JAZZ AT NYOS Formed in 1992 to meet the growing demand for high quality training for young jazz musicians in Scotland, The National Youth Orchestras of Scotland’s Jazz education programme has established itself as one of Britain’s foremost jazz development pathways for young musicians.
NYJOS 21st Annivesary at Dundas Castle with Liane Carroll - July 2013
Our Vision • To develop a new generation of jazz musicians, open to all styles and eager to spread the word of jazz • To create a clear journey of musical development with various entry and exit points • To nurture talent by offering opportunities to study and perform jazz at the highest possible level, with respected professional musicians from the UK and beyond • To enhance the performing experience with other young musicians of advanced proficiency • To continually improve the level of playing and improvising in all ensembles and to push the boundaries of musical experience
Artistic Direction The Jazz programme has progressed in recent years thanks to the strategic management and development by Artistic Directors, Malcolm Edmonstone and Andrew Bain. Both are enthusiastic and renowned jazz musicians and educators, experienced in the delivery of high quality jazz music education. Their flexible and innovative approach has brought a fresh and vibrant feel to the scope and content of NYOS Jazz projects which are designed not only to nurture excellence but to introduce younger students to jazz as a music genre, building interest and participation from which to develop talent in future years.

Artistic Directors Malcolm Edmonstone is amongst the most versatile and in-demand jazz musicians in the country. He is a senior professor at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and co-artistic Director of Jazz for NYOS. His breadth of experience in the fields of jazz education, performance and writing are unrivalled. Early in his professional life Malcolm was called on by Laurie Holloway to cover the piano chair on an international tour with his wife, the late Marion Montgomery. Since then Malcolm has continued to work with Laurie on various projects, including Strictly Come Dancing, when his arrangements were broadcast live to audiences of 10 million. Malcolm has a long lasting association with the Dankworth family, having been appointed Jacqui’s musical director some ten years ago. Throughout that time he has worked extensively as arranger and pianist for numerous tours and recording projects, the most recent of which is the album It Happens Quietly, a collaboration between Jacqui and her late father, the great Sir John Dankworth. Other albums include Back to You and Detour Ahead. He is a member of Mike Walker’s Madhouse band and has been invited to play with legendary jazz musicians Peter Erskine and Dave Liebman. Recent accomplishments include a complete transcription and performance of Donald Fagen’s album The Nightfly (‘a complete triumph….already in contention for a place in my gigs of the year’ – London Jazz), an orchestral commission for the Southbank Sinfonia and an ongoing series of progressive and innovative improvisation-based repertoire for the jazz ensembles of NYOS. His first book, Contemporary Harmonic Technique for the Improviser, is due for publication later this year.
Andrew Bain is one of the leading performers and educators in the UK. A graduate of the Guildhall School of Music & Drama and Winner of the BBC Big Band Drummer, he has performed with Wynton Marsalis, Kenny Wheeler, Randy Brecker, Dave Liebman, Bob Mintzer, John Taylor, Iain Dixon, Mike Walker, Jason Rebello, Mike Janisch, Paul Booth, Phil Robson, Jim Hart, Mark Lockheart, Chris Batchelor, Mark Hodgson, Jean Toussaint, Houston Pearson, John Parricelli, Steve Watts, Stan Sulzmann, and was a member of Jacqui Dankworth’s band between 2007-8, recording with the late Sir John Dankworth in 2008. He has performed at many prestigious venues in the UK, Europe and the US, including the BBC Proms and the Montreux Jazz Festival. Receiving his Masters from the Manhattan School of Music, he was resident in New York from 200107. During this time he performed extensively with Thelonious Monk Competition winner Jon Irabagon and singer Jason Liebman. He has performed at many of New York’s famous clubs including Sin-E, CBGBs, Tonic and the Mercury Lounge, and recorded at Sony Studios. Andrew co-leads the NY-based group Confluence whose eponymous debut showcased original and highly inventive compositions. Their second record will be released on the record label Fresh Sound, New Talent later this year. Andrew is a faculty member at the Guildhall School of Music and the Birmingham Conservatoire. He is also a member of the National Youth Jazz Collective with Artistic Director Dave Holland and is coArtistic Director of Jazz for the National Youth Orchestras of Scotland.

Since 1979, the National Youth Orchestras of Scotland has been providing young musicians in Scotland with unforgettable training and performing experiences. Much has changed since then but, today, NYOS now has more opportunities than ever before for keen young musicians. In 1992, jazz education was first introduced in the ensemble development. This has gone from strength to strength over the last 21 years and there is now a clear pathway for budding young jazz musicians, from early beginnings through to the profession.
“Spines were tingling and the audience was in raptures as ensemble pieces, sublime solos and frankly very groovy jazz of unbelievable quality was laid in front of us. Shetland Times 2012 Are you a keen young musician who wants to improve your ensemble and improvisation skills? Do you have an enthusiasm for jazz and want to meet like-minded people with a passion for great music? Do you want to perform in jazz ensembles at the highest national level? Are you aged between 12 and 21 and have links to Scotland? If so, we want to hear from you! If you are in any doubt about whether to apply, just give Jazz Ensembles Manager, Corinna Gregory a call on 0141-332 8311

