Both students, TrudyAnn Gabbidon, 16, of Boys’ & Girls’ High School and Sherqueena Lee, 13, who will start High School at Transit Tech this Fall, have deep roots in the Caribbean. Their parents are Jamaican. Lee is the daughter of Rev. Terry Lee of the By-Ways & Hedges Ministry, located at the busy intersection of Church & Utica Avenues. As student leaders who will be returning to school, they are spending part of their summer recess as volunteers at the campaign headquarters, because in the words of TrudyAnn, “Dr. McKenzie is dedicated to what he is doing and has compassion for everyday people like myself”. TrudyAnn says she plans to study medicine. McKenzie, who is vying for the New York City Council seat for the 45th District, is one of six candidates contesting the September 15, Primary on the Democratic Party ticket.

Councilmember Stewart Secures $5Million For Immigrants In NYC BROOKLYN, NY - Councilman Stewart has been a strong and uncompromising voice for the rights of all immigrants in New York City. He has also been a reliable partner with the labor movement pushing for justice and equality for all workers. Councilman Stewart has held a number of free immigration programs that have attracted hundreds of participants. His district office conducts successful job fairs and has designated Fridays as "Immigration Day" at the office. He has managed to secure $5 million for fiscal year 2009 for immigration to assist immigrants in

changing their status by providing free classes for English As A Second Language and legal assistance. While immigration is a federal matter, Councilman Stewart is convinced that we are better able to manage these issues raised by the presence of new and future Americans by establishing a mechanism that facilitates their inclusion in our own institutions and government. Bishop Blair Re-Appointed Political Ombudsman KINGSTON, Jamaica – Bishop Herro Blair Tuesday took the oath of office as Political Ombudsman for another fiveyear term. Governor-General, Sir Patrick Allen congratulated Bishop Blair on his re-appointment and for the contribution he has made over the years during a brief ceremony held at King’s House. “We are pleased that your performance was so outstanding,” the Governor-General said as he encouraged Bishop Blair to conduct all investigations into complaints relating to party political issues and perform all other functions set out by the Act. The Head of State also implored all Jamaicans to “aid and assist” with the investigations of the Ombudsman, which would ultimately benefit the country. In his response, Bishop Blair said that he was “humbled and honoured” to be re-appointed for another term. “I pledge and promise that for the next five years, I will continue to give human service and I will continue to stand up for Jamaica. I will, by the help of God, use this office to help Jamaica to get a ‘fresh start’ with the help of our political leaders and our politicians,” he said. The role of the Political Ombudsman is to conduct investigations into complaints relating to party political issues and to perform other functions in accordance with the provisions of the Act. The Office of Political Ombudsman was established in 2002.

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados - The Barbados government says it does not intend to abandon plans to introduce a comprehensive immigration strategy on the heels of a public option survey that shows widespread support for its recent stance on the matter. “We have embarked upon the development of a comprehensive immigration policy which will be introduced shortly. There will be no turning back on this issue,” Prime Minister David Thompson told delegates attending the annual Democratic Labour Party (DLP) conference on Sunday. Thompson’s comments came a day after the latest public opinion poll said 70 per cent of Barbadians supported his recent stance on immigration, with more than half of those surveyed also giving the nod of approval to the government’s decision to offer a six-month amnesty for Caribbean Community (CARICOM) nationals living here illegally to regularise their status or face deportation. “I am not surprised that Barbadians overwhelmingly support the government’s stance…those who prefer to wear blinkers confined their view and perspective of this matter to the issue of our embracing free movement of CARICOM nationals. “There is much more than our embrace of the principle of an integrated Caribbean and I am inspired by the fact that close to 70 per cent of Barbadians understands this,” the Prime Minister said. The poll, conducted by Caribbean Development Research Services (CADRES) and commissioned by the DLP, found that

Regarding the amnesty, which expires at the end of November, 53 per cent of persons were in support compared to 30 per cent who said they did not approve of the measure. “I have said repeatedly that we have to set and maintain standards in relation to the quality of life that we wish for ourselves and for all persons calling Barbados home,” Thompson said. “I want to say here and now that as Prime Minister of this country I have had as much as I am willing to take as far as the unfair and unwarranted maligning of Barbados and Barbadians by those whom we have extended a welcoming hand is concerned…I am saying today ‘enough is enough’,” he

added. The immigration issue was a major agenda item at last month’s CARICOM summit within the context of the CARICOM Single Market and Economy (CSME) that allows for the free movement of labour, goods, and skills across the region. At their end of their summit, the regional leaders said that “the schedule of free movement of persons within the Single Market would be reviewed at the CSME Convocation to be convened in October, with a view to advising on the timetable for full free movement”. They also agreed on the importance of training and sensitising Immigration Officers on the implementation of the region’s approach to free movement and hassle free travel.

