THE NYU ALMA MATER The Palisades O grim, grey Palisades, thy shadow Upon the rippling Hudson falls, And mellow mingled tints of sunset Illumine now our classic halls; While students gather ‘round thy altars With tributes of devotion true, And mingle merry hearts and voices In praise of NYU. But college friendship all must sever, And fade as does the dying day, And closest kinships all be broken As out in life we wend our way; And yet, whatever be life’s fortune, Through mem’ry fails and friends be few We’ll love thee still, our Alma Mater Our dear old NYU. commencement itself. “To commence,” after all, means “to begin,” and yet, here we are, with your time at NYU Tandon ending. English can be a funny language sometimes! As I discovered, there’s actually an interesting history behind why we are marking your commencement today. College degrees were first awarded in medieval Europe–a few hundred years before a borough called Brooklyn ever appeared on a map–and those original degrees certified that the graduate was qualified to instruct others in their area of expertise. The ritual marking that achievement sometimes included a gala feast given by the scholar to thank professors and mentors (which, come to think of it, isn’t a bad idea), as well as their first lecture as newly certified teachers. In other words, they “commenced” their teaching careers, and that’s why the ceremonies came to be called commencement (or, in Latin, inceptio). So, to the Class of 2022, congratulations as you commence your own careers or, for some of you, the next stage of your academic life. I’m confident you have already commenced doing incredible things and that you have hit the ground running. To each and every newly minted alum–your alma mater is with you each step of the way, at every stage of your journey, from commencement on. After the last two years we’ve had, I’m especially grateful for the ability to hold an in-person commencement–not Dear Graduates,
least for the chance to see our faculty and students
I’m thrilled to be congratulating you on this milestone

CLASS OF 2022 when you look back at your time in school, you will realize that there is almost nothing you can’t accomplish. You found effective ways to work, conduct research, remain focused on your goals, and forge relationships and collaborations no matter where you found yourselves, and all of this was during a global pandemic! But when the time arrived, you came back to Brooklyn–eager to see your professors and peers face-to-face, ready to get your hands dirty in the lab, all with a renewed appreciation for what it means to be part of a community, our Tandon community.
Camila Saavedra Lozano M.S. in Management of Technology As soon as Camila Saavedra Lozano arrived at NYU Tandon, she noticed the contrast between Wunsch Hall, which was declared an historical landmark in 1981, and Tandon’s more modern facilities. Given her background in architecture, it provided her with insight into the school and the borough. “I love getting to read how the city has transformed through its buildings,’ she says. “Brooklyn has buildings of a wide variety of styles, techniques, and periods all interacting with each other in pretty much every neighborhood. It really showcases the continuous growth and diversity here!” The Brooklyn Plaza, she discovered, was a great place to meet peers and hang out when the weather was nice—a feature of particular note to her since much of her time is spent thinking of how to best build cities so they meet the needs of their context both in terms of their physical and social environment. Saavedra Lozano—who has accepted a job as a Building Information Modeling Designer at Arup, a global design and engineering firm—explains that while the built environment has a marked effect on how users create and sustain a sense of community, Tandon is much more than the sum of its physical facilities. She quickly realized it was a place where everyone said hello in the hallways and where, as a native of Mexico, she often made new friends in the Jasper Kane cafeteria simply by approaching anyone she overheard speaking Spanish. When the pandemic was at its height, she and other graduate student council members meet via Zoom each week to brainstorm ways to be of help to their fellow students and keep them connected—even though many were scattered far from each other. “That concern for each other, the camaraderie, those warm hellos (even when they’re offered via Zoom or from six feet away) are all characteristic of Tandon,” she says. “As much as I love this borough, COVID-19 made it very clear that our community is not dependent on being together in a particular physical location.”

Demetri Sebastian Lopez
Alexandra Brinton
B.S. in Computer Science
B.S. in Business and Technology Management
It would be easy to feel bitter about COVID-19 upending your college years; after all, most first-year students enroll with visions of sharing late nights, spirited discussions, and definitely too many pizzas while cramming for exams.
