FROM KIELY’S DESK Welcome to the yearling sales edition of Breeding Matters. A big thank-you to all of the advertisers who have supported us in this issue, without you we could not publish this magazine. It is a nervous time for many breeders who have yearlings entered into the sales. Their journey to the sales started two-years ago when making their breeding decisions. Then comes the care of the mare during pregnancy and getting the foal safely delivered. Once born, the foal will be carefully managed to ensure that he/she grows into a strong, robust and a sales worthy yearling for a lucky bidder to purchase. The yearling sales are a vital tool for cash flow and moving stock on. There is a wonderful selection of yearlings on offer this year, as in the past, so we hope you take the time to view those advertised in this magazine and most of all put your hand up to buy! This issue of Breeding Matters is sent to NZSBA members, trainers and drivers plus those who have bought at the sales. If this is your first experience of Breeding Matters, we hope you enjoy. If you would like to be put on the mailing list for other issues, please contact me on 03 339 4168 or kiely.buttell@vodafone.co.nz. We have a variety of articles for you to enjoy in this issue. Our ever popular contributor Bee Pears delves into the damsires and grandamsires of the yearlings on offer. We profile a relative newcomer to the breeding scene – John Arbuckle and also cover a variety of interesting horse management articles. In particular contributions from our major sponsors NRM and Vetpro. For our members, please note we have a new telephone number 03 339 4168 and we are now located in the HRNZ building, 135 Lincoln Road, Addington – so do call in and say hi if you are visiting HRNZ. We have launched a new online shop, which can be found at www.harnessracing.co.nz/vetpro.php. We are pleased to announce that NZSBA members can enjoy a 10% discount on all Vetpro products, purchased through the association. If you do not have a computer – give me a call and I can send you out a price list. Another great reason to join our association! For all the non-members reading this magazine, please do consider joining the NZSBA. We are a vibrant and pro-active organisation that strives to provide leadership on breeding interests through action and influence. The cost is only $89.95 per year and for that you will get a host of benefits including all issues of this magazine, discount vouchers, social functions, free confidential Tesio matings, discount on Vetpro products, advocacy on breeding issues, representation on industry bodies plus much more! Joining is easy, either call 03 339 4168, email Kiely.buttell@vodafone.co.nz or join online www.harnessracing.co.nz . To all vendors – good luck in the sales. To all buyers – happy bidding!

CHAIRMANS CORNER The 2011/12 breeding season has ended. There is understandable curiosity mixed with concern that a further drop in the number of mares bred will cause harm to our code’s ability to programme and run races. NZSBA has sent a submission to the HRNZ Board on four subjects arising out of their December meeting. (The HRNZ papers are on its website and the NZSBA full submission will be on our website after the HRNZ Board meeting on 22 February.) In 15 years the industry has become more efficient in the use of horses bred. There has been an 18 percent increase in foals that race - 60 percent of male foals now get to the races, up from 51 percent in 1995 and 46 percent of filly foals get to the races up from 38 percent in 1995. The average career starts has increased by four per horse. But the wastage is still massive. However, we still cannot meet our industry target of 11.5 starters per race. This season the average is 10.7 starters per race, with one third of meetings held averaging under 10 starters. This is poor.
NZSBA feels that one of the reasons for the situation we are in is that we have two conflicting business drivers at work: an industry funding model based upon wagering turnover which needs more horses racing and good sized fields, and a participants’ model that seeks to profit from the sale of horses to Australia which penalises horses that race in NZ and do not do well. As an industry we need to try to change the incentives to encourage owners to retain and race horses in NZ. HRNZ’s view must be to make changes to support the wagering model and at a minimum stabilising our code’s position in the NZ wagering market. Losses in domestic market share harm our overall position in the distribution of TAB profits.
It is not the time to change the race stakes distribution policy so as to make a payment to every starter as has been suggested. We understand the objective but it is a one-off change that needs more thought. Similarly NZSBA does not just now support the introduction of a breeders’ credit scheme under which a filly or mare would earn a credit for each start which Fillies and mares have followed the trend but: when bred could be paid by HRNZ as part of a • at all stages they drop out of the system stud fee. The credits would not be an incentive to 15 to 20% faster than C&G; breed, the administrative cost would be high and • one-third of F&M are never registered the scheme does not target the right issues in the with a trainer; short to medium term. The funds could be better • fewer than 50 percent of fillies get to spent elsewhere. the races: about a third of this group are bred; and In our view the decline in the number of colts • assuming that fillies and colts and geldings racing in NZ will have a greater are equally prone to injury, the impact in the short term than a decline in the conclusion must be that owners and number of foals. Given that C&G are the greater trainers in NZ quit fillies early, percentage of those that race and they race probably because of a perceived lack longer than F&Ms the effect of the Australia of opportunity. exports is multiplied in later years. The export of horses, particularly colts and geldings, will reduce field sizes more than a decline in the number of mares bred. Last season’s Australian exports were 577 male and 253 female horses. Breeders raced 50% of these horses. Export sales are an important contributor to recovering some of the breeding costs which the NZ Racing Board’s industry analysis suggests are $85 million per annum when all costs are considered. In NZ we register about 2,800 foals and run the same number of races. Australia registers about 5,000 foals and supports 15,000 races while in the US/Canada the multiplier is about seven. We are not very good in using what we have already to maintain race numbers.
BREEDERS FEBRUARY2012.indd 5
One short term option is to: target retention of the horses that are currently selling to Australia in the $10,000 range. For these owners stakes are the key. We need to be more pro-active in carding complementary sets of races encouraging evenly rated horses e.g. open nominations, handicapping adjustments including clever use of conditions such as lifetime earnings ceilings and a drop-back scheme. Stakes for these races also need to be maintained across the $5,000 to $10,000 range given that some trainers seem to think that a higher stake at metropolitan venues automatically assures that their horse will not be competitive. This is directly related to the selling imperative that drives many participants in our code. These are not easy matters to resolve. Complexity, parochialism, self interest, tradition and emotion are all woven through. NZSBA is doing its small part by making its views known. We are supporting HRNZ with the building of a model that can take all of the variables discussed above and produce various scenarios on the total available horse pool starters etc. Evidence and fact should always be a major contributor to these discussion. We can never lose sight of the importance of maintaining a high profile on integrity matters. NZSBA’s executive has re-affirmed its policy of seeking to have the winner of every race tested. We acknowledge that the RIU has changed practices and random sampling is taking place. However, as long a any race winner remains untested the opening is there for innuendo and criticism.
The pool of racing horses can be expanded by further increasing the opportunities for fillies and mares to race in their own class, i.e. maidens, 1 to 2 wins and 3 to 5 wins. They will then increase the number of times they race per season and race for longer. Changing owner/breeder and trainer perceptions on the availability of races may be the biggest challenge. However this can be achieved if the races are programmed and run. It requires a policy and programming commitment that remains in place for a number of years. Southland, Auckland and this year Canterbury clubs have found that F&M series can be well supported. The element of having a final at an increased stake seems to have attracted interest.

