CHAIRMANS CORNER A n o t h e r breeding season is upon us and breeders have important decisions to make. How many mares do I bred? Which stallions do I go to? The NZSBA produced Register of Standardbred Stallions will be in your mail box toward the end of the month. Forty three pacing stallions and 24 trotting stallions are offered by their owners for your consideration. Once again I’d like to thank the studs for their support. This edition of Breeding Matters highlights the inaugural Golden Girls Series and the successes of Karen and Ken Breckon. I would like to thank HRNZ for their positive response to an NZSBA request for $132,000 to fund this series for the next two years. Owners and breeders wanted more opportunities for mares to race and these have been provided. The series will continue next year. There should be no excuses for fields of less than ten starters or heats being cancelled, especially when these races are targeted at the lower class of mare.

NZSBA is working to meet thge needs of breeders and owners. We need you to get your trainers organised to support these series. The next opportunities are the Dunstan Feeds Mares Series at Alexandra Park in late August through October; the Southern belle Series in Southland over the Summer and the Christian Cullen Canterbury Mares Speed Series in December to February. All these races are for great stakes and at venues where black type times can be achieved. On behalf of NZSBA I’d like to extend our congratulations to Karen and Ken Breckon, and the boys, not just for being awarded breeder and owners of the year but also for how they have represented themselves and harness racing. While they have had their fair share of success this year they definitely know how to win with grace and lose with dignity. We are privileged to have them and their large support team at Breckon Farm in our industry. As ambassadors for New Zealand and harness racing we wish them well where ever their travels may take them and I Can Doosit in 2012 and next year. When NZBSA does a survey of breeders one topic that always comes to the top are the costs of breeding other and above the stallion fee. One of the major ‘extra’ costs which people complain about is for the veterinarian’s fees and charges. Perhaps it

is time we placed a greater value on the services that the vets provide to harness racing and standardbred breeding. One thing I have noticed over the last decade is that here in Canterbury we seem to have fewer vets willing to take on the large animal practice, which is a concern. Our industry and sport is dependent on having young men and women willing to take on the big financial commitment to train as a vet, then find a spot in a practice and then be prepared to work with horses. In my personal experience the service we receive from our vets and their staff is generally excellent. We can make a call during the weekend or a night for a racehorse, mare or foal that is in trouble and our vets attend. If needed they then mobilise the resources of their clinics and the support staff for blood tests, scans, x-rays and in extreme cases operations. Sometimes around the clock care is needed and provided. Day and night they are available to support the standardbred racing and breeding industry. The latest survey of vets in NZ (2011) tells us that of the 2062 (full time equivalent vets) 153 of them list their prime work type as equine, i.e. just seven percent of the total. Of this number 62 (42 percent) of the vets are female, a percentage that is slowly increasing. With around 100

graduates a year working across all work types New Zealand retains between 60 percent to 65 percent of these young people in the profession.

representing horse governing bodies, service groups and vets has been working on a re-write of the Animal Welfare Act and a code for the welfare of horses.

On these average we can expect only four graduates from each year to be working with horses as their main career interest five to ten years after graduation. It does not take me to point out that these professionals are then spread across all equines of which standardbreds are less than 25 percent.

It has also been advocating strongly for the industry on principles for fair decision-making rights and the sharing of costs in the event of a major bio-security incident. As a result of the association’s efforts government has agreed to fund 50 percent of future costs well up from its original offer of just above 20 percent.

Having enough vets for the equine industry is not something we should not take for granted. Small animal care seems to this layperson a much more comfortable and safe career, especially when the customers coming to the vet!

EHA is also working from the industry’s perspective on guidelines for the transport of horses (particularly by air) and protocols/guidelines for outbreaks of strangles and equine herpes virus (EHV). Last year the outbreak of the latter at Nevele R Stud was very well handled and this could be used as a template for an industry code of conduct.

Perhaps NZSBA on behalf of owners and breeders should be doing something to support our younger vets with an interest in equines and particularly standardbred breeding. Ideas please? Our vets also represent us in a number of critical roles. Dennis Scott represents NZSBA and breeders on the NZ Equine Health Association. This little known and under appreciated industry body

While on the topic of EHV all breeders should be following their vet’s recommendations for vaccination of their mares for EHV. Once again this important work is supported largely by equine vets on a voluntary basis. We thank them and their employers for the time given to this important work.

