sophomore defenseman Curtis Leonard won Best Defensive Player and goaltender Jason Kasdorf garnered Freshman of the Year. Head coach Seth Appert had his contract extended and will now run through the 2020-21 season. “I am thrilled to be at RPI, where we continue to build our program the right way,” Appert said. “I am humbled by the support and belief that Dr. Jackson, Dr. Sams and Jim Knowlton, as well as the alumni and fans, have shown. I am proud of our young men and look forward to leading them in pursuit of championships at RPI.” Appert, who recently finished his seventh year in Troy, led the 2012-13 Engineers to a second place fin-

Sophomore defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere became the ninth Union player to earn All-America honors and the fifth in the Division I era, as he was named a 2013 Second Team CCM Hockey All-American by the American Hockey Coaches Association. Gostisbehere is the third Union defenseman to earn All-American honors, joining Jack Rankin (Second Team, 1977) and Mat Bodie (Second Team, 2012). Gostisbehere’s selection marks the third straight season that a Union player has earned All-American recognition. Junior goaltender Troy Grosenick signed an entrylevel NHL contract with the San Jose Sharks in early April. Senior forward Wayne Simpson was named most valuable player at the annual year-end banquet. Simpson became the ninth member of the Union College Century Club this season, leading the team with 36 points (16 goals, 20 assists) in 39 games played, including a team-best seven game-winning goals. Simpson finished his career at Union with 115 points (56 goals, 59 assists), tied for third with Jason Walters ’10, on the school’s career points list in the Division I era. Sophomore defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere was voted by the fans as the Garnet Blades 7th PLAYER Award winner. The honor is co-sponsored by the Garnet Blades and Lee’s Trophies and is given to the student-athlete recognized by the fans who, with extra effort and skill, consistently creates excitement through aggressive play, resulting in a team advantage. The Coaches’ Award was given to each of the three captains—junior defenseman Mat Bodie, senior forward Kyle Bodie and senior defenseman Greg Coburn. Sophomore forward Daniel Ciampini earned the team’s Most Improved Player Award. Ciampini recorded 21 points (11 goals, 10 assists) in 36 games,

The Rookie of the Year Award went to freshman forward Matt Wilkins, who led all Union freshmen in scoring with 16 points (three goals, 13 assists) in 37 games played. Junior forward Cole Ikkala earned the Scott Richardson Unsung Hero Award. Ikkala has another solid season on the fourth line, recording a career high eight points (three goals, five assists) in 36 games played. Union College has extended the contract of men’s ice hockey coach Rick Bennett through the 2019-20 season. “The job that Rick Bennett has done for the Union College men’s ice hockey program has truly been remarkable,” stated Jim McLaughlin, Union College Director of Athletics. “As an assistant and later associate head coach, his recruiting and coaching efforts helped build us into an ECAC Hockey playoff contender, and laid a foundation for greater heights. In just two seasons with Rick, we have a Frozen Four appearance, two Whitelaw Cup Championships, a Cleary Cup Championship, two NCAA appearances, and Academic All-Americans. Under Bennett’s guidance, Union finished the 201213 season with a record of 22-13-5 (10-8-4 ECAC Hockey), clinching its fourth straight 20-win season. Assistant Coach Julie Chu will be resigning from Union College as Assistant Coach in order to focus her attention on training for the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia. Chu won the gold medal for Team USA as they rallied to defeat Team Canada in the 2013 International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) World Championship by a score of 3-2. Prior to the tournament, Chu was announced as the captain of the squad for the IIHF World Championships. Additionally, she is working to compete to particpate in the 2014 Winter Olympics on Sochi, Russia. Team USA finished the tournament with a 4-0-1 record to record their fourth gold medal in the last five championships. Chu registered a goal as part of a 5-0 win over Switzerland to help the red, white & blue reach the semifinal round. Her goal came from Northeastern standout Kendall Coyne as she converted on a crossice pass on a two-on-one at 1:23, and Chu redirected a shot from the point past the Swiss goaltender Florence Schelling at 3:03 in the final period of play. In the gold medal game against Canada, the United States outshot their opponent 30-16 en route to winning the tournament. Canada was able to strike first and take a 1-0 lead into the first intermission. However, Team USA responded with a pair of goals in the second period to take a 2-1 lead. Team Canada leveled the score entering the final period of play. A late third period goal by Patty Kazmaier award winner Amanda Kessel was enough to give Team USA the gold medal.