Guyanese Soldiers Appear In Court To Face Murder Charge GEORGETOWN, Guyana - Three Guyana Defence Force Coast members were on Monday charged with murdering a 24year-old gold dealer whom they abducted, robbed and then dumped the body in the vast Essequibo River last week. The three - Sherwin Hart, 26, Delon Gordon 22, and Deon Grenidge 20 - appeared before Magistrate Judy Latchman and were not required to plead to the indictable charge. They will re-appear in court on September 24. Three other persons who had allegedly collected the majority of the GUY$17 million (US$ 85,000 ) stolen from the gold dealer, Dweive Kant Ramdass, were also charged with accessory to the crime. They were remanded to prison. Yvonne Beckles, 22, Shawn Ajeda, 22 and Vanla Adolphus 32 were charged with being accessories to the crime. Adolphus is Gordon’s sister. The prosecution allege that on August 20 Beckles assisted, comforted and maintained Grenidge knowing that he murdered Ramdass. Adolphus faces the same charge. Ramdass’s decomposed body was found on Saturday and was buried on Monday after a post mortem revealed he died due to drowning.

Police secure the area after the van with the accused arrived at the Vreed-en-Hoop Magistrate’s Court. Meanwhile, both President Bharrat Jagdeo and The Guyana Defence Force (GDF) have condemned the actions of the three soldiers. The GDF said in a statement that the actions of the soldiers no way represented the “ethos and character of the GDF”. “The GDF wishes to assure citizens, the fishing community, fishermen, small boat and other vessel operators that the Defence Force subscribes to the highest of professional standards and will continue to discharge its mandate notwithstanding this unsavoury incident,” it said.

Ambassador ‘Optimistic’ On Arrival In Haiti PORT AU PRINCE, Haiti - Newlyappointed United States Ambassador Kenneth Merten has started his tour of duty here promising that the Barrack Obama administration will base its relationship with this Caribbean country on respect, partnership and responsibility. “This means the United States should always fulfil commitments we have made to Haiti. It also means the Haitian government must do all it can to meet its own goals of development and good governance,” said Merten, who presented his credentials to President Rene Preval on Monday. “I know that these are still difficult times and Haiti has many, many needs. I have no illusions. Yet I also feel optimistic, because Haiti now has many of the elements to move into a more peaceful, democratic and prosperous future.” Haiti, one of the poorest countries in the western hemisphere, has been wracked by years of political upheaval, violence, hunger and natural disasters. But the diplomat, a native of St. Louis, Missouri, who has served two previous assignments in Haiti during a 22-year Foreign Service career, said he was optimistic about the country’s future and that he was looking forward to work as a friend and a partner of Haiti.

Texas Judge Denies Request To Force Feed Trini Immigrant TEXAS - A United States federal judge has denied a request to force feed an illegal Trinidadian immigrant, who is on a hunger strike at a detention centre here. US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials had requested a temporary restraining order to force feed Devenish Sorzano, who is detained at the Port Isabel Detention Center in Brownsville. US District Court judge Andrew Hanen denied the request but authorised doctors

to “use the least amount of force to monitor his vital signs”. “The United States has not shown that irreparable injury will result absent entry of a temporary restraining order,” the judge said. Court documents indicated that Sarzano went on hunger strike on August 13, a day after he was denied an immigration bond. He has refused “to eat, drink water or let medical staff at the facility monitor his vital signs or take blood samples,” according to the court documents. ICE officials said Sorzano “appeared drowsy, dehydrated and was using slurred speech” and was “laying on the bed in foe-

tal position and refuses to uncover his head to speak to medical staff”. “The safety, security and health of detainees in ICE custody is [are] a top priority,” ICE said in a separate statement, noting that Sarzano has promised to continue his action until he is “free.” Sorzano’s temporary restraining order case is scheduled for September 1, and his immigration hearing is set for September 9. ICE said the Trinidadian overstayed his tourist visa after arriving in the United States in 1990, and that authorities in Arundel County, Maryland, learned about his immigration status on his arrest for domestic violence.

