JUNG ON THE HUDSON
2018 Seminar Series | Rhinebeck, New York
JULY 13-14 Living the Imaginal Life: Pre-Seminar Intensive JULY 15–20 Looking Back, Looking Forward: Reviewing and Reorienting Our Lives JULY 20–21 In-Between Times: Something Gone, Something Not Yet
WHO LOOKS OUTSIDE, DREAMS; WHO LOOKS INSIDE, AWAKES. —CARL JUNG
WELCOME! Most of us are caught up with the challenges and demands of everyday life—whether psychological or concrete—and don’t make the time to explore what lies deep within us. Our Jung on the Hudson seminars provide an ideal setting to stretch ourselves psychologically, learn how to better balance spirit and matter, and mine the depths of our inner soul. When we can embrace the invisible, respect the power of our unconscious, and look beyond causality and effect, we are able to further our potential for individuation and growth. Our Jung on the Hudson seminars offer a unique opportunity for participants to meet and exchange ideas with others who come from diverse backgrounds yet have a common interest in exploring the psychology and ideas of C. G. Jung. Open to individuals from all fields as well as mental-health professionals, these programs are designed to meet the need of those interested in exploring the relevance of Jung’s ideas to their personal lives or professional activities. This coming summer, we are very proud to be celebrating our Silver Anniversary, the 25th annual Jung on the Hudson seminars. As always, this summer’s program is rich in content and features outstanding, internationally recognized analysts and authors. We invite you to join us in the scenic and historic Hudson Valley as we mark this important milestone with special celebrations and activities. — Aryeh Maidenbaum and Diana Rubin, Directors, New York Center for Jungian Studies

L
iving the imaginal life requires us to approach our life experiences, both inner and outer, not only with our rational mind but also with our imagination. In our culture, imagination is usually considered to be both
unreal and ego-created. However, in some older cultures and in other religious traditions, imagination is seen as a different way of perceiving and interacting with reality. This different way derives not from the ego but from a special place in our psyche of perception and creation. In these other cultures, imagination is often seen as a creative act parallel to the creation of the universe—in other words, perceiving through the imagination creates something new in the world. By consulting the view of imagination held by such poets as John Keats, Rainer Maria Rilke, and Dylan Thomas, by ancient alchemists, by Sufis, and by Jung, we can learn more of how imagination functions and how it can help us individuate and transform our consciousness. This intensive seminar meets for two full days. It is led by three outstanding Jungian analysts and authors who will present alchemical, poetic, mystical, and mythological content, as well as help us explore our own personal experiences of the imaginal life. We will invite group members to participate in exercises of the imagination that can open our perception to this creative and energizing dimension of our existence.

here do we go from here? What still needs to be done? What do we need to leave
behind, and what do we need to develop? What in our present life gratifies us, and what do we need to let go of? Which relationships need to be nurtured, and which have yet to be created? What haven’t we accomplished, and what unfulfilled dreams are yet to come? At this point in our life’s journey, what is meaningful, what goals might we still have, and what do we want our legacy to be? The ability to look back, learn from the past, self-reflect, and be honest with oneself is the key to moving forward, creating a healthier and more meaningful future, and continuing on one’s path toward individuation and growth. When major changes in our life—losing a loved one, a new job or partner, children growing up and leaving home, divorce, financial setback, illness, or retirement—disorient us, how do we utilize these opportunities for growth and change? And when new opportunities come knocking at our door, do we recognize them, and are we able to find the energy to guide us toward a new narrative filled with hope and potential? Every period of our life brings new challenges and new priorities. Setbacks as well as good fortune have the potential to enable us to move forward and make better choices. These better choices contain the possibility of embarking on a new, productive, and satisfying period—a time filled with finding meaning in our lives and learning to savor the joy of experiencing life itself. By looking back and looking forward, we can reorient our lives and find a new way to be in the world.