Bruce Graham has been our longstanding member on the New Zealand Equine Research Foundation. NZERF funds research (about ten projects underway), scholarships (veterinary, stud work and farrier) and publications. Currently chaired by Dr Margaret Evans (a Canterbury Breeders member with her husband Bruce Taylor) the Foundation’s members include HRNZ, NZTR, NZRB, NZ Thoroughbred Breeders and NZSBA. A major activity is organising the annual series of Bayer Lectures held in the winter months. Up-coming publications include ones on nutrition, pasture management and another on foal management and diseases. NZSBA distributes these to all breeders and trainers in New Zealand. NZSBA pays $1.00 per foal bred to the Foundation. Once again I thank Bruce and Margaret for their work on NZERF. If you have equine health, bio-security or research topics you would like us to follow-up on please let Kiely know. Any ideas for supporting young veterinarians please speak up. John Mooney Chairman

FROM KIELY’S DESK Welcome to Issue 13 of Breeding Matters, the NZSBA publication which is now into its fourth season. If you are wondering what happened to Issue 12, one magazine per year is sent to our members only, if you enjoy the read – please consider joining the association. For our non member readers, you will find a flyer inserted with this magazine. We want all breeders to connect with the NZSBA. The more members we have, the greater the voice. We have built strong relationships over the years with HRNZ, Kindred Bodies, NZ Racing Board, Minister For Racing and Clubs – we have people in the right places to get your views heard. To our members: THANK YOU! Your support of the NZSBA allows us to show

we have the backing of breeding industry participants and more importantly to express your views. We always welcome and appreciate your feedback. If there is a specific membership benefit you would like us to look at, just call or email me. Thank you to our sponsors and advertisers, without whom this magazine would not exist. Please do take every opportunity to support our sponsors. They do have choices as to which organisations and businesses they spend their marketing budgets on and we are proud that the NZSBA can attract and retain sponsors of their calibre. The lease-a-broodmare scheme is now in full swing. If you have a broodmare which is going to be empty this year and you would like someone to breed from her,

please contact me and we can list her on our website. Our monthly page ‘hits’ are over 500. To promote the broodmare list, we email every breeder in NZ who has a valid email address – the last email campaign was read by 600 breeders. So we are reaching people. Along with Lease-A-Broodmare we also have the foal alert scheme that is available once again to all breeders. If you are in the unfortunate situation of needing of a foster mare for, call me on 021 274 4770 and I will send out a nationwide alert, please also contact me if you have a foster mare available. Good luck for the new season and happy reading!

The Breeders’

“Golden Girls” Series

The finals of the NZSBA/HRNZ Golden Girls Series have now been run for the season. HRNZ’s Handicapper Darrin Williams and NZSBA’s John Mooney who wrote to HRNZ seeking support for the new series are pleased with the uptake of this new series.

and older mares had access to $195,000 in extra stakes and 24 extra races this season. It was pleasing to see a track record being run at Nelson by Miss Moonlite who recorded a mile rate of 1.54.7, proving this venue is excellent for mile racing.

There is some disappointment with three heats not run due to insufficient nominations and the field sizes in the pacing finals. Darrin said:

NZSBA spoke to Southland member Stephen Baucke who bred, owns and trains Citylight:

this is something to discuss with owners and trainers as the horse population was there to support the races.

“The Golden Girls is a very good series and I look forward to it continuing next season, it was a great opportunity to get black type for the older mares. Citylight produced a 1.57.2 mile rate when winning the Otago/Southland final at Forbury Park.”

“A seven mare final field of maiden and one win horses for a good stake of $10,000 is a little hard to explain?” Stephen also will receive a $250 breeders’ bonus as the first NZSBA-member home Over the last few years NZSBA and in the final. Other winners of the breeders’ HRNZ have circulated surveys to better bonus are: Raymond and Denise Knight, understand what owners, breeders, and Invercargill breeders of Aquinaah who ran trainers want from the industry. John second in the 2-4 win Otago/Southland Mooney said:

Final; Rob Carr & Don Kirkbride North Island breeders of Miss Moonlite, winner of the 2-4 win Greater Canterbury Final; Hot Shoe Shuffle Breeding Syndicate (Sandy Yarndley) breeders of Hotinthecitytonite 0-1 win Cambridge-Te Awamutu Final; Maria Perriton breeder of Zara P who ran third in the 0-1 win Greater Canterbury Final and Robert and Maxine Garters breeders of Our Big Mac who ran second in the 0-1 Trot. The member bonuses are another great reason to be a member of the NZSBA! The most prolific winners in the series were Citylight and Miss Moonlight. Between them they won an extra $31,680 for their owners, plus gained the ever important black type for their mile rates. The tables below and on page 8 list all of the finalists, money earned during the series and best mile rate.

