I was offered a recreational trip to “ AttheoneThreepointKings, a bucket list destination at the time, and I had to make the call between work and play – which resulted in me losing my job! thanked him for it several times over.â€? W O N S E H T N I Y A D I L O AH So you’re thinking about a holiday in the snow? A bit of forward planning before you hit the slopes will ensure you and your group have a great time once you get to the mountains, according to Steve (Shaker) Schikker and the crew at Racers Edge, Wanaka.

Here’s four things you should consider before taking the (snowy) plunge into a holiday in the snow:

LOCATION There will be plenty of package deals available for ski and snowboard holidays with everything included: accommodation, rental, lift passes and snow gear. This is a good option if you’re strapped for time, but often it means that you might miss out on a resort or location that best suits you and your alpine desires! We’d always advocate doing a bit of research, using Google and having a good look at location options before booking a package. We think that a little extra forward planning on your behalf means you’ll be happier with your holiday once it rolls around. Check the skill and experience level of your group and look up the stats of the number of green (most gentle), blue, red and black (steepest) pistes LHJO YLZVY[ VɈLYZ [V NH\NL ^OPJO ]LU\L ILZ[ TH[JOLZ [OL ZRPSS SL]LSZ VM `V\Y group. Some resorts have a great mix of all of them, which is perfect for a group with a wide range of skill levels.

To ski or to snowboard, that is the question! This is the million-dollar question for people who haven’t had a holiday in the snow before. ;OLYL»Z H ML^ X\LZ[PVUZ `V\ JHU HZR PM `V\ ÄUK `V\YZLSM ^YHJRPUN `V\Y IYHPUZ [V THRL [OPZ JOVPJL LHZPLY -PYZ[S` HYL `V\ \ZLK [V HU` ZPUNSL LKNL ZWVY[Z& :\YÄUN ^PUKZ\YÄUN ZRH[LIVHYKPUN ZWVY[Z \[PSPZPUN H SV[ VM IHSHUJL& 0M [OPZ ZV\UKZ SPRL `V\Y gig, then snowboarding might be a good one to start with. 0M `V\»YL \ZLK [V H KV\ISL LKNLK ZWVY[ SPRL YVSSLYISHKPUN VY PJL ZRH[PUN MVY L_HTWSL you might more easily take to skiing. 0M `V\ OH]L UV WYLMLYLUJL PU [OL ZSPNO[LZ[ HUK KVU»[ OH]L HU` ZWVY[Z OPZ[VY` ¶ UV Z^LH[ Skiing is usually easier for beginners to get started with, which sounds counter-intuitive because you’ll have two things strapped to your feet to take care of, not just one, but hear us out. With skiing it is usually easier to get up and get going at a relatively quicker pace, whereas snowboarding is a touch harder to master. But watch a few YouTube videos and bear in mind that anything you start from scratch will be challenging. Ultimately perseverance and good teachers can make both sports easily accessible.

Gear There Th T herre ar her are e tth three h things that can undoubtedly make a ski/board trip miserable. Those three things are cold hands, cold feet and not being able to see properly. This may sound like a no-brainer, but many people, especially those who haven’t skied or ZUV^IVHYKLK ILMVYL ZHJYPÄJL NVVK X\HSP[` NLHY PU HU LɈVY[ [V YLK\JL JVZ[Z There are a few ways you can kit yourself out properly without spending a too many bucks to ensure optimum comfort when hitting those ski runs. Invest in some good, cushioned socks, a decent pair of gloves (many rental places won’t supply gloves for hygiene reasons), and a pair of goggles. And don’t forget a helmet! Helmets are, we think, essential.

Rental This Th his i may ma ayy seem se like the best place to cut costs when you are on a budget, but actually there’s some important points to hit so you don’t spend an arm and a leg when renting. Firstly, renting on the mountain usually costs you loads more than renting gear in the town. :VTL VM [OL TV\U[HPU YLU[HS WSHJLZ VɈLY YLU[HS WHJRHNLZ ^P[O SLZZVUZ PUJS\KLK I\[ HNHPU do your research. So I picked up Wayne and drove to Jeremy’s, where we ÄSSLK [OL \[L ^P[O HSS ZVY[Z VM IHNZ Z\WLY N\UZ HUK ^LHWVUZ ([ [OL HPYWVY[ ^L [OYL^ [OL Z[\Ɉ PU [OL WSHUL HUK ILMVYL ^L knew it we were having a beer at the Waiau Pub. So, we hatched a plan with the pilot to touch base later in the week, as it looked like there was going to be a very IYPLM NHW IL[^LLU [^V ^LH[OLY Z`Z[LTZ [OH[ TH` NP]L \Z a crack at landing on the tops. >L SHUKLK [OL JOVWWLY VU [OL LKNL VM [OL ILHJO PU VKK RUV[Z HUK SVHKLK [OL NLHY VU [OL MHTV\Z Hammer down, the [LUKLY \ZLK [V NL[ \Z [V HUK MYVT Takapu. It was a diver’s paradise!

The chopper SHUKLK VU [OL IVH[ [OL WPSV[ WVPU[PUN V\[ P[ ^HZ as the cloud was coming and going. We would not know whether it was a go until we got up there and assessed the conditions. A plan was hatched to drop Wayne and me in one area and the other group in another. We were told to take the YHKPVZ HUK VUJL ^L ^LYL ÄUPZOLK O\U[PUN [V JHSS OPT \W and he would come back to pick us up. >H`UL HUK 0 Q\TWLK PU ÄYZ[ HUK ^L ^LYL VɈ [OL WPSV[ [LSSPUN \Z VU [OL ^H` PU [OH[ PM ^L ZOVV[ ZVTL[OPUN ^L ZOV\SK NL[ P[ [V [OL YPKNL PU H JSLHY ZWV[ ZV OL JV\SK Å` P[ out. weather and ever-changing cloud cover, we decided to have a crack. We snuck to the edge of the ridge and lined up. I nailed the hind in the neck and Wayne nailed the yearling and they IV[O KYVWWLK VU [OL ZWV[ (M[LY H JV\WSL VM OPNO Ä]LZ ^L walked down to the spot where we’d dropped them. We gutted them and carried the carcasses up the ridge. Then came the coolest bit: we had to call in the chopper. Wayne jumped on the radio and called him up. He replied, ¸5V ^VYYPLZ 0»T Q\Z[ OH]PUN H ÄZO 0»SS ^PUK PU T` SPUL ÄUPZO my cuppa and be up shortly!” Sure enough, 20 minutes later we heard the chopper coming up the valley. The mist had come in but it was Z[PSS ZHML [V Å` /L SHUKLK UL_[ [V \Z HUK ^L [OYLHKLK [OL rope through the hocks of the deer and hooked it up to the JOVWWLY ;OLU ^L ^LYL VɈ Wayne and I agreed that was the easiest most gentlemanly hunting you could ever do and was a hell of a lot easier than bashing through the scrub.

Whilst our deer were not giant stags, and it had not been a lengthy hunt, this trip was cool on a couple of levels. Firstly, the way the chopper landed on the boat, dropped us on the tops, where we shot two deer, and then picked us up again and dropped us back at the boat. We were back aboard