The other bottom line of the yearling sales
By Bee Pears
Bee is a writer and breeder. Articles and discussions on breeding can be found on her blogsite b4breeding.com, including past articles published in Breeding Matters.
A
t yearling sales time the focus is rightly on the individual yearlings and the sires. However there is much to muse over in the damsires and grandamsires of the yearlings. While the financial ‘bottom line’ of selling yearlings is about covering costs or making a profit/loss, the other bottom line of interest to breeders is the changing genetic pool of our better broodmares. I use the term “better” with some caution because there are many excellent mares whose progeny don’t appear at a yearling sale, mainly from the breeder’s choice to keep a filly, race a colt or because the individual foal had an issue. However overall our best performing families are represented at the sales much of the time and the sales remain a good way to judge what breeders and buyers perceive to be commercial and attractive. It’s also interesting to see which sires are making an early appearance as damsires. Like those before them, the genetic makeup of our new damsires will have considerable influence on the genetic pool of our mares and therefore what future stallions might have more ‘luck’ when they dip into that pool. In the past 20 years New Zealand has been a leading player in the resurgence of the Direct Scooter line through In The Pocket. We’ve also brought a ton of Tar Heel into our pedigrees, with both Holmes Hanover and In the Pocket having Tar Heel as their damsire. Falcon Seelster chipped in with Overtrick as his damsire as well as Breath O Spring close up in his sire’s pedigree.
Tar Heel
The lack of Abercrombie, Artsplace, Western Hanover and the more successful siring sons of Cam Fella in most of our maternal lines (until very recently) has given us, as breeders, a different perspective from our northern hemisphere counterparts when we are assessing potential sires for our mares. It works the other way too; our different genetic pool of mares gives North American sires a chance to access something a bit different from much of their own mare populations. In my view, this is a good thing, and the success of some of our homegrown sires like Christian Cullen, Courage Under Fire, Elsu and in future perhaps Changeover, Gotta Go Cullect and Gotta Go Cullen and others will help keep a “point of difference” to some extent in our broodmares.

Looking through the 2012 Yearling Sales Catalogue and making comparisons with catalogues and stud books from 5, 10 and 20 years ago, you can see a natural changing of the guard. Grand old names still strongly featuring as grandamsires of 2012 yearlings include Noodlum, Lordship, El Patron, Lumber Dream, Mark Lobell and Nero’s BB. Of the dominant sires that followed them, our ‘elder statesmen’ damsires Vance Hanover and Smooth Fella are represented as damsires 10 times each in the 2012 sales catalogue, and as grandamsires 34 and 27 times respectively. Game Pride appears 15 times as grandamsire only. Their producing daughters are now around 20 years old, and although a few will go on for another year or so, the names of Vance Hanover and Smooth Fella and Game Pride are shifting quickly now one column further to the right in the pedigree chart.
The enduring sires from the 1990’s Of the “newish” sires that were available 20 years ago, which ones are still making their presence felt in 2012 as a damsire and grandamsire?
We have been very loyal to Falcon Seelster, In The Pocket and Holmes Hanover over a considerable period of time and as a result a significant number of our broodmares carry ‘great old bloodlines’ relatively close up in their pedigrees.

Old timers still there
Glancing through the 1991/92 stud book there were many stallions early in their careers who have made little impact in the longer term – but also several who succeeded as sires and damsires and are already matching numbers with Vance Hanover and Smooth Fella as grandamsires. Holmes Hanover and Soky’s Atom are the key ones, of course, with New York Motoring, Butler BG and OK Bye also having significant grandamsire credits for 2012 yearlings (see table 1). Holmes Hanover is the standout, represented in the 2012 yearling sales catalogue 55 times as a damsire and 34 times as a grandamsire.

Young guns take over Of course in mid the1990s, three stallions were about to arrive which Badlands’ reputation of producing tough fillies has probably been a factor in persuading breeders and buyers to take a punt. He carries a lot of Hal would change the look of our future pedigree pages. Dale blood well back in his pedigree, and as a sire he has crossed well with In the Pocket, Falcon Seelster and Sundon were exceptional sires and over Holmes Hanover mares, In The Pocket mares and other mares with Direct the past 5-10 years they have shown up strongly as damsires too – not only Scooter and Tar Heel blood, but also with Falcon Seelster. I would think his by the sheer weight of mare numbers but also because they add genuine chances are good of clicking as a damsire with some of the new sires which class to pedigrees. Their reputation as sires grew quickly – and that meant have those influences in their maternal lines, like Art Official, Santanna Blue many of their mares which were not raced or only lightly raced were still Chip, Shadow Play and Tintin In America – and these are sires that may add some early speed as well. desirable as commercial broodmares for the yearling sales. While other breeders are trying matches that add more Direct Presidential Ball was a finer, medium sized sire who often left that sort of foal Scooter influence either through the dam or sire line - American Ideal (5), but for that very reason many of them could get up and run early, and they were quick. It’s possible that breeders may be looking for sires that can add a Mach Three (3) and Santanna Blue Chip (1). bit more physical scope and strength. The popular choice for the 34 Falcon Seelster mares in the 2012 yearling sales catalogue were sons or grandsons of In The Pocket - Christian Cullen (7), Courage Under Fire (5) and Gotta Go Cullect (2) and Gotta Go Cullen (1). Add in Mach Three (3) and Somebeachsomewhere (1), and you find that 55% of the Falcon Seelster mares in the catalogue were crossed with Direct Scooter line sires. Sundon remains a highly commercial damsire. Monarchy is the cross of choice for Sundon mares at the sales (8), but he is equalled for 2012 yearlings by newcomer Majestic Son (8).
Some of the challengers may surprise you It comes as no surprise that Christian Cullen is at the top of the next upand-coming damsires in the 2012 catalogue with 33 credits, but I was surprised to see that Badlands Hanover is level pegging with him, also the damsire of 33 yearlings (up from 28 in 2011). The handsome local rich boy and the immigrant blue collar worker are both doing a fantastic job.
Holmes Hanover Live or Die has 31 mares represented, with Art Major (6), Christian Cullen (5) and Mach Three (5) the preferred sires, and 10 other sires getting a go – which reflects his versatility as a damsire.
Of the Christian Cullen mares, 6 have yearlings by sires that are also from the Direct Scooter line – Mach Three (5), Somebeachsomewhere (1), and one by Santanna Blue Chip who has Direct Scooter in his maternal pedigree. Art Major, Bettor’s Delight, Elsu and Grinfromeartoear make up the majority of other sires for Christian Cullen mares in the catalogue.
Worth a mention are Beach Towel (9 damsire credits) and Sands A Flyin (12), a son of Beach Towel. The Mach Three-Beach Towel cross that produced Somebeachsomewhere and Sir Lincoln has encouraged breeders to send 6 of the 9 Beach Towel mares to Mach Three, and 5 of the 12 Sands A Flyin mares to Mach Three or his full brother Extreme Three. Jenna’s Beach Badlands Hanover’s siring career has had commercial ups and downs, Boy, another son of Beach Towel, has only 3 damsire credits and one of but he is now a major player as a quality broodmare sire as well as having those was sent to Mach Three. another turn in favour as a commercial sire (12 yearlings in 2012). Artsplace and Artiscape (7 each) are trying to find a niche as damsires, with Of his 33 mares in the 2012 catalogue, 9 were crossed with McArdle. It’s their mares’ sires mainly chosen from the Direct Scooter sireline. None the same cross as Le Sol and Smile With Me, but with nothing much else have gone to Badlands Hanover, a son of Western Hanover, which is a little among McArdle’s successful progeny to date, it will be interesting to see if surprising – and likewise only two Badlands mares were sent to Artsplace there is any similarity in type among those yearlings and how they perform or Art Major, a son of Artsplace. It looks like type and speed are greater in future. Of course Badlands has crossed quite well with Falcon Seelster, influences in choice than the so-called Western Hanover/Artsplace “golden sire of McArdle, and that might have formed part of the thinking here, as cross”. well as looking for earlier strength and speed.