PRESENTATIONS & WORKSHOPS 6
JOE CAMBRAY PRESENTATION
The Secret Gifts of Embracing Uncertainty The discovery of the unconscious was a blow to waking consciousness. Yet once the shock of the realization of the power of this previously unknown realm was overcome, a dimension of the psyche was revealed that had the potential to bring us closer to the roots of creativity and healing. As our world incorporates an understanding of the “new sciences, our knowledge begins to have fuzzy margins with new theories introducing uncertainty into the fundamental structures of perceived reality. In his presentation, Dr. Cambray will shed light on the impact of including uncertainty in exploring the complexity of our worldview and learning how this can enhance our creativity and help in the healing process.
WORKSHOP
From Destruction and Trauma to Creative Renewal At some point, life exposes nearly all of us to a level of trauma. These traumas span a great range, from damage that leaves lifelong scars, to less severe moments of distress. This workshop will focus on transformative processes of renewal, when that is possible. Participants will have the opportunity to explore the creative potential in select aspects of their own histories. JOE CAMBRAY, PhD, is president/CEO and provost at Pacifica Graduate Institute. Past president of the International Association for Analytical Psychology, he was U.S. editor of The Journal of Analytical Psychology and a faculty member at Harvard Medical School, Department of Psychiatry. Currently living in Santa Barbara, California, Dr. Cambray is a Jungian analyst and former president of the Jung Institute of Boston. His numerous publications include Synchronicity: Nature and Psyche in an Interconnected Universe; a newly edited volume, with Leslie Sawin, Research in Analytical Psychology: Applications from Scientific, Historical, and Cross-Cultural Research; and Analytical Psychology: Contemporary Perspectives in Jungian Psychology, coedited with Linda Carter.
SYLVIA PERERA
DENNIS SLATTERY
PRESENTATION
PRESENTATION & WORKSHOP
Facing Forward: Birthing of New Lights Not only can we discover new meanings in old identities as we move toward death; we can also learn to use our passage to open further toward what beckons us and can become a spacious orientation beyond these old identities. From a personal perspective, Sylvia Perera will share her experiences as witness to such crossings to “the land of the summer stars” and explore aspects of the myths of several early cultures that honored this crossing. SYLVIA BRINTON PERERA, M.A., an internationally known Jungian analyst, lives, practices, writes, and teaches in New York and Vermont. On the faculty and, for many years, a board member of the Jung Institute of New York, she lectures and leads workshops internationally. Ms. Perera’s many publications include Descent to the Goddess: A Way of Initiation for Women; The Scapegoat Complex: Toward a Mythology of Shadow and Guilt; Dreams, A Portal to the Source; Celtic Queen Maeve and Addiction: An Archetypal Perspective; and The Irish Bull God: Image of Multiform and Integral Masculinity.
Bordering on Boldness: The Wisdom in Deep Creativity What do we know about our own creative processes, and what magnets draw us to create some things and not others? How do we deal with frustrations in the process of creating? What is transformed in us through the process and product of creativity? Both creativity and wisdom deepen who we are in ourselves and in our relation with others. Both are necessary in our journey of individuation—itself a constant process of reorientation and renewal. And, as we age, we come to understand that life may consist in balancing a trade-off between new limits imposed on us as well as greater agility and boldness in our creative life. Indeed, the range and depth of our creative risks may increase as we let go of abilities that we come to recognize as more limited in later life. Through a combination of presentation and workshop, Dr. Slattery will help us explore the vessel of creativity in each of us and the wisdom discovered in and elicited by creative acts. DENNIS PATRICK SLATTERY, PhD, is emeritus faculty in mythological studies at Pacifica Graduate Institute, where he taught for over 24 years. He is the author, coauthor, editor, or coeditor of 26 volumes, including six volumes of poetry, and has published more than 200 articles. Dr. Slattery’s recent titles include Our Daily Breach: Exploring Your Personal Myth through Herman Melville’s Moby-Dick and Bridge Work: Essays on Mythology, Literature and Psychology, and he is currently completing a book on Homer’s Odyssey. He leads writing retreats exploring one’s personal myth in the U.S., Canada, continental Europe, and Ireland.