SUMMER SCHOOL JULY 12-16 | Sabhal Mor Ostaig | Skye The focus for the year is the NYJOS Summer School which provides excellent jazz tuition for students of all abilities with an enthusiasm for jazz. Students are grouped in combos with others of a similar experience and standard, to enable their education to be tailored to suit their level. Through a carefully thought out and structured timetable of instrumental, combo, listening and skills sessions, as well as a nightly jazz club, the students have the chance to develop their musical proficiency, including instrumental and improvisation techniques, performance/audience awareness, transcription, learning new repertoire and creating new music. The 2014 Jazz Summer School will take place at Sabhal Mor Ostaig, southern Skye, which boasts excellent indoor and outdoor facilities and is at the heart of a supportive and culturally diverse community. A truly inspiring location for a truly inspiring course. This year we will create a jazz vocal ensemble for the growing demand of talented vocalists in Scotland. This ensemble will be coached by a professional jazz singer and contain a rhythm section. In addition to the regular course content, this ensemble will benefit from singer-specific improvisation and communication classes plus all the performance opportunities of the Summer School.
Jazz Tutors and Ambassadors
The tutors on the Summer School come from across the UK and USA, and represent a wealth of styles and experience as professional musicians and educators. Not only will you have the chance to work closely with them during combo and instrumental sessions, there will also be many opportunities to hear them perform. The Jazz Ambassadors are young musicians on the cusp of their career as jazz musicians. They have come through the ranks of NYJOS themselves and are all at, or have recently graduated from music college. They play an integral part in the teaching during the Summer School and are excellent role models for the younger students, bridging the gap between students and tutors. They are each paired with a tutor for the duration of the Summer School and support them in instrumental classes, combo sessions and the evening jazz clubs.

CALLING ALL SINGERS IN 2014 FOR THE YEAR OF THE VOCALIST!
MARCH 14-16 | Aberdeen Jazz Festival JULY 12-16 | Sabhal Mor Ostaig | Skye NYJOS Access is a training ground for the next generation of top jazz musicians, giving students the opportunity to refine their improvisation and key solo and ensemble skills, as a step along the pathway to participation in the flagship NYJOS ensemble. Aspiring students will be identified by the NYJOS Artistic Directors during the audition workshops in December, and will then be invited to take part in 2 residential courses; a long weekend in March and the Summer School in July. These courses provide an opportunity for students to build upon their learning throughout the year, offering opportunities to work in small and large groups and both involve preparation for public performances. Repertoire includes traditional big band standards through to challenging modern repertoire; through this the students also learn key jazz history. NYJOS Access is delighted to have been invited back to take part in the 2014 Aberdeen Jazz Festival, which will include 2 billed performances there as well as attending a masterclass by a visiting performer and the chance to go to other gigs at the festival. During the past 2 years’ courses, NYJOS Access has focused on the music of 2 key jazz albums, Dave Brubeck’s Time Out and Miles Davis’ Kind of Blue. “1959 was a very special year for jazz. Last year, NYJOS Access performed the music from one of the great records of that year - Miles Davis’ ‘Kind of Blue’ - and in March 2013, they took on the challenge of performing Dave Brubeck’s ‘Time Out.’ A subtle blend of ‘Cool’ and ‘West Coast Jazz’, this exploration into time signatures featured some of the best young jazz musicians in Scotland. Andrew Bain What will be the next challenge and focus for 2014…?

JULY 12-16 | Sabhal Mor Ostaig | Skye JULY 16-19 | Summer Tour | UK The flagship NYJOS ensemble represents the wealth of innovation and skill that Scotland’s talented young jazz musicians possess. Each year, the ensemble will either be joined by a carefully chosen soloist who works with the band and Directors throughout the rehearsals, OR will focus on a particular style of music. Many NYJOS alumni have gone on to achieve professional status as jazz musicians and all previous winners of the Young Scottish Jazz Musician of the Year have been members of NYJOS. NYJOS has made professional live-gig and studio recordings and has performed in many venues and festivals throughout the UK, and are reugular performers at the London, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Aberdeen and Shetland Jazz Festivals. During the annual Summer School, the ensemble meets for an intensive rehearsal residency in preparation for its tour to venues across the UK, which follows immediately after the Summer School. A second residential course, with high profile performances is planned for later in the year, subject to confirmation. There will be a fee for this course. Throughout its history NYJOS has collaborated with many important figures from the jazz world, either working with them as soloists or commissioning them to produce works for the band. We pick soloists with an individual voices or sound who are also highly experienced in youth education and composition. By doing this we have established a unique group of musicians who return to work with us time and again. These include Jacqui Dankworth, Mark Lockheart, Mike Walker, Iain Dixon, Chris Batchelor, Rick Taylor and, most recently, Liane Carroll. By offering the opportunity to work intensively with these musicians, as well as the Directors, Malcolm Edmonstone and Andrew Bain, students are given a professional-level experience during NYJOS courses and tours. Many go on to music colleges across the UK and beyond, such is the level of their attainment. 12
