FROM KIELY’S DESK It has been a prosperous start for some of our members this year. The NZ Met’s Breeders’ Bonus has begun with ten winners to date (27th January). See article on page 40 for more information. A big thankyou to the Board and Management at Addington for making this happen something breeders have long been asking for. In this issue our feature writer, John Robinson interviews PGG Wrightson’s Bruce Barlass on the second year of the new sales format. Many, if not all, Christchurch yearling vendors would have been pleased at the decision to make the two-day sale ‘mixed’ rather than premier and select. This should mean that buyers will attend all three-days and give every vendor an equal chance of a good sale.

There are some changes afoot for the control of Equine Exotic diseases - please take the time to read the article produced by the NZ Equine Health Association. If you would like further information or give feedback please contact our Representative on the NZEHA Board - Dennis Scott dennisscott@hotmail.com. Jasmine Tanner, as part of her Masters Degree, undertook a study on two-year-old standardbreds and thoroughbreds, to find out if the stresses of 2YO racing had an adverse effect on their abilility to race as older horses... makes for interesting reading see page 54. Planning is underway for the 2014 Conference. The date is set for Friday 16th May and will coincide with the Canterbury Standardbred Breeders’ New Zealand Oaks. The programme is yet to be confirmed but the morning session

will cover industry topics and the afternoon will be for workshops and discussing items of importance to delegates. If you have a topic or speaker you would like to recommend, please let me know. The North Island Standardbred Breeders are having an information/ hospitality marquee at Karaka. This was very popular last year and it was great to meet a number of members. In Christchurch we are having an information stand jointly with Canterbury Standardbred Breeders, Southern Bred Southern Reared and Generation Harness. I will be at Karaka and Christchurch, so do come and say hi - I love meeting our members and always have time for a chat.

CHAIRMAN’S CORNER Another breeding season has ended with reports of more mares bred than last year for some studs; the sales are due in a few weeks; summer racing is coming to an end after some excellent holiday weather and racing; turnover is up; and we get to enjoy watching quality horse-racing every week. My feeling is that harness racing is in a pretty good place right now. But, we can always do better. We need your help to improve. It is not too late to complete the on-line survey on what you think of NZSBA and what we can do to better support and encourage you as breeders. The online survey can be found here: https://survey.zohopublic.com/ zs/SyBVXA The early results from over 170 replies tells us that breeders are generally very happy with the annual Sires Register, Breeding Matters and our advocacy for breeders. However, we have identified an issue with small breeders. Some of you do not feel that NZSBA is doing enough for people who breed one or two mares. The feedback we have received is a little sparse on details. So we are going to find out more from you directly on what this means and what you want from us. We will be inviting around ten small breeders in each of Auckland/

Waikato, Canterbury and Southland areas to take part in a focus group, facilitated by an independent person, to find out what you want. Kiely and I will report to you on this in a future issue of BM. We have now had two meetings at the NZMTC with 10 $500 breeder’s bonuses paid out to NZSBA members. This is a much appreciated initiative by The Met and on behalf of breeders I thank the Board for funding this scheme. If you are not a member of NZSBA I urge you to join. Spending $89.95 on membership could be recovered five times over if a horse you bred wins at an Addington NZMTC meeting. I also thank the Amberley Club for picking up the same bonus scheme for its Waitangi Day Meeting.

meeting dates will be fixed (e.g. like the NZ Cup on the 2nd Tuesday on November) and not shifted around public holidays such as Easter.

Personally I think it is exciting that we will have five to eight Group races on each Premier Day. This gives us the opportunity to create and market to owners and sponsors a succession of high profile days. We can showcase quality harness racing not only to our current participants but also Over the last year I have participated other stakeholders and the public. on a HRNZ Committee looking at re-arranging the Group race dates Finally, the successful Golden Girls and premier meetings. John Mooney The Premier days will reduce from 17 to 13 in programmes alternating between three twomeeting carnivals at NZMTC and ATC, with the Jewels to end the season. With the support of the clubs, the NZ Sires Stakes Board and HRNZ it looks like we are very close to having most Group races on these days with increased minimum stakes for all races. The

Second bite at new Sale format

by John Robinson

It’s Yearling Sales time again, and that means ‘Take Two’ of the same Reserved Sale format which became part of both the Australasian Classic and N.Z. Premier 12 months ago. The legal requirement to run Sales slightly differently is due to the newly-created Auctioneers Act, and PGG Wrightson’s Bruce Barlass says it’s inevitable that it’ll soon become law because the legislation has been before Government for its third reading and was signed off by the Governor General on December 17, and now undergoes a six-month introduction period. “The most pertinent point about the new Act is that the auctioneers have got to be absolutely up-front… at any public auction, if a vendor is bidding on his/her own item then in the future we’ve got to announce it,” Barlass said. So PGG Wrightson’s customers have now had ‘a run under the belt’ as far as the new Sales format is concerned. There was the odd hiccup here and there last year, which is to be expected, but Barlass expects Sale Days to run smoother and smoother each season as people become accustomed to the changes. “In the old days we used to get bidding instructions from the vendors anyway, so in that respect nothing’s really different,” he said. “But with last year being the first time that this sort of format was back in, officially, I think it worked well. “One of the things we’ll do differently this year is also have one of our people behind the rostrum, with

the vendor, as their horse is going through the ring. “This way, we can ensure that the communication with them is constant and that they don’t have to be talking directly to whoever’s holding the hammer; we’re sure that the vendor will be happier having someone there as well. “Nine out of ten times, we’ll sell a horse by them (the vendor) being behind the rostrum.” Barlass says the overall Sales results from last year were outstanding. Auckland ended up with a clearance rate of 75.8 percent on its 171 Lots; 83 percent of Christchurch’s 175 Lots on the first day were sold, and 77 percent of the 139 offerings on Day Two found new homes – representing an overall clearance in Canterbury of 80 percent. “That was excellent, the third-best ever in over three decades. “Most vendors met the market and took the money, because at the end of the day, the breeding and selling of horses is still all about cash flow. “When coming up with reserve amounts for their horses, people have to realise that it shouldn’t be what they want in their wildest dreams – it’s more of a case of what figure would they still want to own their horse at, and therefore what amount they’d let it go at.

