With Carmen, the French tradition of opéra comique – not necessarily comedy, as Bizet’s masterpiece demonstrates – reached its peak. Bizet took most of his short life to find a story (by Prosper Mérimée) that fully suited his lyrical and dramatic genius. Within a few weeks of its no more than modestly successful Parisian premiere, he was dead. Usually it is said that it was his disappointment over Carmen that killed him, while still in his thirties. Yet this cannot have been utterly true, for on the night of his death the opera was receiving its 23rd performance – not a bad innings for a new and challenging work – and was at the start of its road to becoming one of the greatest of all international operatic hits, a position it has held to this day. Today’s performance features two of the work’s most famous attractions – Carmen’s Habanera and the Toréador Song, which are included in the BBC’s Ten Pieces Secondary. The Habanera, from Act One, is the vocalised Spanish dance the French composer wrote to characterise Carmen’s special allure. The Toréador Song, written to portray the arrival of the captivating bullfighter Escamillo, fits its singer like a glove but can make its effect, as NYOS Junior Orchestra will surely prove, without a singer at all.