“ NZSBA in seeking support for this series from HRNZ was responding to requests from breeders for increased racing opportunities for fillies and mares.

“Next season I want to see every heat go ahead and for the fields across the series to average 11 starters. These are good stakes for these lower class horses.”

It was pleasing to see the trotters series in Canterbury well supported with an excellent win in the Final from the Nathan Williamson trained Sunrise Delight owned by Neville Cleaver with Kevin Strong.” John added. Through this initiative by NZSBA, 4YO

“The industry, in that respect, has certainly made great progress.’’

Christchurch businessman Trevor Casey is a positive harness racing enthusiast who has recently bought a 10-acre property in Springs Road, Prebbleton, to accommodate his nine broodmares. “I am going into breeding some yearlings for the sales,’’ he enthused. “I think the future is positive for harness racing as it is in good heart and I applaud go ahead administrators and promoters who are prepared to try things in attempts to overcome the on-going recession. There are many good innovations, especially for trotters.’’

He bought 50 percent of Inter Island Horse Transport from Neil Pilcher in 1994 and sold out to him seven years ago. “I have also visited Southland many times over the years in the float business and I have many good friends and associates down there in another great harness racing centre.’’ He said the business future for his Lone Star restaurant and entertainment looked good as it was progressing pleasingly in a strategically suitable location. Casey rated outstanding trotter

Pocaro and fine trotting mare Africa as two of his best horses while King Sands (possibly his favourite), talented young trotter Escapee, Stent and Caps Off, winner of the NZ Oaks, were others he had gained much success with. He was holding out hopes for Son of Anarchy, a three year old brother to Pocaro with Colin De Filippi which was showing promise. His two year old Majestic Son gelding was in work with Mark Purdon and had shown enough initially to suggest she could race as a juvenile in the new season. He was also expecting good things from a juvenile trotting filly by Majestic Son from Dutch Annie, a daughter of Miss Whiplash.

Casey owns most of his horses outright but only 50 percent of Belle Galleon and Rae Galleon. Potentially Pocaro might have been his best horse but she was retired with recurring soreness. Escapee was spelling with De Filippi and Stent had done a good job to date, he said. “I am looking forward to racing a $30,000 yearling filly I bought at the Sales. She is a half sister to Earl of Mot which has done a good job in Australia after doing well in New Zealand.’’ The well bred youngster has been entrusted to former Invercargill man Gavin Smith. water since the earthquakes and on-going recession, he said. “I don’t think the earthquakes have impacted too badly on the industry, especially if people tried to be positive and progressive.’’ Casey has been there and done that in harness racing but still harboured a desire to have a horse good enough to start in the New Zealand Cup. “I have a share in Mah Sish which was developed by Dean Taylor and is now with Anthony Butt. He was fourth in the last Auckland Cup. That was encouraging and he is back in solid work with Anthony. He is by a top sire in Mach Three and has won nine races, three for us.’’

OPINION PIECE

The sire sons of Life Sign By Bee Pears Why are some sires successful and some are not?

The question becomes even more interesting when there are strong common genetic threads but very different outcomes – i.e. when good racehorses with similar breeding (the same dam or the same sire or even both) stand at stud, for very different outcomes. It’s about as close to the concept of a ‘control group’ that we have in our effort to research siring success factors. In past articles, Ray Chaplin from Australia’s equineexcellence.biz and I have looked at the siring sons of the great mare Rich N Elegant and also examined the career of Life Sign at stud in America and in Australasia in three very different genetic pools. In this article we take two different approaches to assessing the sons of Life Sign at stud (Island Fantasy, I Am A Fool, Day In A Life and Peruvian Hanover) – and why they have failed to be commercially successful sires, and yet Real Desire stands out as a “real de Sire” with a hope of carrying on the Life Sign lineage in both hemispheres. Please note: I am aware Peruvian Hanover is being given another chance to fill a niche in the market and I understand there are favourable reports from breeders who are interested in breeding mares to him. The first part of this article is an edited version of a report from

16 Breeding Matters August

equineexcellence.biz. The FREE full report with more detailed statistical analysis is available by emailing contact@equineexcellence.biz What made Real Desire different from the others? Ray’s analysis concludes that, when compared to Life Sign’s other main siring sons, Real Desire always had the edge – not just as a racehorse, but also in his genetic foundation to be a champion sire.