Barlass’s colleagues Peter Lagan and Kerry Shaw are kept busy helping vendors through all the various stages too, because their expert assessment of what a yearling might be worth begins from the moment they lay eyes on the initial entries. And once a new season clicks over on August 1, Lagan and Shaw start the long and involved process of inspecting every single horse that’s been submitted. Sometimes, they have to adopt a ‘cruel to be kind’ approach. “You’ll always get twenty-odd horses that would just be a waste of time putting through the ring,” Lagan says. “They’ve either got no commercial appeal whatsoever, or something wrong with them. “So we’d just end up costing ourselves business, because these horses’ spots in the catalogue could’ve been filled by yearlings that would’ve sold well. “People are starting to learn though.” By the end of September their selection process is complete and the Sales catalogue goes into production, then early in the New Year Lagan and Shaw re-visit each and every individual all over again. “We’re always updating our own notes on each horse,” Lagan said. “You’re just checking things like the freeze brand, and whether anything’s gone wrong with its development

in the meantime since you first inspected it. “Because a yearling’s value can fluctuate – maybe the sire or dam has done something and ‘taken off’ in the interim, for example. “And then of course we phone every horse’s vendor to give them our advice,” he said. The Christchurch entries are up this year, whereas the amount being offered in Auckland has come back a bit. There’s always an attrition rate between the yearlings that make the final cut and those that end up in the catalogue, too. “And this can be for all sorts of

reasons,” Lagan continued, revealing that originally there were 420 set to go under the hammer in Christchurch and 160 in Auckland, whereas the final numbers that we now find in the catalogue are 352 and 141 respectively. “Ten have died, a dozen or so have been injured, and there’s others that have either developed some sort of affliction or been withdrawn by their vendors.” One noticeable difference about the 2014 Yearling Sales is that not a single South Island-based horse has been shipped north to waltz around the ring of the Karaka Sales Complex. “This is the first time in ages that we

haven’t had any South Island horses go north,” Lagan says, adding that there was something like 30 who made the trek last year. “We say it every year – you’ve got to have a movie star to go to Auckland. And just because someone takes a horse to Karaka, it doesn’t necessarily mean they’re going to get a better price than what they would’ve in Christchurch either. “But that was the general perception – especially after the earthquakes, and due to the quality of facilities up north. A good horse will sell well anywhere though. “Due to what’s happened in Christchurch and the dairy farming

industry, the economy in the South Island has probably picked up quicker than what it has in the North Island.” This year’s three days of Sales are consecutive again, with PGG Wrightson deciding to remove the Parade Day which in recent times has been scheduled in between the Australasian Classic and the N.Z. Premier – effectively reverting back to the style which was originally used up until four years ago. The first year that PGG Wrightson added the extra Parade Day in and separated the two Sales was 2011, the same year that the second day in Christchurch was marred by the awful earthquake that struck during proceedings. The irony of the situation is not lost on Barlass, who feels that Day Two in Christchurch has been tainted ever since – not only due to the earthquake of course, but also because of what vendors and buyers both perceived Day Two to be: a selection of ‘lesser-quality’ stock compared to Day One.

So to counteract this argument, PGG Wrightson are now running the N.Z. Premier straight after the Australasian Classic and have transformed Christchurch into a more balanced Sale of “two equal days”. “We were finding that some buyers, like the Australians for example, were only looking at the first day – and that a lot of vendors were withdrawing their yearlings if they were carded on Day Two,” Barlass admits. “So we’ve cut out the day in between and kept it a tight little package, so that people coming from long distances only have to be away as few days as possible. “Dividing the Christchurch catalogue into a day of premier Lots and a day of others was to raise the overall standard, and no different to how the thoroughbred industry does it. In fact, some of their Sales go for a week when they have two days of a Premier Sale, two days of a Select Sale and two days of a Festival Sale.

“But it’s an ever changing world we live in, I suppose.” One thing that doesn’t change are the resounding success stories that continue to emanate from the PGG Wrightson Sales, for vendors and buyers alike, because to date the ‘CV’ boasts such things as 32 Jewels winners, 31 Australasian Breeders’ Crown Final winners and 52 Sires’ Stakes Final winners. “The opportunities that are out there for these horses are neverending,” Barlass says, pointing to the star-studded field of 3-yearolds that contested the NZ Yearling Sales Series Open Final at Alexandra Park on New Year’s Eve as but one example. “And the ‘ride’ that these yearlings can take people on is amazing – whether they on-sell them as young horses, or end up racing them themselves. “There’s so much fun to be had in the group ownerships that many trainers are now putting together, not to mention the fact that you can end up amongst the stars from the Sale of the Stars.”

Important Changes to Equine Exotic Disease Control The Government Industry Agreement (GIA) on Biosecurity Readiness and Response offers the equine industry more certainty that responses to important equine diseases will be undertaken and the opportunity to be more involved in biosecurity decision making, but with this responsibility comes a share of the costs for readiness and response activities. The NZ Equine Health Association is seeking to represent the equine industry under this GIA, and is inviting feedback on the proposal. Currently the government funds and makes most of the decisions on equine biosecurity activities. This can result in a disjointed approach, with government not getting a realistic picture of the industry’s biosecurity priorities, and the allocation of resources that is not aligned with our best interests. This GIA can improve the situation. Industries that sign up to it will gain a direct say in managing biosecurity risks that affect their domains. They will share, with Ministry of Primary Industries (MPI), decision making, costs, and responsibility in preparing for and responding to biosecurity incursions. They will have more certainty that high priority risks are

being addressed and that all parties will have incentives to invest in preparedness.

How does the GIA work? Under the GIA, industry organisations and MPI will sign a Deed that formally establishes the biosecurity partnership to best prepare for and effectively respond to biosecurity risks. The Deed sets the ground rules for minimum commitments, joint decision making and shared resourcing. It provides for a biosecurity forum for all signatories, to be held twice a year for discussions on the whole biosecurity system. Industry signatories will also be able to meet annually, or as otherwise agreed with MPI, to discuss their relevant issues. Having signed the Deed, industry organisations and MPI will explore the biosecurity risks and development priorities that represent business risks and/or opportunities. Partners will discuss actions that they each can take across the wider biosecurity system (pre border and border control, pest management, as well as readiness and response) to improve biosecurity outcomes.