Public Workers Get Long Over Due Payment KINGSTON, Jamaica - The Jamaica government says it will begin paying long over due increases in allowances to public servants in September. Minister of State in the Ministry of Finance and the Public Service, Arthur Williams, who is conducting discussions with various public sector groups on salary issues, said the payment will be for benefits such as taxi and meal allowances, which should have been increased in April 2008. Williams, who met with representatives of the Jamaica Confederation of Trade Unions (JCTU) on Tuesday, said the new rates will be paid to all public sector groups which have signed the third Public Sector Memorandum of Understanding (MOU3). “The MOU contemplated increased benefits from April 1, 2008 (and) those groups that had signed heads of agreement will have those new rates (come into effect) in September,” said Williams,

who is also scheduled to hold talks with representatives of the Jamaica Teachers Association on Wednesday. A meeting with representatives of the Police Federation on Tuesday, to discuss ways to “soften” the impact of the public sector wage freeze, failed to bring about any progress. The Ministry of Finance and Public Service said this was due to the Federation’s insistence that the government settle the issue of the pay increase due this year, before they make any other proposal. “Senator Williams strongly maintained the government’s position of a wage freeze and reiterated to the Federation that the country cannot afford any increase in payments to public sector workers,” the Ministry said in a statement afterwards. Earlier this week, the Union of Schools, Agricultural and Allied said it would be issuing a 10-day ultimatum to the Ministry to Finance to honour its commitments under MOU3 after expressing disappointment that the Bruce Golding government had not paid the fringe benefits to workers due under the agreement.

‘Come Back Home’ St. Lucia Tourist Board Unveils New Plan CASTRIES, St. Lucia - The Caribbean island of St. Lucia has developed a new plan to woo members of the Caribbean expatriate community to its shores. Louis Lewis, St. Lucia’s Director of Tourism, announced this week that the St. Lucia Tourist Board has embarked on a public relations strategy to encourage the North American Diaspora to “come back home” on vacation and to take advantage of some of the exciting investment opportunities on the island. “Paying lip service to the Diaspora is no longer an option for us and we want to start first by working closely with nationals in North America to help boost visitor arrivals and socio-economic development on our island,” said Lewis, disclosing that the plan calls for close cooperation with the local private sector to work with this vibrant market segment. “We have seen strong support for our product from Caribbean nationals across the United States, Canada and Europe, and expect even greater visitors to our shores with increased air seats to St. Lucia over the next few months,” said Lewis, citing the start of JetBlue’s thrice weekly non-stop flights from New York this Fall as well as the resumption of WestJet service from Toronto. Part and parcel of St. Lucia’s marketing

strategy, the director revealed, was also targeting first, second and third generation West Indians abroad. “Some of our relatives have never explored their heritage in the Caribbean, having been raised by Caribbean parents or grandparents in Miami, New York and Texas ... so we want to let them know that they have a home here in St. Lucia or nearby in the Caribbean region,” he said. The St. Lucia Tourist Board reports that complementing the Diaspora charge will be new and innovative approaches to its overall North American public relations strategy. “We have some very exciting plans in the works to gain greater consumer mindshare,” said Lewis, who is quietly optimistic about the recovery of the sector in the months ahead. He said that with athletes from Trinidad & Tobago, Barbados, Bahamas, Puerto Rico, Panama and Cuba, among others, all sharing some of the spotlight at the championships, there was no denying the success of the region in Berlin. Carnival association president, Yolanda Lezama-Clark, said that while the association fulfills its mission of celebrating Caribbean heritage and culture on the world stage, spotlighting social and economic issues was also extremely important. “This year we have chosen cancer awareness and Census 2010,” she said, announcing “Jump for the Cure, Jump Up and Be Counted!” as the theme of this year’s carnival. To this end, the association is partnering with the American Cancer Society in a social awareness campaign to get people tested, while the alliance with the US Census Bureau will spread the message of the importance of being counted in the upcoming 2010 Census. “This is a particularly important issue for Caribbean people who have traditionally been undercounted. But more so, being counted is about our economic power. (It is) important in order to ensure increasing community resources in the areas of housing, (healthcare), and education,” she said.