PART 1 - THE POWER OF GENETIC EXCELLENCE

By Ray Chaplin

Like all breeding conundrums there is no singular specific reason because of the variety of genetic (genotype and phenotype) factors that contribute in different breeding environments to the siring success of any stallion. So to provide breeders with some insights www.equineexcellence. biz aggregated key performance measures of these Life Sign sire sons and compared them to other leading stallions in order to establish a criteria which could be valuable to breeders in selecting the right stallions for their mares. Racing performance The performance records summarised here indicate the need for all breeders to look behind the headline “total earnings” which feature prominently

in most stallion advertising and to also consider the stallion’s ability to beat all comers on the USA grand circuit. LIFE SIGN (1990) Abercrombie – Three Diamonds (Albatross) $US 1,912,454; Average earnings per start of $US 54,642. Stood in US & CAN. 14 crops/ 490 foals. REAL DESIRE (1998) Life Sign – Deadly Desire (Troublemaker) $US 3,159,814; Average earnings per start of $US 78,995 Stood in US. 9 crops/713 foals. I AM A FOOL (2001) ) Life Sign – I’m No Fool (Tyler B) US 1,168,312; Average earnings per start of $US 64,906 (Note of 18 starts only 3 were at 3yo for $US 9,250) Stood in US & CAN. 7 crops/458 foals ISLAND FANTASY (1996) Life Sign – Three Mile Island (No Nukes) $US 1,371,525; Average earnings per start of $US 37,068 Stood US & CAN. 12 crops/496 foals. PERUVIAN HANOVER (1998) Life Sign – Plum Peachy (Ideal Society) $US 1,852,434; Average earnings per start of $US 21,118. Stood CAN. 4 crops/169 foals. DAY IN A LIFE (1995) Life Sign – Riva Hanover (Tyler B) $US 1,863,602; Average earnings per start of $US 17,581. Stood US. 1 crop/5 foals. Both these performance measures help differentiate potentially champion sires from the rest as they indicate superior genetic strengths which have been expressed at conception and materialized on the race track.

The flow on factors affecting their siring career then include critical issues for stallion success such as the stud farms at which they stood, competing first season stallions, the health of the industry in the states in which they stood, eligibility of their foals for the state based lucrative stakes programmes and most importantly the excellence affinity of the gene pool and the number of these mares available to them. At this initial level it is easy to see why both Life Sign and his son Real Desire had all the right credentials to be successful sires. I Am A Fool with his career basically restricted to 2yo racing and hence not proven at 3yo and older would have been questionable to breeders in respect of his ability to be a successful sire, whilst Day In A Life, Peruvian Hanover and Island Fantasy although millionaires did not have the overall elite level of racing

credentials that would provide high levels of confidence that they would become champion sires. Hence they would have been restricted in their ability to attract reasonable numbers of genetically matched EEA™ “Champion Prospect Broodmares©”, the key to the success of all Champion sires.

Maternal genetic strength But there is more to it than this racing performance assessment and it again relates to the genetic excellence strengths and their sources inherited by each of the sires from their maternal line. After comparing the dam and grandam racing and production records for each of these sires (see the full report) it is clear that Real Desire stands out in the strength of his maternal line: Dam - Deadly Desire (un-raced) produced 7 winners from 7 foals five of which were bred from lesser sires (Rustler Hanover

Deadly Desire’s dam Mystical Mood is from Whispering Sands a recognised foundation mare from the famed Golden Miss tribe whose two daughters Shifting Scene and Whispering Sands figure prominently in the pedigrees of such proven sires as Grinfromeartoear and Safely Kept.

Champion benchmarking Finally, in order to gain some indications of whether these five Life Sign stallions ever had the potential to measure up as champion sires equineexcellence. biz benchmarked their racetrack and maternal line strengths against the five most successful USA sires in the sports history: Abercrombie, Albatross, Artsplace, Camluck, Western Hanover.

Sons of Life Sign continued... Table 1: The Life Sign stallions and their Australasian stud records (as at May 2012) The resulting table is colour coded into Gold, Silver and Bronze on an EEA Champion Sire Genetic Excellence Indicators Grid which also includes Life Sign and his five sire sons. The more gold appears in the grid the more the likelihood of the sire being or becoming a Champion sire whilst the more white that appears the more likely that the sire will not become a Champion sire. The 4 categories the horses are rated on are: - Racetrack ($ per start/Major race wins - Dam Racetrack $US 500K+ won (in today’s dollars) - Dam’s maternal line (2nd gen.) $500K+ performers (in today’s dollars) - USA/Canada stud record At September 2011 all the Champion sires have 3 gold, as does Life Sign. Real Desire has 1 gold plus 2 silver. Island Fantasy rates 1 silver, 2 bronze, I Am A Fool has 1 bronze and 3 copper, and Day In A Life and Peruvian Hanover were all white. This results in the same general ranking for these sires as was evident in the USA/ Canada statistics.