The former Harvard Crimson standout has represented Team USA in the IIHF Women’s Championship nine times, winning the gold medal in 2005, 2008, 2009, 2011 and 2013 and the silver in 2001, 2004, 2007 and 2012. In her three seasons with the Dutchwomen, Chu has aided the women’s hockey program to an increase in wins in her final two seasons with Union. Additionally, the Dutchwomen have set a new programhigh in ties with four in each of the last two seasons. Chu stated, “I will be leaving Union to focus solely on training for the 2014 Olympic Games. The women’s hockey team, coaching staff, athletic administration and the Union community have been a wonderful environment for me to work in for the past three years. I appreciate my time here and wish the best for Union Athletics in the future.” She leaves the Dutchwomen ice hockey program to compete in the 2014 Winter Olympics. This will be her fourth time trying out for the Olympic team for the United States. In her latest stint with Team USA, Chu and her teammates were able to win the silver medal. She also has a bronze medal from the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin and a silver medal from Salt Lake City. With the Women’s National Team, Chu has played 25 games since the 2010 Olympics, scoring five goals and 10 assists to combine for 15 points. Additionally, she has represented Team USA at the International Ice Hockey Federation World Women’s Championship eight times, winning the gold medal in 2005, 2008, 2009 and 2011 and the silver in 2001, 2004, 2007 and 2012. In her most recent stint in the IIHF Championships, she was selected as team captain, helping Team USA to a silver medal. Head Coach Claudia Asano Barcomb also commented, “Julie has been a tremendous asset to the women’s ice hockey program for the last three years as a recruiter and associating Team USA with Union women’s hockey. She has aided the development of our student-athletes with skills as well as the understanding of the game of ice hockey. Chu has implemented systems as well as giving the student-athletes individualized attention on and off the ice. Julie has fostered a family atmosphere amongst the student-athletes and
staff and has served as an excellent role model for our student-athletes. I am incredibly grateful for her work ethic and dedication to the Union Hockey program and wish her nothing but the best.”
RPI The Rensselaer women’s ice hockey team held a year-end banquet to celebrate the 2012-13 season, where six awards were presented to five different student-athletes. Earning the team’s highest honor, Most Valuable Player was sophomore goaltender Kelly O’Brien. She also earned the Bob Conway ScholarAthlete Award. Other award winners were captains Taylor Horton and Katie Daniels, who shared the Bill Cahill Memorial Coach’s Award; sophomore Mariana Walsh, who earned the Most Improved Player Award; and freshman Alexa Gruschow, who was named the team’s Rookie of the Year. Horton was also presented with the Willie Stanton Award, which is presented to the outstanding citizen of the team. It is awarded to a player who demonstrates leadership, sportsmanship, hard work and a genuine love of the game or a team member who excels themselves in their volunteer efforts. Also recognized were each of the five individual seniors: Horton (St. Thomas, ON / Bluewater Hawks), Daniels (Rockton, IL / Chicago Mission), Andie Le Donne (Toronto, ON / Durham Lightning), Clare Padmore (Toronto, ON / Toronto Jr. Aeros) and Kristen Jakubowski (Colorado Springs, CO / The Northwood School). O’Brien (Sussex, WI / Madison Capitals) played 34 games, including 31 starts. She had a 9-203 record with a 2.48 goals against average and a .905 save percentage. Of the 79 goals she allowed, 26 came while the Engineers were shorthanded. She allowed two-or-fewer goals in 15 games, including a 10-save, 3-0 shutout of Brown in December and an 11-save, 2-0 shutout of Union in late January. nipiac in November. Academically, she is a biomedical engineering major with a 3.74 cumulative grade point average. A forward, Horton was second on the team in goals with 12 and third in points with 20. Three of her goals came on the power play, two were short-handed and two were game-winners. She also had 42 penalty minutes in 36 games. She had four multiple-point games, including three-point games against Vermont (2 goals, 1 assist) and Princeton (3 assists) in consecutive games. Daniels, a defenseman, also played all 36 games. She was second among the team’s blueliners in points, scoring twice, including a power play goal, with eight assists for 10 points. The Most Improved Player Award went to Walsh (Walpole, MA / Phillips Andover), a forward who had a goal and four assists for five points in 32 games. Her first career goal came in a win over Union this season. In 30 games as a freshman, she did not record any points. Gruschow (Mechanicburg, PA / Washington Pride) is a freshman forward who led the Engineers in goals (12) assists (19) and points (31) in 36 games. Five of her goals came on the power play, one was shorthanded and one was a game-winner. The ECAC Hockey Rookie of the Week once, she was a finalist for the league’s Rookie of the Year Award and selected to the All-Rookie Team. Rensselaer, which is coached by John Burke, finished with an 8-12-2 ECAC Hockey record. The Engineers, who were 10-22-4 overall, were the seventh seed in the league playoffs, dropping two games to the second-seeded Golden Knights of Clarkson.
MANHATTANVILLE The Manhattanville women’s hockey team was honored for their proficiency in the classroom after another year of successes on the ice, as 11 Valiants were named to the ECAC Women’s East AllAcademic Teams. All-Academic honors went to 11 of the women. To be eligible for the Women’s East All-Academic Team, a student-athlete must have completed at least one academic year at his or her current institution, have a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.00 on a 4.00 scale, and must have dressed in at least 50 percent (33 percent for goaltenders) of her team’s games this year. The women’s hockey team finished second among 12 ECAC East Conference institutions with 11 honorees named to the All-Academic team, as no other school had more than eight players named to the team. The senior trio of Kelly Keane (Longmeadow, Mass./ New England Falcons (EJHL)), Katie Little (Victoria, British Columbia/Team British Columbia) and Lynsey Schill (Waterloo, Ontario/Kitchener Rangers (PWHL)) all led the team with her third straight AllAcademic honor, followed by classmate Sonia Occhionero (Montreal, Quebec/Kent School (Conn.)) earning a spot for the second straight year and seven more players selected for the first time. Lady Islanders Have Successful Season! (NY Hockey On-Line thanks the Lady Islanders for their newsletter, which provided much of this information, and apologizes for not printing it in the last issue.)

he Lady Islanders 12U team took first place at the Ponytail tournament in March. Many of the players were brand new to the sport of hockey and yet they have picked up the game quickly and skillfully. Season Wrap-up from the President “Like every season, teams had their ups and downs this year. As our season comes to a close we all look back on its many aspects. At times we forget to look at what is most important in youth sports. Often we look at scores and wins to decide the success of the season. The true success can be seen in our daughters. To me, seeing the score is not as important as seeing the friendships and bonds that develop between the girls, as well as their personal development on and off the ice. I have enjoyed observing their improvement in teamwork as the season continues, the smiles on the faces as they greet each other coming to the rink and leaving the locker room. There has been a lot of research done on the value of what participation in a youth sport teaches. I have a link to an article entitled “What Makes a Nightmare Sports Parent – and What Makes a Great One” discussing the topic below. I believe it is not what our children learn about the sport as what the sport teaches our children about life. As the Board and I look ahead in preparation for an even more successful 2013-14, I thank all of the girls and families for their participation and dedication during the 2012-13 Lady Islanders season. Recap of the Lady Islanders Season 19U: The team took on the Westchester Wild in the playdowns heading for the NYS Tournament. The beat them and then moved on to play the Brewster Bulldogs. There they won one of the two games putting them in a 15 minute playdown mini-game against the Bulldogs. They lost, putting them in a second place position for the State Tournament. The 19U team took third in the MWHA tournament in
Philadelphia. They lost in the championship game to the NJ Colonials, 2-0. The 19U team took second in the GAL Championship. 12U: The 12U’s started the year with a short bench and two brand new hockey players. They ended by taking second place in the MLK Tournament and in the Presidential Power Play Tournament. Took a Silver at the Presidential Power Play Tournament.They displayed an impressive effort winning two and tying one, and outscoring their opponents 11 to 1 going into the championship game! The 14U Team is the 2013 GAL League Champions. 10U: Took first at the First Annual York MLK Tournament and a Gold at the Presidential Power Play Tournament. This team won the First Annual York MLK tournament. The ladies went 4 for 4, with noteworthy contributions by the whole team. Gabby came out with an impressive two shutouts in the tournament, Chloe had two play makers and a hat trick during tournament play. Samantha also had two hat tricks and a game where she scored six goals. Jenna scored her first Lady Islanders goal and Maeve contributed a beautiful assist. Every player on the team got at least one point and we played well together making this a collaborative tournament victory. At the Presidential Power Play 10U fought hard and came together to put out a unified effort, taking home the gold over NOVA, Brewster, and Quakers. The team’s record at the tournament was 4 and 0 rendering them undefeated and once again champions. They participated in the MAWHA Queen of the Hill Tournament in Brewster and played four one-period games with a record of three wins and one tie, moving them ahead of the Brewster Bulldogs by a point to go to the championship game against Darien White. The final game proved to be a nail biter with Darien playing most of the final period with their goalie pulled trying to get a goal to tie the score. The ladies in blue and orange proved to be unstoppable for the second weekend in a row with dominating defensive play that kept their eager opponents from scoring. B

Kristine “Rosie” DeRosa is named Lady Bulldogs 19u Head Coach
The Brewster Lady Bulldogs have signed Coach DeRosa to head coach their U19 AAA (Split Season) National team. As an assistant coach of Manhattaville last year she the Valiants to a great year Rosie played at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI). DeRosa finished her collegiate career with 20 goals and 13 assists in 86 career games with the Engineers. DeRosa has held numerous positions since her time in Troy including her current position as the Manager of Building Operations for Madison Square Garden in New York City. Before that she held a position in community relations and was also the fan development coordinator with the New York Rangers from 2005-06. During that same time period, DeRosa also held a position as an ice maintenance associate at the Palisades Center Ice Rink in West Nyack, N.Y. Prior to that she coached the Ramapo Saints 14U Girls Team in Ramapo, N.Y. where she led the team to several prominent ice hockey tournaments in the tri-state area. DeRosa graduated cum laude from RPI in 2003 with a dual degree in both management and philosophy.