Train Spotting
It’s never a sudden transition. From When a sire stands his first season, it is at least 8 years until one of his daughters can have a yearling at the sales, and another year at least before that foal can show ability as a racehorse. So the reputation of a stallion as a damsire takes many years to get established. Making an early appearance in the damsire column are Mach Three (4 credits in 2012, up from 2 in 2011), Bettor’s Delight (2,1), Courage Under Fire (2,3), McArdle (1,1) and Washington VC (4,4). Western Terror has one damsire credit, as does Elsu. (There are a few others, but here I am focusing on successful, commercial sires that are likely to play a bigger role in future as damsires rather than one-offs.) A few years from now, Mach Three and Bettor’s Delight dams will be much more to the fore, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see some early Art Major and Grinfromeartoear mares arriving in the catalogue they will be nicely placed with some of the newer sires available such as Jereme’s Jet and Shadow Play as well as our speedy young sires from the Direct Scooter sireline. There are also plenty of 4 and 5 year old McArdle mares around now that owners may be wanting to try as broodmares, and it will be interesting to see if he follows in his father’s footsteps and over time becomes a highly regarded damsire in spite of not producing many really top fillies to date. Thanks to people like Brian West having confidence in Courage Under Fire fillies, I’d expect his numbers of commercial damsires to grow quickly too, and his mares will be spoilt for choice with existing and incoming sires. Perhaps the most interesting damsire credits for trotters are the 5 for Muscles Yankee – these wouldn’t have been cheap mares to breed and those that haven’t raced or not raced successfully are bound to be tried as broodmares. The 5 Muscles Yankee mares are crossed to Majestic Son (2) and CR Commando (2), and Continentalman (1). Continentalman also has 5 damsire credits, and those mares are crossed to Majestic Son (2), Sundon (1), Monarchy (1) and Brylin Boyz (1), but Continentalman doesn’t carry the same commercial aura as Muscles Yankee so he will need to develop his reputation the hard way if he is to grow in numbers as a top trotting damsire.

In The Pocket would have sneaked in last year with two as a sire, but this year he is represented only as a damsire and grandamsire. It was technically feasible that Holmes Hanover could have been represented as a sire also via frozen semen, but the last Holmes Hanover yearling through the sales was in 2010 Lot 447 on Christchurch’s third day, his sole representative. So Holmes Hanover also only appears as a damsire and grandamsire. For those who like trainspotting, the yearling sales are a great hunting ground. If horses are bred on very similar crosses, will they be a similar type? Or are there elements in the pedigree that make us go “Oh I see what they are trying!!” Table 3 shows the lots with the same sire, damsire and grandamsire.
In this article I’ve just focused on overall trends and the shifts that may have most impact on our future breeding stock. What I haven’t covered are some interesting ‘one-off” pedigrees where breeders are trying something different, perhaps inbreeding or the Rasmussen Factor or where imported mares are trying to establish a Downunder family, or where a three quarter brother or sister to a well known horse has been bred. I’m not aware of the rationale behind specific breeding decisions for yearling sales, so I may well be missing some important reasons why a sire is being favoured for a particular damsire. I would be very interested to find out – and happy for anyone to share thoughts in general or describe their specific cases through my blog at b4breeding.com.

Styx On The Beach
By Peter Wharton
New South Wales entrepreneur and harness racing benefactor Emilio Rosati is a great supporter of the yearling sales series. The Italian-born Sydney-based construction company owner has been an active buyer at sales in Melbourne, Sydney, Christchurch and Auckland for many years, and even ‘dabbled’ in North America, topping the Black Book Sale at Harrisburg in 2009 when he shelled out $300,000 for the Rocknroll Hanover filly Emilios Stride.

• she has the cross of 2 world champions
He has topped the New Zealand sales on a number of occasions and though he has yet to taste any significant success with his Kiwi purchases, he retains an unwavering belief in the NZ product.
• she is the 2nd foal from a Christian Cullen mare
“I will most likely be attending the sales in Christchurch and Auckland next month. There’s a couple at the Karaka sale that I really like,” Rosati said.

• she is a must for future broodmare buyers
That belief is being fuelled by a pair of untried Christian Cullen youngsters currently in the yard of record-breaking Sydney mentor Luke McCarthy. One is Mink Stride, a half-brother to the 2004 Franklin Cup winner Attorney General (1:48.4), out of the Camluck mare Classic Blue Jeans, which was the top-priced colt at last year’s Australasian Classic Sale at $135,000. “He’s a lovely colt and is shaping up as if he could be anything,” Rosati said. The other two-year-old, Cracka Stride, for which Rosati shelled out $130,000 at the Premier Sale, broke in beautifully according to Rosati, was gelded and is now back in work. He’s a brother to the Group 1 winning filly Rona Lorraine and from the family of standouts Bettor’s Strike, Bella’s Boy and Trident. Rosati believes NZ’s maternal families and the presentation of their yearlings are superior to their Australian counterparts. “I think Australia sold all their best mares to NZ years ago,” he said. “The New Zealanders are a lot more professional in preparing their yearlings. Ninety-five percent of their horses are presented in a fantastic manner.”
12
Excell Stride Presentation Passion Stride, a Presidential Ball colt out of Courage Under Fire’s sister Erin Brockovich, has been the pick of the flamboyant ownerbreeder’s New Zealand sales purchases so far. He’s won nine – including seven at Tabcorp Park Menangle -- of his 18 starts and almost $50,000 in stakes and holds a mark of 1:53.5. Lenola Stride and Amore Stride, which topped the NZ Premier Sale at Christchurch in 2009 and 2010 respectively, have also both emerged successful in Australia. A $150,000 buy, Lenola Stride (Christian CullenChampagne Princess) won at her first two attempts as a three-year-old including a 1:56.8 effort at Menangle. Meanwhile, the chestnut Amore Stride, a Love You half-brother to Earl Of Mot and a $140,000 yearling, took out last year’s Redwood Consolation at Maryborough and has been three times placed from seven starts for Mark Purdon
Consolation at Maryborough and has been three times placed from seven starts for Mark Purdon. Both look capable of reaching far greater heights. What are Rosati’s criteria for choosing a yearling? “It’s paramount that there’s no more than three mares on a catalogue page,” Rosati stated. “If there’s four or more dams on a page then I’ll put a line through it.” He said the age of the dam of a yearling is important, but he would not rule out a well-bred yearling solely because it’s dam was too old! “I like horses with a strong chest and hind quarters which are nice walkers.” Rosati said he is not opposed to buying fillies. “I don’t mind buying fillies. If she’s a good sort I’ll chase her,” Rosati said.