Six Caribbean personalities were honored at the Mayor’s reception, including five Trinidadians: mas designer Clyde Bascombe, community leader Gemma Bidjou, steelband founder Cyrus Busby, costume maker and educator Monica Carrington, and one of the earliest supporters of the carnival Horace Morancie.

Usain Bolt: The Greatest Sprinter Of All Times? Usain Bolt is only 22 years old and is already being labelled track and field’s greatest sprinter of all time. The Jamaican grabbed world acclaim with an awesome triple gold medal show – the 100 meters, 200 and sprint relay, all in world record times — at the Beijing Olympics in the summer of 2008 and a year later, he has achieved another phenomenal mark. On August 16, 2009, the first anniversary of his stunning Beijing 100-meter triumph, Bolt raised the bar even further with an astounding 9.58 second world record at the 12th IAAF World Championship at the famous Berlin Olympic Stadium. Prior to his sensational 9.69 world record victory at the Beijing Olympics, many of the sport’s experts had debated whether it was humanly possible to run faster than 9.70 seconds over 100 meters. Bolt’s answer in Beijing was emphatic and his stunner in Berlin put a colossal exclamation mark on his unparalleled status in world track and field. Born on August 21, 1986, in Sherwood Content, a small town in the northern Jamaican parish of Trelawny, Usain St. Leo Bolt had shown from his teenage years that he was destined for the pinnacle of the sport. As a 15-year-old racing against older athletes, Bolt won gold in the 200 meters at the 2002 IAAF World Junior Championship, a global meet for athletes under 20 years-old. The IAAF, the world governing body for the sport, gave Bolt its “Rising Star Award for 2002” and the following year, he won 200-meter gold at the IAAF World Youth (Under-18) Championship in a meet record 20.40 seconds. Bolt became the first junior athlete ever to run sub 20 seconds for 200 meters when he clocked 19.93 seconds as a 17year-old at the 2004 CARIFTA Games in Bermuda. He turned his back on a barrage of scholarship offers from US Colleges in 2004 and decided to turn pro from a training base in Kingston, Jamaica. Injuries stalled his career in his early years as a pro but in 2007 he would claim his first medal at major senior meet when took silver in the 200 meters behind American Tyson Gay at the World Championship in Osaka,

A decision to tackle the 100 meters in the 2008 Olympic year proved to be a pivotal turning point in his career and his tremendous success in the shorter sprint provided the platform for his rapid rise to becoming the undisputed king of sprinting. He smashed compatriot Asafa Powell’s 100-meter world record with a 9.72 victory at the Reebok Grand Prix in New York on May 31, 2008, and his effortless world record 9.69 in Beijing, arms wide open celebrating more than 15 meters before reaching the finish, was a glaring indication that this athlete was not normal. In the following days in Beijing, Bolt would shatter the vaunted Michael Johnson 200meter mark of 19.32 by winning in 19.30 before propelling Jamaica to the sprint relay gold in a world record 37.10 seconds. It was the first time in Olympic history that an athlete was winning the 100 and 200-meter double plus the 4x100-meter relay gold medals with world record performances at the same Games. His supremely confident but affable personality, coupled with his spontaneous outbreak of Jamaican dance moves as he celebrated his triumphs at the Beijing Olympics, endeared him to fans worldwide. He was the unquestionable star and most sought after athlete of the Beijing Olympics. Bolt captured the prestigious Laureus Sportsman of the Year Award for 2008, crowning a year in which he was also took the IAAF Male Athlete of the Year award, and claimed several other international honors including the BBC Overseas Sports Personality of the Year, the Champion of Champions 2008 Award for the French magazine L’Equipe, and the Eurosport Sports Personality of the Year honor.

New Yorkers Praise Bolt’s Exploits At World Championships NEW YORK, NY – Jamaicans in the United States have hailed the success of Caribbean athletes, particularly their compatriots, at the recently concluded World Championship in Berlin. “It’s delightful,” exclaimed Irvin Claire, CEO of Team Jamaica Bickle, an organization that provides meals to Jamaican athletes who participate in athletic events in the United States, particularly the Penn Relays in Pennsylvania. “It’s confirmation that victory at Beijing (Olympics) last year was not a flash in the pan,” added Claire, who is also co-director of the Queens, New York-based Caribbean Immigrant Services (CIS), an immigrant advocacy group. “Jamaica not only set the pace, but it also provided the platform for the performance of other Caribbean athletes,” he said. Emmanuel Decambre, who was

