ANIKA COORE, THE owner and designer for LanniC, is a sophisticated, energetic and open-minded woman, offering her personality and experience in modeling, fashion voluntary tasks, shopping and brand ambassador services within the fashion industry. She was inspired by the struggle she faced growing up within the Caribbean region. She struggled with not being able to locate the right clothing piece that complemented the empowerment of a woman. WITH HER LOVE for fashion, and skills in art and needlework, she attended the Montego Bay Community College and received her degree in Fashion & Clothing in 2012. Education alone wasn’t enough, she volunteered to work at fashion shows and in the tailoring industry to gain more professional experience. THESE EXPOSURES TAUGHT her stylish tips that could be easily implemented to create flawless looks. Then, she started wearing her own designs. She instantly started receiving positive feedback and order requests from women. Thus, giving her the chance to develop LanniC, a brand that will bring an aspiring taste to the female wardrobe.

QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS

KEISHA THOMPSON NYSFE 2017 Designer Spotlight

03

02

04

What inspired you to pursue a career as a designer? I’ve always had an eye for fashion. When I went shopping normally I never saw anything that was appealing or sparked my interest. Do you have a designer that you admire? Why? I would have to say famed fashion designer Gabrielle Bonheur Chanel better known as “Coco Chanel.” I know that you’ve heard her story numerous times but I’m intrigued by the adversities that she was faced with but yet she continued to stay the course. Her little black dress heightened her career. She expanded her brand by creating Chanel 5 perfume, but many were unaware that she only profited 0.05% from sales but yet she continued to prevail from this setback. In addition to that, she passed away in 1971. Coco Chanel is a household name.

8

This is your second year presenting your collection on NYSFE. Tell us about them? I’ve found NYSFE to be phenomenal and very informative about upcoming events. I’ve encountered great opportunities both during and after I showcased. What do you think of your work? As a self-taught designer, I cherish the reputation I’ve earned! Consequently, I concentrate on maintaining the appreciated uniqueness and superb quality of materials and craftsmanship for each garment.

05

What is your greatest accomplishment? When I first started out my sizes were 0-8. I’m proud that I now have a versatile line ranging from sizes 0-24. Anecdotally, you’ve probably noticed the plummet in plus and curvy high fashion and being able to cater to those sizes is a great accomplishment in my opinion.

06

Describe your creative process? Since this is a saturated market I do extensive research on trends, brainstorm for different concepts and designs and then begin creating my sample pieces.

07

How do you stay organized when you’re provided with multiple design ideas? I take a pen and note pad with me everywhere I go, I utilize some amazing apps and time management is essential.

Brooklyn Tankard NYSFE 2017 Host Spotlight

1. How has the Reality Show prepared you for your future endeavors or goals?

just really scared of demonic people.... and witches!

The show has taught me to take the good with the bad. It has taught me that at times the the bad can actually turn out for the good. Something that is really horrible and stressful, such as issues you may not want to deal with, or unexpected events can help you to grow. They can help you to mend your relationships with others who are important to you and make bonds stronger.

9. What has been your best/worst date?

2. What was your biggest lesson or take away from your time on Bravo TV Reality Show, Thicker Than Water? Be true to yourself. Always be true to yourself. I have noticed that the times that I am most true to myself is when people respond in the most positive way and are inspired. My true self includes faults and all. I have learned that it is important to embrace your journey and be vulnerable and transparent. I saw how me being who I am inspired others. Sometimes we are not comfortable with who we are, but all of us have strengths and beauty. 3. What’s the weirdest thing a fan has ever done for you? The weirdest thing a fan has ever done for me is send clothes to my house. I’m like, how did you find out where I live!?

My best date was when I went to Apache cafe with someone (in Atlanta) at a live karaoke event and I sang a capella. I had the best connections that I had ever had on a first date. My worst date, was when me and a guy had been talking back and forth for a bit. He was missing a toe but he thought he was a pimp. We would go out, and every time we went out he was looking for me to pay the bill. I could tell he was a user. His ex-girl was a stripper and he was using her too. He was just a bad guy. He was very sweet in the beginning, but then he started getting very disrespectful. I literally never wanted to talk to him again. He was crazy. He even wanted me to carry his shopping back... What is that? 10. What do you consider your ideal date? When he surprises me and he plans everything himself. I like when the man takes control and tells me what time to be ready and puts thought into the date. Most men don’t do that. 11. What’s your one annoying habit? I talk really loud. I am a loud person by nature. I grew up in a loud family. 12. Where would you like to visit?