The Long Island Gulls are proud to announce that two former Gulls have been named to the USA Hockey NDTP for the 2013-2014 season. 1997 birth years Jeremy Bracco and Charlie McAvoy were invited to join the program after competing in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Jeremy and Charlie follow in the footsteps of previous Long Island Gulls Ryan Hitchcock, Sonny Milano and Brandon Fortunato who all played with the NDTP this season. Jeremy, a Harvard commit, is a dynamic forward in the offensive zone. His vision and ability to create offense from anywhere on the ice has established him as one of the top forwards in the country. Bracco played Gulls at each of the youth hockey levels including mite, squirt, pee wee and bantam. ”. Jeremy said “Growing up playing for the Gulls was a great experience. It was a very special place for me and helped me develop into the player I am today.” Charlie is one of the most sought after defensemen on the market right now. He continues to develop at both ends of the ice. McAvoy’s ability to create offense and join the rush has distinguished him as a valuable commodity on any blue line. McAvoy is a gifted offensive defenseman who also is a valued power play contributor. Charlie said “I really developed as a player as a Long Island Gull. I feel fortunate enough to be part of the ’97 team that made it to nationals. I’ve had so many good memories on and off the ice as a Gull.” Two years ago Jeremy and Charlie helped lead the

Bracco Selects Harvard
Harvard University has received a commitment for the fall of 2015 from 5’7”, 135 lb. RWJeremy Bracco, who lit it up for the Portledge School and the Long Island Gulls Under-14 Team last winter. A freshman, Bracco led Portledge in scoring with a 15-27-42 line in 20 games played. He also helped lead the U14 Gulls, coached by his father,Mike Bracco, a former Dartmouth goaltender (1990-94), to the Tier I Nationals in Buffalo. The younger Bracco, in four games there, had a 6-5-11 line, good for a tournament-leading 2.75 ppg. In addition, Bracco led the USA Hockey Select 14 Festival in scoring last summer. A 3/17/97 birthdate from Freeport, Long Island, Bracco will play for the New Jersey Rockets (Met League) this coming winter. (Joining him there will be his linemate from the Gulls,Nolan Aibel.) Bracco’s strong suit is his exceptional vision. He sees plays developing, and consistently puts pucks where guys are going to be. He’s a good skater, though not a burner. He’s small but, given that he only turned 15 in March, is likely to grow a bit more.
Fusaro Commits to West Point
Brandon Fusaro is the most recent former Gulls ‘96 to commit to college. Brandon has chosen to play his college hockey at West Point Military Academy. He joins former teammates Hitchcock and Willett as early commits to Division 1 colleges. Brandon is a high powered offensive threat who is going to be able to offer a lot to the Army lineup as soon as he arrives on campus. Brandon has moved on to Applecore

Congratulations to the Millbrook “Coaches for the Cure” team on their fine showing at the Hudson Valley Coaches Against Cancer tournament held at Kiwanis Rink in Saugerties on Saturday, March 30. The MYHA Coaches team went 6-1 during the event, with their only loss coming in the Championship game shootout that followed a 3-3 tie through regulation and a 5-minute overtime period. The highlight of the event was the outstanding play of our youth participant Zack Cookinham, who chipped in with several goals and assists during the event while also providing the “old guys” on the roster with tons of inspiration and enthusiasm! Special thanks go out to all MYHA families and friends who supported the team’s participation & fundraising efforts for this very worthwhile cause.

New York Bobcats Kerr to join New York Bobcats
The New York Bobcats are proud to announce that Kevin Kerr has been hired as the new Head Coach. Kevin comes to the Bobcats by way of Atlanta where this past season Kevin guided the Knights to the Empire League playoffs after finishing the regular season with an impressive 33-5 record. Kevin’s coaching career began as the Head Coach of the North Bay Skyhawks of the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League. His next stop was the International League where he guided the Flint Generals to the playoffs. Kevin then joined the Atlanta Knights in their inaugural season. Kevin guided the first year team to a Southeast Junior Hockey League championship. They finished as the runner up at the National Championships and were ranked in the top three nationally all season long. Kevin then took his team to the Junior B level with in Metropolitan Junior Hockey League. Once there he established the Knights as a perennial national contender. In his first season, Kevin guided the Knights to a 43-1-0-1 record. Kerr’s Knights were the MET league regular season champs, captured the Keegan Cup, and was named MJHL Coach of the year. The Knights finished the season ranked second in the country after losing the National Championship game 4-3 in overtime. Kevin remained in Atlanta until the 2011-2012, when he took a job with the Green Mountain Glades of the EJHL. In Green Mountain, he was put in charge of both the Eastern Junior Hockey League, and Empire Junior Hockey League. Kevin returned to Atlanta this past season after Green Mountain was moved to Portland, Maine. Kevin was selected in the 3rd round (56th overall) of the 1986 NHL Entry Draft. He played over 1000 career games throughout his professional career. He was named to 8 consecutive All Star teams. Kevin set the goal scoring record for minor professional hockey in 2005. The NY Bobcats are very proud to announce that standout forward, Tommy Telesca, has committed to the Bears of SUNY Potsdam for the 2013/2014 season. Tommy will be joining his former teammate, Billy Pascalli, on the Bears’ roster next season. Potsdam is a member of the SUNYAC Conference, which is arguably the strongest Division III Conference in the United States. Tommy becomes the third player from this year’s New York Bobcats to receive a commitment to play collegiate hockey. After playing for Corpus Christi of the North American Hockey League for the first fifteen games of the season, Tommy joined the Bobcats in early November and immediately became a go-to player on the team. Known for his quickness, tenacity and vision on the ice, Tommy finished with a 9-19-28 line in 38 games, earning valuable time on both the powerplay and penalty killing units. Those numbers followed last year’s stellar breakout season when he finished third in scoring among all AJHL players. His overall season line of 28-50-78 placed him second in scoring for the Bobcats. An AJHL All-Star last season, Tommy accumulated a 49-101-150 line in 140 games over his threeyear career with the Bobcats. Those numbers place him among the top offensive players in the history of the organization. His 101 assists during that span are a reflection of his unselfishness and uncanny creativity on the ice. His career +56 was also evidence of his play at both ends of the ice. Tommy came to the Bobcats from the Suffolk PAL Junior B program, where he played during the 09/10 season and qualified for the Junior B National Championship. An MJHL All-Star and Offensive Defensive Player of the Year, Tommy was an integral part of that team’s success. Prior to joining Suffolk PAL, Tommy was a member of the Long Island Royals Bantam 07/08 team and PeeWee 05/06 teams, both of which earned a New York State Tier I Championship and an appearance in the National Championship tournament. In addition to participating in the New York Select 14, 15 and 16 Camps, Tommy was selected for the National 16 Festival in 2009 and earned a Silver Medal at the Empire State games with Team Long Island.

