Get to Know Catherine

I hate pigeons. I will cross the street if I see one. Their eyes are SO scary.

I love school so much. While acting is my top priority, school is right there with it. I would love to go to college at USC in Los Angeles, and dual major in film and business.

I am definitely a girly girl. Fashion, makeup, and hanging with my friends are some of my favorite things to do. Makeup is one of my favorite things to experiment with. I also love expressing myself with fashion! Red and navy blue are my favorite colors to wear.

I am fully obsessed with bikinis. Whenever I get the chance to wear one, I will. I live on the Jersey Shore, so the beach, me, and a bikini is my favorite trio.

Whenever I get my nails done, I only get French tips.

Catherine Bradley Interview by Carol Wright | Photographer: Emily Assiran | Hair: Marco Santini | MUA: Jessi Butterfield | Stylist: Madison Guest

Actress Catherine Bradley who can be seen in the hit-show The Really Loud House, talked to NYOTA about poets that inspire her, the work Rebel Girls does, and the SAG-AFTRA strike.

Can you tell our readers a bit about Rebel Girls and the work the organization does? Rebel Girls is a girl empowerment brand that focuses on creating girl driven media especially for younger girls! My sisters and I grew up with this brand in our early childhood years. Rebel Girls has published so many incredible books and it is important for girls to see real life role models who inspire them to reach for their dreams and dream even bigger than maybe they even imagined! Rebel Girls has released a collection of essays, stories, and advice called Dear Rebel. How did you get involved with Rebel Girls and what led to you contributing to the book? Well, my mom, Sarah, who is one of the authors of this poem we wrote, and her mother (my grandmother) are the ultimate rebel girls. My grandmother was a trailblazer starting a newspaper from nothing as a single mom with two little girls. My mom was so inspired by her mother that she too has achieved what many consider the impossible. Both of them each holiday would buy my sisters and I the latest books from the collection! Since I can remember, my mom has always told us that any dream is possible with hard work, optimism, and belief in yourself! But she has also equally shared that with leadership comes responsibility to fight for those who have lost their voices!

Is your poem that’s included in the book a piece you had previously written or did you write it specifically for the book? Yes, my two sisters, Alex and Aubin, my mom and I wrote this poem, “A Mother’s Ode to Three Beautiful Sisters” specifically for Rebel Girls. The backdrop to this piece was bedtime with our mom where she would bring all of our stuffed animals (fluffy foxes, silly ostriches, English queens, t-rexes, golden fairies, determined rhinos and dozens more) to life taking us to enchanted worlds where anything was possible each night. These bedtime stories and the magic of our mom, our magic maker, and her fierce love for all of us and our love for each other is the inspiration for this poem. It celebrates our differences but also how we all share a common bond of love and sisterhood.

Who are some poets and writers that inspire you? Maya Angelou…she was a dancer, singer, activist, writer, and an amazing poet. Her poems, “Phenomenal Woman” and “Still I Rise” speak to the inner strength and character of women and are so beautiful. Her message of telling women it is okay to be confident, it is okay to speak up, it is okay to be you in all your glory is timeless. She was another ultimate rebel girl! Another writer that really inspired me at a young age was Anne Frank, the rebel girl. After reading her diary, I was so moved by her courage and ability to stay optimistic during the most horrendous times. It was after reading this diary that I wrote my first poem, “She Once Was a Normal Girl,” as a tribute to her and all the children who lost their childhood and lives. Like Maya, Anne Frank took pen to paper to express her pain and joy. I find writing poems almost like therapy, a way to express your feelings.

The SAG-AFTRA strike is still ongoing. As an actor are you hoping to find more projects to do similar to Dear Rebel, as actors continue to fight for a fair deal? I am so passionate about working with young kids and bringing positivity into this world. I would love nothing more to continue working with Dear Rebel and young children. That being said, I am hoping we can come to a fair deal soon so everyone can get back to work doing what we all love. I love telling stories and performing. It is a huge part of who I am; but I have taken this opportunity to perform in the high school play this semester, which is something I never get to do! It has been so fun and truly special just being part of my high school theatre community for the first time ever.

Dear Rebel is bringing women together across industries and ages. What do you hope readers takeaway after reading? I hope young girls and anyone reading this book takes away that they can follow their dreams and dreams do come true. We need to love, laugh and most importantly, to believe. This book also does a fantastic job of celebrating girls and women with diverse backgrounds and professions, so every young girl sees themselves represented and can relate to someone in the book.