4. Who is your celebrity crush?

Dubai

Morris Chestnut. He is my baby daddy.

13. How do you prepare your daughter for the spotlight after being on a reality TV show?

5. Are you single? I have someone special in my life right now 6. How would someone get your special attention? He would have to be a man of God. I think it is a turn-on when a man is really in tune with his spirituality, and he is a person who is determined to dominate in life because that is me. I want to be equally yolked. He has to be someone who not only wants to be successful, but also wants to make a positive impact on the world. 7. What is your favorite movie? Hav Faith! duh! 8. What is your biggest/weirdest fear?

I just tell her to be confident in who she is and to not feed into negativity 14. If you weren’t doing (whatever she is doing), what would you be up to right how I would be on an island somewhere dancing and sweating from head to toe 15. What’s something you thought you knew about the fashion or entertainment industry, but learned different? I used to think it was all about talent and I realized it is about much more than that. It is about talent, relationships and your ability to master the business side.

16. Tell us a little more about your singing career? During the third season of “Thicker Than Water” I started focusing on my singing career. I have always sung, I love music, but I really got serious about it on my show. As many people saw, I performed my first single “When I’m Gone” at a release party. Now, I have been creating more material for my album. I will be doing a musical production that is very innovative. You will get a full blown musical production that tells the story of my life and my journey to discovering that I am ROYALTY. 17. Are you working on any new projects? if so, tell us a little more My musical production – taking that on tour. Then, I have a financial empowerment project to help people learn how they can become wealthy by trading on the Forex market which is the largest financial market in the world. I am teaching people how to invest and how the banks, the government and the wealthiest people in the world invest. We are taking this to 120 countries. I am really excited! I am also doing a major monthly celebration of Art and Fashion in New York . I am doing a lot!

I’m not really scared like that, but my biggest fear is death. As far as my weirdest fear... I’m

What inspired you to pursue a career as a Runway Coach? I love teaching and my teaching to gives people confidence in what they are doing. Models are so exposed to the way they look and other’s opinions about that. That it is a tough business. I love to help people build their confidence.

02

Do you have a Runway Coach that you admire? I don’t know that many Coaches.

03

Do you have a favorite pose?

06

What are some of your future career goals? To visit even more cities with my coaching. I’ve never been to Australia, China, Japan and Russia.

07

What is your social media information? Instagram: @runwaycoach Facebook: Catwalkcoach Mandy Dyonne Email: info@runwaycoachnyc.com

Why? I have a favorite side. Depending on the hair, my right side is always better.

08

If there is one thing that you will want people to gain from reading your bio, what will it be? Never give up! Always be determined, a lot of people will say no. But that doesn’t mean that the next time you’ll get a no. It could be a yes! So most important thing is to believe in yourself.

1. Find out which agency you would fit in. A lot of agencies have their requirements on their website, so you can see which area would be a good fit.

04

05

You are a woman with many talents. What are some of your other career choices? I have always been in teaching and coaching. I also thought dance to children in high schools, which was fantastic, because they also needed the confidence to really show themselves. They are normally not used to dancing in front of their classmates. Besides that, I thought undergrads at the University of Performance Arts how to teach teenagers dance at High Schools. Which was a lot of fun as well, I think the main thing is I like to motivate people! To show them what abilities they have, and to push people a little bit further then they think they can go.

What advice do you have for aspiring models? Come to my Runway Class (learn where to start, which pictures to send in).

(Commercial/ High Fashion/ Fit model/ Direct Board) 2. Send very simple pictures to agencies. Don’t use a lot of make up, make sure you have a portrait/ whole body picture. 3. Go to an open call, some agencies have open calls where you can just step in whith your pictures and walk for them. The benefit is that you’ll get a answer right away. 4. And then it’s up to them!