During active biosecurity responses, MPI and affected industry signatories will be partners through the process, with shared decision-making responsibilities. Partners may also agree Operational Agreements. These are practical documents that describe arrangements to achieve outcomes related to: • • •

Specific unwanted organisms Groups of unwanted organisms Activities that improve overall biosecurity readiness and/or response.

Cost sharing Under GIA, signatory industries will be expected to meet some of the costs for readiness and response activities. Their share of the cost will be determined using the proportion of public benefit relative to the total benefit to the industry. However the Government has committed to funding a minimum of 50% of the cost of prioritised readiness and response activities. Where two or more industries benefit from a readiness activity or response, the industry portion of the costs will be shared between them.

As an incentive for early signatories who sign within three years of the Deed being authorised, MPI will cover 100% of response costs and a high proportion of readiness costs within this three year period. Signing up to GIA does not commit industry to funding readiness programmes or response actions; and numerous decision points are in place to ensure that all parties agree to costs incurred under the response plan. • •

Funding for readiness programmes must be agreed before the programmes begin. The decision to initiate a biosecurity response will be made by consensus, meaning industry can say “no” to a response if they do not feel this is worth pursuing. Industry can set a “fiscal cap” for a response, to limit how much they spend on a response.

How will communicate industry?

Renwick building himself a future in breeding

by John Robinson

At a time when some breeders are idling along in neutral or even reaching for the handbrake, Paul Renwick has opted for the complete opposite and pushed his foot to the floor. Renwick’s decision to increase his harness racing involvement, particularly in the area of breeding for the Sales, is borne from a number of different reasons. Yes he’s upped his mare numbers, but it goes beyond that and his emphasis is solely and wholly on putting a better quality product through the ring. From a business point of view, he believes it just makes sense to do so. “As a whole, the New Zealand industry is probably experiencing the lowest number of mares being bred from in history,” he says. “And yet the opportunities in Australia, both stakes-wise and the amount of races being held, continues on an upward curve – maidens are racing for a heck of a lot more than what they used to, for example. “The most important factor of all is that yes the country’s been in a decline, but now it’s clearly evident from the figures being released by the Government that business confidence and optimism is returning. “There have been noticeable increases in business turnovers and profits, especially in retail, and the flow-on effect of this is more leisure dollars for people to spend on things like wagering and the purchase of horses.

Paul and Pauline Renwick with their son Michael “Stakes are on the rise here too, and I think the Directors of Addington Raceway and Alexandra Park should be commended for their forward-thinking and for giving some confidence back to breeders and owners.” For those who don’t know Paul, he’s a born and bred Cantabrian who’s made a very comfortable living for himself and wife Pauline through decades of hard work in the building and kitchen joinery industries. It’s some 38 years since Renwick first formed a couple of companies sporting his own name, but if the truth be known he started to think like a businessman while still wearing the clothes of a schoolboy. By the time he was 15, Renwick had already spent more than half his life doing “anything I could make money out of”… bagging pinecones and cutting firewood to sell at the gate, mowing lawns around his district, even growing lettuces and other produce and trekking it down to Dunedin after learning the ins and outs of supply and demand. “I probably wasn’t the cleverest tool in the shed, but I wasn’t afraid of hard work,” Renwick says humbly. “At sixteen I left school and started a company, making and erecting six-foot palings and other residential fencing. “It got pretty big, and at one stage I had thirteen guys working for me at the weekends.” He then served time as a carpenter and did a building cadetship under the guidance of his late father Ian and the latter’s company Renwick Construction

Lot 190 – DAVID SCHERGER (Gelding out of Due East) “He's big, strong and tough. Dark bay in colour, he stands over a fair bit of ground and there's good scope to him too. He definitely looks the part, and is a quick learner.” – Rob Courtney, Preparer

Lot 254 – JOHN LUKE JONES (Colt out of Jani Franco) “He might not have 'Movie Star' looks just at the moment, but he's a nice-bodied type with a strong barrel and big sholders. An imposing horse.” – Blair O'Connell, Preparer

Ltd, and by the time he was halfway through his 20s he’d ‘left the nest’ and launched his own building and joinery businesses. These days Paul’s still a Director of half a dozen companies in the building industry. But as far as his own baby Paul Renwick Joinery Ltd is concerned, he’s happy to take a back seat and leave more of the responsibility to his sons Michael and John who’ve followed in his footsteps – safe in the knowledge that his company’s reputation is as strong as it’s ever been. “We’re probably one of the oldest businesses in our field, and there’s only one or two others who’ve been around as long as us,” Renwick says. “One thing that’s got us through is quality; I’ve strived to be the best, demanded it of our staff, and tried to lead by example while ensuring that we work together as a team to achieve these goals.

The Christian Cullen-Nevermore colt Curlimore, with Renwick Farms Ltd’s Nicky Crawford and Andrew Sampson Pauline were very proud when the kitchen in their Tai Tapu house won three annual awards from the NZ Master Joiners Association – Best Kitchen in Canterbury, Best Kitchen in New Zealand and the Supreme Award across all categories, which Paul described as “the ultimate” when you’ve chosen a career such as his.

“There’s probably been six or seven highs in the building industry over the last four decades, and just as many lows as well – but never for a moment have I wanted us to be one This pursuit of excellence also exists of the cheapest, to sacrifice quality. in the couple’s horse breeding “After all, a good kitchen should last operation, which has really gained twenty years. People won’t always momentum in recent years. remember what price they paid for it, but they’ll certainly remember From humble beginnings more than sub-standard quality if doors don’t two decades ago, when they bred shut perfectly, drawers come off from a mare or two and only raced the stock, things grew to the point their runners or hinges break etc. where they started putting a handful “Even from a commercial point of of youngsters through the Sales. view… there’s two parts of a house that really sell it; one’s the bathroom Initially their yearlings were prepared by Anthea Sharpe, then Lynn and the other’s the kitchen.” Hodgson, and five years ago Paul Perks of the job or not, Renwick has and Pauline felt “ready” to take the even ‘taken his work home with him’ next step and do things themselves. at times and six years ago he and They purchased a 10acre block in Broadfield which contained little

more than a house and bare land, and transformed it into a state-of-the-art yearling preparation complex. Managed by daughter Nicky and now officially flying under the banner of Renwick Farms Ltd, the property boasts a 14-box barn complete with permanent rubber flooring and specially designed metal-framed boxes, nestled amongst 12 new deer-fenced paddocks and shelter belts. As Nicky puts it… “Dad doesn’t do things by halves.” But Paul’s philosophy from the start has been simple and straight to the point: top quality sires, top quality broodmares, and a top quality feeding regime. And the results have been forthcoming, because at the 2011 and 2012 Sales they sold a total of 20 yearlings – half of them have won to date, and two others have recorded placings so they’re knocking on the door.