ASHOK BEDI
MARGARET KLENCK
PRESENTATION & WORKSHOP
PRESENTATION & WORKSHOP
Are We Getting Wiser or Just Older?
Spontaneity: Creative Moment and Meeting Place between Past and Future
How do we age in a youth-oriented, materialistic, me-focused culture? In his presentation, Dr. Bedi will explore healthy aging from Jungian, spiritual, and neuroscientific perspectives as well as clarify the distinction between our chronological, subjective, and objective ages. Additionally, the unique contribution of the Eastern traditions—especially Hindu and Buddhist—to the spiritual dimension of aging and resilience will be discussed. Between the shores of illness and wellness lies the flow of the healing zone of resilience. Carl Jung calls this the “Psychoid” while neuroscientists call this our “Triune Brain”— a mysterious zone present in contemplative and meditative states. Additionally, in a workshop setting, Dr. Bedi will help us explore the neuroscientific and archetypal foundations of the meditative practices. ASHOK BEDI, M.D., Jungian psychoanalyst and board-certified psychiatrist, is a Distinguished Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association, clinical professor in psychiatry at the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee, a training analyst at the Jung Institute of Chicago, and in private practice in Milwaukee. Author of many books and articles, Dr. Bedi leads annual study groups to India. His publications include Awaken the Slumbering Goddess, Retire Your Family Karma, Path to the Soul, The Spiritual Paradox of Addiction, and Crossing the Healing Zone.
Creativity, sparked by spontaneous associations and images, brings together all of what one has lived up to that moment, and bridges into something new. In her presentation, Margaret Klenck will examine spontaneity as a clinical experience, an artistic experience, and, simply, a human experience. Following her presentation, in a smaller group setting, workshop participants will explore the power of spontaneously and accompanying emerging images, through play, storytelling, and art. In the words of Carl Jung, “Everything psychic is pregnant with the future.” MARGARET KLENCK, MDiv, LP, is a Jungian analyst in private practice in New York. A graduate of Union Theological Seminary, she is president of the Jungian Psychoanalytic Association in New York, where she teaches and supervises trainees. Ms. Klenck has lectured and taught nationally and internationally. Her most recent publications are two books in which she is a featured interviewee: Visible Mind: Movies, Modernity and the Unconscious, by Christopher Hauke; and There’s a Mystery There: The Primal Vision of Maurice Sendak, by Jonathan Cott. Before becoming an analyst, Ms. Klenck had a 20-year acting career, appearing on stage, television, and film.
The seminar was successful in balancing something so difficult in Jungian presentations—not too heady or intellectual. They were pragmatic and useful in a human way, while well-grounded in Jungian theory. —Linda S. 8

ANN ULANOV PRESENTATION
The Agony of Integration and the Blessings of Finitude
Looking back and reviewing our lives, we see the whole arc. Jung’s theory of individuation urges the task of integration with the promise that we become whole. But the agony of integration is hard work—seemingly going on until we die. Jung also stresses our precious ego life here and now, not to surrender it in reverence for the beyond-psyche. Jung writes, “What if beyond our everyday human world ... a door opens from a world beyond to carry us to a more than personal destiny?” Our reviewing gives us a new departure point—who, what, is this “other” looking at us, and how does that reorient the arc of our life?
A Meditation on Time
ANN BELFORD ULANOV, PhD, is a Jungian analyst in private practice in New York, the Christiane Brooks Johnson Professor Emerita of Union Theological Seminary, and author of numerous books and articles, including Spiritual Aspects of Clinical Work; Attacked by Poison Ivy; The Living God and Our Living Psyche; The Unshuttered Heart: Opening Aliveness/ Deadness in the Self; Madness and Creativity; and Knots and Their Untying: Essays on Psychological Dilemmas.
Movement and Momentum at the Threshold
PRESENTATION & PANEL DISCUSSION Time present and time past Are both perhaps present in time and future, And time future contained in time past. —T. S. Eliot We will begin with a presentation by Margaret Klenck. Join in a rich and textured conversation with our panelists Ashok Bedi, Joe Cambray, and Diana Rubin. Aryeh Maidenbaum will moderate.
OPTIONAL WORKSHOP This movement workshop will be led by Jeanne Bresciani, PhD, founder of the Isadora Duncan International Institute. Guided by intuition and instinct, participants will be invited to go beyond memories of the past and visions of the future to embody the present: On your mark, get set, go!

s individuals, we often find ourselves in in-between times, somewhere between a world
we knew and a world that has not yet emerged. These times are hours of crisis, disorientation, loss, and enormous anxiety. Similarly, cultures, eras, and civilizations go through in-between times. Ours is such a moment in history. How can we recover our bearings and sustain dignity and integrity when things fall apart? What abides amid such discontinuity? JAMES HOLLIS, PhD, is a Zurich-trained Jungian analyst with a practice in Washington, DC, where he is also executive director of the Jung Society of Washington. He is the author of 14 books (with another forthcoming in 2018) that have been translated into 18 languages. An internationally acclaimed analyst, Dr. Hollis is former executive director of the Jung Educational Center of Houston and professor of Jungian studies at Saybrook University. He is vice president emeritus of the Philemon Foundation, and his books include The Eden Project: In Search of the Magical Other; Finding Meaning in the Second Half of Life; Living a More Considered Life; The Middle Passage; Hauntings: Dispelling the Ghosts Who Run Our Lives; and Mythologems, What Matters Most.