What inspire you to pursue a career as a designer? First and foremost, not in a million years did I ever think I would be a designer, even my childhood friends seeing me now said they are not surprised, but I am. I wanted to be many things but never a fashion designer. Yes I loved fashion and still do. I loved creating my own style in school those days. I even introduced a particular trend back then, that took the whole school to another level. Now back to your question, I guess I always had it in me, 2010 was just the moment year for me. It was the season to bring forth what God created me with, so God inspired me.

Do you have a designer that you admire? Why? Kimona Lee Simmons and DV.

I say that because, so many people do not know their purpose or operate in their gifts.

I’ve used my “Gift for Fashion’’ to give back to this beautiful nation through my annual hosting fundraising fashion shows to raise funds for the less privileged all over Ireland and back home in Nigeria where I am from originally. C A LVON L EONA RD NYSFE 2017 Designer Spotlightext

When I was thirteen, I dreamed of seeing people walk down the runway in my clothing. I did not fully understand the dream then, but I did see the affinity for clothing and being well dressed grow as I watched my father. Appearance was important and his care for style instilled in me my own passion to express myself through clothing.

That is what fashion did for me; it broadened my horizons. My past inspires me to develop new, creative and innovative fashions. The individual I am helps me connect to the individuality of my clients. Now, at age 50, I am finally living my dream – a testament that it is never too late to pursue what you love.

However, when attending private school the uniform restricted that expression and heightened the awareness of my skin color. Those experiences pushed me to experiment with fabrics, colors and patterns so that my skin color was not the only thing standing out. Today, as a designer and stylist, my goal is to help an individual feel extraordinary, comfortable, confident and open to new possibilities.

In two full years, business has surpassed what I imagined. I’ve gone from only designing men’s clothing to suiting for women and designing luxury, hand crafted, leather bags. My incredible staff of models, administrators, media team, brand ambassadors, bloggers and more are dedicated to giving their all to building Clavon’s Wear as an international brand. It is my hope to continue this success for years to come and leave a legacy my children and family will be proud of.

JIMMY F

NYSFE 2017 Designer Spotlight

or the past 15 years, Allentown, Pennsylvania resident Jim Jackson originating from Orange, New Jersey has run a childcare center in the city of Allentown, Pa. Jackson being an Alumnus of Fairleigh Dickinson University majored in Business Administration and dreamed of one day owning his own clothing line. Over time Jackson embarked on several business endeavors which included SCAW Cleaning systems an acronym for Strength Courage And Wisdom, Bonnie and Clyde Studio Salon, Terminal West Urban Authentic, and Ghetto Hills USA which was a clothing brand that attained marginal success in the golden era of hip hop, the 90’s. “I had a stint in the fashion business in my younger days,” Jackson says. “I thought it was time for me to embark on it again. I always had a passion for it.” Jackson, who now owns KULA Childcare Center as a family owned business, says he admires the directness of children. “If they don’t like something, they let you know,” he says. “Children embrace the here and now.” He wondered if he could create a clothing line that combines an urban aesthetic with the unabashed joy of children. He drew inspiration from the center’s cheerful mascot — a sneaker-clad turtle named Kelmorshelby. “It hit me: a turtle is slow and steady and what better animal to use as a mascot,” Jackson says. “I thought I should name my fashion line Kel, just Kel.”

Juskel Clothing was born. Jackson decided to expand on the name and make it an acronym for “Just Kids Enjoying Life.” The line, he says, is designed for adults but encourages people to connect with their childlike playfulness. “Sometimes as adults we lose ourselves and forget the child inside,” Jackson says. “We want people to express themselves no matter what they are doing and look good while doing it.” With a mascot, a name and an idea for simple but sophisticated clothes, Jackson sat down at his computer in 2014, and started designing a script logo with the turtle image. He turned to his friend Allan Davis to help him with the idea, and Davis already having Public Relation and Media experience augmented the visibility of the brand and also assisted Jackson with the duties of creating the Juskel brand. Jackson then took designs and put them on a series of T-shirts, tanks, hoodies and jackets made out of soft cotton blends and recycled organic fabrics. “It just spiraled,” Jackson says. “We weren’t selling anything. We were just giving them away.” However after posting photos of the clothes on social media, Jackson says they got a huge response from people asking, “Where can we get them?” “He’s a dreamer,” Davis says of Jackson. “His mission is to change the world through fashion.” Dubbing the initial line the “Urbanisticate” collection, which Jackson calls a cross between urban and suburban, the men decided to move forward and focus on getting more exposure for