Alexandra Brinton had always been competitive. Captain of her high school’s cross-country team, she was always out to win and assumed she’d carry that attitude with her to college. “There is a preconception on the part of many that engineering schools are cut-throat and isolating, and I was ready for that, but nothing could be farther from the truth at Tandon,” she asserts. “Being here allowed me to be part of something larger than myself; I don’t think I’ve taken any class that didn’t involve a group project of some sort, for example.”
Demetri Sebastian Lopez is philosophical about having missed out on some of that. Whether remote or inperson, he says, his experiences here–including serving as the Tandon Undergraduate Senator to help effect change across the University and participating in the TRIO Scholars program (aimed at providing support for first-generation or less financially advantaged students)— gave him, quite literally, a new life. “For as long as I could remember, I felt there were constraints holding me and my family down,” he recalls. “Whenever I tried to imagine my future, it felt almost hopeless. I had watched my mother struggle to raise me and my siblings on her own, living paycheck to paycheck while working for up to 100 hours per week at two jobs; I consider her my superhero, willing to sacrifice so I could thrive, but it was hard not to think I’d ultimately be facing the same challenges.” Lopez had always been good at math and science, however, and he wondered if that might provide him with a way forward. “Tandon proved to be the key,” he says. “On a practical level, engineering is allowing me to earn a good living, and I’m very lucky in that it also turned out to be something I love to do. I now have great hope for the future, and that’s a direct result of the opportunities Tandon gave me.” As he rises, Lopez, who is of Lebanese and Puerto Rican descent, wants to bring his family and entire community with him. He sees Tandon as an ideal place for that type of growth. “Every day here, my peers and I transcend the external social pressures and stereotypes society often places on us, and we’re now redefining what academia and the engineering workforce can be,’’ he asserts. “Even in the midst of some serious challenges and disruptions, we worked together as a community to improve our school, our lives, and our world, and I’m honored to have been a part of it all.”
That theme of teamwork and community had been a constant for Brinton for years but has only deepened during her time at Tandon. “I thought I understood what it meant to be part of a team when I ran in high school, but in reality– while you want to represent your fellow runners and school well–you’re basically on your own,” she says. “When I got here to Brooklyn I really learned what it meant to work closely and collaboratively with peers.” When the campus shut down in 2020, it was a disturbing experience to be separated from those she considered academic teammates. “Our professors were the saving grace at that time,” she recalls. “They kept reminding us that this was just temporary and we’d be together again at some point.” Brinton was jubilant when she was able to reconnect in person with classmates, professors, fellow student council members, and Tandon staff. “Sometimes, students see only the tip of the iceberg, but being president of the undergraduate student council gave me a behind-the-scenes look at how many people it takes to keep Tandon running smoothly and how large and supportive our community truly is,” she says. Luckily, teamwork and community are going to continue to be overarching themes in her life: Brinton–whose collaborative capstone project focused on using artificial intelligence to mitigate gun violence–completed an internship at Northwell Health LIJ Valley Stream and has been invited to return full time. “Everyone there has been extremely welcoming, and it’s a very close-knit work environment,” she says, “so while I will miss college deeply, I’m excited for all of the adventures that are in store for me — knowing that my Tandon family will be there to support me even after I’ve left.”

Chirayu Gulati
Jessica Espinoza
M.S. in Finance and Risk Engineering
M.S. in Biomedical Engineering
Chirayu Gulati already felt a sense of pride about being a part of NYU Tandon even before setting foot on campus. “I had read the slogan ‘Born Anywhere, Made in Brooklyn,’ and I knew I wanted that to describe me one day,” he recalls. “There’s no better place for an aspiring financial engineer to study than New York, of course, but beyond that, there’s no better place to do it than our school. Being a highly trained quant on Wall Street is already like being admitted into a small, selective group, and to be able to say you got that training at Tandon means you’re part of an even more exclusive cohort.”
