FOCUS
Dear Stamp Enthusiast, It is my pleasure to introduce this, the first issue of 'Focus' in its new, enhanced format. If you are a regular reader you will notice a number of changes that have come out of research into what our customers want to see in 'Focus' - we hope you enjoy the results. Another area in which we have been striving for improvements is that of stamp design. In recent times I have asked my stamp production team to test the boundaries of stamp design and challenged them to produce stamps that are acclaimed - both at home in New Zealand, and internationally. Have we been successful? Each new design brings its critics. Designs we are particularly pleased with will find quite impassioned opponents. If we step outside some undefined code of practice - as we did when we produced a stamp with a New Zealand Post logo on it for example - the reaction is swift and determined. We are not trying to be provocative. We do want to arouse the interest of a broad public in stamps. We think they are wonderful opportunities to entertain and instruct, to make people feel good when they mail a letter. I am personally very proud of the results. As you will see in this issue, New Zealand Post has recently been presented with two international awards for stamp design. I believe that this is testimony to our recent efforts and it has made us even more committed to breaking new ground in pursuit of design and production excellence. On page eight we have featured the upcoming $20 definitive stamp which demonstrates our continued dedication to these high standards. Thank you for your ongoing interest in New Zealand stamps. I would appreciate any feedback you may care to give me.
Yours sincerely
Elmar Toime Chief Executive

t's official! New Zealand Post's stamps are among the world's best in terms of design and production. The SOC New Zealand Post Olympic stamp, which depicted archery, recently beat 163 other entries to be judged the best Olympic stamp design produced for the 1992 Barcelona games and the winter games in Albertville. Designed by Martin Bailey of Auckland, the stamp was part of a set of four, and also appeared on the Olympic miniature sheet.

ourism has become one of New Zealand's major sources of income. Last year alone, 1.1 million tourists visited our country, many of them
seeking an action holiday "down under'.
In this, the Tourism stamp issue, we capture the essence of six of the most-loved and most sought-after adventures in New Zealand. For those seeking an adrenalin rush there's the thrill of crashing through foaming white water on a raft; an exhilarating high speed jetboat trip through narrow gorges and shallow waterways; heli-skiing amongst some of the world's most spectacular scenery. and of course bungy-jumping from breathtaking heights of 70 metres or more. Or, for the less bold, angling for trout in picturesque mountain valleys and deep lakes or tramping through New Zealand's magnificent terrain offer a taste of the great outdoors. FOR

S
tamp collecting is fun, involving, educational and it's a hobby for a lifetime. However, like any interest, a stamp collection needs attention. The young stamp collector also needs stimulation to combat waning enthusiasm. The following guide is designed to do just that. It explains how youngsters can meet others with a similar interest, how they can access special products and services and get the information they require. t. JOIN A JUNIOR STAMP CLUB Throughout New Zealand there are many junior stamp clubs which meet on a regular basis with the aim of fostering the hobby of stamp collecting. A typical meeting might include all or some of the following activities: • stamp swapping • a talk by a guest speaker about a particular country's stamps or about other aspects of philately • practical workshops on how to
collect stamps, how la save and preserve stamps for the future • education about many different aspects of collecting, including how to take care of a stamp collection. In addition. young stamp enthusias1s (up to the age of 22) have the opponunity to meet with others at these regular meetings. plus they are invited to attend a national 'Stamp Camp' (parents are also welcomed to these activities). EUROPEAN DESIGN AWARD FOR NEW ZEALAND POST
A panel of European stamp designers, artists and philatelic journalists recently voted New Zealand Post as the winner of a prestigious international philatelic design award in Italy. The Asiago International Stamp Award was won by New Zealand Post's very popular 19205 'Painting the Clouds with Sunshine' issue. The award-winning stamps, designed by Terry Crilley of lhe Marlborough Sounds beat more than 120 other designs submitted by members of the Universal Postal Union.

1950s STAMP
I
n response to demand for a
high value postage stamp, New Zealand Post will issue its first ever $20 definitive stamp in February next year.
The stamp itself will serve as an ambassador of New Zealand when mailed overseas. Measuring 58mm x 48mm, its large size does justice to the detailed illustration which
features indigenous symbols of New Zealand. The design by Heather Arnold of Auckland incorporates a Maori rafter pattern, New Zealand's highest mountain, Mt Cook, the flowers of the kowhai tree, ponga leaves and the New Zealand flag. In keeping with its high face value, this is one of the most
elaborate stamps ever produced by New Zealand Post. Its production is also amongst the most complex ever undertaken.
The stamp image will first be hand-engraved by the internationally renowned Swedish engraver, Czeslaw Slania. From there, it will go to the English engraving company, Komori. who specialise in
producing security documents, including bank notes. They will convert the original engraved die into a printing plate which is then forwarded to printer, LeighMardon Pty Ltd in Melbourne. The stamps will then be printed using the intaglio process and gold foil on specially watermarked and phosphor coated stamp paper for security.