ANGUS HALL sired this six-figure yearling from his first NZ crop... SPRINGBANK EDEN Colt out of Landoras Special

The state-of-the-art barn at Renwick Farms. A few eyebrows might’ve been raised last year when Paul decided to take home his Christian Cullen colt out of Nevermore when it fell $2500 short of its sixfigure reserve, but Paul’s a no-nonsense businessman who sticks to what he believes in. Being a spitting image of his sire, he considered Curlimore to be a $100,000 colt and you’ve got to respect his opinion. Paul’s also in a position where he can afford to race or buy a dear one himself every now and again, so the colt who’s since gone into work with Nigel McGrath could’ve been someone else’s but ended up as his and Pauline’s latest little piece of ‘luxury’. The Renwicks are putting 12 through the ring at this year’s N.Z. Premier, a Draft that Paul believes is their “best yet” so he’s optimistic of some good results. And the ‘waves’ will keep coming from here on in too, because all but one of their 14 mares who were due this season have had foals to date and 24 matrons went back to stud again to be served – so their crops in the future will continue to grow in size, and quality. “I’ve culled some mares at times and will do so again when necessary too,” Paul says, outlining how he’s always refining his broodmare band and trying to evolve the families he’s associated with.

Shy Ann not so shy after all Many names that breeders and owners find in their horses’ pedigrees trace back to the American mare Shy Ann. She was born around the same time as Old Maid, On Time and Lady Scotland, all of whom have a higher profile. However her family is held in high regard. She has a special place ‘down under’ where over many generations members of Shy Ann’s family have become frequent flyers and appear in many different ways in our standardbred pedigrees. She may be shy, but she gets around a bit. Let me mention some of the very diverse pedigrees she can be found in (in alphabetical order): Alleluia, Beach Towel, Buster Hanover, Caressable, Exotic Earl, Flashing Red, Itsonlyforyou, Kiwi Ingenuity, Miles McCool, Mr Molly, Noodlum, Nearea Franco, Pure Power, Real Desire, Scotch Notch…. to name but a few. She straddles time, geography and even gait. Her strength lies in some key branches of her producing daughters, and some of those are experiencing a great revival recently

in New Zealand. At the end of this article I list several which are in the 2014 New Zealand Sales of the Stars yearling catalogue. You can’t get more current than that.

which was the first 2yo filly ever to go under two minutes for a mile. In turn, Adios Betty went on to produce some very successful racehorses and broodmares.

Shy Ann was born in USA in 1943. She was a daughter of Cardinal Prince from a mare called Bid Hanover, neither of them names that stand out in lights, although Cardinal Prince was a very well regarded racehorse which also appears in the maternal pedigree of Presidential Ball and Camluck. Bid Hanover’s sire Sandy Flash is a son of the great mare Miss Bertha Dillon, the founder of one of the all-time best producing families.

However Shy Ann did more than produce Adios Betty. Shy Ann had 12 foals including seven daughters. The most significant branches in the longer term have been through her daughters, in particular Suave Hanover and Adios Betty, but we also know two of her sons (Captain Adios and Dick Adios) and several of her grandsons, and many of her descendants as sires ‘down under’.

Shy Ann is special more for the family she founded, than her own background. Technically, she is part of the Lida family (and family U24), but in modern times it is really the Shy Ann family. She has done all the hard work and deserves the credit. It is an inheritance of early and high speed, strong male racehorses, fast fillies and some great producing mares. Her most obvious claim to fame is as the dam of Adios Betty (by Adios)

The girls Shy Ann’s daughters are the engine room of this family. Suave Hanover’s grand-daughter Sunburn is the dam of Beach Towel, and Sunburn also had No Paba, imported to New Zealand and the dam of the very good Nearea Franco ($441,405). Shy Ann’s sensational daughter Adios Betty left some fine colts which were later tried as sires, but longer term it is the families of Adios Betty’s

daughters that resonate down the years, the best being: •

Tarport Martha (and her daughters Racing Date and Dateable).

Tarport Karen (and her daughters Tempted and Caressable, the latter a champion mare winning over a million dollars, while the former leads to the Sudden Urge II family we are familiar with in New Zealand, mainly through the patient breeding efforts of Chris and Tina Barlow and the producing mare Urgent Need).

And to a lesser extent Tarport Lib (1:56.2 $144,146) which was a very good racehorse.

Many daughters of Shy Ann and their descendants have contributed in one way or another, with the female lines usually throwing up a few $100,000plus stakes winning horses in the first couple of generations and $400,000plus ones in the first four or five generations in different parts of the world. Shy Ann’s daughter Sheena Hanover, for example, is the fourth dam of Mr Molly ($265,980), Spirit of Zeus’s very good son, and is the third dam of American racehorse and Australian sire Exotic Earl ($412,165). An article like this cannot hope to present a clear picture of such a wideranging family. To get the full scope of this family I strongly recommend using the Classic Families free software programme available on Peppertree Farm’s website. This is a brilliant way to get an overall picture of any producing family, with key performers clearly identified. Simply enter “Shy Ann” in the search and explore the family in detail using the Descendants tab.