Conclusion This research methodology may serve breeders as one useful measurement criteria in attempting to predict the approximate degree to which any new sire will succeed in the breeding barn be they sons of Life Sign or not. Part 2 - LIFE IN NEW ZEALAND

SIGN’S

SIRE

SONS

By Bee Pears

Real Desire is a typical Life Sign sire son, in that he is more likely to leave foals that will take time to mature. Where he differs from the other Life Sign sire sons, is that he can provide a dollop of genuine early ability and speed. Some Real Desires are medium sized and with a body type that will help make a more natural 2yo, but many of them are quite lanky and leggy (not an untypical Life Sign attribute). However what they may lack in early strength and maturity, they seem to make up for by being good gaited and with a long reaching stride.

It is interesting to note that of Real Desire’s 54 winners to date (as at mid July 2012) a third of them are from In The Pocket or Holmes Hanover mares, with all that close up Tar Heel blood. Tar Heel is regarded as often providing a “kick” to horses. In The Pocket may well be adding his ‘early type’ conformation and Holmes Hanover his strength, and of course the Christian Cullen mares going to Real Desire might add both. Real Desire will find a genetic pool here that suits him and underscores his own ability to leave competitive attitude and speed. In America he also tends to click with mares with plenty of Meadow Skipper in their breeding (as he has himself ) and many New Zealand mares can also offer that.

Real Desire at stud

The trainers I spoke to noted their attitude - unlike the impression gained from the progeny of other sons of Life Sign (which Mark Smolenski describes as “laid back types, loafers who wanted to go to sleep rather than compete”), many of the Real Desires seem to have an ability to run and a desire to run fast. It can be exciting stuff watching them balance up after the home bend and then unleash their speed down the outside of the field. It looks a bit raw but hints of something special.

Weak genes or weak types?

statistics for Island Fantasy, Day In A Life and I Am A Fool are not as bad as the ratings make them appear.

Part 2 - Life Sign’s sons in NZ cont...

very solid even if they are not “gold” or “silver”. Island Fantasy’s dam Three Mile Island has a great track record and left a number of quality foals, and her maternal line through Meadow Cheer is a strong one (which produced very good horse Tyler B, which went on to be an okay sire and a successful damsire). Peruvian Hanover’s dam Plum Peachy left 4 good earning winners from 4 different sires; her dam managed 9 winners from 13 foals from a very limited range of soso sires. I Am A Fool’s dam managed to produce 5 winners of $200k plus, and her dam produced 100% foals to winners from 10 offspring, with 2 of them grinding out 26 wins and 44 wins respectively. So in my view genetic weakness in the maternal line of those sires is not a factor in their failure to succeed at stud. Rather, I think the type of mares they attracted and the type of horse they left have limited their commercial appeal and their ability to deliver consistently well performing foals.

Overall Life Sign does not seem to have stamped his own grittiness and courage, or the toughness of the Abercrombie line on his siring line to date. It remains to be seen whether Peruvian Hanover can change that perception by passing on his own durability and toughness, and whether Real Desire’s progeny will show courage as well as raw speed as they get older and we see more of them on the racetrack in higher grade races.

Damsire potential Are Island Fantasy, Day In A Life or I Am A Fool going to have any more luck as damsires? The tiny numbers (very few breeders bothered to hold onto these mares, and it is early days for Peruvian Hanover) make it hard to draw any conclusions. However there are some interesting signs, particularly for Island Fantasy. In my view, the sons of Life Sign mares will be looking for the same qualities in sires that the Life Sign sire sons

themselves really needed from mares – more “kick”, speed genes and “early type” conformation that can create a foal that is stronger earlier. As I said before, I believe the genetic foundation of these stallions as damsires is good enough to provide a decent platform, if matched with the right sires. And luckily we have plenty of sires on offer that fit the bill. Island Fantasy ‘s big crop (122 mares for 87 live foals) was in 2003, but his numbers dramatically dropped over the next two years, which is always a difficult period for a sire, and his overseas progeny results didn’t help his claims. However his damsire prospects are intriguing. He has a respectable 43 credits as a damsire here, including several mares who have had more than one foal. The oldest foal is a 5yo but most are 3yos and younger. Of the 20 foals of racing age, 9 have qualified and/or raced. Breeders of Island Fantasy mares include the Parkers of Auckland Reactor fame