committed to the Ice Knights of SUNY Geneseo for the 2013/2014 season. Geneseo plays in the highly competitive SUNYAC Conference, which is arguably the strongest Division III conference in the country. Located in the historic village of Geneseo in the upstate Finger Lakes region, SUNY Geneseo is a premier public liberal arts college with a rich tradition of academic excellence. The most selective of SUNY institutions, Geneseo is highly ranked in national publications for academic quality and value. As the team’s Captain this past season, J.D.’s leadership manifested itself both on and off the ice. With many new additions to the Bobcats this past season, head coach Mike Coppola looked to J.D. to help reinforce a team first attitude amongst the players. As a returning Bobcat with many years of junior hockey experience, J.D. filled his captaincy role with a much needed focus and commitment. On the ice, J.D.’s play also spoke volumes. Known as a smart, reliable and offensive-minded defenseman, he has been a constant presence and primary contributor on the power play and penalty killing units for the past two seasons. During the 2012/13 season, he accumulated a 4-22-26 line in 52 games. His overall plus/minus rating of + 17 and his 11 power play points were among the team leaders for defensemen. Those numbers followed up last year’s All-Star campaign where J.D. registered 24 points in 55 games for the League Championship Runner-up Bobcats and finished 6th overall among defensemen in league scoring. J.D. played his Junior B and youth hockey in the state of Florida where he played for the 2011 Junior B National Semi-Finalists Palm Beach Hawks. He was a U16 Florida State Champion with the Gulf Coast Flames and participated in a number of Florida and Southeastern regional Select Camps. A strong student who has always placed a priority on his academic work, Geneseo looks to be a terrific fit for J.D.
Bucci Goes to Mercyhurst
Forward, Tommaso Bucci, has committed to the Lakers of Mercyhurst College. Considered a strong academic school, Mercyhurst is a member of the Atlantic Hockey League. Tommaso will join former Bobcats Matthew Zay and Dan O’Donoghue on the Mercyhurst roster. Matt and Dan are currently 1st and 3rd , respectively, for the Lakers in scoring. After playing for Corpus Christi of the North American Hockey League for the first half of the 2012/13 season, Tommaso joined the Bobcats in mid-December and immediately made a significant impact. Playing mostly on
the first line with AJHL All-Stars Patrick Schule and Chris Wallace, Tommaso registered an 8-15-23 line and a very respectable +12 plus/minus rating in only 20 games for the Bobcats. Known for his soft and quick hands, excellent vision on the ice and his gritty and physical play, Bucci added a much needed two-way component at the center position. He also became a mainstay on the power play, earning 6 points with the man advantage. Tommaso played for the Metro Moose Junior B team last season, earning 53 points in only 29 games. In addition to being an MJHL All-Star, he finished in the top twenty in league scoring despite missing a significant number of games. Tommaso is also a Gulls alumnus, having played in the organization numerous years during his youth hockey career.

The SYH will hold a Mites, birth years 2005-2008, “Learn to Play Hockey Program for the beginning ice hockey player. Skaters are asked to have the ability to stand independently on skates. Full equipment is required. This team will have one to two practices/3v3 cross ice scrimmages per week. “Mite Cross Ice Team” - Experienced skaters will participate in a cross ice, 3 on 3 hockey program. Practices will follow the USAHockey ADM program. www.admkids.com. Teams will have two to three practices/cross ice games per week. This team will participate in local and travel jamborees and 3 on 3 cross ice games. There will also be a “Mite Full Ice and Advanced Cross Ice Team.” This team will play in both cross ice games and full ice games and travel tournaments. Will have 3 to 4 practices/games/tournaments per week. ADM instruction and Full Ice concepts will be covered. There will be no spring Player Evaluation Sessions for Mites. SYHA will place Mite-aged players in their appropriate program and team in the Fall, after the first several practices. Mariners Have full Ice Schedule for 2013-2014 At this time the Mariners are happy to announce that they have secured ice at Dorothy Hamill Rink in Greenwich CT, and The Ice Hutch in Mt Vernon NY for the upcoming season. The Mariners were dislocated after Hurricane Sandy destroyed their Rink. They extend their thanks to these facilities for being so welcoming and commodating in their time of need. The Mite team will skate at least once during the week and twice on the weekends. The Squirt, PeeWee and Bantam teams will have two weekday practice sessions and one home game slot on the weekends. The ice time will begin right after Labor Day weekend and will run for 26 weeks. Sessions will include USA ADM clinics, power skating, goal tender clinics in addition to team practices. All Mariners teams will play in the Hudson Valley League.

Guberti historically ranks 4th in overall wins and 1st in winning percentage. Rich has a wealth of coaching experience. A USA Hockey Certified Level 4 Coach, he runs successful year round Pro Player Clinics and Summer Camps. His Westchester Select
tournament teams play in AAA tournaments during the summer on the East Coast. He has served as Hockey Director of Westchester Mariners since 2004 and is the General Manager of the Westchester Dragons Junior Hockey organization. Over the last 10 years he has won major championships at every youth hockey level. From Squirts to Midget Majors, his teams have won league titles, attended NYS championships and gone on to Silver Sticks Internationals in both Port Huron Michigan and Toronto Canada. Coach Guberti has placed a number of his players on NCAA college hockey teams and has also seen some continue into the Pro ranks.

Steve Tosi Squirt Minor Coach: Steve is a USA Hockey Level II Certified coach. This is
Steve’s third year with the Mariner program and fifth year coaching. Steve has been a player, coach and avid hockey fan for over four decades. He prides himself on educating both players and parents about the game of hockey while fostering a high level of sportsmanship and dedication. His youth hockey experience started in New York City while playing in the Greater New York City Ice Hockey League competing in both house leagues and for the organization’s travel teams in the 1970’s. In the late 70’s he joined the Westchester Wings, playing at the midget and junior levels where he traveled and competed in state championships. Steve, a two time MVP and top scorer, captained a Wing junior team to a LIAHL championship that also placed at the state championship. He no longer plays hockey but is very content coaching his son James and all his teammates in the Mariner program. Coach Steve previously served as Mite Director and Head Coach.
Jim Coppola, PeeWee Coach: Jim Coppola is a Level 2 certified USA Hockey Instruc-
tor and has been with the Mariners program for four years. He is a two-time All-Ivy athlete who preaches to his players to be “Students of the game” and to thrive on competition. Coach Coppola was a three sport HS Varsity letterman from Long Island who has shown the same versatility in his coaching – Hockey, Baseball, Football and Basketball at levels ranging from “Youth” right on up to the “College” level. He is a highly regimented and principled coach who stresses hard work, sportsmanship, team camaraderie, and an overall passion for the game of hockey. He still competes in local men’s hockey leagues and his son, AJ, is in his 5th year with the Mariners program.

Dave Smith is currently starting his seventh season as a coach with the Mariners, having participated at the squirt, peewee and bantam levels. Coach Smith has a Level 4 certification with USA Hockey. In addition to his coaching duties Coach Smith also serves as the Mariners ACE Coordinator responsible for ensuring that the coaching staff is properly credentialed and trained according to USA Hockey and the New York State Amateur Hockey Association requirements.

