Plate-number and imprint blocks

The policy regardin[ the sale of plate-number and imprint has been changed and henceforth, requests for these blocks will be made on ~he following conditions: bloc~s

(i)

Each plate-number and imprint block sold is to comprise 12 stamps or more in all the values up to 1s.0d. or is to comprise six stamps or more in the values from 1s.3d. urwards.

(ii)

Not more than 20 blocks will be supplied in any one order.

2. Special Issues (except Health Stamps): period of sale

There has also 'been a change of policy regarding the periods for which special issues will remain on sale. Commencing with the Anzac st~ps, special stamp issues (except Health stamps) are to t~ kept on sale at Post Offices for varying periods according to how soon a particular issue is followed by the next; but each issue will remain on sale at the Stamps Section of the'Postal Division, General iost Office, for a period of at least nine months unless stocks are exhausted earlier. The period of sale will be notified with each issue. It is not proposed to make any change in the existing practice of keeping Health stamps on sale at Post Offices and at the Postal Division from early in AUguJt each year until the end of the rollo~ing November.

Anzac Stamps

Two stamps will be issued by the New Zealand Post Office to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the landing at Gallipoli on 25th April, 1915, by Anzac troops in the First World War. The denominations are 40.. and 5d. The 40.. stamp is light brown in colour and depicts Anzac Cove with the cliffs in the background. The 5d. stamp is similar in design but is green in colour and has a red poppy in the right-hand foreground. The stamps are "57 mm x 21 mm, in horizontal format, and are being printed by the photogravure process in sheets of 120 stamps in 10 rows of 12. The imprint of Messrs Harrison and Sons Ltd., London, will appear in the bottom left-hand corner of each sheet and the plate number 1A in the 40.. denomination, and 1A 1A in the 5d. denomination, will be shown beneath the third stamp from the same corner. The sheet value will be printed on the top right-hand selvedge. The date of issue is 14th April, 1965. Special information about the datestamping of covers on Sunday, 25th April, appears in paragraph 14. Advice has been received from the Australian Post Office that on the same date, Anzac stamps depicting Simpson and his donkey will be issued in the Australian Commonwealth and the Australian Territories. The Australian Commonwealth and Australian Territories stamps will be available for purchase by mail order at face value on and from the date of issue at the Philatelic Bureau, Postmaster-General's Department, 664 Bourke Street, Melbourne, C.1., Victoria.


Turkey, too, is commemorating the Gallipoli Campaign by having a special issue of stamps. These stamps will come on sale on 18th March, which is the Turkish day of Remembrance. 4.

International Telecommunication Union

A stamp will be issued on 17th May, 1965, to commemorate the Centenary of the International Telecommunication Union. The denomination will be 9d. The basic design show3 a central globe in blue with a white flash across it representing a radio signal an~ on eith~r side are other telecommunication symbols. The background colour of the stamp is pinky-beige and all the lettering is white. The issue is being printed by the photogravurz process by V-essrs Harrison and Sons Ltd., LonCon. The size of the stamp will be 37 mm x 21 mm, in sheets of 120, in 10 rows of 12. The printer's imprint is on the bottom left-hand corner and the plate number 1A 1A is und~r the third stamp from the bottom left ~orner. Note: A number of member countries of the International Telecommunication un10n are issuing a commemorative stamp of a commo~ basic design as described above, and on the same date. 5.

Overseas clients s~ould place orders for any of the stamps referred to above (eY~ept the Turkish, Australian C~mmonwealth, and Pustralian Territories issues) with the Director-General, Postal Divis~on, General Post Office, Wellington. Persons requiring first day covers for new issues, and also ';hose who wish to have mint ~tamps dispatched on the date of issue, should post their orders in sufficient time to reach the Postal Division belvre the first day of sale. The usual fee of 1~d per cover will be charged for servicing a plain envelope supplied by the Post Office. If an addressed envelope is provided, the fee is 1d. Offici.al covers are not being provided by the Post Office for either tne Anzac or tne International Telecommunication Union issues.


6. Provisional Issue

A provisional 7d stamp was issued on 14th December. 1964. and it will remain on sale until a new 7d Pictorial stamp is issued later this year. The need for the stamp arose from the new postal rates. The provisional 7d was overprinted on fiscal stamp blanks at the Government Printing Office. Wellington. The colour of the stamp is mid-red and the overprint, "7d Postage". is in black in the centre of the stamp. Tue sheets are in 8 rows of 10 and in the bottom right-hand corner is printed "Value ÂŁ2 6s.Bd". The paper is New Zealand Star upright watermark. 7.