From sale ring to racetrack – Feeding during the training transition Most Standardbreds destined for the racetrack will endure a short but intense period of yearling preperation before entering training as young as 18 months of age, with many racing in their two-year-old year. Feeding these young horses is a challenge because nutrients must be supplied to cater for both growth and exercise. Additionally, little research has been done to quantify the nutrient requirements of horses this age, particularly during the transition period from untrained yearling to intensely exercised two-year-old. Ideally the yearling Standardbred should have been on a sound nutritional program from birth, giving it the best opportunity to develop a strong skeleton, able to withstand the rigors of training. If purchased at a yearling sale, the animal will likely have been on a high plane of nutrition for several months, so it is important to taper off the energy intake if the yearling is going to be turned out for some time before pre-training. Yearlings fresh from the sales can be maintained on good quality forage (1-1.5% of body weight) including good pasture, and a feed formulated for breeding and growing horses such as NRM Assett or Evolve. If the yearling is a ‘good-doer’ then cutting back the grain concentrate and feeding a balancer such as NRM Equine Balancer at 800 grams per day is a good approach to keep the kilos down, while still providing essential nutrition. As yearlings leave the breeding farm environment and enter training, major changes occur in their skeletons. Much of this change is due to alterations in housing and exercise, but nutrition may also play a role. A recent study by Kentucky Equine Research reported significant decreases in bone mineral density during the first two months of pre-training in rising two-year olds. This was followed by an increase in bone density that continued through the duration of the study. The yearlings entered training (day 0) in late autumn on a farm where regular turnout paddocks were available. The horses were confined in boxes for approximately 6 hours per day. The training intensity at this time was low, consisting of 15-20 minutes per day trotting in a paddock. One month into the study (day 28), the horses were moved to a racetrack training centre where little or no turnout was available. For the remainder of the study the horses were confined in boxes for approximately 23 hours per day. Between days 28-84, the horses (now 2-yearolds) were lightly exercised, and from day 84112 training intensity increased. From this time period onwards, horses were kept at an intense level of training. These horses were consuming a commercial fortified feed and grass/grass hay throughout the study.
14
Breeding Matters February 2012
BREEDERS FEBRUARY2012.indd 14
Bone mineral content (BMC) dropped from day 28 until day 84 when the horses were confined to stalls with only light exercise. By day 84, BMC was significantly lower than day 0 (Figure 1). When training intensity increased in the spring, BMC increased to levels that were not different from pretraining. Osteocalcin is a protein produced by the osteoblasts in bone and is an accepted marker of bone formation. Plasma osteocalcin levels dropped slightly from day 0-84 when the horses were confined and in light training. Levels increased from day 84-112 when the horses began intense exercise, suggesting an increase in bone formation. The results showed how confinement and changes in exercise intensity can affect bone mineralisation and point very clearly to the importance of some turn out for racehorses in training.
Figure 1. Bone mineral content of two year olds in training Feeding Programs for Two-Year-Olds Once the yearling has entered the training environment, a real concern for trainers is how differently to feed rising two-year-olds compared with older horses in the stable. A typical feeding program for an adult harness horse in race training consists of good quality forage (grass and/or lucerne hay, chaff, pasture turn out if available), grain/commercial concentrate and supplements if necessary. Forage must be fed at a minimum of 1% body weight per day – that is a minimum of about 4-5kg hay per day. The energy and majority of the nutrients are provided by grain and/or a commercial grain concentrate. Commercial concentrate feeds are usually fully fortified to contain all the energy, protein, minerals and vitamins the horse needs provided it is fed at the recommended amount (usually about 4-8kg per day) and is fed alongside good quality forage. Some commercial racing feeds are formulated so that you can add your own grain (oats/barley/maize) to top up the energy intake. Rising two year olds will require more protein, calcium, phosphorus and trace minerals than mature horses because they are growing as well as working. If we look at an example – An adult Standardbred in race training and his rising two year old stable mate in moderate work. Both horses are fed 5 kg of high quality grass/lucerne mixed hay and a 13.0% protein commercial grain mix that supplies 13 MJ DE/kg (NRM Race13). The adult racehorse would require 6 kg of grain per day to meet its energy requirement, while the two-year-old requires 5 kg/day.

Advertorial:
Fourflax Flax Seed Oil – What is it, where does it come from & what does it do? Flax Seed Oil is the richest natural source of Omega 3, an Essential Fatty Acid (EFA) with anti-inflammatory properties. Called ‘essential’ because it cannot be produced by the body, Omega 3 is a vital nutrient that must be obtained either in the feed or in the form of a supplement. A major ingredient in many horse feeds is typically grain, and whilst grains are an excellent source of many nutrients, they also contain high proportions of another EFA, Omega 6. Unfortunately too much Omega 6 in the diet can lead to an imbalance in the Omega 3:6 ratio, which can cause inflammatory disorders such as joint problems, skin irritations and allergies due to a deficiency in Omega 3. These conditions can be alleviated and prevented by supplementing the feed with Fourflax Equine Flax Seed Oil. Fourflax Flax Seed Oils are extracted from Linseed seed grown locally in Canterbury, and cold-pressed in Ashburton. Cold-pressing is regarded as the best method of extracting quality oil from the seed. Our Flax Seed Oils are processed in exactly the same way as food grade oils, and meet food grade standards, so you can be assured you are feeding your horses a pure, high quality oil. With its naturally anti-inflammatory properties, Fourflax Flax Seed Oil has numerous benefits. Not only will the oil nourish the coat and hair from within, giving it an unbeatable shine, the Omega 3 will also help with a whole host of other conditions. Allergies, itchy or flakey skin, dandruff,
16
joint problems, lack of mobility, cracked hooves and laminitis to name a few can all be treated with a daily feed of Flax Seed Oil. As little as 30ml per day for a pony or yearling is recommended, increasing proportionally depending on the size of the horse. This will cover general health and maintenance, as well as giving that incredibly shiny coat! Results should be seen within 10-14 days of first feeding, if not sooner. Flax Seed Oil can also be used as a source of energy for race horses or endurance events, and one cup of oil provides as much energy as four cups of grain! As the oil is 100% fat, horses are able to metabolise it extremely well…and because it is free of sugar and starch, it can help to prevent fizzing up! What’s more, due to the anti-inflammatory nature of the Omega 3, cramps and tying up are prevented as inflammation and swelling of the muscles are soothed from within, and the breakdown of lactic acid is increased. And finally, Flax Seed Oil is an ideal supplement for horse breeders. Recent studies from the US have suggested that supplementing a stallions diet with Omega 3 Essential Fatty Acids can help to increase sperm concentration. Flax Seed Oil really is an all-round winner with heaps of benefits, whether you are a recreational rider, racehorse trainer or stud farm owner! Call us today to discuss your requirements and for our latest pricing options.

