The day is never long enough to accomplish all that needs to be done. Sometimes completing tasks seem to be the defining element to the school nurse’s day. While these tasks are essential to getting things done, it is the people who make school health services in NYS work successfully for children and their families. Organization and competency are essential practice standards but it is the personal qualities of compassion and dedication which help school health professionals make a difference – one student at a time. This past June, the New York State Association of School Nurses (NYSASN) recognized one nurse who exemplifies the qualities we see in NYS school nurses everyday. Constance Griffin was selected to received the 2013 School Nurse of the Year Award at the National NASN Conference in Florida, along with 30 other nurses from across the nation. She exemplifies leadership and pursuit of continual learning and serves as the current president of the NYSASN organization. We congratulate Connie and encourage you to read her President's report on the NYSASN website which shares her vision for building membership and voice for all NYS school nurses. School Health Care for Students with Diabetes in NY Approximately 9,266 New York children, ages 0-19, are living with diabetes. NYS Legislation has recently been proposed (A4987/ S4473), which would permit non-licensed school employees to administer insulin to students at school. In November, NYSSHSC in collaboration with NYSED and NYSDOH conducted a survey to assess current school health care delivery for students diagnosed with diabetes. Almost 70% of New York’s school nurses took this survey. This opportunity allowed NYS school nurses to be active participants in shaping the future of care for these students. The individual responses received are aggregated to maintain confidentiality. A summary of the data will be shared with school health professionals to provide a snapshot of current practices in New York State, and ensure that resources are evidence-based and data driven. NYSSHSC is following this legislation closely. Resources to assist school nurses in diabetes care are shared below.
Resources for Caring for Students with Diabetes The NYSSHSC webinar, Diabetes Management in the School Setting, provides an overview of diabetes management in school settings, as well as the roles of students, health care providers and staff in managing diabetes. Field trips, physical activity, cafeteria accommodations and a brief overview of medications are included. There is an entire subpage on the website dedicated to Diabetes. It includes NYSED guidance, resources, websites and trainings. NYSDOH Children with Diabetes, A Resource Guide for Families and Schools. This guide offers a wealth of information and can be found on our website under “D” for Diabetes as well as the NYSDOH website. Limited amounts of the resource guide, publication number 0944, are also available through the NYSDOH and can be ordered using the form link on the website.

Data Tells a Story– Tell Us Yours NYSSHSC collects data on emergency care provided in schools on the Data Reporting page of the NYSSHSC website. A summary for the 2013 school year is provided below. We believe that these numbers are under reported and encourage all school nurses to document AED, Diastat, Epinephrine, and Glucagon use, as well as incidents of concussion using this form. The electronic submission form may be printed after submission so that you can use the data at a local level in identifying areas of need to provide additional programs, resources, or policy and procedure changes which can help educate or support students in the areas of health and safety. Data collection is one of the Standards of Professional Nursing Practice. By sharing this type of data, school health professionals can assist administrators and staff to understand the value school nurses provide as well as the critical linkages between health and learning.