26 Breeding Matters February

Urgent Need, looking great at 27 years old. Photo courtesy Highfields Bloodstock. The boys Shy Ann’s family has produced many really good male racehorses – I’m talking about million dollar earners Magical Mike and Historic, 2yo Breeder’s Crown winner Digger Almahurst, and world champion Trenton, for example, as well as many others winning in the $100,000 to $500,000 stakes range. Some have been well-regarded sires, however none have converted their racetrack success or pedigree into outstanding siring success or established a siring line yet. The best would probably be Magical Mike, North American sire of the $4 million dollar champion Gallo Blue Chip and many other very good horses in the late 1990s and 2000s. The family’s siring endeavours started through two of Shy Ann’s sons – Dick Adios and Captain Adios. They both stood ‘down under’ as sires in the 1950s and 1960s. Dick Adios, had 42 winners as a sire and 108 as a damsire in New

Zealand. He was at stud in Australia from the early 1960s to 1975, and had just over 400 foals there for 164 winners as a sire and 235 winners as a damsire, one of the best being Rockleigh Victory ($368,303) from the good producer Rockleigh Gal. He wasn’t a top sire by any means, but he sired enough winners consistently to earn a reasonable reputation. Many of his progeny found a good market in America. There will still be many families in Australia where Shy Ann pops up via this son. Captain Adios stood in New Zealand only. He was rated highly by Royden Stud – he was the last American horse targeted for siring duties by Sir John McKenzie before he died and the first one bought by his son Roy soon after. Captain Adios had been trained and driven by Delvin Miller and was a top two-year-old of his season, winning two major stakes races. Just a few years before his sister Adios Betty had broken the two minute mark for a mile, and of

His sons in particular seemed to get Noodlum’s popularity as a sire and better with age and found a good damsire ensures Captain Adios’ name market in Australia and considerable pops up in the ‘back story’ pedigrees success in North America. of some of our good performers and good producers such as Miss Piggy As mentioned earlier Australian (dam of Homin Hosed), Burgundy sire Exotic Earl, which was quite Lass (dam of Il Vicolo, family of prominent in the mid 1990s and Stunin Cullen, Coburg) and of course early 2000s, traces back to Shy Kahlum (dam of Lyell Creek). Ann’s daughter Sheena Hanover.

Other sires from the family

There have been other sires, too, like Wingspread and Sharvid Adios (which were both descended from Adios Betty’s daughter Tarport Rose), Knightly Urge (descended from Adios Betty’s daughter Tarport Karen), and Motu Mister Smooth whose second dam Cirrus, a daughter of Dick Adios, was a Southland Broodmare of the Year. In Australia sire Digger Almahurst was a grandson of Tarport Martha.

The family has continued to be a source of second tier sires ‘down under’. Smooth Hanover was a foal from Shy Ann’s daughter Suave Hanover. He was imported by Des Baynes and stood in Southland in the late 1970s/early 1980s and later moved to Australia. He is the sire of Happy Hooker (the “Wicklow” family) and damsire of the very good Comedy Trenton, son of Tempted and Lad. grandson of Tarport Karen, pops up Adios Betty’s son Tarport Coulter in the maternal line of Real Desire. great Flashing Red, is a son of Tarport Lib. Tarport Lib was a very good race mare herself, and her line in New Zealand also traces down to the Send Me An Angel / Angel In New York family. Many of these male horses had earned plenty of respect and stake money on the racetrack, but would fairly be described as second-tier sires. None have really impacted on the breed and our pedigrees in the same way that Bachelor Hanover and Dancer Hanover did for The Old Maid, or Good Time did for On Time, or Storm Damage and Race Time have done for Lady Scotland. Yes, Beach Towel and sons Jenna’s Beach Boy and Sands A Flyin have had moderate success as sires, and as a damsire sire Beach Towel has become part of the family of Somebeachsomewhere and many other top performers. Real Desire is a successful sire in America although under-rated and still finding his feet ‘down under’, and he has a top son Tell All ($1,568,183) standing at Empire Stallions in Victoria, but I would say the Golden Miss maternal line is a stronger influence in both father and son from a pedigree perspective. More recently, two other well-bred and race-proven sires with Shy Ann connections are having a shot at success in Australia - BGs Folly (by Artsplace) is now standing as a sire at Mountain View Stud in Victoria, and is descended from Tarport Lib. Also in Victoria, the very good We Will See ($2,549,409) by Western Hanover, arrived at Warwick Stud mid-2013. He traces back through Racing Date to Tarport Martha. Through the years there have been some attempts to breed back to the family through sires/damsires and

The Kiwi connections today

• • • • •

As you can see, New Zealand has had plenty of connection with this family over the years (and Australia maybe more so), including imported mares from America which have founded families here.

Shy Ann’s descendants are leaving top quality current racehorses. Perhaps the most recent star is Alleluia, the son of Shy Annie (a tip o’ the hat to Shy Ann), which is a daughter of Sudden Urge II. Another current success is Pure Power. Yet another is the very good filly (Its) Onlyforyou.

Let’s bring this family right up to date, by looking at the 2014 yearling sales in New Zealand. The catalogue includes (through sire, damsire or maternal line connection) a significant number of yearlings with Shy Ann in their blood. For space reasons, I haven’t included the many with Noodlum appearing as a damsire somewhere along the line, or where Real Desire appears as a sire.

This is not a complete list by any means. The point is: many horses of the future (in the yearling sale or not) will have Shy Ann running through their veins. Maternal lines are like a river. Some tributaries are consistent in their flow, others soon dry up, some are never given a real chance, and others go underground for a while and wait for someone to tap into the aquifer. Frank Marrion has published a good article in the New Zealand Harness Weekly of November 7, 2013 which tracks Highfields Bloodstock’s (Chris and Tina Barlow) commitment to this family, which is well worth a read, in terms of the patience, belief and thought required to see quality come through. If you strike it right, you may tap into this family and find a well of quality that has its head water back in the 1940s with a wonderful mare called Shy Ann. Bee Pears also writes the blog b4breeding.com about standardbred pedigrees and issues of interest to breeders.