before going on to race successfully in Western Australia, where he recorded multiple wins.
Now retired from education, Trevor keeps around eight or nine horses on his 20 acre property at Aylesbury, west of Christchurch. His four broodmares all have winning credentials and are bred carefully, aiming for the yearling sales. This season Everlaughing Life has a Changeover colt at foot, I’m Easy has a Live or Die filly, and Samantha Sunrise has a Santanna Blue Chip colt. Trevor’s fourth mare, Samantha Swift, lost her colt foal.
Trevor says that it is always a thrill to breed and produce a horse that goes well. At the moment Hey Hardy (out of Enjoy the Thrill) in Wayne Adams stable looks promising and might win a race or two.

Without wanting to open a can of worms that has many angles on the argument, one does have to wonder how that affects the overall average at the sales. Naturally a breeder wants to give their mare every chance at stud and to do that you want to send them to a proven stallion. Supply and demand is the name of the game. However, is it worth taking a chance on a promising new stallion to be a part of a more select group of yearlings on offer? No doubt many of us will be seeing pedigrees in our sleep after hours of pouring over the bloodlines and black type, to purchasing a horse ourselves, or to study the different crosses and breeding fashions on offer to us now.
to the tragic quake in February of last year. Will that affect their decision to be here, or will it merely mean phone bidding for them and make no difference? There are many questions this year to be answered. Once again the sales are dominated by proven sires, with all three days seeing Mach Three (70 entries), Christian Cullen (55 entries) Art Major (53 entries), and Bettors Delight, (39 entries) offering many options for fans to take home their progeny.
The downside to limiting the mares of course would probably mean an increase in stud fee, with the exclusivity of your foal garnering a potentially higher return through the ring. I can see positives and negatives to this. The studs are entitled to make hay while the sun shines of course, and there probably is a middle ground somewhere that may work. Then comes the topic of line breeding. How close is too close? At the moment the fashion in the northern hemisphere is to breed as close as possible, which may not have an effect today or tomorrow for us, but as most of our bloodlines come from the United States and Canada through stallions, we will eventually see here that our outcross breeding options are shrinking.
In the breeding season resulting in this season’s yearlings those sires were extremely popular. Of the 2,748 live foals bred in 2008/09, 239 were by Thankfully here we have had the blessing of Bettors Delight; 122 by Christian Cullen; 162 by Falcon Seelster as an outcross option. Mach Three and 95 were by Art Major.
Dragon Again has presented another interesting outcross option through his son Sutter Hanover here in Australasia. I certainly hope in the future we will continue to have options like these guys on offer through the pedigree. With all that being said, I guess the biggest worry at the moment is not how we breed them, that’s probably something to ponder later on. But, how do we get people to breed horses again? I’d very interested in working on a promotion or scheme with the NZSBA, or throwing around some ideas to entice new breeders to the game or getting public syndication rolling again to the newcomer who finds it all too intimidating to do by themselves. I really think that is the way forward. This is an exciting time of year for us all though. I personally look forward to the Young Guns series and first two-year-old races for the year when the new stallions on the block have a chance to shine. For those of us who have taken a punt on a new sire it can be quite a nerve wrecking time, but hey, isn’t that why we love this sport? The beautiful, and at times painful, uncertainty of it all?! I am also looking forward to getting out and about through some of the yearling parades this year. It can become quite frustrating only seeing horses in that little black box in the studio or living room here in Wellington!. I always wonder if I am staring at a future superstar, I would like to wish everyone the very best of luck for the sales. From the vendors to the studs, and the preparers who spend hours making babies into buyer’s dreams. To everyone with a horse in the sales this year, and to those who bred again this season, I wish you all the very best with your investments. Thank you for continuing to support our industry because without the risks you take, we would not have a sport left to fight for. I thank you all for the important role you play in the wonderful world of harness racing.

or some racehorse breeders, success or failure is defined within a five minute time slot at the annual yearling sales. The preparation for that five minutes is all-important. It’s a matter of years during which significant expenses are incurred. Firstly, the all-important decisions around breeding need to be made. Which sires are “flavour of the month” – and will still hold their position come sale day in around two-and-a-half years time? Who are the up and coming sires? Which sire will mate best with a particular mare? After that key decision is taken, there’s the process of breeding the mare; scanning to make sure that conception has been achieved, and to make sure that she is carrying only one foal. Then
comes the eleven months of waiting and hoping for a successful foaling. When the mare gets close to foaling she may be sent either back to the stud or to a broodmare farm, where she will receive 24-hour monitoring and the best of care, to ensure the safe arrival of what is often a very expensive foal. Of course foaling doesn’t always go according to plan, and it’s not just an economic tragedy when things go wrong. Horse owners are particularly attached to their mares, and losing a mare or foal is a heartbreak. Experienced breeders generally have their own tried and true system for preparing youngstock for the sale. Julie Davie, of Tuapeka Lodge based close to Lawrence comments that they like to keep their young horses in a natural environment.
“They learn to lead beside their Mums,” she says. “Before they are weaned they have had their feet done two or three times. After weaning they stay i in good, grassy, sheltered paddocks with plenty of hay for the winter, and typically we would start more intensive sale preparation about the first week of November – about 12 weeks out from the sale.” In the past the young horses have been transported to Julie’s property, however this year they are staying on the home farm. They are covered, groomed, taught to lead, and fed simple, plain feeds – chaff, crushed barley, and crushed linseed, all depending on the requirements of the individual horse. “We are very careful not to overdo them. They have good temperaments and they’re well disciplined,” says Julie. “We tend to stick with a good routine we have developed through the years.” Alongside the preparation of the yearlings runs the marketing effort. Many studs have websites to promote their sale stock, and alongside the agents, there are prospective buyers to host on-farm. The ‘Southern Bred, Southern Reared’ group tour of sale prospects in the lower South Island is a popular means for trainers and prospective purchasers to visit the horses on their home properties enjoying the hospitality along the way. There are similar tours in other centres such as Christchurch and the North Island. Dan Cummings comments that the view of the horse is all important, and it’s a good way for people to have a look around at what’s available.

