Caught the Singers‘ Jam, a weekly social whirl at the Thalia, part of the Syphony Space complex on Broadway and 95th Street on Monday nights. Singers have always provided many gigs to musicians, and there are many open mics throughout the city, usually manned by exceptional musicians in the rhythm section, and the jam at the Thalia is no exception, with David Pearl, keyboards and Jared Wasler on drums, and D’Ambrose as the MC, who is a seasoned performer in musicals and pop. Mr. Pearl is a versatile and talented musician, and Mr. Wasler showed taste and talent in his performance on the drums. A special feature of the Monday Night Singers Jams is the ̏FSpot“ where chosen singers perform a short set of their own songs. On December 9, 2013, that singer was Laura Snells (possesor of a personable voice) from Hawaii who played the ukelele on one song and piano on another and did two duets. Mr. Pearl avails himself to rehearse with the F Stop singers. He is a diverse musician, arranger, composer and has written a number of books on music, from classical to jazz. This Monday Marion Sollivan (who sang Cole Porter’s Night and Day“ in a dynamic style with her own sound) was there with a cloche of singers from her workshop, including Jo Marchese and Maggie Malone. There were perhaps 50 singers, a melange including many jazz singers, Broadway singers, pop, Motown, folk and original music, and various forms of fusion. The jam is hosted by D’Ambrose and Mr. Pearl, the bandleader. OBITUARYCHICO HAMILTON by L Hamanaka

Chico Hamilton passed on Monday, November 25 in New York City at the age of 92, one of a growing club of musicians who worked as a musician/composer for close to decades. Chico Hamilton was born on September 20th, 1921 in Los Angeles. He was a charter member of Gerry Mulligan's band and was known for establishing the west coast cool jazz sound. He was recorded on Pacific Jazz, Colulmbia, Soul Note, Impulse and Elektra and became a leader in 1955. Mr. Hamilton was part of the jazz scene at his high school, went out early with Lionel Hampton, and had classmates in high school like Charles Mingus, Illinois Jacquet, Ernie Royal, Dexter Gordon, Buddy Collette and Jack Kelso. By 1946 he was the house drummer at Billy Berg's nightclub. After a stint in the armed forces Mr. Hamilton did gigs with Slim & Slam, T-Bone Walker, Lester Young, Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Charlie Barnett, Billy Eckstine, Nat King Cole, Sammy Davis Jr., Billie Holiday, Gerry Mulligan and Lena Horne. He worked in Gerry Mulligan's quartet in 1952 with Chet Baker, a group that did not have a pianist. Mr. Hamilton recorded over 60 albums as a leader. He had a distinctive sound on the drums with his “Original Quintet” with his drums, Carson Smith on bass, Jim Hall on guitarl, Fred Katz on cello, and Buddy Collette on flute. In 1962 he combined his drum sound with Albert Stinson on bass, Gbor Szabo on guitar, George Bohanon on trombone, and Charles Lloyd on tenor sax. Partially due to his being from L.A., Mr. Hamilton appeared in the 1941 film “You'll Never Get Rich” staring Fred Astaire, and his band was featured in the 1957 film noir classic “Sweet Smell The Jazz Culture, V.II:11

of Success” starring Tony Curtis & Burt Lancaster. Mr. Hamilton also performed "Blue Sands" in the 1959 Newport Jazz Festival documentary "Jazz on a Summer's Day." Mr. Hamilton went a step further by composing the soundtrack for Roman Polanski’s thriller “Repulsion” starring Catherine Deneuve. Chico Hamilton moved to New York City in 1965 and formed his own music production company, scoring "Portrait ofWillie Mays", a children's series "Gerald McBoing-Boing", and working on Madison Avenue scoring hundreds of commercials for TV and radio, role modeling as an entrepreneur in the music business. In 1987 Hamilton helped found the Jazz & Contemporary Music Program at New School University. In 1989 Mr. Hamilton debuted his Euphoria ensemble with which he toured extensively in the US, Canada, Europe and South America. He recorded frequently, including a string of 10 + recordings for the Joyous Shout! label with guest appearances from the likes of Love frontman Arthur Lee, vocalist and successful actor Bill Henderson, trombonist George Bohanon, bass trombonist Jimmy Cheatham, rhythm & blues vocalist Fontella Bass, guitarist Shuggie Otis, trumpeter Jon Faddis, percussionist Jaimoe of the Allman Brothers Band, and vocalist Jose James. Mr. Hamilton was a remarkable vocalist and scat singer. Mr. Hamilton helped the careers of Paul Horn, Rodney Jones, Eric Dolphy, Ron Carter, Gabor Szabo, Charles Lloyd, Larry Coryell & Arthur Blythe and countless others. Chicao Hamilton was recognized in 2007 at the Kennedy Center as a “Living Jazz Legend”, was a member of the President’s Council on the Arts, received an NEA Jazz Master fellowship. This past October Hamilton recorded newly composed material with his longstanding Euphoria ensemble, with Paul Ramsey on bass, Evan Schwam on flute, baritone, tenor, alto & soprano saxes, Jeremy Carlstedt on drums, Mayu Saeki on flute & Nick Demopolous on 4

guitar, along with featured guest appearances from trombonist George Bohanon and fellow NEA Jazz Master trumpeter Jimmy Owens, for his “The Inquiring Mind” CD to be released on Joyous Shout! in early-2014. DROM will present a concert series “Celebrating the Life & Music of Foreststorn ‘Chico’ Hamilton,” the next performance is on December 15th, 7:15 PM. Mr. Hamilton is survived by a brother, Don, a daughter, Denise, a nephew, Raoul, and great grandchildren.
