The project stipulated a temporary floating theatre in Sydney’s Harbour inspired by Aldo Rossi’s Teatro del Mundo. The theatre should be built to withstand or harness environmental phenomena creating a transformative experience for performers and audiences.

At Geppetto’s the dramatic arts are beyond, yet intrinsically connected to, the everyday. The arts are a place of fiction, a fairytale. Geppetto’s counters this, emboding the ideas of Brechtian theatre and the alienation effect. Audiences must piece together each moment of the scheme. Individual functions float alongside the unifying finger wharf. A pacifistic approach is not possible. The program is separated from, and in tandem with, itself, and the everyday. Each indivual part is separable. It is a still life over water. It is a frame of functions. A frame for theatre. A frame for art.

The design studio called for an ‘urban oasis’ - bringing the restorative qualities of water to a dense urban area with a mix of swimming, floating, eating, drinking and relaxation to Pirrama Park in Pyrmont. The proposal centres around the experience of a wave on the body. As the wave crashes over you, there is chaos. The wave drags you into its control. It consumed you, as you consume it. There is no escape. Under the water, there is calm. You are being tumbled around. You have no control. But it is freeing.

As you move through the scheme and its different programs, you experience the wave, the chaos and the calm, the levels of control. Each of the pools is a different offering. Float is a sensory deprivation, calm without control. Jump, a juvenille controlling of the chaos, inspired by Sydney’s jump rocks. Each is its own unique experience.

Nungalinya College is an adult education college based in Darwin set across 10 acres of land. The space has a quiet atmosphere, with plenty of trees, walking trails and local wildlife. The brief was to increase the number of student and teacher accomodation buildings, as well as an outdoor teaching space, and a new dining room.

The studio was a practice in climate driven design in response to the tropical Northern Territory. The architecture needed to respond to heat, storms, and sun - both the dry and the wet seasons.

Additionally, in designing for the people of the Territory, it was necessary to gain an understanding of country. A connection to land, culture, art, and knowledge was to be felt in every aspect of the scheme. For me that meant a focus on indigenous architectures and landscape design.

The CLAW is a small scale residential alterations and additions project in Ashfield. Following the applicatory LEP and DCP, and the needs of the client, both an SEE and a DA was produced in collaboration with Clancy Barrett.

The house is a series of distinctive conditions - materially, environmentally, and occupationally. From the original federation bunaglow the house transitions into a grander entertaining and family area. Here focus moves from the corridor to the garden. The reframing continues along the semienclosed deck towards the rumpus room above the garage. Here the walls hinge out, opening towards the courtyard whilst still affording privacy by way of its elevation. The awning windows are mimicked linearly across the home responding in scale to the unique privacy concerns of each space, whilst simultaneously unifying the home’s identity.