Jessica Espinoza knows what it’s like to be part of a tight-knit group, collaborating and working for the common good. The U.S. Navy veteran served on the USS Truman, a nuclear-powered Nimitz-class aircraft carrier, with responsibility for the reactor–a vital post that requires teamwork and an unfailing sense of duty to your compatriots. When an injury cut short her military career, however, Espinoza refocused on a passion for biomedical engineering that had been sparked when she built a basic EKG machine during her undergraduate years at the University of California, Irvine. Her aim of earning a graduate degree in the field led her to NYU Tandon, where she found another supportive community working towards common goals. “I was nervous about coming,” she recalls. “I had been out of school for ten years, and I was older than most of the other students. But I never felt like an outsider. Everyone talked to one another and shared ideas, and professors kept us constantly engaged.”
When the pandemic hit, Gulati’s deep commitment to Tandon and its Department of Finance and Risk Engineering propelled him to take action: he realized that during a time of upheaval, with the physical campus largely shut down and offices operating remotely, it might be difficult for students–particularly anxious first-years–to find answers to the many questions that arose. Chirayu became something of a one-man clearinghouse, keeping abreast of new policies, admission rules, and immigration guidelines, and organizing Zoom information sessions for incoming international students: he made sure they knew about resources such as Wasserman and OGS and helped familiarize them with platforms like NYU Classes, Albert, and Handshake. Something of an expert on the borough by then, he also helped scout safe, comfortable, and affordable places to live—a definite boon for those unfamiliar with New York City. While he made the best of remote learning, and even discovered new leadership capabilities within himself during that time, it was a distinct relief to return to inperson experiences. There’s nothing quite like being right there alongside professors, mentors, and peers, he says. The bonds he forged, both in person and via Zoom, were a great comfort to him when his mother passed away from COVID-19 and he could not return to India due to ongoing pandemic-related travel restrictions. “That sense of community was very important to me,” he says. “It helped keep me focused on my goals and reminded me that the best tribute I could make to her would be to continue working towards the future she wanted for me.”
Espinoza was a member of Assistant Professor Farokh Atashzar’s Medical Robotics and Interactive Intelligent Technologies Laboratory, where the focus is on developing artificial intelligence, smart wearables, and human-robot interactive systems–with the end goal of creating devices that will advance medical treatment and lead to better patient outcomes. (Early on, one of her projects was an innovative brace that might have made a big difference to her when she tore her anterior cruciate ligament while in the Navy.) Grateful once pandemic restrictions lifted and she could get back to being hands-on in the lab, Espinoza didn’t venture too far afield after completing her studies and deciding upon a job: she’s remaining at NYU to work with Langone’s Tech4Health Institute, a natural fit for a team player who hopes to help create the next generation of biomedical technologies.

Michael Meleties
Jasmine Murphy
Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering
B.S. in Computer Science
When the lockdown was announced in 2020, Michael Meleties was one of the last researchers to leave the protein engineering and molecular design lab, charged with getting the facility ready to be shuttered for a period yet to be determined. He tried to stay positive, reasoning that he could use the time to work on his review paper and look for a co-op. (He landed one with Regeneron, where he would be able to continue his research on protein therapeutics.)
Jasmine Murphy tried to find at least one silver lining in the pandemic restrictions: “I enjoyed reconnecting with family and turning my two-hour commute into a five-second walk from my bed,” she says. She admits, however, that the downsides outweighed those: she missed strolling into the cafeteria and hugging friends, enjoying impromptu conversations with classmates and professors, and simply walking around Brooklyn discovering new spots. “To go from in-person to remote was more than an educational adjustment, it was an entire cultural shift,” she explains.
“It was obviously wrenching to leave the lab I was so familiar with,” he recalls, “but I was well-situated to continue my work and make the best of it, so I don’t want to complain.” Still, it came as a relief when he was finally able to return to Tandon and work (albeit masked) alongside his fellow researchers. “As scientists and engineers, much of what we do involves bouncing ideas off one another and giving and getting feedback. The stereotype of a lone genius isolated in a lab is really not true; we may each be working on a separate project, but that collaboration is so important.” Meleties, who was offered a full-time job with Regeneron after defending his thesis, has also done stints at the Air Force Research Laboratory in Ohio and NYU Abu Dhabi but will always consider Tandon a primary driver in his academic journey and career. “I joined the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering as it was diversifying and expanding,” he recalls. “It was great to be a member of a department on the rise, and we created a really dynamic community. The nature of the research done in the protein engineering and molecular design lab is such that it involves a wide array of people, from computational biologists to materials engineers, so it’s a truly stimulating environment.”
