Singers from the tristate area and Philadelphia gathered in a Tribute to Billie Holiday, one of the greatest jazz singers whose work will live as long as people love music. In this way jazz singers kept in touch with their roots and inspiration, and made new friends and kept the old. The Site was BEA's, one of the most charming new entries into the restaurant scene in New York City, at 403 West 43 Street, near 9th Avenue, just minutes away from the Broadway Theatre hub. BILLIE HOLIDAY, A SINGER WITH GENIUS, ICON OF JAZZ VOCALS
Billie Holiday was not born on Easy Street with a silver spoon in her mouth. Born Eleanora Fagan when her mother was 13 years old, her obstacles included a mother who involved her in prostitution, a childhood rape, a father who rejected her, jail at 15, drugs, and lack of formal schooling. She was also a musical genius; surrounded by the best jazz musicians, she composed great songs, made the trite songs of the day sound better with melodic invention and sophisticated rhythmic combinations...and always showed non pareil soul, verve, and honesty. By overcoming all her early obstacles to become one of the greatest singers of all time, Billie Holiday deserves more than the respect society shows princesses or heiresses. Billie Holiday brought jazz around the world and still retains a crown given her by millions of fans. The Jazz Culture, V.III:113
