1986 Stamp Album

1986 Stamp Pack Seven stamp issues will be featured in the 1986 New Zealand Stamp Pack. The pack, which contains all the special and commemorative stamps issued in the p&.st year, will be released on September 17. This year the cover features a reproduction of the 1/- Tui stamp from the 1935 pictorial issue. The stamp issues in the pack are: New Zealand Military History: The Royal New Zealand Navy is the subject of this stamp issue. Released on November 6 1985 the four stamp denominations are 25c, 45c, SOc,75c. Centenary of the New Zealand Police: A se-tenant strip of five 25 cent stamps was released on January 15, to commemorate the centenary of the New Zealand Police. Each stamp contains a scene from the past in sepia tones and a scene in colour of the modern force. New Zealand Vintage Transport: Popular motorcycles from an earlier era feature on this special stamp issue, released on March 5. Their denominations are 35c, 45c, 60C and 75c. International Year of Peace: Two 25c stamps promoting the message of peace were released on March 5 to commemorate the United Nations International Year of Peace, 1986. Scenic: Four of New Zealand's beautiful scenic bays are the subject of the 1986 scenic stamp issue released on June 11. Their denominations are 55c, 60c, 65c and 8OC. Health: Primary school children are the designers of the three 1986 Health Stamps released on July 30 portraying children at play. Two of the stamps are 30c denominations and the third is 45c, while all three have a 3c surcharge which is devoted to financing New Zealand Health Camps. Christmas: This stamp issue features three stamps based on the traditional Christmas song "The Twelve Days of Christmas". Issued on September 17 the denominations are 25c, 55c, and 65c. The Stamp Pack costs $13.90 and is available at most Post Offices, Philatelic Sales Centres, or by mail order from the Philatelic Bureau, Private Bag, Wanganui.

Tokelau The three tiny atolls that comprise Tokelau - Atafu, Nukunonu and Fakaofo - total only about 1000 hectares between them, so the local agriculture is necessarily limited. A curious collection of introduced and indigenous fauna will be the subject of the second Tokelau stamp issue of 1986, to be released on December 3. The agriculturellivestock issue features pato (ducks) 75c; oti (goats) 60c; fonu (the Reef Hawkesbill turtle) 48c; moa (chickens) 32c; pua (pigs) 18c; and ugauga (coconut crab) 5c. The issue marks stamp designer Maurice Conly's tenth for Tokelau. A US expedition in 1841 reported no fowls, dogs or hogs, and in the primarily subsistence economy of Tokelau, ducks, goats, chickens and pigs have been a recent supplement to the main source of protein - fish. There is a lack of homegrown feed for livestock due to the infertility of soils, which is in turn caused by the high concentrations of calcium carbonate - the skeletal remains of coral colonies. This results in the curious sight of pigs nosing about for shellfish, swimming the boat channel and bathing in the pools to avoid the sun. In some villages, pigs are confined to piggeries for fear they might forage in coconut groves, thus threatening the delicate balance between soil, undergrowth and palm. The pigs mainly eat scraps but their diet can also include a more exotic menu of black sea slugs mixed with grated coconut. Every item of flora and fauna must be regarded as a resource. The stamps showing the turtle and crab were designed with assistance from the National Museum of New Zealand. Their respective scientific names are Eretamochelys imbricata and Birgus latro. Both are regarded as delicacies. Crabs weigh as much as three kilograms. For sustenance they crawl up the side of coconut palms (niu) rather than down to the sea. Crabs consume coconut husk and are not looked on as a pest. First Day Covers, also designed by

Mr Conly, cost $2.61 and orders can be taken at the Philatelic Bureau. The 28.4 mm by 42.5 mm stamps are all of horizontal format. They were printed by lithography in sheets of 50 by the House of Questa, England. Plate/imprint, positional or value blocks may be obtained by purchasing at least six stamps of all

denominations. The stamps are not valid for postage in New Zealand. They will remain on sale until May 5, 1987. Other aspects of life depicted in recent Tokelau stamp issues have included sports, fishing, transport, traditional pastimes, the copra industry and trees.

Christmas One of the most famous of all songs associated with Christmas is the subject of the 1986 New Zealand Christmas stamp issue. Three of "The Twelve Days of Christmas" have been captured on 25c, 55c and 65c stamps designed by Christchurch artist, Margaret Halcrow-Cross. The stamps are on sale from September 17. Most Christmas carols, according to a widely accepted definition, are songs with a religious impulse. "The Twelve Days of Christmas" is certainly popular but it is also a secular work based entirely on the idea of receiving gifts. This is the fifth time Margaret

Halcrow-Cross has designed stamps for New Zealand Christmas issues. The 1986 stamps are printed by Heraclio Fournier SA of Spain, by photogravure. Each stamp measures 28mm x 35mm in vertical format. They are produced in sheets of 100 (10 rows of 10). Plate/imprint positional or value blocks can be obtained by purchasing at least six stamps of all denominations. First Day Covers, also designed by Margaret Halcrow-Cross, cost $1.59. The stamps will remain on sale at Post Offices until January 13, 1987, and at the Philatelic Bureau, Private Bag, Wanganui (mail orders) and Philatelic Sales Centres until June 30, 1987, unless stocks are exhausted earlier.