While she was thrilled to return to campus when inperson instruction resumed, it was bittersweet in some respects. “It was wonderful to be back with so many of the people I’d missed while we were away, but I realized that many others had graduated and there were two years’ worth of completely new faces,” she says. “Still, I was determined to make the most of my last semester here, and I kept busy helping the clubs I oversee reestablish our on-campus presence, meeting first- and second-year students and offering them what I hope was sage advice, and, overall, getting to say a more proper goodbye to Tandon.” The pandemic, she believes, highlighted Tandon as the center of the life she had built for herself over the previous few years. Tandon, the engineering school, is rigorous, she admits, and can leave you with intellectual battle scars, but she wouldn’t trade her college experience for anything, because of Tandon, the community. “There’s nothing like the feeling of making it through something together, whether that ‘something’ is a project, an exam, or even school itself,” she says. Tandon opened doors for her, and she hopes to do the same for others one day. “I want to focus on teaching niche and complex areas of science to people who may not have the time or resources to dedicate a degree to those fields, like nanoscience and quantum computing,” she explains. “There are so many amazing areas that are still being discovered, and I’d like to be someone who opens the door for people to join those conversations and understand them.”

Shehara Ranasinghe
Edgar Lei
B.S./M.S. in Integrated Design & Media
B.S. in Civil Engineering
Within minutes of returning to in-person learning, Shehara Ranasinghe remembered how much she loved being here. “I was a little nervous at first,” she says, “but I knew the university was taking every safety precaution possible, and it very quickly began to feel like we had never really been gone, despite the social distancing and prohibitions against large gatherings. I think that speaks to how important being at Tandon is to all of us–even a global health crisis couldn’t break the ties we had made with each other. No matter where you are on campus, you’ll always see a familiar face, even if it’s partially covered by a mask”
Edgar Lei describes himself as a somewhat reserved person. “That turned out to be an advantage during the pandemic,” he says. “There’s probably a grain of truth in the popular meme that lockdown was an introverted person’s dream; I don’t need as much social interaction as many people in order to be happy, so luckily, I didn’t feel isolated or depressed.”
The concept of community–including underrepresented communities–is one that Ranasinghe has thought deeply about during her time here and made a focus of some of her studies. “I recently took part in a citywide project that used augmented reality to reimagine how some of the many public statues honoring historical male figures would look if they depicted women instead,” she recalls. “Now more than ever, it is crucial that everyone feels heard and accepted, and I’m going to use what I learned at Tandon to explore how AR can help make that happen.” She knows that she is lucky to have been part of a place like Tandon and says, “Being a member of the Tandon community means always knowing you’re in a network of people dedicated to making the world a better place. It means knowing that there are those who will always support you and look out for your best interests. Overall, being in the Tandon community has given me opportunities that I might never have gotten anywhere else.”
Those sentiments, however, belie how deeply Lei is involved in the Tandon community; he was, for example, a co-project manager of both the 2021 and 2022 Concrete Canoe teams, which aced the regionals those years in an annual American Society of Civil Engineers competition that challenges students to design, build, and race a vessel that will float — despite being made of a material that laypeople assume would sink upon being placed in water. “Even though I might not have been as discontented when the campus was shuttered as some people, it was still great to be back,” he says. “You obviously can’t build an actual canoe or practice racing via Zoom.” Lei–whose focus is on transportation engineering and who is headed to a job with the infrastructureengineering firm Hardesty & Hanover–was also excited to be able to join his fellow NYU Cycling Team members on rides and races, a group activity he had greatly missed over the course of the pandemic. “I was happy to experience my collegiate cycling career the way it was meant to be once again,” he explains. He expects to remain connected to Tandon after graduation and envisions perhaps lending his expertise to future Concrete Canoe teams. “I feel like I’ll be helping my fellow New Yorkers in some small way at my new job because we all benefit when our transportation infrastructure is robust, and I also want to give back in some manner to NYU Tandon, where I really absorbed the importance of community and being a team player.”
