Centenary of Telegraph in New Zealand. -

On 1 July, 1862 the rirst New Zealand telegraph circuit was brought into operation between Lyttelton and Christchurch in the South Island. To commemorate the Centenary or this event an issue or two postage stamps is to be made. The stamps are illustrated here. Denominations and subjects are:3d.

In the 3d. denomination the Morse key and the operator's hand are shown in brown while the hills are green. The teleprinter equipment in the 8d. denomination is grey against a red background. Each stamp will to a sheet.

Mr A.G. Mitchell or Wellington designed the 3d. denomination and Mr L.C. Mitchell also or Wellington, the 8d. The stamps will be placed on sale at all post orrices at the end or May and unless supplies are exhausted earlier, will be withdrawn on 29 September. Production by the photogravure process has been carried out by Messrs Harrison and Sons Limited, London. Paper with a consistency 50 per cent Esparto and 50 per cent sulphite has been used.

Overseas clients desiring specimens of this issue should forward their orders to the stamps Section, Postal Division, General Post Office, Wellington. 2. Health Stamps 1962. Native birds to be featured on this year's Health stamps are the Kakariki (Parakeet) and Tieke (Saddleback). Two denominations will be issued in sheets of 120 and there Will also be miniature sheets of six stamps. The postage value of the lower denomination has been increased to 2~d. to meet the current initial rate for inland packets, commercial and printed papers. The denominations are:~d.

Messrs De La Rue and Company Limited, London are at present producing the stamps in multi-colour by the photogravure process. is intended that the birds be shown as near as possible to their natural colours. Each stamp will be in vertical format of 21mm x 37mm. It is proposed to issue the stamps early in August. date will be advised later. 3.

A Christmas stamp which will feature a by Sassot'errato entitled "Madonna in Prayer" is to be later this year. Complete details of this issue have not finalised, although it is anticipated that the stamp will be in October or early November.

4. Pictorial Stamps.

A 5d. denomination is to be placed on sale

This stamp is the same size as the current flower series, 17mm x 21mm, and will feature the Matua Tikumu (Mountain Daisy). Mr A.G. Mitchell of Wellington produced the original design. Colours are: flowers, white with gold centre; leaves, green; and background, purple. Lettering is in black and the value is shown boldly in white. The stamp has been produced by Messrs Harrison and Sons Limited who used the photogr~vure process. The paper has a composition of 50 per cent Esparto and 50 per cent sulphite. A 2~d. denomination which is also part of the Pictorial issue and features the Titoki Berry was placed on sale on 1 November, 1961. This stamp was also produced by Messrs Harrison and Sons Limited. Four-colour photogravure printing was used.


The printer's imprint, plus the plate number is shown in the bottom left-hand corner of each sheet. So far two combinations or plates have been used. One plate shows 1A in each of the four colours and the other plate 1B. "Colour bars" of black, orange, green and red appear in the bottom selvedge of plate 1A and the sheet value of ÂŁ2 10e.Od. is in the top right-hand corner of all sheets. The paper composition is 50 per cent Esparto and 50 per cent sUlphite. With the addition of the 5d. denomination and the recently issued 2td. denomination, there are now nine stamps of the Pictorial series which feature native flowers. S. Official. A 1s.0d. Official stamp printed on New Zeal ....nd Star paper was released on 2 October, 1961. Other Official stamps printed on New Zealand Star paper are the id., 2td., 3d. and 4d.

6. Western Samoa.-

To commemorate the attainment of independent status the Western Samoan Government is to release a pictorial stamp issue of ten denominations on 2 July, 1962. Denominations and sUbjects are:1 d.

Production of the stamps in multi-colour was entrusted to Messrs Bradbury Wilkinson and Company Limited, London who used the offset lithographic method of printing on New Zealand Star paper. Each stamp will measure 21mm x 37mm in a format dependent on the nature of the design, and sheets will contain 120 stamps. New Zealand residents requiring first day covers of the issue should post their orders to the Chief Postmaster, Apia, Western Samoa in sufficient time to reach him not later than 25 June. Souvenir envelopes will be available at a cost of 2d. each. A remittance for the value of the stamps required, plus Bufficient for souvenir envelopes and a servicing ree of 2d. per cover should be forwarded with each order. Remittances should be by money-order or })ank draft.


In addition to being available at Apia, mint stamps can be purchased at the Chie~ Post O~ices, Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, an4 Dunedin as well as at the Stamps Section, Postal Division, General Post O~~ice, Wellington. Overseas clients requiring either mint stamps or first day covers should place their orders with the Chie~ Postmaster, Apia, Western Samoa. The New Zealand Post Office will not be handling oversess orders ~or the new s tamp issue. Stamps of the present issue are available until the close o~ business on 30 June, 1962 when they will be withdrawn from sale both in New Zealand and Western Samoa. 7.