A common attribute in their progeny seems to be the lack of early strength and lack of competitive attitude. What Island Fantasy, I Am A Fool, and Day In A Life needed were mares that injected speed genes, attitude and “early type” conformation. Being promoted as fast types themselves, they were always more likely to attract mares that were looking for speed and competitive attitude rather than those who could add it. The results were foals that were often physically lanky and weak as youngsters, and didn’t get to the races quick enough to catch the eye of breeders or be competitive early. These sires developed a reputation for leaving ‘soft’ types.

younger (at 2011/12). Many Day In A Life mares are going to sires that fit the ‘speed and early type’ conformation description – American Ideal, Jereme’s Jet, Gotta Go Cullect, and Courage Under Fire. Three have gone to Live Or Die Peruvian Hanover stood from 2006 to 2010 and is being reintroduced this season. Unlike the other Life Sign sire sons, he was wisely marketed as durable and tough and ideal for Christian Cullen mares (although most breeders with Christian Cullen mares or indeed any speedy quality-bred mare would have wanted to go to a more commercial sire).

Stunning Courage pictured above Other sires patronised by Island Fantasy mares include Jereme’s Jet, Western Terror, Grinfromeartoear, Gotta Go Cullect, Live Or Die, Courage Under Fire and even top fee sires like Bettor’s Delight and Art Major, so there is a level of confidence being shown by breeders. I Am A Fool stood here for only one season (2005) and got 45 live foals from 92 mares, and those foals have only produced 12 wins in total since then. In New Zealand he has 6 credits as a damsire, only one is a 2yo, the others younger. Day In A Life stood here for 4 years (20032006) and had good numbers of mares for the first two of them, but his poor fertility basically slashed his chances in half. In New Zealand he is the damsire of 16 foals – a 4yo, a 3yo and the rest 2yos or

” It is a fact of life that cheaper, less glamorous sires will usually get mares that are less well performed or bred, so even if they have potential to do much better with better mares they often don’t get a chance.

Only two Peruvian Hanover mares have been bred to date, one to Christian Cullen and one to Gotta Go Cullen. Life Sign himself has 22 winners as a damsire in New Zealand from around 120 foals, including impressive ones like Opulent and Double Happy. 21 of his damsire credits were yearlings and 19 were 2yos in 2011/12, indicating there is still a decent level of confidence from breeders with Life Sign mares. Christian Cullen, Badlands Hanover and Bettor’s Delight

are popular choices as sires for these mares. For more discussion about standardbred breeding and to view Real Desire’s career in New Zealand plase visit Bee’s blogsite b4breeding.com

An update on placentitis in mares Lee Morris BVSc DVSc DipACT, Registered Specialist Veterinary Reproduction. www.equibreed.co.nz Despite improvements in conception rates in horses over the years, the live foal rate in both the thoroughbred and standardbred industries is only around 65%. Furthermore, mares that have lost their pregnancies often have difficulty conceiving in the subsequent breeding season. In the last few years, there has been an increased awareness in the USA and Australia of the incidence of pregnancy loss due to placentitis (inflammation of the placenta) in mares. Much of this awareness stems from the history of mare reproductive loss syndrome, associated with the ingestion of caterpillars, which both countries have experienced. However, there are multiple factors which result in the condition of placentitis that are also relevant to New Zealand, some of which include an infectious component, and all of which ultimately result in one or more of the following: - compromised placental function, abortion, premature birth or the birth of a weak foal. The first sign of placentitis may also present as colic, followed by premature udder development, vaginal discharge and abortion. Pregnancy loss late in gestation is an important source of reproductive wastage in the equine industry and compromised foals may never achieve

26 Breeding Matters

their athletic potential. Placentitis is most commonly caused by bacteria from the vagina traversing the cervix and invading the uterus and placenta. The associated inflammation of the placenta leads to prostaglandin synthesis which stimulates uterine contractions and ultimately results in premature delivery of the foal. Mares are considered at risk if they have predisposing anatomical conditions (eg: poor vulval conformation, damaged cervix), have a history of abortion, are exposed to infectious agents or have poor placental function. Examination of the placenta after foaling may provide evidence of the risk factors predisposing to placentitis. (Fig. 1 Scarred placenta near cervical star). Nearly a quarter of all pregnancy loss experienced in mares occurs after 120 days of gestation. During these latter stages of gestation, the placenta is the sole source of progesterone like hormones which maintain the pregnancy state and prevent expulsion of the foetus.