a 400-meter reservist for Jamaica at the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow, said Jamaican athletes surpassed his expectations. “It’s unbelievable,” said Decambre, who lives in New Jersey but is a social worker in New York City. “It’s a long time coming (Jamaica’s athletic prowess). It’s exhilarating where they are now. “The Caribbean has come a long way, too. Jamaica might have paved the way. It’s gratifying.” Jamaica completed the World Championship on Sunday second to the United States, with seven gold, four silver and two bronze medals, for 13 medals overall, two more than at last year’s Beijing Olympics. The United States finished with 10 gold, six silver and six bronze, accounting for 22 points altogether. Barbados took one gold through Ryan Brathwaite in the 110 metres hurdles while Trinidad and Tobago grabbed a silver and two bronze medals. The Bahamas took home one silver and a bronze. “I credit the entire Caribbean athletes for making us proud,” said Una Clarke, a Jamaica-born, former New York City Councilwoman,

adding in jest: “I encourage Caribbean athletes to make yellow yam part of their diet.” Though the Jamaican athletes performed exceptionally well overall, sprint sensation Usain Bolt stood out with world-breaking performances in the 100 metres, 200 metres and 4x100 metres relay. He clocked 9.58 seconds to win the 100 metres before returning to run an astonishing 19.19 seconds to also capture the 200 metres. “I want to join my fellow ‘yardies’ (Jamaicans) across the city in offering congratulations to Usain Bolt on his tremendous accomplishments this (last) week,” said Leroy Comrie, a JamaicanAmerican, who is deputy majority leader of New York City Council. “Having set new world standards in the 100 metres and 200 metres, Usain has unequivocally raised the bar for sports achievements and is truly the world’s fastest man,” added the Queens Councilman. “This is a proud moment not only for the nation of Jamaica but all the nationals living abroad including those of us of Jamaican ancestry living in New York City.”

Five-time Cup champions St. Vincent and the Grenadines beat Antigua and Barbuda 1-0 while Grenada upset last season’s runners-up St. Kitts and Nevis by a similar margin before 1,500 boisterous fans at the Jefferson High School stadium. All-Time Best 13 Medals For Jamaica In Berlin BERLIN, Germany – Jamaica completed their awesome all-time best World Championship showing by grabbing an impressive silver behind winners USA in the women’s 4X400-meter relay Sunday at the Berlin Olympic Stadium. It was the 13th medal for the Jamaicans and a solid end to the 12th IAAF World Championship for the Caribbean side that – led by the astounding Usain Bolt — captured the hearts of fans here. The USA, with Jamaica-born athletes Sanya Richards and Debbie Dunn in their quartet, clocked a world-leading three minutes, 17.83 seconds to win gold. Jamaica’s time for silver was a season’s best 3:21.15 with their team of Rosemarie Whyte, Novlene Williams-Mills, Shereefa Lloyd, and Shericka Williams. “To win Jamaica’s last medal in the championship is really great,” Williams said. “Jamaica has been doing spectacular from last season and this season and I hope we continue for the future,” she added. Williams, the 400-meter silver medallist, ran a fabulous last leg to secure Jamaica’s

runner-up finish. She blazed past 400-meter bronze medallist Antonina Krivoshapka during the final leg and the Russian was unable to respond. “I just tried to go out there and execute my race properly to make sure that we secured a medal going home,” Williams said. Russia clocked 3.21.64 in third a long way behind Richards on anchor for the USA. “My teammates were phenomenal … and made it very easy for me tonight,” Richards said. “Our competition was great from Jamaica and Russia so we wanted to come out and run our best races and we did that and won the gold medal, we are very thrilled,” Richards added. The USA picked up other gold medals through their men’s 1600-meter relay and the women’s long jump with Brittney Reese to

Also on the last day, the 20-year-old Anguillian Shara Proctor posted a national record 6.71 meters to place sixth in the women’s long jump. Proctor, the first Anguillian ever to reach an IAAF World Championship final, bettered her previous national mark of 6.61 meters as Reese copped gold with a world-leading 7.10 meters. Proctor, also the Central American and Caribbean (CAC) champion, had Brazilian Olympic champion Maurren Higa Maggi behind her. Maggi was never a factor and was seventh at 6.68 meters. The American men were hardly threatened as they sped to gold in their 1600-meter relay in a world-leading 2:57.86, defeating Britain (3:00.53) and Australia (3:00.90).