Westchester Dragons
The Dragons will have a Junior Full Season and a Junior Half Season team for the 2013-2014. The Dragons have added Peter Thomas to join Coaches James Fox, Victor Nordensen and Mike Ritaccio. Since 2003 Coach Thomas has coached the varsity team at Rye High School. In that time the team has won 3 sectional titles and I NYS regional championship. As a player at Rye High School he won 4 Section 1 championships and one NYS Regional championship under NY State Hall of Fame Coach, John Zegras. Coach Fox begins his second season with the Westchester Dragons. Last year, the second season for the Dragons, Coach Fox led the Junior Elite team to a first place finish in the IJHL. Coach Fox came to the Dragons after coaching four successful seasons with the U16 Tier II Westchester Mariners, most recently taking them to the league championship game in the 2011-2012 season. Coach Fox grew up in Austin, TX playing AA hockey for the Austin Jr. Ice Bats as well as the Austin Roadrunners. As captain of the majority of his teams, he led several teams to multiple national championships, winning 3 bronze medals and one gold. His career was ended short due to an MCL tear during a high school game in his senior year. He graduated with honors from Manhattanville College and is now working at Morgan Stanley, residing in Stamford, CT. Coach Nordenson begins his second season with the Westchester Dragons. Last season, Coach Nordenson led the Junior Elite team to a first place finish in the IJHL. Coach Nordenson joined the Dragons after one suc-

NY Hockey OnLine cessful season (2011-12) with the U16 Tier II Westchester Mariners, where he led the team to the league championship game. Coach Nordenson grew up in Sweden, playing for Djurgardens IF for both the U20 and U18 Super Elite teams. In his final year, as a captain, he led his team to the national semifinals. In 2006, his adventures led him to the NAHL, more specifically the Alaska Avalanche. He was the leading scorer for the Avalanche, which earned him an opportunity to play NCAA hockey for the Manhattanville Valiants. As a Valiant, he won two ECAC West championships, and he served as an assistant captain during his senior year. In 2011, he graduated from Manhattanville College as the top finance major, and was nominated for the StudentAthlete award. Currently, he works for MasterCard in Purchase, NY, while residing in Stamford, CT.

The Prospect division will be half season and cater to high school players looking to gear up for their season and also get use to college style games. Dragon IHPL Inaugural Season A Success!
The Westchester Dragons completed their season at the Prudential Center (home of the NJ Devils)with a lost in overtime to the Maine Moose 6-5. The loss eliminated the Dragons from making the IHPL finals and was only their 2nd overtime loss of the season. The team finished the season 22-16-4 with 2 OTL. Chris Ramondelli led the IHPL with over 84 points in 42 games. Other key players where Forwards Neil Jacobson, Nick Gross, Phil Variano, Defensemen Joe Ramondelli, Justin Dennis and Tanner Jergensen. Lukas Harb was solid in net all season, posting a 18-11-2-1 record. He allowed under 3 goal a game in 34 games played. His 1800 minutes 5 shutouts and 18 wins led the IHPL for the season. Highlights for the season included making the finals in 2 out of the 4 tournaments they attended. The Dragons have at least 5 players headed to play in college and look forward to announcing more in the coming months. Dragons GM/Coach Rich Guberti stated the following, “ I could not be more proud of the players we had this season. They showed up and competed every game. Hurricane Sandy closed our rink but the guys didn’t skip a beat and always worked hard. We make it to the finals in 2 tournaments and where 18 seconds away from making the finals this past weekend. The future looks bright!” The Dragons now prepare for the spring season by placing 2 tournament teams in Tournaments such as Pre Draft, Chowder Cup and others on the East Coast. Winter Tryouts will start April 8 with the Dragons looking forward to adding more players to their successful organization. The club is also working on a major announcement concerning their rink for next season. The IHPL is also adding teams for next season. The league will have a North Atlantic Junior A and Junior B

Celebrating a National Championship by Randy Schultz “I couldn’t think of a better place to bring a championship team than to Lake Placid, the home of the Miracle On Ice. “And it isn’t often that New York State has a team that wins a national championship. This year we had a team that won a national championship from New York State and not only that, but the team was from the North Country. “The fact that it came from o n e of our smalle r hockey associations made it even more special. “ Which is how Mario Pusateri, North Section President, talked about what would be occurring at the North Section Spring Meeting being held on a Sunday in mid-April. Moments later the Chazy Flyers, winners of the Tier II Girls 19U National Hockey Championships in San Jose, CA, arrived at the Herb Brooks Memorial Arena. They gathered outside the doors of the Hall of Fame Room inside the arena where representatives from the different hockey organizations were holding their meeting. As the first item on the agenda, the Flyers were introduced to the more than 50 people seated in the room. Proudly displaying their championship banner, as well as trophy, the players posed for photos and proudly accepted the applause as kind remarks regarding their team.
April was a wild month for the Flyers, especially at the National Championships. They lost to the Keweesaw Storm, 6-2. It turned out to be Chazy’s only loss. They made it to the Championship game, easily defeating the East Coast Wizards, 5-0. Facing the Storm again in the final contest, Chazy outlasted Keweenaw, 3-2, winning in double-overtime. For head coach Ray Guay, his coaching staff and the players, it was truly an amazing journey. “I started with a U14 team about 10 years ago,” remembered Guay. “I kept this certain group of girls together for as long as I could. “There were six of those girls that I managed to keep together. Along the way we picked up some girls from Saranac Lake and Lake Placid to give us 12 skaters and two goalies. “Unfortunately, one of our goalies got hurt. And another girls didn’t get her number of games. She had five and needed five more. “She had her vacation set up and didn’t think she was even going to play hockey. So we asked New York State if they would sanction her for the Nationals only as a backup goalie. “Only if our regular goalie got hurt would she be allowed to play. Kiely Reagan turned out to be that backup goalie.” (continued on page 45)

CLARKSON Two former Clarkson players recently were honored by their respective American Hockey League teams. Mark Borowiecki was named captain of the Binghamton Senators and Brandon DeFazio was selected Bridgeport Sound Tigers AHL Man of the Year.
PLATTSBURGH The Cardinals were third in the nation among Division III programs in average attendance this past season behind only Utica College and Oswego. An average of 1,840 walked through the doors of Stafford Ice Arena.
ST. LAWRENCE Senior forward Kyle Flanagan (Canton) was named First Team East AllAmerican by the American Hockey Coaches Association. Teammates Greg Carey and George Hughes were Second Team selections.
Potsdam
Eight members of the SUNY Potsdam women’s hockey team have been named to the ECAC Women’s West All-Academic team for the 2012-2013 season. Seniors Nadine Cunningham, Jen Conophy and Katie Komsa, juniors Brittany Lucky and Dawna Salvarinas (Mississauga, Ontario/Brampton Thunder), and sophomores Izzy Fayerman, Emilee Hazelden and Alexandra Holowka each represent the Bears on the team. Cunningham and Komsa have made the list for the third year in a row, while Lucky and Salvarinas receive the honors for the second consecutive year. Cunningham played a key role in the Bears’ defense in 22 games this season. Over her career she has played in 86 games, totaling three goals and six assists for nine career points. Conophy had a strong season in between the pipes for Potsdam. Starting in 13 games she posted a 3-9-2 record, a .886 save percentage and a 3.65 goals-against-average. She notched her second career shut out against Buffalo State on Feb. 17 to help the Bears’ clinch their second straight playoff spot. In her career, Conophy has played in 60 games with a 20-22-7 record. Her 20 wins are the most in the program’s NCAA history. Komsa finished her career as a Bear having played in 96 games, scoring 10 goals and adding 21 assists for a total of 31 points. This season she served as a team captain and saw time in 25 games. She tied her single season best for assists with six. Lucky also served as a captain in 2012-13. She anchored the defense again this season, while provid-