Gordon has held a trainer’s and driver’s licence since the 1950s, and to this day he still enjoys the buzz of being out on the track. In saying that, he didn’t expect Winfield Dougall to take him quite so literally recently when he actually dumped Gordon ‘on’ the track after he swung around at the start of their race at Invercargill on January 21 this year, causing the race to be declared null and void and then re-run after the trotter tore off driver-less. Gordon knows that you just have to take the knocks at times though, and it doesn’t lessen his love for the game one bit. He’s also dabbled in breeding over the

continued from page 34 years, but lately he’s been trying to find new homes for his last couple of mares… “If I get them served it just means I need more land to keep them on. “I’m still living on part of my family’s original property here in Roxburgh East, but I’ve gradually whittled it down to about two acres because I don’t need much more than the house and a small stable. “Plus a track which is over the back fence, on a bit of Council Reserve land that I lease,” he said. There have been times during his life when Gordon’s been in charge of much larger chunks of terra firma, because after he finished as Foreman of the Rabbit Board in 1971 he went into fruit growing “for a good few years”. “I had my place, plus another thirty-two acres up the road and also leased three other properties,” he recalled. “We grew things like raspberries, strawberries and apricots, and it was good. But when the big consortiums started up, I could see that it was time to get out.” Gordon then held a position as Noxious Plant Officer, working for the Tuapeka, Vincent and Lakes Counties and then the Regional Council once they merged. He was employed in the role up until the turn of the century when they ‘disestablished’ his Unit, and he decided that at the age of 68 it was probably time he retired from the workforce.

“I still wander round the hills at Gore two Decembers ago when times; it keeps you fit,” he says. Allan Beck was in the sulky. During one of his hillside treks back in 1961, Gordon actually discovered the Nassella Tussock in Roxburgh for the first time and raised the alarm. He was still on the Rabbit Board at that stage, but knew all about the serious economic threat from a Department of Agriculture display he remembered seeing in Alexandra. “Oh yeah, it’s a baddie.

“I never charged anybody a service fee though, so when you’re giving them away you don’t tend to get the greatest of mares unfortunately. “Sadly, Shingle Creek actually died on my property. I had a hotwire marking the boundary near a bank, and someone must’ve inadvertently moved it and forgotten to put it back.

Asked if he’s a rugby fan, being from down south and all, Gordon replies with one word that not only answers the question in a heartbeat but signals that he’s pretty staunch about who he supports… “Ooo-taaaa-gooo!”.

in his local Roxburgh Rugby Club where he’s the Patron; it’s been around just a bit longer than him, because they recently held their 125th reunion. “I’ve raced most of my horses in Southland over the years,” he says. “Invercargill’s only two hours away and so is Dunedin. It’s a bit longer to Oamaru, and that’s about as far up as I’ve gone really.” On his own since the early 1970s, the father of two daughters and great-grandfather “six times” says he enjoys a spot of salmon and mainly trout fishing when he gets a chance. “I did have a boat once but I sold that, because I’ve outlived most of my cobbers who used to come fishing with me,” he said. Gordon isn’t sure whether Winfield Dougall will still be around next January when it’s time for his next local racemeeting, but if not then he might just have an able replacement – Springfield Rowan, a 3-year-old by Shingle Creek out of the Ermis mare Lady Muriel which stems from the same family as Highview Tommy. “He’s still a colt and isn’t very big, but he’s lovely and a really nicenatured horse that paces along free-legged no worries. “It’d be nice to think he could be ready to line up this time next year, because I’d still like to win that race.”

THE RETURN TO PROMINANCE OF REAL DESIRE One of the more intriguing aspects of the 2014 round of New Zealand Yearling Sales is the return (in numbers) of the progeny of Real Desire.

Due to poor health, Real Desire did not return to stud in New Zealand for the 2008 season. This break in continuity has put him on the back foot with his stud career downunder.

As the winner of over $3.3 million in a stellar race career, Real Desire attracted huge interest from breeders when he first stood in New Zealand in 2007.

While he did return to New Zealand in 2009 and 2010, Real Desire’s absence for a season reduced his profile and he struggled for numbers.

The resulting crop of foals made an immediate impact and included three Group 1 winning two-yearolds – Cowgirls N Indians (NZ Jewels and Aust Breeders Crown, NZ 2yo Filly of the Year), Lets Elope (NZ Sires Stakes Open Final) and Secret Desire (Vicbred 2yo Fillies Final). While the brilliant Cowgirls N Indians tragically broke down, Lets Elope has gone on to win $280,000 and numerous other highly talented individuals have also emerged from this debut crop – including the likes of Regal Knight (1:53.2, 2nd NSW Derby), Awesome Belmer (12 wins, $100,175), Desirable Guy (14 wins, $95,623), All I Want (14 wins, $87,406), Freespin (1:53, $82,627), Reuben Brogden (12 wins, $90,134), Canardly Lover (8 wins, $86,492), Realmein (8 wins $88,030), All Star Man (6 wins, $69,272) and Spirit And Desire (9 wins, $66,341).

It all changed, however, in 2011 off the back of the wonderful racetrack success of his first crop of two-yearolds. The numbers and - most importantly - the quality returned. Only Bettor’s Delight served more mares than Real Desire did in the 2011/12. The Real Desire yearlings selling in 2014 are the foals of this bumper crop. All told, Real Desire has 20 colts and 12 fillies selling in New Zealand in 2014 – and the quality is very much there.

Cowgirls N Indians is out of an In The Pocket mare. There are seven yearlings in the sales bred on this same cross including a half-brother to Tintin In America and a colt from a full-sister to Christian Cullen. Lets Elope and All Star Man are out of Soky’s Atom mares. There are three yearlings in the sales bred on this same cross including a half-brother to Lancome. Two other compelling Real Desire lots are both colts from Christian Cullen mares – one mare a half sister to Venus Serena, the other a half to New Age Man. Astute yearling buyers will remember the success of Real Desire’s last significant crop and be on the lookout for the next Cowgirls N Indians or Lets Elope at Karaka and Christchurch this year.

All told, Real Desire’s first crop in New Zealand and Australia has produced a tremendous 110 individual winners including 57 in 2:00.