16 // CLASS OF 2022 COMMENCEMENT CEREMONY • MAY 16, 2022 • NYU TANDON SCHOOL OF ENGINEERING
Ojas Kanhere
Aniket Anil Somwanshi
Ph.D. in Electrical and Computer Engineering
M.S. in Mechatronics and Robotics
The word “fellowship” is an interesting one. In the context of academia, it refers to the funding given to a student of exceptional potential. That applies in the case of NYU Tandon, but dig a little deeper, and it’s apparent that an alternate definition–the sense of camaraderie and shared purpose among a group of like-minded individuals–is also relevant.
Aniket Anil Somwanshi has long been an avid soccer fan, and he firmly believes the teamwork involved in that and other sports can provide a lesson for engineers. “So much of what we do is collaborative,” he says, “and that might be especially true in robotics because there are so many disciplines involved, from mechanical and electrical engineering to software and sensing.”
Ojas Kanhere holds the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering’s Ernst Weber Fellowship, and he also belongs to the fellowship of researchers at NYU WIRELESS, a center dedicated to creating next-generation communications and democratizing information-sharing.
Somwanshi came to the U.S. to study because the country is at the forefront of medical robotics, and NYU Tandon was one of the only places in the world with the classes he wanted to pursue and the professors he hoped to study with. (He worked in the Medical Robotics and Interactive Intelligent Technologies Laboratory, run by Assistant Professor Farokh Atashzar.)
“As a Ph.D. researcher, for me, being part of the Tandon community has been very important,” he says. “I’ve been able to interact with so many brilliant colleagues. Sharing ideas and brainstorming happens best when you get together.” While the brainstorming didn’t entirely end when NYU WIRELESS, like all the research centers on campus, made the move to remote operations, it was still a relief when it reopened again and students gained access to needed equipment, including the transmitters and receivers needed to advance 5G and explore the possibilities of 6G telecommunications, such as millimeter-wave and sub-Terahertz channel sounding, channel simulators, and cellular network simulators. “I’m so thankful that we could come back to the lab after the COVID-19 lockdown because for our group, conducting cutting-edge mmWave and sub-Thz field measurements is a vital component that we were missing out on remotely,” he explains.
When the pandemic lockdown occurred and classes moved online, he was able to devote that period to nonlab courses, waiting until the school moved to the hybrid model to do a deep dive into his research. “In that way, it went relatively seamlessly,” he recalls, “but because I’m very extroverted and thrive on social interaction, I really missed that part of the college experience. He has since made up for lost time, however, and found it especially helpful to serve as a senator on the graduate student council. “Tandon provides a wonderful sense of community but my circle expanded exponentially when I began to interact with senators from other schools,” he recalls. “That’s particularly helpful for engineers and technologists because we’re always trying to keep the end user in mind, and being surrounded by such a large and diverse bunch of people is like having ready access to any focus group you might need.”
Kanhere is hoping to find a similar sense of fellowship and new opportunities at ATT, where he is headed to work now that he has earned his Ph.D. “I will miss being a part of Tandon and NYU WIRELESS,” he says. “It provided me with the chance to work with some of the most respected researchers in the field and allowed me to contribute to areas of vital importance to mobile communications. That said, I’ll be very proud to represent the school and the center out in the broader research community.”

ABOUT OUR SCHOOL THE NYU TANDON SCHOOL OF ENGINEERING The NYU Tandon School of Engineering dates to 1854, the founding date for both the New York University School of Civil Engineering and Architecture and the Brooklyn Collegiate and Polytechnic Institute. A January 2014 merger created a comprehensive school of education and research in engineering and applied sciences as part of a global university, with close connections to engineering programs at NYU Abu Dhabi and NYU Shanghai. NYU Tandon is rooted in a vibrant tradition of entrepreneurship, intellectual curiosity, and innovative solutions to humanity’s most pressing global challenges. We believe diversity is integral to excellence, and are creating a vibrant, inclusive, and equitable environment for all of our students, faculty and staff.