ing some clutch offense, finishing with three goals and three assists for six points. Salvarinas had a career year for Potsdam, splitting time in goal. She finished the season with a 7-4-0 record, a .917 save percentage and a 2.47 goals-againstaverage. Salvarinas also recorded a program record three shutouts this year. Fayerman had another impressive year for the Bears, seeing time in all 26 games. She recorded seven goals and five assists for a total of 12 points. During her career she has played in all 51 games and she has totaled 33 points on 14 goals and 19 assists. Hazelden provided the Potsdam offense with much needed energy this season. During her second tour as a Bear she scored one goal and added a career-best eight assists, quadrupling her total from the previous season. This season she saw time in all 26 games and has played in 40 games in her career. Holowka continued to contribute to the Bears’ offense this year. She played in all 26 games, netted seven goals and added four assists for 11 points. In her two seasons in a Bears uniform, Holowka has played in all 51 games, scoring 12 goals and recording six assists for 18 points. The 2012-2013 season proved to be another solid one for the Bears (10-14-2, 6-5-1 ECAC West). Potsdam was able to reach the postseason for the second year in a row and the third time in program history.
CLARKSON The Clarkson University Women’s Hockey team will play in its first ever outdoor game when the Golden Knights face off against RIT at Frontier Field in Rochester, NY on Saturday, December 14, 2013. The Clarkson vs. RIT women’s game will be a major part of a 10-day festival that will take place from December 13 to December 22, 2013, serving as a celebration of hockey spent outdoors in downtown Rochester. Games times will be announced at a later date. “We are really looking forward to playing in this event,” stated Clarkson co-head coach Shannon Desrosiers. “It is going to be a great experience for our
players and something we are fortunate to be a part of.” The festival begins with a regular season American Hockey League game at Frontier Field between the Rochester Americans and an opponent that will be announced at a later date on December 13. As part of the event at Frontier Field, which is home to Triple-A baseball’s Rochester Red Wings of the International League, the downtown ballpark will also host several Section V High School hockey games, an Alumni Game featuring former players from the Amerks and Buffalo Sabres, and community events. Blocks of ice time will be made available to the public for corporate events, private parties and youth/adult hockey practices and games. “Monroe County is delighted to host this week filled with winter fun and great hockey at a truly unique location, Frontier Field,” said County Executive Maggie Brooks. “I applaud the Rochester Americans and Rochester Red Wings for coordinating what will be a memorable week not just for hockey fans.” Two standouts on the Clarkson University Women’s Hockey team, junior Erica Howe (Ottawa, ONT) and freshman Erin Ambrose (Keswick, ONT) were named to the All-USCHO.com All-Star teams. Howe, the Golden Knights’ starting goaltender and Ambrose, the Green and Gold’s top defenseman, helped to lead Clarkson to its best season ever with a 28-10 overall record and an eighth-place ranking in the final USCHO.com national poll. The Knights were tied for second in the ECAC Hockey standings, one point shy of first, with an 18-4 league mark. Honored as ECAC Goaltender of the Year for the second consecutive season, Howe was a mainstay for the Golden Knights. She backboned the Knights’ stingy defensive effort and played the second most minutes in the country (2217:21). Also named a FirstTeam ECAC All-Star, she played more minutes than any other ECAC goaltender (1315:38) and posted the most wins in the conference (18). Howe ranked among the best netminders in Division I with a .931 save percentage and a 1.73 goals against average. She posted the second most wins in Division I with a 2710 overall record, including six shutouts.

Junior forward Jamie Lee Rattray was the recipient of the Ron Frazer Award for the second year in a row. Named in tribute to Clarkson Women’s Hockey’s first coach, the honor is presented to a player who has proven to elevate her game in key situations and who has made significant contributions to the team’s success. Rattray was a clutch goal scorer who tied for the national lead in game-winning goals with nine. The Kanata, Ontario native set a Clarkson record for points in a season overall, averaging 1.44 points per game with 52 on 22 goals and 30 assists through 36 games. Selected as a second-team ECAC All-Star, Rattray tallied at least one point in each of the last seven games and scored a team-high eight power-play goals and three shorthanded markers. She finished with a +24 plus/minus rating. Freshman standout Erin Ambrose was selected Clarkson’s Rookie of the Year. One of the most dominant defensemen in the country, Ambrose was also chosen as ECAC Hockey Rookie of the Year and a second-team league all-star. The Keswick, Ontario native was the leading rookie scorer from the blueline nationally with 36 points and one of only three defensemen in the country who averaged over a ppg (1.06). Ambrose, along with Rattray, set a Clarkson single-season assist record with 30 overall and posted a team-high +25 plus/minus rating. She was the top scoring freshman in ECAC Hockey with 19 points (316) in 20 league games. Ambrose was selected three times as ECAC Hockey Rookie of the Month (October, December, February). Junior forward Vanessa Gagnon was the recipient of the Booster Club’s Unsung Hero Award. The award is presented to the player(s) who always puts the team first and serves as an excellent role model to her teammates and the community. Gagnon was a productive offensive force for the Green and Gold, recording 21 points on 10 goals and 11 assists skating in all 38 games. A native of St. Constant, Quebec, she tallied two power-play goals and three game-winners, and recorded four goals and two assists over the final five games. Gagnon, Clarkson’s ECAC Hockey

Guay had a good feeling about this team and for good reason. “Last year the 19U team won their first State title,” continued Guay. “We were off to Texas and got a good feel of what a National Tournament was all about. “That’s why I felt that we really had a chance to win this year. This team was jelling. “It was huge winning the State title again.
And it was huge to go back to the Nationals again for the second time in two years. “I’m very proud of these girls. They followed directions and did what I told them to do. “These girls grew up on the ADM system. Small games. “I was brought up on pond hockey. I turned these girls into pond hockey players that turned into good, heads-up hockey players.” Guay knew going into that championship game that his team had a chance. “That Michigan team had really taken it to us the first time (6-2 Chazy loss),” added Guay. “I knew we would have to step up our game in that championship game. “Things just fell into place for us. I did what I had to do to win. “They did what they had to do to win. They had been winning over the past couple of years.
“This was just icing on the cake for them.” B

West News and Notes Buffalo Bison’s Girls 19’s Lose in Quarter Finals in National Championships
T
he Buffalo Bison’s Girl’s 19U Team lost in the Quarter Finals of the National Championships held in San Jose, California. The Bison’s opened with a win over Team Pittsburgh by a score of 9-4. The two teams combined for a total of 89 shots in the contest. On Day Two of the National Championships, the Bison’s started out slow, but came from behind to win by a score of 5-3 over New Jersey. To close out the preliminary round, game #3 would be against Honey Baked the Michigan representative. The game was scoreless until late in the first period until the Bison’s got into penalty trouble. Honey Baked scored 5 consecutive Power Play goals as the Bison’s lost by a score of 6-0. By the Buffalo Bison’s winning 2 games out of 3 in the preliminary round, it would allow the Bison’s to advance to the Quarter Finals against perennial power Shattuck St. Mary’s. The quarter final game was outstanding fast paced game as both teams traded scoring opportunities. There was no score with a little over 2 minutes left in the game, as Shattuck scored on a scramble in front of the Bison’s net. Although the Bison’s fell short of a National Cham-

he Buffalo Stars will conduct a contest to find the next Apprentice Junior Coach within the Buffalo Stars Organization. A search will begin later this month to find interested candidates who wish to compete to win the Head Empire Coaching Job for the 2014-15 season. The Stars hope to select 8 finalists from a group of 250300 candidates. The 8 finalists will be broken into 2 teams that will compete in a variety of hockey related tasks such as creating a hockey school. The Candidates will need to display a level of hockey knowledge, creativity and marketing. The final 2 will face off in a major competition sometime in early January 2014 after which time the winner will be announced.