stablished Templeton retailer John Arbuckle and Wellington Accountant John Fokerd, President of the Wellington Racing Club, have a potential sale topper in Lover of Art, Lot 9 at the Australasian Classic Yearling Sale at Karaka in South Eastern Auckland on March 8. The royally bred colt, prepared by Christchurch trainer Graham Court of Terror to Love fame, is described as “long barreled with plenty of scope with class ‘‘by Arbuckle, a self made businessman who “simply loves’’ his harness racing involvement as a diversion from his involved business interests. Getting away to fishing batches at Okuru in South Westland and Moeraki on the North Otago Coast, also helps him to unwind. Lover of Art is a son of USA Hall of Fame immortal and son of Mach Three Somebeachsomewhere (p3, 1:46.8) and the Artsplace mare Art Lover, a daughter of none other than former ace filly Under Cover Lover whose dam Vain Franco is

the grand dam of standout mare Bettor Cover Buyer interest in Lover of Art might be higher Lover, twice conqueror of 2011 NZ Harness than even expected because of the paucity of stock in New Zealand by his sire. Apparently Horse of the Year Carabella. Bettor Cover Lover, prepared by Brent Mangos only one mare got in foal to him in New Zealand and Hayden Cullen, recovered from a low point this breeding season, Arbuckle said. He has two life threatening Australian foot injury to lower others by the sire that was represented by only Carabella’s colours in the Gr 1 Queen of Hearts at five foals in New Zealand last season, making his Alexandra Park in December, clearly outstaying stock in keen demand. last season’s NZ Harness Horse of the Year with Arbuckle, of Newton’s Road, Templeton in Canterbury, solely conducts his breeding an undeniable late charge. The sale colt’s grand dam Under Cover Lover (p3, activities on an irrigated 20 acre property that is 1:51.8, USA) gained 12 wins and 11 placing’s in post and rail fenced to ensure safety of almost 20 New Zealand and was undisputed champion broodmares. He has enjoyed 100 percent foaling success with his matrons over the last two years. filly at two and three. She won three races in USA and was second in the coveted Fan Hanover Stakes, the Nadia Lobell Stakes and the American National Final. She was NZ 3yo Filly of the Year and 4yo NZ Pacing Mare of the Year. Her major wins included the NSW Oaks, Oceania Eldorado Final, Hydroflow Fillies Final, Great Northern Oaks, NZ Oaks and the NZ Sires Stakes Final for 3YO fillies. Under Cover Lover ranks among the greatest ever New Zealand second season fillies. By any standards she would be right up with the best that include Hilarious Guest, Robin Dundee, Tigerish, Mainland Banner, Molly Darling, One Dream, Carabella and De Lovely.
“My mares never leave the property. All artificial insemination is done on the farm where mares are settled and contented. I haven’t got one horse from a weanling to a three year old that isn’t on the market,’’ he said. Continued on page 26

JEREME’s JET: the GOLDEN CROSS 2 yearling colts by Jereme’s Jet out of mares by Courage Under Fire. Genetics assures David this can become a very successful future GOLDEN CROSS. JEREME’S JET (‘JJ’) GOLDEN CROSS Some of the reasons sire JJ will cross brilliantly over mares by Courage Under Fire, include the wonderful reverse sex of Sampson Hanover (who won 20 races on end) in mid pedigree; the fact JJ and Vance Hanover (sire of dam of CUF) are from same dam’s family; the relationship of Adios Butler and his sister, and Light Brigade and his sister; the reverse sexed Albatross; and more.

JEREME’S JET (‘JJ’) SIRES TOP NZ COLT To date JJ has sired 5 NZ colts who have qualified as early 2-year-olds, including You’renotthebossofme (1.58.7 Q), George Jetson (2.00.5 Q) and Classiemahon. Classiemahon has been unbeaten in 4 trials, with 1 in 2.00 and another with last half in 57. He finished a close 2nd in his first race start. His trainer Tony Stratford says: “Classiemahon is the best young horse I’ve had”. This is high praise, given Tony last season trained Sapling Stakes winner Monaghan and Kindergarten winner and SS final runner up Le Sol. TWO PHYSICALLY CORRECT COLTS Two yearling colts by Jereme’s Jet are to be offered by David W Phillips (‘David’) through his company Hambletonian Limited at the PGG Auckland Sales on Thursday 8 March 2012, as LOTS 14 (ARK) and 101 (IN IT TO WIN IT). They are physically the equal of any colts David has ever bred, and he has bred and conceived some great racehorses. David at his small boutique Pokeno farm bred Sly Flyin ($900,000+), who was 2-year-old of his year, and went onto FFA class; and Immortal Quest $440,000 and 1.50(f); Vladimir The Great and conceived Eyecatcher Courage $200,000+ and SS final winner. David also bred at Pokeno the dams of both the 2011 Pacing (Im Themightyquinn) and Trotting (I Can Doosit) Inter-Dom FINAL winners. Over 65% of all live foals bred or conceived by David in Pokeno over the past 15 years, Lot 101 go on to become racewinners. Around 33% of all live foals bred or conceived there by INITTOWINIT David become $100,000+ winners.