Poor placental function will compromise the production of these steroids, and in a clinical setting Regumate速 is frequently administered when placental compromise is suspected. Indeed, in Kentucky (USA) and Scone (Australia) many mares at high risk of losing their pregnancy are treated with double the dose of Regumate速 throughout gestation. Concurrent antibiotic treatment is often routinely administered prophylactically in mares at high risk of pregnancy loss and also in active cases of placentitis. Prophylactically, the use of antibiotics will minimise contamination and prevent the ascent of bacteria into the reproductive tract. In these cases, effective antibiotics are chosen for their efficacy against the bacteria and also for their ease of administration, and are often given monthly throughout gestation. In cases of acute placentitis, once infection has crossed the placenta, then antibiotic treatment may be intensified to daily treatments throughout the risk period.

Arma Xpress is WA’s top two-year-old By Peter Wharton Arma Xpress, a grand looking Artiscape filly, is rated Western Australia’s top youngster to date this season, particularly after her success in the $125,000 Group 1 Golden Slipper, one of the season’s major two-year-old classics.

Xcellent 2:03.3 (by Live Or Die) – emerging successful.

She has won seven of her eight starts and $255,470 -- a torrid passage putting her out of contention at her other appearance at Gloucester Park.

Arma Antoinette has since left a black weanling colt by Live Or Die and, after not being bred from in 2011, has been booked to Rocknroll Hanover this year, along with her daughter, Arma Xceptional.

In the Golden Slipper, Arma Xpress, one of only two fillies in the elite 10-horse field, led from the outset and held on gamely to prevail in a three-way photo. Earlier in the season, she won the $100,000 Group 1 WA Sales Classic, $50,000 Group 2 Champagne Classic, $50,000 Group 2 Westbred Classic, $35,000 Group 3 Gold Bracelet and the Western Crown Classic. Bred by Jim Currie, of Orange Grove near Perth, who also races her, Arma Xpress was got by Artiscape from Arma Antoinette, a Canterbury bred mare by the Albatross horse Holmes Hanover. Arma Antoinette, who took a record of 2:01.4 as a three-year-old and earned a cheque in eight of her 13 starts, was bought in 2007 by Currie, in foal to Live Or Die, from Nevele R Stud principal Peter O’Rourke. The resultant foal, Arma Xceptional, was a brilliant filly which won three of her 10 starts including a heat of the Breeders Crown.

Arma Xpress is her sixth live foal. “I bred three foals that year and she was a standout right from day one,” Currie said.

Arma Class, the dam of Arma Antoinette, won three races and took a record of 2:00.6 and at the stud left six winners headed up by Coopers Creek, a 1:52 winner in America, Abba Bromac TT1:57.1 and Arma Dominator, the race-winning dam of one of Australia’s most exciting, young pacers in Excel Stride (1:51.5 and $439,514). By Talk About Class, Arma Class was out of a noted producer in the Armbro Del mare Ar Miss, a NZ Oaks winner which became

the dam of eight winners. The best of her produce was undoubtedly Armalight 1:55.4, the winner of 18 races and $279,560 including the NZ Cup, Auckland Cup, NZ Free-for-all, NZ Oaks and two heats of the 1983 Inter Dominion. This family has consistently produced a number of good winners over the years. Other top performers tracing directly to Ar Miss have been Sand Pebbles 1:55.8 (NSW Ladyship Mile), the Australian Pacing Gold champions Majestic Mach 1:55.8 and Masked Crusader 1:58.1, London Express 1:50.6, Masterson 1:50.4, Magic In Motion 1:55.9 (Aust. 2YOI mile record), and so on. “I have just two bought weanlings from this family, one a Badlands Hanover filly out of Arma Class and the other a Live Or Die colt out of Trigg Beach, a half-sister to Arma Xpress,” Currie said. “The thing I like most about this family is that they are all correct and are clean goers.”

Rusty transformed into a show horse!