Girls Camp in Buffalo
S
ummer at Nichols, a week-long hockey camp for girls, will be held August 12-16, 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. The Camp, hosted by Nichols School and coordinated by Scott Welch, is in its third year. The General Program focuses on skating, stick handling, Hockey concepts, shooting, passing, and team play. Players must have at least two years of travel hockey to qualify. An Elite Program is offered to girls who have at least four years of travel or high school hockey. This is an intense and advanced program of high speed skill development, advanced hockey concepts and team strategy. Everyone is on the ice for three hours and goaltenders receive one hour of dedicated goalie instruction.

Rosen Receives Duffett Award by Randy Schultz

ob Rosen was named as the 28th recipient of the J. Michael Duffett Award. It is presented annually to a coach whose contributions to amateur hockey in Western New York “best exemplifies the knowledge, teaching, love of the game and gentle humanity of Mike.” “This means a lot to me to win this, especially knowing the Duffett family,” commented Rosen, a native of Buffalo. “It is truly a great honor for me.” Rosen has been a member of the Amherst Youth Hockey Organization for 30 years, leading his teams to four national championships during that time. Rosen’s 1987-88 Junior “B” squad went 40-0-0, posting USA Hockey’s first undefeated season at that level. For the past 23 years, Rosen has also served as the head coach of the Williamsville North varsity boys team. Throughout that time the Spartans captured four state titles, including an undefeated season in 2011. A two-time New York State Coach of the Year, Rosen is the active leader for most wins by a high school coach in New York State. “There is a group of players that just
graduated in 2012 that I coached from the time they were Mites,” remarked Rosen, a graduate of Williamsville North High School. “To see them grow up from little kids to winning a State Championship in 2011 was pretty special to me. “Certainly winning that first State championship was also special. And winning with that Junior ‘B’ team was special too.” The 2013 Duffett Award winner also served as an assistant coach at Canisius College for five years and coached the New York State team at the 1988 Hockey USA Select-17 National Tournament. Rosen has also been involved in the annual Bowman Cup Showcase event for seven of the past nine years. “I love coaching the game,” said Rosen. “Hockey to me is also friendships. “There are kids I grew up playing hockey with that I’m still friends with today. To me that’s the biggest thing you can get out of hockey.
“I’ve also had great assistant coaches working with me over the years. I just want to make things fun for the kids. “I think that as long as the kids walk away with something positive, had a good time and gained friendships out of it I’ve been successful. “To get the kids to work as one and have the attitude of it’s us against everyone else, that’s a big thing. I think that’s what has worked for me.” The Sabres established the award in 1984 in memory of Duffett. Duffett was a student of the game and a coach with the Buffalo Bisons and Amherst Hockey Association. He was a standout player at Nichols School and Clarkson College. Duffett was working in the Sabres hockey department under Scotty Bowman and Roger Neilson at the time of his death following a long battle with cancer.B

Bill Gray’s Gets Naming Rights to Rochester Arena

ill Gray’s, a hometown favorite restaurant since 1928,has signed an agreement for 30 years for the naming rights to the former Sports Centre at Monroe Community College. The new name will be Bill Gray’s Regional Iceplex and includes an extension of the existing lease for Bill Gray’s Restaurant and Tap Room, Snack Bar and Abbott’s Frozen Custard to operate at the facility for 30 years.

he Hamburg Hawks Squirt Canadiens competed in the Cazenovia Hockey Founders Tournament. The Hawks had a record of 3-0 with round-robin victories over the Depew Saints, Buffalo Regals and Cazenovia Chiefs. The Hawks went on to defeat the Regals 4-3 in the semi-finals. onroe County Youth Hockey is very excited to announce a New Enhanced House Program for the 2013-2014 Season. The structure of our House Program is designed to allow a player to grow at his or her own pace while still achieving the USA Hockey goals: to play, love and excel in the game. The Traditional House program will remain in place for players to continue their development, gain knowledge and enjoy the game of hockey. Emphasis will be on continued skill development, team play, sportsmanship, fun and preparing the players to progress to the next level. This year MCYH is offering a new opportunity within their house hockey program: The Enhanced House program has been created to support the more advanced house players who are ready to progress to the next level of competition. This program will provide players an additional 30% more ice time to work on skill development and more advanced team play while still maintaining the emphasis on sportsmanship and fun. With the expected higher level of play, selection for these teams will be based on a player meeting particular evaluation criteria. These teams will continue to participate in the Empire Amateur Hockey Conference just as the Traditional House program does. The idea behind the change is to help drive the skill level with extra ice similar to our travel program yet allow the selected players to compete in the Empire Conference league play (House A). Brandwene is the first-ever coach of the Penn State Women. He has over 20 years of coaching and administrative experience, including serving as assistant coach for Team USA’s men’s squad at the 2003 World University Games. Dan Ringwald, Shane Madolora and Jared DeMichiel were named to the Atlantic Hockey Association 10th Anniversary Team announced by the league. Ringwald was a first team selection, while Madolora garnered second team honors, and DeMichiel earned third team accolades.
Adimey has been with the program since 2011. He played his youth hockey in Amherst where they finished up National runner up three years in a row. He went on to play junior hockey with Niagara Scenic (Buffalo Jr. Sabres) and high school hockey for Canisius. He went on to play at the United States Military Academy at West Point. Upon graduation, he was sent to Germany and continued his hockey career playing for Viernheim and the Adler Mannheim. Ron also coaches with the Buffalo Bisons girls youth organization and has been active coaching since his return from Germany.

he idea for the ‘Pepsi Hockey Invitational’ began back in 1976. My dad (Glenn Grundtisch) and John McFall were trying to come up with ideas of how to get the hockey (Holiday and Leisure) rinks going. “They had the idea of running a hockey tournament. They talked to Pepsi, specifically the Pastor family. “Working with Irwin Pastor, the trio came up with the idea of a house league tournament. Twelve teams participated and Pepsi paid for everything. “Here we are today hosting the 37th Annual Pepsi Hockey Invitational.” That is how Mark Grundtisch described how one of the largest youth hockey gatherings in the United States was born. “Originally back in 1976 the tourney was known as the ‘Pepsi Tournament of Champions,’” continued Grundtisch, part of the ownership group of the Holiday and Leisure Rinks that includes Glenn, Mark and his brother, Paul. “It has been growing ever since. “It began by inviting mostly local teams. Then things began to evolve. “We changed a couple of the formats. We started by offering a tournament party for the parents. “We then began to attract a lot of out of town teams and a lot of Canadian teams. Teams began to come in from Southern Ontario in Canada, as well as the Rochester and Syracuse areas.