GENETIC CORRECTNESS Gregor Mendal, Federico Tesio and NZ man Harold Hampton are icons in genetic studies. David has applied thousands of hours to genetic studies of harness horses. David imported to NZ both sire and dam of Monkey King ($3 million+ won). David also advised on genetics to create NZ’s richest pacer, and also for Smiling Shard ($1 million+ won). Be assured, correct genetic matching has created these two yearling colts. This correct genetic background could win you BIG $. INSPECTION These 2 yearling colts can be inspected by appointment at Tupelo Park, with Sarah Crawford, who is near Scott Reserve, Morrinsville (by Jill Coppin’s property). Continued on from 24 All weanlings are broken in by Terry Chmiel, and then sent to Graham Court to educate and prepare for sale’, he added. “We are well set up with proper servicing facilities and post and rail fences. Mares and young stock are unlikely to be injured. No stock is worked for training purposes on the property.’’ Arbuckle does not operate as an agistment farm. Only two or three outside horses are grazed there for friends and close associates. Arbuckle solely supports fresh chilled semen. He is not a fan of using frozen - as the Mares need to go to an outside stud to be served. As a rule, he does not send stock to yearling sales, only those owned in partnership with John Fokerd. “My operation is dedicated solely to breeding. Dave Senior is an excellent vet who does all work of a clinical nature related to breeding activities. All that is done at home to guarantee mares are relaxed and fertile.’’ Arbuckle, in his early 60s, said he was learning every day, and was a fan of Somebeachsomewhere who won 14 of his 15 lifetime starts.. Valuable matron Art Lover has been served by Rock N Roll Hanover. ”We have a Mach Three weanling filly from Art Lover and have 20 mares with foals to be weaned on the property…All mares had foaled by the end of last year,’’ he said recently. Nineteen of his 20 mares had proved in foal by early January.
“No pressure is put on my broodmares and the vast majority of them react favorably to that policy and procedure,’’ he explained.
Exceptional Art, a promising 2yo filly by Mach Three from Try Me Franco, was sold in early January and was expected to qualify quickly. Fokerd and Arbuckle sold Queen of Art, the now qualified 3yo Christian Cullen filly from Try Me Franco, to clients of Brent Mangos and his Pukekohe co trainer Hayden Cullen. Queen of Art was sold to the Karnup Pty Syndicate at the 2010 Premier Yearling Sales in Christchurch. She qualified when second (beaten a head) at Pukekohe in 2:40.3 (mile rate of 2:05.8) over 2050m (mobile) on August 30 last year. She was un-raced as at January 1 this year. Art Connoisseur (Falcon Seelster-Classic Art, Borntobeanartist (Artsplace-Born to be Queen) and Roberty Bob (McArdle-Ides of May) have been recent winners from Arbuckle mares. John Arbuckle prefers to stay away from the limelight of racing. Instead he enjoys watching racing on television. Such were the wonders of modern technology, he could spend many quiet hours on his Laptop computer at Moeraki and Okuru, attending to matters associated with his vast business of Payless Stock Liquidators.
His Okuru recreational facility includes a home near an 18 metre whitebait stand. He enjoyed once in a lifetime experiences with prolific catches of the delicacy there this past season. “Modern technology gets better and better all the time. My Okuru residence has a satellite disc and it is just as if I was living in Christchurch in a business sense.’’ He has hopes for the former Graham Court trained grey son of Christian Cullen in Charles Bronson as a sire. One of his best looking colts on the property is by the sire that had 10 bookings over the past season. Arbuckles, an earlier successful retail business interest of retail chain stores, was sold by him to a public company seven years ago. John Arbuckle has never been one to blow his own trumpet or promote his business interests unduly. Instead he subscribes to the theory that good products and concepts will promote themselves without any fuss or fanfare. All indications are he is methodically plotting the same passage of success with his horses as he has done in his business interests.
“This whole operation is an absolutely absorbing hobby for me…It is a lot of fun. When in Christchurch I love harrowing and topping paddocks, shifting irrigation, starting most mornings about 6.00am” Arbuckle will offer two quality lots at the Christchurch Premier sale on March 5 and 6 in Art Legend, a son of Mach Three and In The Stars (Life Sign-Bella Chip) and Awesome Art, a daughter of Art Major and Try Me Franco (by Holmes Hanover). The colt from In The Stars belongs to the celebrated Orbell branch of the established Maud source that has produced Awesome Armbro (1:49.8), Lento (13 wins), Whanau (Gr 1), Bettors Strike (1:57.7 and $385,000, incl Victoria Cup), Bella’s Boy (1:52) and Bellas Chip (1:52). Awesome Art belongs to the branch of the stout Miss Poole taproot that produced the filly’s distinguished third dam Tempest Tiger (NZ Messenger), the 1995-96 NZ Broodmare of the Year.

Colostrum supplementation in Mature Horses needing health support By Tina Thorowgood
I
t it is widely known that colostrum is a vital commodity that passes from the mare to the foal and without it in the first few hours after birth the foal is unlikely to survive. The primary cause of foal mortality is due to partial or complete failure of passive transfer (FPT) of immunity contained in the colostrum – in a study involving some 2,092 horses and ponies it was found that some 416 or 20% of these animals suffered from some type of immunological disorder . However it has now been researched that supplementation of bovine colostrum in mature horses has major benefits, especially in horses in need of assistance to recover from immune lowering events. Colostrum contains many bio active substances that have been shown to prevent disease and promote overall good health. The bioactive substances in colostrum include antibodies, immune factors, growth factors peptides, bioactive proteins, prebiotics, vitamins , minerals and antioxidants. Antibodies and immune factors fight and destroy disease causing agents. The gut of the horse is where much of the negative effects of stress, illness, antibiotic administration, exertion and trauma are manifested . Colostrum contains a number of substances which help to optimise gut health :
G
rowth factors such as Transforming Growth Factor(TGF) and Epidermal Growth Factor(EGF). These growth factors stimulate growth and maturation of cells and therefore tissue repair and wound healing, and as such are important in recovery from gastrointestinal damage from NSAIDS. Colostrum’s growth factor IGF helps to maintain normal blood-sugar levels, and also support health of the lining of the gastro intestinal tract. Colostrum also supplies specific growth factors that help muscular-skeletal repair, assist in formation and repair of connective tissue, bone, and cartilage; assist in wound healing, and help repair DNA and RNA.
O
f particular benefit to horses is bovine colostrum’s immune factors. The principle immune factors identified and studied in bovine colostrum are: Lactoferrin, Transferrin, Cytokines, Proline-Rich polypeptides (PRP,) Lysozymes, Lactoperoxidase, and Transfer Factor. These help to ward off disease – especially helpful for an animal worn down by the health limiting occurrences mentioned above.
C
olostrum also contains relatively high amounts of oligosaccharides which act as prebiotics enhancing beneficial bacteria in the gut, and assisting the horse to digest the feed, a necessary process for recovery.
I
mmunoglobulins provide a defense against viral infection, bacterial infection, allergies, fungus, and yeast. Colostrum provides five types of immunoglobins: IgA, IgD, IgG, IgE, and IgM., which control and modulate the body’s two principle immune defense systems: humoral and cellular. This ability to modulate and establish homeostasis of the immune system is very important because the already stimulated immune system (as in the cases of autoimmune disease, or allergic reactions) do not need more stimulation; likewise a weak immune system needs to be stimulated to fight the antigens. They have been shown to help the body inhibit the binding of pathogenic invaders to the gastrointestinal tract.

olostrum provides a substantive source of antioxidants- Glutathione being the most significant anti-oxidant with its important role to neutralise the negative effects of free radicals. Unchecked these free radicals cause tissue and cellular damage and potential breakdown of health. In a normal healthy horse these are provided for in the normal diet or one supplemented with Vitamin E, but in the sick or health challenged horse the supplementation of antioxidants is extremely important. Antioxidants are effective in reducing the effects of fatigue .
C
olostrum may also have benefits for the healthy performance horse. From studies in humans it has been shown to improve performance in athletes and also in recovery from exertive performance .
Vetpro’s new product Recovery Boost combines all the above benefits of colostrum with additional ingredients to assist the horse to a full and speedy recovery. It has L Glutamine, an amino acid critical for proper functioning of the digestive system, immune system, and skeletal muscle. It has been shown that in times of stress and illness, the levels of L glutamine drop. Other important ingredients are Vitamin C another antioxidant that also helps to create a positive immune response and that is combined with B vitamins whose natural production within the gut is lowered and therefore will limit osmoregulation ( dehydration ofPowered cells) and optimal by liver function.

