Postage Stamp Centennial. -

21 st MARCH. 1955.

A set o~. stamps to commemorate the one hundredth anniversary o~ New Zealand's ~irst postage stamps will be issued on the 18th JUly, 1955. The set will comprise three denominations as ~ollows: 2d. A Maori mail carrier. The background of the stamp depicts the Auckland town~h1p in the 1850's with sailing ships in the harbour and Rangitoto Island in the distance. The colours will be: Maori, brown; background, green. Dimensions: 21mm x 37mm with 120 stamps to the sheet. Artist: Mr R.M. Conly, Christchurch. 3d. A portrait of Her Majesty the Queen set in a frame similar to that o~ the original ~l face Queen Victoria stamp o~ 1855. The colour of this stamp will be carmine. Dimensions: 19.5mm x 2511Jn with 160 stamps to the sheet. Artist: Mr James :Berry, Wellington. 4d. A Douglas DC3 airliner in flight. The colour o~ the aircraft will be dark blue and the remainder light blue. Dimensions: 37II1II1 x 21mm with 120 stamps to the sheet. Artist: Mr A.G. Mitchell, Wellington. The stamps are being printed by the recess-engraved process by Messrs De La Rue & Co. Ltd., London. Special souvenir covers will not be issued by the Post O~~ice for this occasion but in respect of orders received from overseas clients, the Stamps DiVision, General Post Office, Wellington, will affix stamps to plain envelopes and have them cancelled on the date of issue. The charge for this service is 1~d. per cover in addition to the cost of the stamps reqUired. In cases where a client supplies his own addressed envelopes, the serVicing fee will be reduced to 1d. The address should be placed on the right-hand side and not higher than 1t inches from the bottom of the envelope.


2. International Stamp Exhibition. To cornrnemora te . the one hundredth anniversary mentioned above the Philatelic Societies of the Auckland Province, acting on behalf of the Federation of New Zealand Philatelic Societies, have organised an International Stamp Exhibition which will be held at Auckland during the period 16th to the 22nd July, 1955. A speci~l post office will be provided at the Exhibition and a distinctive date-stamp will be used at that office. Overseas clients who require covers to be date-stamped at the special post office should forward their orders to reach the Stamps Division, General Post Office, Wellington, C.1, not later than the 1st JUly, 1955. 3. 1955 Health Stamps. It is expected that the 1955 Health stamps will be placed on sale on the 3rd October, and withdrawn on the 31st January, 1956. On this occasion the stamps will be of the middle size - 21rnm x 25rnrn - and there will be three denominations, namely: 2~. (1td. postage + td. Health). medallion, dark brown background, golden brown. medallion, claret + 1 d. 3d. ( 2d. " " ) background, green. medallion, dark brown 4d. ( 3d. + 1 d. " " ) background, red. The stamps are being printed by the recess engraved process by Messrs Bradbury Wilkinson & Co. Ltd., London. There will be 160 stamps to a sheet in all values. A design which was drawn by Mr E.M. Taylor of Wellington and submitted by the Publicity Panel of the King George the Fifth Memorial Children's Health Camps Federation is being used for all values. It features the Federation's registered emblem - a child's head surrounded by the words "King George the Fifth Memorial Children's Health Camps Fed." the words in turn being encircled by a single line. The medallion is surrounded with kowhai flowers and foliage. 4. Southland Centennial Stamps. The Southland Provincial District is to hold centenary celebrations during 1956 and the Post Office has agreed to the issue of a set of stamps to commemorate the event. Further details of these stamps will be released later. 5.

King George VI Stamps.......

Fiscal Stamps. -

The Stamps Division, General Post Offic&, still has stocks of the King George VI series, including the official set. Complete sets of both issues can be supplied. The 3s.6d. stamp - with type in six point Gothic (sans serif) - was first released in June 1953, not Febpuu!'Y 1954, as stated in Bulletin No. 6. Consequent upon the mechanisation of the Stamp Duties Divi~ion of the Inland Revenue Department only the following values ml~ll


of fiscal stamps will be reprinted: 15s.0d., £1, £2, £3, £4, £5, £10, £20 and £50. Stocks of the 2s.6d., 10s.0d., and 12s.6d. values are already exhausted but limited supplies of the other values may still be obtained from the Stamps Division. 7. Coil Stamps. Counter appliance coils of Queen Elizabeth II stamps have been released in the following denominations: 2d. 1st December, 1954. Bd. 1st December, 1954. 3d. 1st June, 1954. 9d. 14th October, 1954. 4d. 1st September, 1954. 1s.0d. 1st December, 1954. 6d. 1st December, 1954. 1s.6d. 5th November, 1954. At the present time it is not intended to issue any further denomina tions. Coils of the denominations from 2d. to Bd. are made up of 480 stamps while those from 9d. to 1s.6d. contain 400 stamps. Full coils only are supplied from the Stamps Division of the General Post Office. 8.

Postal Stationery. -

Embossing and impressing dies portraying Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II have been produced in the denominations required for the normal range of postal stationery. As mentioned in Bulletin No. 6 commercial envelopes were issued on the 1st July, 1954. Registered letter envelopes bearing a 9d. stamp have been on sale since the 22nd August, 1954 and it is expected that the remaining items of postal stationery impressed with the new dies, e.g., lettercards, postcards, printed matter cards and newspaper wrappers, will be issued in the near future.