One of the problems of rehoming is that standardbreds need to go through a period of retraining – they have been trained to pull a sulky, and have usually not been broken to saddle or trained as a riding horse. “It can take anywhere between a couple of days and several months to prepare a standardbred off the track for life as a recreational horse,” says Melissa. “The average is probably about a month - I like to have walk, trot and canter established and take them out and about to the forest and the beach. They have to be safe for anyone to get on.” One of the difficulties reschooling standardbreds can be with canter – “true” canter has three beats, whereas standardbreds typically have a four-beat canter frowned upon in the horse world. Melissa explains that improving the canter is largely a matter of balance and of course the skill level of the rider. “If the horse can canter naturally in the paddock then it can canter under saddle. There are some standardbreds with a very good canter, but many will always have that four-beat canter. But that doesn’t matter to the majority of recreational riders.” Melissa finds that while it can be hard to find a home for a standardbred straight off the track, there’s a good market once they are up and going. “it’s not lucrative, but it’s a shame if a nice horse doesn’t get a chance.”

FULL SPEED AHEAD FOR SWEDISH HARNESS BREEDING According to new calculations by the professor of genetics Mr Thorvaldur Arnason, Swedish harness breeding is expected to remain strong. This is in spite of the reformed and now unregulated stallion selections system as well as declining birth rates. On behalf of The Swedish Trotting Association, Mr Thorvaldur Arnason has studied - from a genetic perspective which influences a reduced number of mated mares together with the reformed stallion selections system might have on the quality of our future trotters and harness racing. Mr Arnason’s calculations are based on BLUP-index (Best Linear Unibiased Prediction-index), which simplified is a mathematical number that indicates an expected or documented genetic value. This provides us with a scientifically based prognosis in fundamental, future issues. Fortunately, in Mr Arnason’s genetical breeding calculations there are no indications of a decreasing rate of progress even though the number of mated mares is reduced and the stallion selections are no more regulated by the Swedish trotting association. The breeders make their selection of breeding material with great accuracy, and the Swedish rate of progress is the biggest ever measured and documented for horses no matter what breed or where in the world. That’s really impressing! Mr Arnason has analyzed a number of factors concerning the harness breeding between the years 2001-2011, a period of extensive changes. The number of mares covered was reduced, and the stallion selections system went from being a procedure where stallions with unsatisfying performances were rejected to being an unregulated business.

38 Breeding Matters August

Text by: Christina Olsson Translation by: Helena S.Storck

During the whole period of time, the generation interval for both mares and stallions was between 11-12 years and there are no signs that this interval is getting shorter. This means that the average age for breeding horses in Sweden is the same in 2011 as it was in 2001. A shorter generation interval would mean an increased rate of progress as the breeding itself does not stand still. As several other successful trotting nations have shorter generation intervals, like the USA with their great share of races for colt trotters and short racing careers as well as France where stallions often are used for breeding along with their racing careers, a shorter Swedish generation interval would make a difference. Measured in BLUP-index, the breeders continue to set higher and higher standards for their broodmares. When the number of mated mares got lower, it was the top index mares that were used for further breeding purposes. The average index for the mated mares has increased from 90.6 to 102.3. The mares giving birth in 2011 had index numbers 7 points over the average for their age while the mares giving birth in 2001 had index numbers 5 points over the average for their age. This indicates that along with the decreasing mating numbers, the breeders tightened their demands on broodmare qualities. Together with the careful selection of stallions this should mean that we, in spite of the reduced birth rates, can expect many good race horses also in the future. Also regarding the stallions, BLUP-index numbers have increased from 102.8 to 113.4. The competition when selecting

stallions for breeding is very tough, and only 1.5-3 percent of the male population is used. No trend breaking since the reformed stallion selections system was introduced is yet to be seen. Therefore, in most cases, stallions used for breeding have high BLUP-index numbers thanks to good pedigree and performances. In 2012, the BLUP-index for the average stallion is 113.4 compared to 102.3 for the average mare. When the reformed stallion selections system was introduced, some people were concerned that mediocre stallions would be used for breeding and ultimately lower the standard for Swedish trotters. Their concerns are partially justified but many of those stallions who wouldn’t have been approved by the old system have, despite their weaker performances, a modern and high-class pedigree. However, they are often closely related and the increased inbreeding is reflected in BLUP-index numbers as well as in the analysis made by Mr Arnason. Measuring in BLUP-index numbers and generation intervals are theoretical calculations, and in the end there will be lots of other factors to affect the future. However, for now the theoretical calculations are all we have got, and they actually give us a good indication of what to expect. To see the final results, we will have to wait another couple of years to watch the first crop of foals enter the race tracks. We are looking forward to see what the future holds!