Gaius Caesar reigns supreme in NSW A pacer bred in New Zealand, owned in South Australia, trained in New South Wales and sired by a Victorian stallion is proving one of the most outstanding pacers in Australia today. It is Gaius Caesar, a seven-year-old gelding bred by Coastal Taranaki breeder the late Brian Fleming, owned by Adelaide businesswoman Francesca Treccase and trained by Bankstown professional horseman Darren Binskin. He is a son of the In The Pocket horse Julius Caesar, a lightly raced brother to Christian Cullen who is making a name for himself at the stud at Mountain View, Ballarat. Placed at his only start for Richard Brosnan, Gaius Caesar was bought by Treccase as a three-year-old and originally trained in Victoria by Tony Peacock, who racked up three successes with him from April to June 2010. Later entrusted to Jon KingstonMayne in Adelaide as a four-year-old, the gelding won 15 of his next 24 starts and, at one stage, chalked up an amazing 11 wins in a row at Globe Derby Park! Transferred to Binskin’s care at the outset of his six-year-old campaign, Gaius Caesar’s career is continuing to take an another upwards spiral and he is widely regarded as one of the nation’s premier sprinters and stayers.

From 26 starts last season Gaius Caesar posted 10 wins and six placings for $351,270, making him the eighth highest stakes earning pacer in the country for 2012/13. He was subsequently named the NSW Aged Pacer of the Year.

and ownership without any success through the years while working the farm and raising a family, it was only in the early 1980’s when he started training himself and he bought into the Norice family breed that his luck began to change,” Nick said.

One of his memorable wins as a sixyear-old was the Group 1 $200,000 Len Smith Mile in a lifetime mark of 1:51.6 at Menangle, and at the same age he won the Cordina Sprint (in 1:51.7) and the Bohemia Crystal, both Group 1 $100,000 events. He has since won several other free-foralls and open class races.

Brian purchased Happy Hooker as a yearling from the 1984 National Yearling Sale held at Claudelands and she has gone on to become the foundation mare for this successful branch of the family.

All told, Gaius Caesar boasts the splendid record of 67 starts for 30 wins and 15 placings for $434,031 in stakes. A member of one of New Zealand’s most successful maternal families, that tracing to noted ancestress Norice, Gaius Caesar was bred by Brian Fleming, a dairy farmer and hobby breeder from Pungarehu. According to his son Nick, Brian grew up in a family that worked horses on the farm and was involved in harness racing. “The best horse his father Richard owned was Ricochet, a son of Logan Derby who won the 1957 Hannon Memorial. He stood at stud and still features in bloodlines today via Changeover, whose third dam Nell Air is by Ricochet,” Nick Fleming said. “While always interested in harness racing and dabbling with breeding

Nick said: “Dad selected Happy Hooker as she was a daughter of a previous yearling sales topper he had seen sold in Taradette (a half-sister to Sakuntala by Lordship), shelling out $2,400 for her thinking he was buying a Smooth Fella yearling. It was only after the hammer had gone down that he realised she was by Smooth Hanover, better known as a broodmare sire!” Happy Hooker won one race at New Plymouth (Brian’s second win as a trainer) from an injury shortened career, before embarking on a breeding career where she left nine live foals (all qualified) for seven winners, including the Group winners Wicklow Hill 1:51.2 (Group 3 Thames Golden Mile) and Wicklow Bay 1:59.8 (Group 2 Waikato Flying Mile). Other winning foals left by Happy Hooker include the three-win Roydon Glen mare Isle Of Inishfree, the dam of eight winners including current NZ record holders River Waltz

1:52.6 (USA) and River Polka (1:56), and the one-win Falcon Seelster mare Wicklow Heather (2:02.9), the dam of Gaius Caesar. Wicklow Heather, whose first three foals all qualified, now has a yearling filly by Courage Under Fire named Wicklow Star, a filly foal by American Ideal (making her a close relation to River Polka) and has had a positive test to Christian Cullen.

Brendan Fleming, is being offered for sale at the 2104 Australasian Classic Yearling Sale in February as Lot 31, while another close relative, a colt by Mach Three from River Towel (out of Isle Of Inishfree), owned by Phil Fleming, is also being offered in the same catalogue as Lot 8.

Phil, who helped his father train from the late 1990’s, continues to train one or two from the line from a dairy farm at Okato and he and Nick are also breeding from a couple of mares in River Towel (Beach Towel-Isle Of Inishfree) and River Liffey (Live Or Die-Isle Of Inishfree).

“Given the click with Direct Scooter that has resulted in Gaius Caesar being Julius Caesar’s best performed progeny, the idea has been to go to better performed sires descending from Direct Scooter,” Nick stated. Wicklow Star, a yearling filly by Courage Under Fire owned by

Truly irresistible catalogue for 2014 APG yearling sales An exceptional and exciting group of standardbred yearlings have been nominated for the 2014 round of the Australian Pacing Gold sales in February and March. While last year’s APG sale was a strong and deep catalogue, there are strong early signs that the 2014 sale could be even better!

of the combined Melbourne and Sydney catalogues.” In total, 485 yearlings are catalogued across APG’s four sales at Melbourne (190 lots) on Sunday, February 2, Sydney (170 lots) Saturday March 1, Brisbane (56 lots) Sunday, February 16 and Melbourne Autumn (69 lots) on Sunday, March 16.

The country’s top commercial breeders and studmasters are strongly represented at Australia’s premier yearling sale, and the pedigrees on offer are truly world class.

As always, the catalogue contains yearlings by most of Australia’s best, and most sought after stallions. More than ever, the 2014 APG catalogue is dominated by the progeny of either the proven elite sires, or the hottest emerging sires,” APG general manager David Boydell said. “To give you an idea, the progeny of American Ideal, Art Major, Bettor’s Delight, Christian Cullen, Courage Under Fire, Mach Three, Rock N Roll Heaven, Rocknroll Hanover, Shadow Play, Somebeachsomewhere and Sportswriter, collectively account for nearly three-quarters of the 2014 Melbourne catalogue and two-thirds of the 2014 Sydney catalogue. This compares to 2013 where the same sires only accounted for 53 percent