the brand. They did a series of photos shoots including ones on a yacht in Annapolis, Md., at a pool party at the Hess Mansion in Allentown and with motorcycles at the Lehigh University lookout in Bethlehem. “Each photo shoot showed a different lifestyle,” Jackson says. “We want it to be an edgy, lifestyle brand.” The hip-hop violin duo Black Violin, which performed at Musikfest gave the line exposure when the members wore Juskel shirts at a Los Angeles concert, created an 8 part series titled “Redefined” showcasing a Juskel tee shirt with the signature logo on “Behind the Music.” “That was huge,” Davis says. Now operating out of a small office on Hamilton Street in Allentown, Pennsylvania they are debuting their third collection, called Blue & White Rain. “The clothing speaks for itself,” Jackson says. “Our longterm goal is to get Juskel across the nation.”

Kerrieen J. Bryan NYSFE 2017 Designer Spotlight

01

What inspired you to pursue a career as a designer? My inspiration came from my innate creative ability and my natural love for anything fashionable. Having already been a part of the fashion retail industry; the move to focus solely on fashion designing was bold, yet compelling and self satisfying.

02

Do you have a designer that you admire? Why? Yes I do. His name is Yousef Aljasmi. I admire his work because for one, he does mainly couture pieces and his intricate style and heavy detailing with the most exquisite embellishments appeals to my own sense of fashion.

I am a wife and a mother of one. I developed my interest in designing and garment construction after co-owning a boutique with my husband in my home country; Jamaica. Honestly, I have always loved fashion but the drive to start my own custom made line came from the challenges I faced to acquire items for resale. Thinking like an entrepreneur I saw where I could capitalize on custom making my own pieces, as not only would I avoid the hassle associated with buying and importing merchandise, I would also be able to custom create styles of my own preference; which, was the more exciting part and what drove me to consistently work hard at establishing myself as a fashion designer.

consistently designing and creating my own pieces with a growing clientele that’s spread out over the USA, Canada and the Caribbean and honestly, it can only get better.

Being a self-taught designer was another challenge within itself. One that I strongly dealt with when I first embarked on this Journey, but as my passion deepened so did my success at overcoming all difficulties. In that, my belief and confidence in myself that I could successfully achieve my goals of becoming an International Fashion Designer was greatly elevated. It’s just as they say, “If you can believe it, you can achieve it”. It has been 4 years since I have been

My vision for Haus of Kerrieen J Bryan is to develop a brand that has a unique signature style, with “Haute Couture” at the core of it all. Also to have my pieces on all major runways, fashion shows, high-end boutiques, red carpet events, and on the backs of the most prestigious. In addition to this, I would love the opportunity to use such a platform to encourage and empower others to believe in a dream, work hard for that dream, and not to let anyone tell you you can’t achieve that dream.

03

What can you tell us about presenting your collection at NYSFE? I have never presented at NYSFE before but I am extremely honored to have been given this opportunity and I highly look forward to being a part of the show.

04

What do you think of your work? I believe my work is exceptional, and as time goes by it will get more and more aligned with the signature style that I envision for my brand. Which is “Haute Couture Madness”.

05

What is your greatest accomplishment? My greatest accomplishment is having my brand up and running, which, with time and consistent hard work will continue to satisfy the people, fashionably.

06

Describe your creative process? My creative process is pretty simple. I first create the style that I want in my head, then I transfer that to the fabric and from then on I continue to work until I achieve the finished look that I had envisioned.

07

How do you stay organized when you’re provided with multiple design ideas? This is a challenge to be honest, because I am always creating and developing new ideas as I work and sometimes I get stuck on which style pattern is better. So what I do is to sketch the alternative designs and save them for another time, in that I wouldn’t lose the new ideas I came up with and I would be able to continue with the original design I started out with.