Alexis is Ladyship Mile Material By Peter Wharton Glenferrie Alexis, which has been dubbed the ‘Cups Queen’ after a string of successes on the rich Victorian Country Cups circuit this season, is regarded as one of the best young mares in the country. In the space of six weeks between October 31 and January 8 she annexed the Group 2 $60,000 Horsham Pacing Cup and the Listed $25,000 Yarra Valley Pacing Cup and $25,000 Maryborough Gold Cup and won her way back to a M6 mark. Noted for her big finishing kick, Glenferrie Alexis will be one of the leading fancies for the $200,000 Group 1 NSW Ladyship Mile at Tabcorp Park Menangle on March 3. Glenferrie Alexis, which was bred in New Zealand by Gold Coast property developer Greg Brodie and is raced by big spending Melbourne owner-breeder Peter Chambers, has a good deal more in her favour on the score of blood than most. The winner of 19 races and $266,833, Glenferrie Alexis is a mare by the In The Pocket horse Courage Under Fire. Courage Under Fire has been most successful in NZ. His stock includes Franco Jamar and Lanercost, rated two of the most exciting pacers in Australia today, and the fillies Courageous Annie, Lancome and Secret Potion. Glenferrie Alexis is out of Alegria, by the American bred sire Caprock (son of Jate Lobell) from Miesque, a mare by Plat du Jour from Nicky Trae, by Jersey Hanover and tracing to Entice, founder of a very strong family headed up by the 1951 Inter Dominion champion Vedette. Interestingly, Courage Under Fire himself belongs to the same tribe being five times removed from Entice. The Courage Under Fire/No Nukes cross has produced a host of top performers including the Victoria Derby winner Courage To Rule, Rowan Direct (Vic. 4&5YO Ch’ship), Smolda 1:54.3, NZ’s current top three-year-old colt, Flak Jacket (NZ Kindergarten Stakes) and Vienna Bromac 1:54.

Besides Glenferrie Alexis, Alegria is also the dam of Jackaroozy 2:01.3 (4 wins to date and $32,587) and the recent Forbury Park three-year-old winner Alex, both to the cover of Courage Under Fire. Alegria was a sister to a top ranking pacer in Mac De Stroyer 1:49.8, winner of 11 races and $154,658, and a half-sister to Il Informed 1:58.3 (6 wins and $80,424), their dam, Miesque, being a half-sister to four winners including the Moonee Valley winner Jessica Bee.
a trotter who threw five winners including a brilliant pacer in Mount Cole and a useful trotter in Ima Rowan. Ima Rowan won nine races headed up by the 1985 Central Victorian Trotting Championship. The Queen Wrack branch of Entice’s family, to whom Glenferrie Alexis belongs, has also been responsible for top pacers such as Advance Attack, Adios Dream and Swift Judge, and class trotters in Sundon’s Way, Beat The Monarch, Idid It Myway, Dolly Would and Christine Maree.

Can herbs help with behavioural problems? Christine King BVSc, MACVSc, MVetClinStud
I
n a word, yes. But with a couple of important ‘however’ We expect an awful lot from horses at times, particularly young horses. For example, we want young horses to be well behaved in strange environments and with new experiences; and we want mares and stallions to be even tempered and compliant during the breeding season, when their attention and their physiology are otherwise engaged. These are challenging situations even for humans! While breeding, training, maturity, and diet are all important in determining the personality of the horse and how he copes with the various stresses of life, we’re still left with the inconvenient fact that some of the best performance horses are also the most highly strung or the most quirky. Here is where behaviour-modifying herbs can be a real asset. As a training aid, anxiety-relieving herbs can help the young, inexperienced, or highly sensitive horse focus better and thus learn faster and adapt more quickly to the unavoidable stresses of his job. These herbs can also be a great help for shoeing, clipping, veterinary procedures, and other occasional events that often cause anxiety in horses. There are many herbs that have an effect on brain chemistry. If you’re finding that a bit hard to swallow, then consider the effects of coffee, cocoa/chocolate, and tobacco. All three are simple plant products, and all three affect our alertness, mood, and behaviour in some way. The list of herbs that can help relieve anxiety is surprisingly long. The ones most commonly used in humans and animals are listed in the table below. All of these herbs are fairly safe at the commonly used dosages, although there are some precautions that we need to bear in mind when using these herbs in horses:
St Johns Wort
32
Skullcap
1
. Overdose may cause drowsiness and unsteadiness, which may lead to injury. With the right dose, the effect should be a horse that is calm yet alert, paying attention and responding reasonably to what’s going on around him. It’s better to use too little at the outset and have to give a bit more than it is to start out with too high a dose.
2
. Several of these herbs affect brain chemistry in similar ways— along the same biochemical pathways or using the same cell receptors—so it is best to use a product that contains only a few well-chosen herbs. (Your very own BetaVet, a NZ company, makes two such products for horses.) Many of the products on the market for animals have been formulated using the kitchen-sink approach, where everything that might help is thrown in. Not only does that approach have the potential to dilute the effect of the most useful herbs, it can also make overdose more likely if several of the constituent herbs act on the brain via similar pathways/receptors.
3
. Just like sedative drugs, these herbs are far more effective when given before the horse gets excited. You’ll be able to use lower doses when you give the herb/s in advance of an event you know or anticipate will be stressful to that individual horse. But once the horse is wound up, sometimes no amount of herb or drug is sufficient to calm the horse without also causing unsteadiness.
4
. Most of these herbs are metabolised by the liver, so there is always some potential for interaction or interference with other medications. Check with your vet before giving a herbal product if the horse is already on medication of some sort. Also, some of these herbs may cause liver problems if given at high doses for weeks or months on end. Respect the power of these herbs as you do other medications.

Commonly used calming herbs * adaptogens (various ginsengs, rhodiola, ashwagandha, etc.) * California poppy * chamomile * hops (yes, that’s right...beer can be therapeutic ) * kava kava * lemon balm * passion flower * skullcap * St John’s wort * valerian
Hops In short, these herbs can be a great help, but don’t overdose and don’t overuse them. They are only for occasional or short-term use. They are not a substitute for good breeding and good training, although with careful use they can help the horse adjust faster to stressful things. As a nice side-benefit, these herbs may also help lower the risk for stomach ulcers, stress-induced colic, injury caused by mistakes made under pressure, fighting among horses, stable vices, and other physical and behavioural signs of stress. ****************************************************************************** Copyright ©2012. Perth meetings
M
Two meetings being held in Perth during the currency of the 2012 Inter Dominion championships seem certain to have far reaching ramifications for the Breeding industry in Australia. Harness Racing Australia will conduct their mid-season meeting on March 1 and among the topics to be discussed by State delegates will be the proposed National Breeding Credit Scheme for mares and fillies. Meanwhile, the annual meeting of the Australian Standardbred Breeders Association is scheduled for March 2 and agenda items include the HRA Breeding Survey, fillies and mares races and election of office-bearerrs.
Race sponsorships Harness Breeders Victoria’s commitment to enhancing racing opportunities for mares and fillies through the sponsorship of feature events at Tabcorp Park Melton and provincial tracks continues to bear fruit. Now in the second year of a new two-year $55,000 sponsorship deal with Harness Racing Victoria, the HBV sponsored series has produced keen, exciting racing and has been contested by most of the top mares in the country. The winners of the first five legs of the 2011/12 series run at Melton are: Make Mine Cullen (Tailamade Lombo); Broadways Best (Golden Wattle Cup); Ananz (Blossom Lady); Pocket Mach (Melton Mares’ Championship) and Louvre (Gold Chalice).