Training and racing two-year-olds good or bad? Racing two year old horses has long been a contentious issue and many people believe horses are not mature enough to handle the physical demands of racing at that age. This view is strongly supported by animal welfare lobbyists but recent scientific evidence may shed a different light on training and racing young horses. In the USA it has long been believed that Thoroughbreds that raced as two year olds had more lifetime starts than horses that began racing later in life. The New Zealand Racing Board funded a project with Massey University in order to investigate training and racing milestones attained at two years of age and the association with career length and racing success in Thoroughbred and Standardbreds in New Zealand. The project was conducted by me as a Masters degree along with Dr Chris Rogers and Professor Elwyn Firth. We used the 2001 foal crop of both Standardbreds and Thoroughbreds as this gave us data to the end of the horse’s 7-year-old year to analyse. The Standardbred and Thoroughbred data was analysed and published separately but the same method of

analysis was used for both datasets. The training and racing milestones used were; registered with a trainer (when the horse officially entered training), trialled (when the horse first trialled), and raced (when the horse first raced). Career length was measured as both number of total starts and number of years raced. Racing success was measured as whether a horse had won a race, placed (first-to-third) in a race, and total stake earnings. The Standardbred foal crop contained 3,032 horses (1,521 males and 1,511 females) and the Thoroughbred foal crop 4,683 horses (2,230 males

and 2,453 females). The number of horses to achieve each milestone and the age at which they achieved it was calculated. The most startling factor in this initial analysis was that 32% of Standardbred foals and 33% of Thoroughbred foals that failed to reach the first milestone of being registered with a trainer. This represents significant wastage and must be a concern to the industry particularly with the decline in foals produced in recent years. Most horses were first registered with a trainer as 2-year-olds (34% Standardbreds and 42% Thoroughbreds), 20% Standardbreds trialled as 2-yearolds, but only 9% Standardbreds and Thoroughbreds raced as 2-year-olds. When career length was assessed Standardbred horses that were registered with a trainer as 2-yearolds or raced as 2-year-olds had significantly more race starts and more years racing than horses that attained the milestones at a later age (3-year-old or older). Similarly,

Thoroughbred horses that raced as 2-year-olds had significantly more race starts and years racing than their counterparts that started at a later age. Standardbred and Thoroughbred horses that were registered with a trainer, trialled, or raced as 2-yearolds were more likely to win, or be placed in a race and earned more stakes money than horses that first attained the milestones as 3-yearolds or older. From these results we were able to conclude that two-year-old training and racing milestones had a strong positive association with successful racing career outcomes. This study was based on data analysis only so it did not investigate the underlying biology related to training and racing 2-year-olds. However, it does tie in with the findings of other authors who have identified that exercise in young horses has a positive effect on musculoskeletal health. Recent scientific evidence

has shown that horses exercising from a young age have increased bone density, improved articular cartilage and tendon health. In conclusion, from an industry perspective the correct management and training of horses in their 2-yearold year could have important implications for future horse performance. A more worrying factor is the level of wastage particularly the one-third of the foal crop that fails to be officially registered with a trainer and I believe this should become a large area of future research. The results of the Standardbred 2-year-old study are published in the New Zealand Veterinary Journal and the Thoroughbred study is published in Equine Veterinary Journal. If you would like to read this work please feel free to contact me at j.c.tanner@ massey.ac.nz and I will send you a copy.

Joints - Arthritis - DJD

Part 2

by Tina Thorowgood

What are the Signs? At first the horse may not show actual lameness, but that will come eventually. Initially the usual pain signs of discomfort, ears back, grumpy reaction to being pushed to move, restless tail when moving, personality change, then shortened steps, feeling to the rider of a jarring through the horse.

the area of the pain is located then X-rays will be taken to help establish the cause. Also taking a sample of the fluid from the joint (synovial) can be tested to indicate the presence of arthritis. This can also indicate the extent of the degeneration by the count of the cartilage and bone cells. Possible bone fractures are also detectable.

The use of x-rays alone can create misleading diagnosis, indeed in the early part of the disease very little sign of DJD may show on x-ray. Some changes may show and could mis-lead the diagnosis, so x-rays are used after other signs are confirmed, merely to assess the extent of the disease, or indeed show fractures or developmental abnormalities which Early on there may be a mild may be the true cause of the pain. lameness which seems to come and Bone spurs are not an indication as go. actually see the extent of the damage. Most veterinarians, however, do not routinely use arthroscopy as a diagnostic because it is an invasive procedure requiring anaesthesia.

What Can be Done As stated it is not curable, it is progressive so the very best that we can do is to prevent it. As always experience is needed to successfully care for and work with a horse. If you don’t have that experience to truly provide a balanced healthy diet, a correct work or exercise regime, understand conformation and shoeing , provide the specific care after trauma or injury, then seek qualified and expert assistance . Lack of education and knowledge creates many of the unnecessary chronic conditions in a horse. So from the above causes you can deduce that to prevent the onset of DJD, start from the earliest days and provide a good balanced nutrition to maximise quality bone and joint development. Before breaking in a horse should be assessed for conformation, and be targeted to be utilised in a way that is appropriate to that confirmation. He needs to be well shod (balanced and level and true to his angles) by an experienced person, in a way to reduce stress and concussive forces

NORTH ISLAND UPDATE

Jill Stockman

The Summer is now upon us and the 2013/14 breeding season starts to wind down or be finished for a lot of us in the North. The PGG Wrightson Sale Of The Stars sales catalogue is now out, and again the listings for our Northern sale seem very good. I am hoping that the product presented this year will be outstanding! Vendors this is your shop window and your time to shine. Last year some results were disappointing as the product presented was not as good as recent years. The Christchurch vendors did a super job with their presentation last year. We need to keep the standards high and reap the rewards! The yearling sales results coming out of the USA the last couple of months are very positive, which is good considering the USA financial climate of recent times. The PGG Wrightson Sale Of The Stars at Auckland is on Monday 17th February with the parade on the Sunday at 2.30pm.

Studs in the North report that they foals. If you require any details have had a good season and received contact me and I will send through good patronage of their stallions. We some photos of what we have. have never had such a good choice of top class stallions to breed from.

Racing

A most stressful occasion for our young foals before they get weaned is branding time, and I would like to take this opportunity to thank Gary Hooper and his wife Robin for the wonderful job they do. Gary is so calm and relaxed with the young ones and always on hand to help with a naughty one if required. Its great having a good horseman doing this important job. Robin is his able assistant making sure that all the paperwork is correct and everything recorded. A big thank you to you both from the NI breeders. I can’t stress enough the importance of having a safe mare and foal crush if you are breeding at home. This enables safe handling for your vet of the mare and also enables your foal to be safely handled and given any treatments required.