The Committee of the New Zealand 1990 World Philatelic Exhibition are pleased to announce the first souvenirs in support of the Exhibition which will be held at the Auckland Showgrounds Complex from 24 August to 2 September 1990. With the support and approval of the New Zealand Post Office, a specially designed AEROGRAMME form has been issued to commemorate the centenary of the eruption of Mount Tarawera, near Rotorua in the North Island thermal area. This event resulted in the deaths of 153 people and the destruction of !I' I' ~p ''''p' ""'El the Village of Te Walroa . . . . .. - . - now known as the

On 11 June the New Zealand Post Office issued a Miniature Sheet in support of the New Zealand 1990 Exhibition in conjunction with a set of 4 scenic stamps. Our committee has produced a special FIRST DAY COVER for the Miniature Sheet which depicts the official New Zealand 1990 logo in pale and dark blue, cancelled with a specially designed postmark showing a variation of the logo. Both the above items are a limited edition of 5,000. The third souvenir is in the form of a most unusual SPOON. The bowl is a genuine New Zealand penny with an ornate stem, topped by the logo of New Zealand 1990 in pale blue, dark blue and white enamels, all finished in heavy gold plate.

Tourism Something about New Zealand appeals to people from overseas. It may be the unspoiled environment of beaches, mountains and native bush, the variety of outdoor activities available in a South Pacific selting, or the reputation "kiwis" have for being friendly hosts. For one reason or another, it's on a lot of people's lists of "places I've always wanted to visit". A set of Special Topic stamps to be released on January 14, 1987, will illustrate a few of the more popular holiday activities. Designed by Michael Wyatt, the stamps carry denominations of overseas postage rates (45c, 55c, 60c, 65c, 80c and $1), so they will promote New Zealand as a tourist destination overseas. About 700,000 overseas visitors came to New Zealand in the last financial year. That's an increase of 15.4 percent over the year before, making tourism a billion dollar industry. More of them came from Australia than from any other country, but large numbers travelled to New Zealand from North America, Britain and Japan. For a long time visitors were content to view the scenery from the comfort of a bus or train. They kept to the well worn tourist route, stopping at Rotorua, Mount Cook, Queenstown, the Bay of Islands, Auckland and Christchurch. Sightseeing is still the most popular activity, but now more visitors are driving themselves in cars or campervans, getting away from the main routes to see the West Coast of the South Island, the Coromandel Peninsula, Hawkes Bay, Wellington and Dunedin. Instead of simply observing, they're taking part in the many recreational activities available. Package holidays now offer canoeing, white-water rafting, yachting, horse trekking, skiing, or a wander down a wine trail. The jetboat (45c stamp) was invented in New Zealand, and for 20 years has thrilled passengers by skimming along shallow rivers where conventional propellers would be snagged or torn off. Water sucked into the propulsion is ejected through high pressure nozzles,

keeping the boat high in the water and speeding it along even against the current. Trips are offered on both North Island and South Island rivers. About 45,000 people a year get a taste of the speed of jet boats on the

South Island's Shotover and Kawarau rivers alone. A "flightseeing" tour (55c stamp) gives visitors a bird's eye view of mountains and glaciers, or cities and coastlines. Floatplanes offer trips through the Marlborough Sounds on the northern coast of the South Island, and regular flights explore the crater of Mt Tarawera. Ski planes from Mt Cook village airfield fly both sides of the Southern Alps, and land on Mt Cook glacier. Flights from Queenstown give passengers a closeup view of the Remarkables mountain range. Travelling by campervan (60c) is one way to see the country at your own pace. Four and six berth vehicles can be hired, and fully equipped camping grounds are located throughout New Zealand. With 10 national parks, three maritime parks and 21 forest parks, there's a lot of country to explore. No part of New Zealand is very far from an ocean, and windsurfing (65c) is catching on fast in a country where surfing is well established. Predominant winds are usually about 15 knots, with a good days pushing strength to 25 and 30 knots, and up to 40 knots around the lower North Island. Hire schools are located around New Zealand for those who want to "have ago". Climbers (80c) find no shortage of challenging peaks in New Zealand, with a choice of mixed rock and ice routes in Mt Cook and Westland National Parks, or volcanic peaks in the North Island. For those not ready

to conquer the Southern Alps, tramping routes are found in most parts of the country, and many are equipped with huts for overnight shelter. New Zealand's most famous route is the Milford Track, a four day tramp between Lake Te Anau and Milford Sound in Fiordland, a remote area of the South Island. Rafting ($1) has an image of being strictly for thrill seeking, fit, young adventurers. But it's also an activity enjoyed by family groups, with a minimum age of 13. River rafting trips of one to five days are run commercially on major rivers in all parts of New Zealand, some routes being more adventurous than others. All equipment, including helmets and wetsuits, is provided, and thrills are guaranteed. Motels and hotels are not the only choice of accommodation now. More visitors are finding out how New Zealanders live, in town or on the farm, with home-hosted holidays. Sporting lodges cater for hunters or those just wanting to get away from it all, and range from rustic to luxury accommodation. The number of top class hotels in cities and tourist resorts is growi ng. The tourism in New Zealand stamp issue was designed by Michael J. Wyatt, Queenstown and printed in Australia by Leigh-Mardon Ply Ltd, using lithography. Each stamp is of vertical format measuring 40mm x 28mm. Unaddressed First Day Covers are also available for $4.28.
