A glimpse inside a house of Jack

the house of Jack Professor: Type: Program: Date: Location:

Dieter Dietz, Luca Pattaroni Master thesis project Cultural venue Feb - Sep 2020 Multiple

Jack was born in the 1980s in Chicago, he’s a fictional character embodying the spirit of the house movement and is frequently mentioned in house music tracks. He is described as the universal feeling of being connected to others through something greater. He brings communities together, integrates minorities and unites individuals around music. Jack is the major inspiration for this project. The houses of Jack are connected gathering spaces that broadcast live musical performances. They are located in the lively districts of the cities and play the role of local cultural venues offering an international scene. They promote the valuation of the independent artist by allowing him to broadcast his performance anywhere on Earth from the location of his choice while giving him a view on his audience. Moreover, in a drive to reduce the alarming carbon footprint of the music and construction industries, the houses of Jack aspire on the one hand to reduce mass travelling for the audience and artists and on the other hand to minimize the impact of building materials by reusing, for each house, 2 shipping containers of the 11 million abandoned ones. Finally, the project is designed as a kit that can be assembled and disassembled, it has height-adjustable feet and a surface of solar panels adapted to the context. It does not connect to any physical network.

Fez, Morocco

the forest of Fez Professor: Type: Program: Date: Location: Publication:

In Morocco, more than 600 hectares of suburban forests disappear irreversibly every year under urban pressure. According to international standards, the city of Fez is a noticeable example of greenery scarcity: only the small suburban forest of Ain Chkef prevails as « the green lung of the city » and is highly valued by locals. Fez is consistently attracting people. Being flanked by a strong topography north and east, the city is quickly sprawling towards the south and the west. This periphery is becoming unidirectional towards the city centre where most of the companies and equipment are located, consequently leading them to become unprivileged bedroom communities with a considerable lack of equipment.

Harry Gugger School Project, 4th year Forest, orchard, «work-away» Feb - May 2019 Fez, Morocco Fez Lessons, LABA

The Forest of Fez will have a threefold positive impact on the city. In terms of ecology it will operate as a stronghold against the ongoing massive desertification. Moreover, the project will enhance the ratio of green space per inhabitant, thus improving air and water quality. Additionally, the project will serve as an educational instrument to reconnect people with nature. Indeed, it will raise awareness about preserving our environment and spread knowledge on forests, orchards and permaculture. Finally, the forest will stand as an economical asset to an unprivileged periphery; firstly by acting as an equipment to break the unidirectional character, and secondly by behaving as a «protective sponge» for the city, it is floodable to avoid the material damage usually suffered by the neighbourhoods downstream.

The forest of Fez presents itself as an extension of Ain Chkef forest towards the city centre, upgrading the former to an urban equipment. Inspired by the natural phenomenon of trees growing along river banks, canals will be derived from the main spring to guide the forest. In between those canals, 20 self-sustained houses will be built along with a network of roads connecting them to the city. The « Association de la Forêt de Fès » - to be created at the start of the project - will be in charge of hiring 20 rangers. They will inhabit the houses and plant the forest on the river banks, thereby generating a clearing around the houses. They will also be given a training allowing them to host guests and teach them about the forest, orchards and permaculture. In exchange, the guests will help planting and harvesting the fruit trees of the clearing, turning the empty space into a productive orchard of which the rangers will be able to sell the fruits. 13

The house: a modular living area, a shop and a permaculture field for self-sufficiency

The roof: - Gravel (40 mm) - Drainage system (40 mm) - Waterproof layer - Screed (50 mm, 2% slope) - Concrete slab (200 mm)

The house is on concrete pilotis to avoid getting damaged from the recurring floods. The walls are filled with bricks, which allows their destruction to welcome the extensions.

The wall: - «Khelta» - Brick (180 mm) - «Khelta»

Iinterior and exterior coatings are made of «khelta». Invented in Fez by the craftsmen of the medina, this coating is often used in the constructions of the region. It is made of clay, lime and extracts of egg, then finished with soap to give it an extra protective layer and a smooth surface. It is stong, waterproof and authentic to Fez.

1:100 model for the «St-Légier» housing project made from cardboard and 3D printed buildings

40

RDR architectes Team: Type: Program: Date: Location:

Six months of internship at Richter Dahl Rocha & Associés Architectes have let me experience every stage of an architecture project. The work performed was mainly on three housing projects at different scales. «St. Légier», five housing buildings for which I have developped architectural documents (floor plans, neighbourhood plan, car park plan), a 1:100 model (cardboard and 3D printing) and organized the exterior spaces following the client’s inputs and the swiss norms of construction. Alongside my team manager, I then presented to the client and jury plans of multiple scales, elevations, sections and models that they validated. «Uttwil», two three-story buildings with two and three apartments per floor for which I was put in charge of the propriety per floor documents, construction details, synoptics and materiality documents. «Les Cèdres», eleven big scale buildings for which I organised the tender file, made a study for the balcony separations with various options, another study for the facade materials and a modification of one of the parking lots.

Bonatti bivouac Professor: Type: Program: Date: Location: Publication:

Martin and Anja Fröhlich School project, 3rd year Bivouac Feb - May 2017 A Neuve, Swiss Alps EAST Lab

The Bonatti bivouac is a shelter for the mountaineers that visit the A Neuve Hut. It protects from the wind, the rain and the sun and is designed to let one or two people sleep in it. The main goal of the project is to give a new life to the A Neuve hut which is losing more and more visitors. This first bivouac has been built by the students of the atelier. The idea is to have a forest of bivouacs surrounding the existing hut to make it attractive again. Two versions were made. One from recovery equipement and this one, from solid wood, inspired by the swiss vernacular constructions and only using joints, no screws or nails.

Dormitory The project offers a solution to the problem of privacy in the existing dormitory at A Neuve, Swiss Alps. The rearrangement of the beds in a line creates individual and private moments in a shared space. Seasons During summer, the Line serves as the dormitory of the hut. Storage and technical spaces are placed on the ground floor of the project. During winter, the Line gives way to the heritage of the A Neuve hut, where the hikers will sleep and spend their time. Functions The ground floor of this structure hosts several functions like wood storage, which is easily accessible from the outside, or benches, tables and tools and another part related to technical spaces. Wind A study was done on the situation of the wind so several tests took place to figure out the most optimized shape and volume for the project. A Neuve Hut The relationship between the hut and the Line is one that brings the best out of both, they complement each other. One would not work without the other.

4=1 Professor: Team: Type: Program: Date: Location: Publication:

Dominique Perrault Philippe d’Alançon, Loïc Cao, François Loison School project, 2nd year Garden, housing, public square, cinema Feb - May 2017 Seoul, South Korea SUB Lab

4=1 is a multi-program project that aims to offer the Bukchon district in Seoul a manifold usage for a building designed for the considerable amount of students living around the university. By superposing the programs, this project offers an answer to the urban densification with a decomposition of the ground. Four levels are created: - A suspended garden that creates a lanscape in the neighborhood. - Housing for the students responding the urban and scholar lifestyle. - A public space concentrating the district’s urban flows. - A cinema to make the site more attractive and bring an entertainment to the students.