New Pictorial 7d.

This new stamp, which will form part of the present flower series, depicts the flower of the native shrub, the Koromiko. The flower is pale purple in colour, dusted with white, and is sho7n against a pink background. The stamps will be printed by the photogravure process in sheets of 240 and will cost ÂŁ7 a sheet. Further details, and the date of issue, will be given in the next Bulletin. 8.

Cook Islands Solar Eclipse Stamp

A special stamp is being issued by the Executive Committee of the Cook Islands to commemorate the Solar Eclipse to be observed at ~anuae Island on 30th May, 1965. The date of issue will be ~onday 31st May and the stamp will be on sale at Cook Island Post Offices, the Chief Post Offices at Auckland, Christchurch, Dunedin, and Wellington, and at the Postal Division, General Post Office. The denomination will be 6d and the stamp is being printed by lithography in three colours by Messrs Bradbury. Wi1kinson and Co. Ltd., London.


The stamp has been designed by Wr L.C. ~itchell of Wellington. The main sUbject is the sun in eclipse. but also included in the design are the trunk and fronds of a palm tree. The words, Cook Islands, appear on the stamp together with the lettering, Solar Eclipse - Kanuae Island - 1965. A photograph of the stamp and particulars about plate numbers will be published in the Prilatelic Bulletin when they become available. 9. Pictorial

As an item of interest, it is mentioned here that reprints have been ordered of the 3d, 4d, 5d, 9d, 2s.0d, and 2s.6d denominations. Limited stocks of the Pictorial 3d plate number 2347 are now available in the Postal Division, General Post Office, Wellington. 10.

OffIcial Stamps

Owing to the wide use now made of franking machines by Government Departments, it has been decided to discontinue issuing official stamps. The present Queen Elizabeth set will be withdrawn from sale at the close of business on 31st V.arch, 1965. The Official 5s.0d overprinted on the green "Arms" type paper will also be withdrawn on the same date. 11. Stamp Paper

New Zealand stamps printed by Messrs Dradbury, Wilkinson and Co. Ltd., and ~essrs Thomas De La Rue and Co. Ltd., have been produced for some years on a paper consisting of S~~ esparto, 25% rag, and 25% birchwood. The Post Office now proposes to use for all printings, a paper consisting of 5C'% esparto and 5Q;.~ sulphite as used by Messl's Harrison and Sons Ltd. for their photogravure work. Trials have been made OD this paper by the other printers and, with small adjustments to the coating, it has been found se~isfactory also for direct plate printing, 11.

Postal Stationery

In addition t~ the embossed envelope showing the head of the ~ueen in blue and marked "Pobcage 4d", the Fostal Division has limited stocks ot an envelo?e embossed with the head at the Queen in re: and marked "Postage 3d" (the one in use ~efore the change in postal rates). This latter envelope bears ~he words NAdditional Postage 1d" underneath the embossing. Both envelopes cost 4id each.


13. Western Samoa

New Zealand collectors are reminded that the Western Samoa defiLitive stamps are available from the Postal Division, General Post Office, Wellington, and also from the Chief Post Offices at Auckland, Christchurch, Dunedin, and Wellington. The set comprises 1d, 2d, 3d, 4d, 6d, 8d, 1s.0d, 1s.3d, 2s.6d, and 5s.0d (11s.9d a set). Overseas clients should place their orders for their stamps with the Chief Postmaster, Apia, Western Samoa. 14.

Datestamping of Anzac covers on 25th April

As Anzac Day, 25th April, falls on a Sunday this year, arrangements have been made for the Chief Post Offices at Auckland, Christchurch, Dunedin and Wellington to hand datestamp covers bearing New Zealand Anzac stamps. New Zealand residents should forwari their stamped addressed envelopes with a request for datestamping on 25th April, to the Chief Postmaster concerned, in time to reach him not later than 22nd April. Overseas philatelists should place their orders for datestamping of envelopes o~ Anzac Day, 25th April, with the Director-General, Postal Division, in sufficient time to reach here not later than 20th ApriL A servicing fee of 11d. for each cover will be payable~ 15.