We begin on Friday morning and run through early Sunday evening.” Grundtisch continued to explain the type of teams that participate in the Tourney. “The oldest players we’ve had are midgets,” said Grundtisch “We’ve only had midgets for three or four of the years. “Usually it mites and mini-mites up to bantams. Those are our typical age groups. “And we usually run the tourney at the end of the kids hockey season. It’s end of the season fun hockey. “It was designed for house league hockey teams which is what we specialized in the beginning of our rinks existence.” The history of the two rinks is quite interesting. Leisure Rinks is the only “private” ice rink built in Western New York that has operated continuously, without closing for any reasons, since its inception. Leisure was built in 1973 at a time when 22 Ice Rinks were in the planning stages in the area. Leisure and the former Sabreland (now Hockey Outlet) were the only two built. Leisure was also the home of the NHL Buffalo Sabres for eight years, as well as the Sabres Hockey School. The West Seneca Cougars Jr. “B” team, which competed in the how defunct Thruway League, originated from Leisure.

“Over the years we’ve had teams from Alaska, California, Florida, Texas and even Sweden, who happened to be in the area when the tournament was held. It is quite a unique situation for a house league tournament. “And we have a rule that if a team comes from more than 600 miles away, we won’t even charge them to play. They get in for free. “Each year we continued to add a few more teams. By 1991 we hit our all-time high with 311 teams.
“That is when we were running the tournament for six weekends instead of five like we do today. So we had gone from a single weekend in 1976 to six weekends by 1991. “We ran it at six weekends for several years, which averaged out to about 60 teams every weekend for six

When NHL hockey came on the Buffalo scene in 1970 hockey fever exploded. One result of that was the construction of Holiday Twin Rinks in 1971. It quickly became the original practice facility of the Sabres. F o l l o w i n g early struggles, Holiday Twin was taken over by Grundtisch in 1974. Throughout its history, Holiday Twin has been home to the University of Buffalo Div. I men’s hockey program, the Canisius College Golden Griffins, many top high school hockey programs and the Buffalo Jr. Sabres. Today, Holiday Twin is home to the Buffalo Regals Youth Hockey Association. Founded in 1955 by Bob Westphal, the Regals are one of the oldest surviving hockey organizations in the United States. Today, it is the Pepsi Hockey Invitational that the Arena’s are best known for. Grundtisch also explained what the Tourney means to the local economy. “It is worth millions of dollars to the local economy,”

USA Hockey News NY’s Stephen Gionta Named to 2013 US Men’s National Team

ochester’s Stephen Gionta (New Jersey Devils/ Boston College), a forward, was among five more players added to the United State’s Men’s National Team. Gionta’s previous Team USA experience includes playing on the 2001 U.S. Men’s National Under-18 Team and participating in the US National Team Development Program. Others named were Goaltender John Gibson (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and forwards Ryan Carter (White Bear Lake, Minn./New Jersey Devils/Minnesota State Univ.), Drew LeBlanc (Duluth, Minn./Chicago Blackhawks/St. Cloud State Univ.) and David Moss (Livonia, Mich./Phoenix Coyotes/Univ. of Michigan). The 2013 U.S. Men’s National Team that will compete at the 2013 International Ice Hockey Federation Men’s World Championship being held in Helsinki, Finland, and Stockholm, Sweden May 3 through 19. Team USA’s roster now includes 12 forwards, eight defensemen and three goaltenders on its roster. The maximum roster size is 25, which includes three goaltenders and 22 forwards and defensemen.
Three NY Women Head to National Camp

SA Hockey invited 41 players to its U.S. Women’s National Team Selection Camp being held at the Olympic Center in Lake Placid, N.Y., June 16-23.
Among them are three New York natives including Courtney Burke, Josephine Pucci and Kelley Steadman. Burke comes from Albany and plays for the University of Wisconsin. Pucci, Pearl River, plays at Harvard and Plattsuburgh native Steadman played for Mercyhurst College and is currently with the Boston Plates. Also named were Cornell’s Alyssa Gagliardi and RPI’s Jordan Smelker. The camp will be used to determine the U.S. Women’s National Team roster that will train together and participate in various competitions in the build-up to the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi, Russia. USA Hockey will unveil the players selected to the U.S. Women’s National Team on June 24 and that group will continue to train in Lake Placid until June 27. The final 21-player U.S. Olympic Women’s Ice Hockey Team roster is expected to be announced in late December 2013.

Over 400 players vied for an opportunity to participate in the 2013 camp. Named were: Select 17: Taylar Cianfarano, Allison Gasuik, Toni Ann Miano, Madison Sasone and Brandy Streeter. Select 16: Elizabeth Gerace, Kalie Grant, Cailey Hutchison, Nichole Mensi, Caroline Ross, Olivia Zafuto. Select 15: Abby Cleary, Rachel Deperio, Jordan Emerson, Bailey Lewczyk, Brittani Mingoia, Ava Simoncelli, Lila Toczek and Abigail Welch. The Tournament opened with Canada defeating the US 3-2 in a shootout. Team USA answered back by defeating the rest of their opponents--Finland, Switzerland. Kelley Steadman, Plattsburgh, was a member of the squad. Steadman plays for the Boston Blades of the CWHL.

Lewczyk helped the NAHA Winterhawks bring home the Gold and was named MVP at the 2012 Manon Rheaume Invitational Tournament. She had 27 saves, including a penalty shot, in a 2-1 OT win vs Detroit Little Caesars. With the Buffalo Bisons 14U team she had 32 saves on 34 shots defending the Bison’s National Championship and took the bronze at the USA Hockey National Championships in 2012. The Bisons beat the defending Mid-Fairfield team in double overtime 3-2. Team USA Highlights Men’s The Men’s 18U team lost to Canada 3-2 and brought home the Silver Medal from the 2013 IIHF Men’s World U18 Championship. NY native Steve Santini received the Directorate Award as the best defenseman in the tournament. Team USA beat Canada in the opener 4-1 followed by a loss to Russia, 3-4 and wins over Czech Republic, Latvia, Sweden and Russia in the Semi-finals to meet up once again with Canada. They suffered one other loss and that was to Finland. This is the 10th consecutive year that Team USA 18U has medaled.
Sled Hockey The USA Sled Hockey Team took the Silver at the 2013 International Paralympic Committee World Championships. The Team beat all of their opponents including Sweden, Norway, Czech Republic and Russia before losing to Canada 1-0 in the finals. Buffalo’s Paul Schaus (Buffalo Sabres Sled Hockey Team) had a goal and an assist, his goal coming in the first game against Sweden. Lancaster’s Adam Page (Buffalo Sabres) and Buffalo’s Alexi Salamone (Buffalo Sabres) had an assist each during the tournament.

Picture Page / Page 60 The Kenmore Girl’s Varsity Ice Hockey Team were invited to hold a shoot-out between periods of the Buffalo Sabres game. And Coaches Miller and Orlowski experienced the feeling of coaching from the Sabres’ bench.
The Buffalo Sabres broke ground on the new HarborCenter. Dignitaries and Sabres alumni were among the guests who took part in the ceremony. Putting in the first shovels were Mark Polancarz, Cliff Benson, Terry and Kim Pegula and Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown. Alumni taking part included Pat LaFontaine, Mike Robitaille, Rene Robert, Danny Gare, the Pegulas, Darcy Rieger, Larry Playfair, Rob Ray and Michael Peca.
